For new year's we didn't have a great big dinner ... for me it's traditional to have black-eyed peas and cabbage .. we also had corn on the cob (a new Indiana tradition?) and a pan of cornbread ... that was it ..

Hey Patti! Keep checking in as much as you can and get well soon.

A mellow New Year's Eve for us. Just stayed at home and grilled salmon teriyaki.

We had salmon (marinated in soy sauce, orange juice & garlic; yum, yum!) New Year's Eve too!

My family really went wild NYE. We ate junk food and all had our jammies on by 7 pm, played Cranium, watched 3 rented movies, opened a bottle of sparkling grape juice at midnight, and went to bed. Do we know how to party, or what?!!! ;-)
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
For NYE, we had rack of lamb. It's simple, quick, and a favorite. It's so easy, I really need to show the girls how to do it...then they can cook for me!

The eve was mellow for us. Some of our very close friends were back from the holidays from China so a bunch of us just hung out at our place to catch up.

On New Year's Day, my wife and I had traditional Japanese ozoni soup with homemade mochi. Mmmmm. Good stuff.

We went to a party at some friends...around 20 people plus kids (they all went upstairs and played PS2 games all night except when they got hungry)...Susan made baked ziti, there was chicken in a light teriyaki sauce, meatballs, roasted potatoes, macaroni salad, some other items, plus lots of desserts, including a cake that had dark chocolate frosting, dark chocolate filling, dark chocolate cake, and dark chocolate sprinkles...the kind of cake the Small family loves! We finally got to bed around 2 AM, which is the latest in many years...of course, Dina woke me up at 7:30AM, ready for her walk!

We are in the midst of finalizing plans for Michael's Bar-Mitzvah on the 25th...how time has flown.

Bat1161 and I will be doing The 48hrs of Tri-state starting tonight! We will join up with 8 other subies and 16 other people for a trek around NY/NJ/PA. Snow reports look like we'll hit snow through the Adirondack Mountains tomorrow for that leg + snow pretty much the whole trip. Hopefully AWD will help us keep in contact with the ground! :) I *may* update some pics at http://isuzu-suvs.com/events/48hrs-2/ so keep an eye on the site.

a turkey roasted in peanut oil. My brother in law likes to cook. He bought the roaster and used it the first time at my house. The two of us were outside in a snow storm, wearing hooded sweatshirts, standing around a boiling pot of peanut oil. As my father in law put it, we looked like 2 homeless people. The turkey turned out great and cooked in less than an hour.

Isn't deep fried turkey a common southern dish? I've heard this from several of my internet friends from the south.

    -mike
  • jay_24jay_24 Member Posts: 536
Frying turkey in peanut oil has become very popular in the upper mid west (WI/MN). Basically its a big pot, heat/flame unit and a propane tank. Makes a great feast fast!
However there are lots of recalls/warnings about these units. Seems that if you have too much oil they boil over and the oil hits the flame causing one big fire... with an attached propane tank.

I haven't used one yet but a co-worker and neighbor use them often.

but the consequences can be dire. I saw this on video....Big honkin vat of roiling peanut oil, but overfilled, so our intrepid cooks plop this big ol' bird in there, which immediately displaces close to a gallon of oil over onto the open flame. Foom! goes the fryer.

Talk about being out for week and a half, 130+ new messages. But anyway, I wanted to wish everybody happy, safe, healthy and prosperous new year.
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Yeah, I've seen one of those fire safety videos where they make a turkey fryer flambe! Pretty exciting stuff.

    Ken
  • nygregnygreg Member Posts: 1,936
when we lowered the bird in, it began to boil violently. We did it very slowly. Yes, the propane tank was 3 feet away. He measured the right amount of oil with water and the bird first. It is dangerous though. BTW, my brother in law is a NYC firefighter. They live to eat.

but I would be lying!!!! Oh well, two weeks away was a luxury and now it is time to pay up.

Hope everyone is safe and well rested.

BTW - Serge: "Best Buy" has a sale on this week on the Motorola T6250 22 channel combo FRS/GMRS radios. 1.0w on the shared FRS/GMRS (#1-7), 0.5w on FRS only frequencies (#8-14), and 1.0w on GMRS only (#15-22) channels. That is about as good as it gets. With rebate they come down to $25 each. I bought three last night.

And now for the surprise - our FCC wants a $75 fee for the privilege of using these things. So now the question - return them and stay with FRS, or pay the fee....

I'm going to try to hang out there, but I won't be participating (more time for you folks). Enjoy!

Quiet New Year here. But I cooked a traditional dinner for us. A pork roast with saurkraut (sp) (with apples, potatoes and dried cranberries) and, what my kids call, "serious butter beans". I only make them once or twice a year, so it's "serious". My eldest son actually learned how to cook them last year and did it himself this year for his girlfriends family. Ah - traditions - a great way to start a year!

