It is not a linear relationship though, Driver. People who exercise regularly jack up their metabolism so their caloric intake gets consumed more readily. But I agree that it is likely a combo of a number of different things.

One of my theories based solely upon a small anecdotal sample of people I know is a relationship between reduced smoking prevalence and obesity. I know the old chestnut about gaining weight when quitting smoking has been around forever but I was quite surprised a few tines over the last couple of years to cross paths with either old girlfriends or former co-workers, all of whom used to smoke, who have all quit the evil habit and now are much heavier, in one case almost unrecognizable. Now I know they are also all older and that your metabolism slows down as you age but I do wonder how much the war on smoking has resulted in the number of roly-poly folks I see out there.

I would estimate.........diet is responsible for losing 90 to 95% of weight loss....exercise is good, but only loses 5 to 10% of weight. In combination, it may improve appetite......good if it is the correct food and not just empty calories. It also gets you out of a chair where you can sit and eat potato chips, chicken wings and tacos, with 3 or 4 beers in the evening (probably equal to all the calories you should have in a day, and anything over becomes fat).

My wife is an RD - she tells me all the time that the simple way to lose weight is to reduce the amount of calories you are taking in. That's it. However, to lose weight in a healthy way and maintain that weight loss is through a combination of diet and exercise.

I can you tell you from experience that if you work out hard multiple times a week, especially lifting weights you will likely put on weight. Why? Muscle is heavier than fat. Yes, you need to eat more but you can eat healthy and get the calories you need without increasing your fat.

And, lastly, everyone has a different metabolism. What works for one will not work for another.

That is what I tell my wife if I gain 2 pounds....it must be fat turning into muscle mass.
I agree, things work differently for different people, but, the best exercise for losing weight, is pushing yourself away from the table.

This happens a lot. For one thing, when someone quits smoking they begin to taste food again and so they appreciate the taste of food. Secondly, a cigarette is like a pacifier....without it, some people need a substitute, and that is food.

People like food, it feels good eating and it is comforting. It is hard to cut back, especially when it is everywhere. Man, I am getting hungry thinking about it....and I don't mean carrot sticks. Oh well, time to go to bed.

I just got back from the KY Bar Association convention; it was my last chance to go for free(as a judge) so I thought I should take advantage of it. High points were presentations from John Douglas, author of Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit(and the Netflix series) and Graham Moore, whose book The Last Days of Night-about the patent fight between Edison, Tesla, and Westinghouse over the incandescent bulb is about to become a movie.
I ran into a lot of old friends, who, when they found out about my future job, almost all replied, "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?"

Spot on, Chap. My urologist surgeon, a Canadian originally, keeps reminding me not to gain weight and to lose by lifestyle changes. The best calorie counter is the mouth. He had been to a conference where a speaker had pointed out how much work it took to undo 9 jelly beans. Amazing.
I just read a very good (but long) British article about how you will never lose weight, just doing exercises. In fact, you could gain because it makes you hungry and you eat more. No, if you want to be able to wear horizontal stripes, you have to watch calories, and learn a new way of eating. The nine jelly beans story would be interesting...probably have to do a half hour of running. WHY EXERCISE WON'T WORK FOR WEIGHT LOSS
I can tell you from personal experience that that is simply wrong. You might temporally gain weight at first but excersizing will help you lose weight. Its simply burn more calories than you take in you lose weight. When I went to lose weight I kept my diet the same but started to exercise and the weight did go down.

It was HARD, but I managed to stay out of the political discussions this time. They ALWAYS get ugly, nobody convinces anyone else of ANYTHING and friendships go away. I do have to say that never in my life have I seen such a division in our country and this is NOT good!
There is the song with the lyrics "The good old days weren't always good, tomorrow isn't as bad as it seems". In our past there were times where actual fist fights broke out on the floor of Congress, the 60's weren't a cake walk and there was a time we went to war with ourselfs and killed off more than 5% of the population.

Yes we have been divided before and at times more so than now, but we have always pulled through.

Yes, there is a division, but I think it's amplified by the 24/7 news cycle and the host of media outlets from every end of the political spectrum.

Trying to look at all the positives life has to offer.  Instead of thinking “Hi Ho. Hi Ho.  It’s off to work I go” on this picture perfect, spring Saturday AM, I say to myself:  “It was a beautiful day.  The sun beat down... I was a drivin’.”  Any day I can jump on the highway, set my cruise control, and not touch it until I get 3/4 if he way across the Cross Bronx Expressway is a good day;). Happy Father’s Day Guys!

