At tennis in Florida, there is kind of an unwritten rule....Let's not talk about health issues. A few guys pop a few Advils before playing though. We don't stick to the rule completely because if someone has a serious issue we do want to know about it.

But, if you have ever been to a dinner, with 6, 8 or 10 seniors around a table, and all they talk about is their medications....it is time for me to quietly leave.

I don't want to be anywhere near here if you ever come down with something like a hang nail !

There is now a gourmet donut shop locally that sells these elaborate things like ones with a Snickers bar baked inside them, with all sorts of artistic decoration. They had a limited-run of ones recently that resembled a large Tide pod that were an instant sellout. I believe they average about $3 apiece. Reminds me of the cupcake craze of a few years ago.

I have some drugs that are covered through the gap - insulin and high blood pressure drugs. Unfortunately, the Eliquis I take for anticoagulants is not - that’s $185 a month to me for 60 tablets.

I can’t remember the last time I had ice cream, cake, cookies, donuts, candy, etc. I try to stay away from bread and pasta. I have a plain bagel a couple of times a week or a couple of slices of bread - no carbs at dinner. I do my best - but losing weight is so difficult even on a low carb diet.

I actually used that strategy early on in my work career, one of the few smart things I did in those years. I sought out and was lucky to get a govt job in my mid-late 20s which let me retire 32 years later. My health benefits (essentially just prescriptions and some ancilliary things like physio, etc since the health care system here takes care of the big stuff) costs me a ridiculously tiny amount, less than $20 a month. The prescription coverage goes away when I turn 65 and gets somewhat more expensive when I go to the govt-run seniors pharmacare plan but hopefully not a whole lot.

I have to wonder if a lot of that stuff will survive here past the costs of the boomers getting really old - another 25 years or so, when expenses really mount. It's to the point where there will be two classes of retirees - plebes eating cat food, and special deluxe/public sector, with a lot of funding necessary. There's going to be some public outcry at some point.

A good friend of mine's family figured it out. His parents are both (now retired) public sector with pensions far in excess of anything they'd have been able to invest privately. He's public sector, then I realize so is his brother, and I know a couple of his cousins and their parents - all public sector. I sometimes wish my parents had steered me into that. As I've hit 40 now, probably too late for me to get in on the system, unless I become a cop or something.

That's much below the GoodRx pricing in Floriday. Does Eliquis offer price reductions from the company? I think they mention it in ads up here. I'll have to watch for one again.

You're probably not far off on the retirement age thing. I won't complain about helping (most) older or younger folks via social programs and other goods - those help to make a legitimate society. I just hope to make it long enough to get a little ROI

The pension plan I have is funded at just over 100% according to the current actuarial report and both the employees and employer contribute equally. Just before I retired I was paying in around $1K.mo which the gov was matching. The eligible amount of salary gets cut off somewhere around $120K/yr too so as gov starts paying for more high-priced jobs as has been the trend here they do not suffer so much later on the pension front. That is actually a bigger concern IMO. Here, the province used to be very frugal with salaries. Over the last 10 years or so they started paying executive types a lot more supposedly to attract them but the result was that everyone under them all got jacked up salaries as well. I don't mind paying a good CEO what he's worth but paying $200K a year for a mediocre finance or HR type irks me.

Not a terrible idea, you becoming a cop! At least I don't think you'd be the one to think you are saving the world or serving and protecting by pulling over a lone ranger on the highway at 6 AM going 15 over.

I think you have to be in your 30's (or younger) to join the CHP, but Sheriffs will take older folk.

You did very well for yourself @ab348. Working in a small, family business definitely has its positives (I have JOB SECURITY like nobody else on the planet). However, my Dad is 72 and still working FULL TIME. About a year ago I convinced him that we should switch off Saturdays so each of us ONLY works 6 days a week 2 times per month. I know it sounds crazy, but working 5 days a week is liberating. He doesn't want to retire (ever, but that's another issue for another day). My parents have friends who have been retired for the past 10 - 15 years. They were teachers, made enough to get by, put their kids through college, paid for their weddings, helped them get on their feet, and now they collect a pension plus have their healthcare paid for AND collect social security. They have winter homes in FL and go on vacations. Speaking as someone who most likely isn't going to retire until I'm at least 80, I have a tremendous amount of respect for those that have chose to work in the public. I'm going to try and talk to my kids about these jobs when the time is right.