I actually got to drive in some snow last night. I didn't want to come home. The WRX handled great, but it is hard to stay slow due to road conditions. I feel compelled to show off. I stopped for fuel and some older gent. walked over from a nearby store to "check out that that fast one" he has heard about. I think he'll be stopping into a dealer soon after a 20 minute discussion that turned into taking him for a ride. Needless to say, my husband was not thrilled that I invited a total stranger to take a ride with me in a nasty snow storm. I guess I got caught up in the moment - freedom from home, snow and a fun car.

I hope to see you all tonight!

You do live dangerously! Didn't your momma ever lecture you about the hazards of picking up strangers? Great story, though. I made an excuse to go out Friday afternoon during our heavy storm for a ride. OBW + winter tires makes for a fine handling machine.

Glad to hear that you were up to making a family feast and for a solo drive.

You should be walking tall. Your decision to buy snow tires is turning out to be a very good decision. I still haven't purchased a new set for the Sienna. Gives me an excuse to use the OB more.

The February 2003 Car & Driver has a 10-way family sedan comparo. The Legacy L (bottom of the line) 4-cylinder, 5-speed tied for fifth place with the Altima 3.5 SE (top of the line) 6-cylinder, 5-speed.

    #1 Honda Accord EX 4-cylinder, 5-speed
    #2 Mazda 6i 4-cylinder, 5-speed
    #3 VW Passat GL 1.8 Turbo 4-cylinder, 5-speed
    #4 Toyota Camry SE 4-cylinder, 5-speed
    #7 Dodge Stratus 6-cylinder, 5-speed
#8 Hyundai Sonata GLS 6-cylinder, auto
    #9 Kia Optima LX 4-cylinder, 5-speed
    #10 Saturn L200 4-cylinder, 5-speed

Based upon the points scoring, had C&D tested the base Legacy L against the Altima 2.5 SE 4-cylinder, the Altima clearly would have come in at #6.

Based upon the points scoring, had they tested the Legacy GT (more "features and amenities"), against the Altima 3.5 SE 6-cylinder, the Altima would still have come in at #6.

If they had tested a Legacy GT, it could probably have tied with the Camry at #4.

A very positive Legacy review otherwise, that the GT's wider tires and suspension mods would have improved.
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
...shows that Legacy needs more power. Personally, I don't think it needs to chace the likes of accord and Camry. They're too mainstream and boring. Altima is a good target, but then so is Volvo and A4.
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
When Beth first heard that I was going to spent $1500 on snow tires on rims for both cars she cringed. The other day she thanked me... Our driveway would be unmanageable some mornings without them.

Yet I am still not quite sure why I did it. I haven't bought snows since around 1985 for my F-150. One morning in late October I suddenly felt that this was going to be among the worst winters in years, and I decided not to fight the feeling. Strange.

    Now about that stock market....

BTW - How is the OBW running with the head gasket work complete. Did they get everything back together OK? It sounds like Colonial (I assume you went back there) took decent care of you. I was happy with the Ford side of the house.

If you want snow driving skills, join us on the next 48hrs! We hit some form of snow everyday, from 3-5" on the ground, and still coming down hard, to just wet roads. It was amusing: most of NYS we passed through was forecasting 12-18 inches by nightfall. Throughout it all, the Dunlop Sport A2's handled quite well. I never felt any loss of control.

We even saw a Baja being driven around!

Serge- I've had AT&T for almost 5 years and I've been very satisfied. I pay $14.95 a month for unlimited Internet access. I've never gotten a busy signal and the connection almost never gets dropped. I can't comment on their customer service cause I've never had cause to call. I like AT&T because all I need is an Internet connection and an Email capability (10 MB of storage). You don't even have to start at their homepage if you don't want to. Basically you don't get all the fluff and virtual web junk that AOL (and others) force on you. Having said that, someone new to the web would probably be better served by one of the full-service providers.

Hope this helps and the usual disclaimers about YMMV :-)

last Sat. I traded in my WRX wagon for a 2003 Jeep Wrangler Sport.

Ok..I'll pause for the shock, confusion, and perhaps indignation....

Ok...You all know how much I loved my WRX & (this is where it hurts, especially in the pockets) how much $$ I spent making it the way I wanted it.

What I didn't share in great detail was how botched up the Vishnu installation was on my WRX. I should have never done the installfest, car-club thing. I ended up taking it to a professional shop to salvage the unfinished install. Not too long after I began getting an uppipe leak that got worse. Additionally, I began getting another leak near the center pipe. Basically, my WRX never ran right after the Vishnu install. The ECU does not function smoothly w/the unichip. There are numerous posts about this over on the Impreza Club. It's subtle but there is some hesitation at half throttle. Vishnu has come out w/a piggyback electronics piece for the unichip to alleviate it...another $150 - $195. I also needed to replace my windshield as the two cracks from either side finally met each other in a spectacular way!

I also really missed having a moonroof/sunroof. It must have something to do with surviving the grey winter days in Seattle, looking forward to long summer days.