Your diet was probably pretty good to begin with. Also, you exercise far more than "normal" people...riding a bike 50 miles a day.
    Men burn about 2500 calories a day. Here is one days worth of food that would just maintain your weight;

Using the sample 2,500-calorie meal plan above, a 2,500-calorie daily menu might include 2 cups of whole-grain cereal, 2 cups of low-fat milk, 1 cup of melon and 1 egg for breakfast.
A mid-morning snack may include 1 cup of low-fat yogurt, 1 ounce of almonds and 5 whole-grain crackers.
For lunch, try 3 ounces of grilled chicken, 1 cup of brown rice, one small orange and 2 cups of leafy greens topped with 2 tablespoons of Italian salad dressing.
An afternoon snack may consist of 1 cup of raw carrots with 1 ounce of mixed nuts.
For dinner, try 3 ounces of grilled tilapia or salmon, 1 cup of cooked quinoa or couscous and 1.5 cups of steamed broccoli. An evening snack might consist of 3 cups of popped popcorn.

That isn't a lot of food. Add some french fries, gravy, potatoes, rice, bread, an ice cream cone, a beer, chips, some chocolate, a slice of pie and you will be way over.

To lose 1 pound, you have to burn 3600 calories. If you could cut 100 calories a day from the diet above, it would take you 36 days to lose 1 pound. If you ran for a 30 minutes a day (burn 300 calories) it would take you 12 days to lose 3600 calories.

You can lose weight through exercise, but it is easier to just not eat the food to begin with. Look at the food that day to stay at 2500 calories...it isn't much. If you have a hamburger and FFs, that will be about 800 calories right there, doesn't leave much for breakfast and dinner.

All this counting calories and weighing food reminds me of the guy, around 60 years old, who asked his doctor what he needed to do to live a long life. The doc started asking questions about his lifestyle. Do you date a lot of women and stay out late? Oh no he said. Do you drink much? Hardly any at all. Do you eat a lot of fried greasy food? No, strictly vegan. Do you like fast cars and speed? Heavens no. Indulge in any dangerous activities? No way. The doc looked at him and said, the way you live, why bother to prolong it?

Exactly.  And, I might add, don't believe anything you hear from employees at a liquor store.  I had a guy at a large chain swear up and down that one of their "house brands" 15 year old scotch was every bit as good as Johnnie Walker Blue.  Sadly, I was feeling cheap that day, so I bit on it.  Of course, it was garbage and it took me several months to choke it down.   :o

Yes but Army basic training rather contradicts that theory. I have seen wart hogs turned into cougars. On the other hand, not too many weight loss clinics feature obstacle courses and live-ammo exercises.

I wish I'd been able to save some of my box of comics from my youth. I believe Mom threw them out after I went to college.

As for weight loss and exercise my 20-something son just came by and said he'd lost 17 pounds since December. He quit doing really stressful exercises at the facilities after work. Instead, he's just exercising and keeping active. He feels the harder exercise made him eat more.

That's consistent with what has been posted here: activity raises metabolism. Hard exercise is not needed.

I was probably 15 pounds overweight when I did my Army Basic Training at Fort Ord and I have to say I lost that much and probably another ten pounds during that time. I was actually what I would call "skinny".

On the other hand some guys gained weight. They warned us this would happen. Sad to say, some guys had never been able to eat that well. I heard one guy mention that he had usually been hungry as a kid most of the time.

I'll join in with the exercise = metabolism thought. I seem to have a slow metabolism (compared to my dad, who never exercised and was always fit). When I was young and around sports and activities, I could have all the carbs I want and not look back. However, in college, I had the freshman 15, then the sophomore six, junior jeleven, senior seven. After school, I started work right away in an office setting, and my employer seems to like to feed us. A few years ago I started exercising, and cut some junk out of my diet (not nearly all that I should, but I am not that strong-willed nor looking for austerity). I lost a bit of weight, and I definitely sleep better now too. I jog 3-4 miles a day, 5 days a week. My blood pressure and cholesterol are also good no doubt because of this. Small changes make a big deal.

Many years ago, my wife and I joined a gym. I'd do the exercises for an hour, saw a great place for breakfast across the road, eggs, Farmers sausage, really nice greasy home fries, rye toast.....I got so hungry doing the exercise and seeing the restaurant.....I was gaining weight going to the gym.

And that is what I am saying. Not trying to convince someone to change their life and become Rocky.

Here is another thought. I lost 30 pounds - it took 3 years. Losing 30 pounds is like carrying around a 30 pound weight all day. Think of the stress that has on the body....particularly knees. Not to mention the extra pumping the heart has to do.

OK, don't want to go on and on about this....people want to enjoy their food.