My sister's 41 year old husband died last April. She's working part time doing things for real estate brokers. She said she can't get a full time job because she doesn't want to work just to pay for child care. She just turned 39 yesterday. I keep telling her to apply for a job (any job) with the school district. This way she's off when her girls are off. She can still put 20 -25 years in and retire with full benefits.

Remember, even in the donut hole, you get the advantage of paying for brand named drugs at the insurance company’s discounted price. In my case, I pay what Humana would have been charged - less than retail.

The public sector can offer the kind of benefits I am lucky to have, but it can be a soul-crushing, mind-numbing daily grind. Certainly nothing like the kind of engagement one has when it is your business and your success. I could not stand another day in the job I was in when I retired despite being 3 years short of max pension which would have meant another maybe $9-10K/yr for the rest of my life. I just could not stand it any longer. If you are working in your own business and feel that way I cannot imagine how awful that would feel, but I suspect you do not have that problem.

I'd be the one daring to enforce distracted driving, turn signal, crosswalk, etc laws. Dealing with entitled eastsiders might get old, however. I'd probably end up with a hit on me, or enraging enough of the "I want to speak to a manager" (never worked a day in their life) types who flip out when they are held accountable for the first time ever.

I know state patrol hires into 40s or 50s, I suspect some other LEO forces aren't far off.

I have no data, but I suspect many funds in Murka aren't as well-managed, and I know there's no way some recipients (like my friend's parents) invested anything close to their withdrawals at a ROI possible by a private sector saver.

Sometimes the "attracting talent" line for leadership salaries becomes just a cover-up for excess.

@graphicguy @kyfdx have either of you been to Fifty West Brewing? My sister and BIL took my parents there and they really liked the beer and think I would do. They want to bring me back some...if either of you have been there, any suggestions? With the exception of stouts I'm pretty open as far as beer styles.

I miss not having donuts, especially Boston Cream. However, to work off the 320 calories in one donut you would have to run for about an hour. I say to myself, would I rather run for an hour.....or, do without the donut?

Spot on, Chap. My urologist surgeon, a Canadian originally, keeps reminding me not to gain weight and to lose by lifestyle changes. The best calorie counter is the mouth. He had been to a conference where a speaker had pointed out how much work it took to undo 9 jelly beans. Amazing.

It’s a pretty cool place. Coast-to-Coast IPA is pretty good, and they have a Witbier named Doom Pedal that is popular.

Overall, it’s an average craft brewer for the Cincinnati area, but the grading scale is tough, here. We have an embarrassment of riches, when it comes to micro breweries.

If you come to town, I’d recommend a visit. Their restaurant is very good, as well.

That's the other side of the coin too. I have a good friend I went to college with. It took him a little longer than 4 years to graduate. When he finally did, he was looking for a job while trying to get into grad school. A friend of a friend got him a job as a Union Door Man in New York City at this swanky building on the upper east side. The pay is good, he has excellent benefits, & for the past few years now has "normal" hours (He started out working 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm with Tuesday & Wednesday being his days off). That being said, he is an intellectual and the boredom just drives him nuts. At 42, he is I think 5 or 7 years away from being able to "retire" with a partial pension and benefits. He wants out, bad. His wife and I convinced him to wait it out, then do what he wants when the time comes.

I just read a very good (but long) British article about how you will never lose weight, just doing exercises. In fact, you could gain because it makes you hungry and you eat more. No, if you want to be able to wear horizontal stripes, you have to watch calories, and learn a new way of eating.

The nine jelly beans story would be interesting...probably have to do a half hour of running.

It’s a pretty cool place. Coast-to-Coast IPA is pretty good, and they have a Witbier named Doom Pedal that is popular.

Overall, it’s an average craft brewer for the Cincinnati area, but the grading scale is tough, here. We have an embarrassment of riches, when it comes to micro breweries.