I also get the new car itch every couple of years but it usually results in researching different vehicles and getting brochures, nothing more.
I started this cycle by getting on the waiting list for the STi. I then started looking at the RAM p/u w/Hemi, the Mazda6 w/spt pkg, Kia Sorento, Honda Accord EX coupe/sedan, Saab 9-3 Linear, Mazda Miata LS, etc. What I realized was that any vehicle I get would have to have AWD or 4WD and have at least a sunroof.

I don't know exactly when the Wrangler came to be a consideration. You know, to me the Wrangler was always something that seemed to be a one-trick pony. It looked fun and all but I could never imagine it as my only vehicle. I started reading the Wrangler forums and researching the option pkgs. The more I read, the more I was hooked. Those Wrangler folks love their babies as much as the Soobie Crew! Even now, when people see my black Wrangler, they say "oh I miss my Jeep", or "I'm going to buy one again", etc.
The Wrangler interior is just a notch below the interior of the WRX. A couple of surprises were the more complete instrumentation (oil pressure & altmeter), better (more user friendly) cruise control, a 12volt outlet that also functions when the vehicle is off, much better cupholders, and a bigger, deeper console. I know it seems I'm justifying but these were things I noticed after I bought, not a part of my buying decision.

I stopped by the dealer on Sat to get a brochure and they desperately wanted to sell one to me. I knew that there was a $1000 rebate until 1/6. Long story short is that my payments dropped about $22 a month for the same term loan. I went w/a Costco deal that put me about 3.5% over invoice.

    I have the 4.0 inline 6 w/HD 5pd manual tranny.
    The options I have are:

    Dual top (soft & hard)
    A/C (came w/it)
    Dana 44 rear azle
    30" tire pkg
    Cruise
    Trac-lok
    4wheel discs
    Floor mats (came with)

The only thing missing from my wish list was the CD player & 7spkr system. I plan on adding a CD player or changer at a later date.

The color is black (oh well, a Wrangler should be dirty right?)

I miss my WRX a bit but the Wrangler is so different and so much fun in a completely different way that the pain of missing my wagon is not so much. I really enjoy sitting higher and am looking forward to really going offroad for camping and such. My first big trip will be the annual Whistler ski group in Feb. I did take a trip to my folks on Sunday. I brought back a 27" TV, CPU, and keyboard w/o folding the rear seat. I put the stuff through the passenger side into the rear seat. The passenger seat folds forward and completely up.

Well, I had to let you all know what I'd done. I still would like to participate on the Crew w/the Soobie knowledge I've gained. I hope that's okay. I really enjoy everyone here! Additionally, I have my set of Dunlop Wintersports on WRX OEM wheels to sell, along with new Hawk front brake pads still in the box, and Goodridge Stainless Steel brake lines still in the pkg.

Feeling sad, happy, and a bit guilty in Seattle,
    Stephen

We're not new to the web..just tired of AOL. We've been debating between Earthlink (5000 Delta miles) or ATT Worldnet (16.95/mo plus our ATT Long distance fee waived for a year...3.95/mo).
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
I had Prodigy for quite awhile, then switched to Earthlink and kept them through about 5 moves (3 cities, and 2 states) because they were wonderful. We recently networked 3 computers in our home and put them on ATT cable. It's been reliable, but mixed as far as speed goes. Some days we zip at unbelievable speeds, and sometimes I'm not sure it's as fast as the dial-up. S/O (significant other) has had MSN as a result of a 3 year contract with rebate at Best Buy a few years ago. He's been very happy with MSN (but I think my Earthlink was better) IMHO.

Actually instead of cancelling the Earthlink I recently "gave" it to the daughter in Hawaii for Christmas. Last year we gave the daughters in Hawaii and Texas each a computer (and the youngest got one when she went to college) to keep us all in touch a bit better. They have had 'spotty' ISP subscription, so their present THIS year is to have ISP continuously ... lol

    AIEEEE! No more WRX?!?!

I'm a bit surprised that you picked a Jeep of all the choices you had. Will you be tempted by the STi when it becomes available? ;-)

You are always welcome here, don't worry about that. :-)

    Stephen--

is it safe to say you now agree with my opinion on modifying new vehicles?

personally, it's Never Touch The Powertrain Again. I won't spend real money on a car I'm carrying a loan on, either. tire & wheel upgrades... sure. suspension... maybe. powertrain NO WAY!!!

although you should've posted about your problems in Mods or Maint & Repair... we could've helped.

good luck with the Wrangler and yes I'm sure you're still welcome here. I suspected something was up when you stopped posting... I'll see you in the SC Cafe. :-D I've had friends with Wranglers and yes I do think they are a one-trick pony and I personally can't fathom how they fetch the prices they do today considering what you get. BUT, I'm happy if you're happy.

Stephen- I knew something was up!!! You've been way to silent lately (must have been the guilt complex). You needlessly worried though, after all, we still like Colin, even after his betrayal :-) Besides, you got to go with what puts a smile on your face and if the Wrangler does that for you then more power to you.