Your diet was probably pretty good to begin with. Also, you exercise far more than "normal" people...riding a bike 50 miles a day. Men burn about 2500 calories a day. Here is one days worth of food that would just maintain your weight; Using the sample 2,500-calorie meal plan above, a 2,500-calorie daily menu might include 2 cups of whole-grain cereal, 2 cups of low-fat milk, 1 cup of melon and 1 egg for breakfast.
My diet wasn't that great back then and it was long before I started biking. I was maybe 60 pounds give or take overweight, I dropped most of that excess weight just by working out. Mainly walking, aerobics and some weight work. Didn't change a think about my diet and over the course of time dropped 40 pounds.

Again if you become more active you will lose weight. How much weight depends on how more active you get. Park at the far end of the parking lot, walk around the neighborhood instead of watching that rerun of Hogans Heros for the thousand time, take the stairs instead of the elevator. It adds up.

Everyone's tastebuds are different and everyone will have a different view of a particular taste depending on time of day, time of year, the environment and the such. A Scotch you really liked there months ago may not seem as good today.

Now my personal opinion is that Johnny Walker isn't as good as many people make it to be. It's not bad but I you can find a lot better whiskeys for a lot less in price.

Bleh. Alcohol. I don't care what surrounds it in the bottle, ethanol is just disgusting to my palate and thoroughly ruins whatever pleasant flavors might also be in there. Happily, in my entire life, I suspect my combined consumption of ethanol is probably less than a single beer.

Yes but Army basic training rather contradicts that theory. I have seen wart hogs turned into cougars. On the other hand, not too many weight loss clinics feature obstacle courses and live-ammo exercises.
I was one of those who gained weight in boot camp. During high school I was rarely home, either at work, school or somewhere with my friends so I missed a lot of meals. Boot camp was regulated and so I was present for every meal.

I have to wonder if a lot of that stuff will survive here past the costs of the boomers getting really old - another 25 years or so, when expenses really mount. It's to the point where there will be two classes of retirees - plebes eating cat food, and special deluxe/public sector, with a lot of funding necessary. There's going to be some public outcry at some point.

The pension plan I have is funded at just over 100% according to the current actuarial report and both the employees and employer contribute equally. Just before I retired I was paying in around $1K.mo which the gov was matching. The eligible amount of salary gets cut off somewhere around $120K/yr too so as gov starts paying for more high-priced jobs as has been the trend here they do not suffer so much later on the pension front. That is actually a bigger concern IMO. Here, the province used to be very frugal with salaries. Over the last 10 years or so they started paying executive types a lot more supposedly to attract them but the result was that everyone under them all got jacked up salaries as well. I don't mind paying a good CEO what he's worth but paying $200K a year for a mediocre finance or HR type irks me.

I'm lucky that my pension is also fully funded by the poor taxpayers since my farm pension doesn't exist except for pocket change. In fact my government pension just told me they're giving me MORE money. Never had to contribute a cent.

I also have a 401k and profit sharing from my current employer which has already made me a hundredaire.

My monthly medication cost is $.85.

I may have consumed a few beers, there. ( more than three, less than 100 ).

It’s a pretty cool place. Coast-to-Coast IPA is pretty good, and they have a Witbier named Doom Pedal that is popular.

Overall, it’s an average craft brewer for the Cincinnati area, but the grading scale is tough, here. We have an embarrassment of riches, when it comes to micro breweries.

If you come to town, I’d recommend a visit. Their restaurant is very good, as well.
I don't know if I would drink anything called "Doom Pedal".

WHY EXERCISE WON'T WORK FOR WEIGHT LOSS

Sorry, I'm calling that FAKE NEWS.

This is a pet peeve of mine that was instigated back in the '80s by my family doctor at the time.I began my walking routine and kept falling off. I lost close to 120 lbs over about 2 years when I was in my mid to late 20s.

When I hurt my knee I could no longer maintain the walking and guess what? Some of the lbs came back. Not all, thank goodness.

    FAKE NEWS, I tells ya.
I don't think it is fake news at all. There is a lot of fake medical news and a lot of what is reported gets messed up because reporters don't understand what they are writing about.

BUT, I weighed 176 and now I weigh 146. I exercise way more than average people, about 2 hours of tennis or pickleball a day 5 or 6 days a week, and some weight stuff. I know, I lost 90% of the weight I did thru diet, not exercise. If I ate what I used to I would gain 10 pounds in 2 months.

People who lose weight and keep it off have to revert to a new eating pattern.

If you eat a butter tart, you would have to run for an hour and a half to burn it off....you can't exercise that much to try to undo what you have eaten!

I'm the other way around. Every summer I lost 20-30 pounds and gained it back in the winter. At the time I would eat like a horse in the summer including every junk food known to man. Even though I ate less in the winter the lack of exercise put the weight back on.

It restores my faith in government when I see a person of your integrity put up with the crapola of politics to serve your community.