If you come to town, I’d recommend a visit. Their restaurant is very good, as well.

Thanks for the recommendations, it'll be a good change from Rhinegeist. My sister and BIL think very highly of the beer and food there. I'll have to settle for the beer for now but will make it a point to get to the restaurant next time I am in town.

This is a pet peeve of mine that was instigated back in the '80s by my family doctor at the time. I'd go in there for something and in the course of conversation mention some story I'd seen in the news about a study of some sort. He would rant and rave about how "the lay press" (I love that phrase) have no clue how many studies are done that contradict each other and that they shouldn't report on stuff until it is recommended (not just published) as policy by a professional association. These days the media is even worse for doing this sort of stuff.

In the case of this particular one I can attest it is false based on personal experience. I used to be very heavy when I was young and once I got out on my own I began getting much more active, mostly a whole lot of walking. I was eating a healthy menu but nothing outrageously extreme and I was still going to bars at night, having bar & grill lunches during the week, etc., yet the lbs started falling off after I began my walking routine and kept falling off. I lost close to 120 lbs over about 2 years when I was in my mid to late 20s.

When I hurt my knee I could no longer maintain the walking and guess what? Some of the lbs came back. Not all, thank goodness.

FAKE NEWS, I tells ya.

I took my brother who has moved into the retirement home to the license bureau, to return his car plates, just so know one finds them and uses them in an illegal way and to get a refund for the unused portion which would have been $30.

They couldn't give him a refund because he needed the 2018 sticker on the plate, he only had 2012. He has receipts to show he paid every year. At first I thought 2013 fell off and took the others with it. Then I realized, he bought the car in 2012 so the dealer put that one on. All the others from 2013 to 2018 he had put on the plastic cover........when the dealer bought the car....for a meazly $4000 the stickers were still on the plastic cover!

I don't think it is fake news at all. There is a lot of fake medical news and a lot of what is reported gets messed up because reporters don't understand what they are writing about.

BUT, I weighed 176 and now I weigh 146. I exercise way more than average people, about 2 hours of tennis or pickleball a day 5 or 6 days a week, and some weight stuff. I know, I lost 90% of the weight I did thru diet, not exercise. If I ate what I used to I would gain 10 pounds in 2 months.

People who lose weight and keep it off have to revert to a new eating pattern.

If you eat a butter tart, you would have to run for an hour and a half to burn it off....you can't exercise that much to try to undo what you have eaten!

My wife is an RD - she tells me all the time that the simple way to lose weight is to reduce the amount of calories you are taking in. That's it. However, to lose weight in a healthy way and maintain that weight loss is through a combination of diet and exercise.

I can you tell you from experience that if you work out hard multiple times a week, especially lifting weights you will likely put on weight. Why? Muscle is heavier than fat. Yes, you need to eat more but you can eat healthy and get the calories you need without increasing your fat.

And, lastly, everyone has a different metabolism. What works for one will not work for another.

It is not a linear relationship though, Driver. People who exercise regularly jack up their metabolism so their caloric intake gets consumed more readily. But I agree that it is likely a combo of a number of different things.

One of my theories based solely upon a small anecdotal sample of people I know is a relationship between reduced smoking prevalence and obesity. I know the old chestnut about gaining weight when quitting smoking has been around forever but I was quite surprised a few tines over the last couple of years to cross paths with either old girlfriends or former co-workers, all of whom used to smoke, who have all quit the evil habit and now are much heavier, in one case almost unrecognizable. Now I know they are also all older and that your metabolism slows down as you age but I do wonder how much the war on smoking has resulted in the number of roly-poly folks I see out there.

It was HARD, but I managed to stay out of the political discussions this time. They ALWAYS get ugly, nobody convinces anyone else of ANYTHING and friendships go away.

I do have to say that never in my life have I seen such a division in our country and this is NOT good!

Hopefully the divisions improve and we get a little more bipartisan. Otherwise, I have to wonder if the US will end up as several separate countries instead of one down the road. It may end up the only solution if government remains basically unworkable and untrusted, while Americans refuse any compromises on issues. Kind of scary, and sad.
