good news, some places take electronic copies. so you don't need as many originals as you used to. But better to get extras, because getting more later is a royal pain.

I think I ordered five death certificates for my great aunt. But, she didn’t have that many accounts that might want them - CDs and checking with a local bank (1), investments with that goofy institutional brokerage (2), then a checking account with the consumer arm of that brokerage (3). No life insurance.  I’m sure others wanted copies, but I got by with only a few.

Better to have them and not need them than the reverse.

My dad has been gone for over three years, and we still have occasion to provide them. They weren't in the safe at moms house, but my sister did finally locate them in a folder in the front coat closet.

When my paternal grandmother passed, it got so bad that my aunts were apparently fighting about individual pieces of (questionable looking) carnival glass, not to mention any money or her house. My dad just stepped back and let them have at it. Life is too short.

Inheritance tax exemption is around 5.5MM IIRC, I'll wager most here fall under that.

I've heard it said that you don't know anyone completely until you've watched them share an inheritance. My mother had a couple of tens of thousands left at the end, and it was a truly enlightening experience to see what happened when she passed. That, and much else, is how I've developed my swell attitude.

I need to get a trust set up this year. I have four kids of varying needs, two of whom are products of a mixed family. We have two dwellings, and I have a higher net worth than I ever imagined was possible in my younger years. I'm simplifying things as best I can, but will need the help of a lawyer before it's all over with.

See, I avoided any reference to politics, though inheritance taxes provide a rich target, to say nothing of, well, you know.

Battles over estates were some of the nastiest disputes I had to preside over when I was a judge. One mother-in-law sued her son-in-law for $45- claiming that was the value of the flowers he took home-that she testified belonged to her-after the funeral of his wife/her daughter...

Well, I know after my dad died, the whole family dynamic changed. Even before he did pass, my mother started threatening me about "the money". If I didn't do exactly what she said, she'd bring up, "the money". It wore me out. I eventually had to cut her & the rest out of our lives as things became toxic. She met our kids maybe a couple of times in the next 17 or so years. I had to introduce her to her grandson at my grandmothers funeral but she was quite cold to him which was a shame because he's a very warm and genuine guy. Cut us out in her will but since it was expected, just didn't matter. Imagine being so mean until the day you died is just something I could not wrap my head around. I'd never do anything to make any of our kids just walk away.
Funny how when one grows up in dysfunction, it becomes the norm. Once I got married, saw that it wasn't the norm and felt relieved. We raised our kids with much love and I still to this day, tell them I love them after we talk. Something I never ever got which was very hard. That's why I always tell them to never judge anyone because you have no idea their story. And our stories effect how we take on life!

Sorry you went through that, Sandy.

On a lighter note, didn't one of our members here used to live in the UP in Michigan? I'm trying to plan a road trip from Louisville - a night or two in Detroit, then to the UP, and on to Duluth for a night or two. Any suggestions? So the Kia is nearing 31K miles, and we just got it's final oil change before returning it the first week of September at the end of the lease.

First, the 30K service is a rip off at the Kia dealer my wife went to, so I'm not doing that. However, the air filter and cabin filter are due for replacement, and I should be able to have that done for little money. Is there any reason to splurge on maintenance just before lease return?

3 tires were reported at 3/32nds. Does this mean I need to get new tires before returning the car, or if we stop driving it today, we'll be OK?

if you are already under on the tires, might as well get them now so you at least get some use out of them. And try to run it up to as close to 36,000 miles as possible. Since you are paying for them anyway!

I actually opened the hood on the TLX today (for the 2nd time). Very clean under there! Checked the oil, and at 2,500 miles, it was bang on the full dot on the dipstick. So that is a good sign! Also can see where the big hood adds value. There is a ton of room under there. The benefit of sticking a 4 in an engine bay designed to fit a V6! must be super easy to work on that engine.

needed extensive maintenance though. I had to top up the washer fluid.

@corvette - can't help you with the UP, but in 1986, I took a road trip from my home in CA to MI. Ended up along Lake Huron, town of Oscoda.

If you have the time, I recommend you take US 23 - takes you right along the edge of the lake for a couple hundred miles.

I'll agree with others and say just go ahead and bite the bullet on tires. Double check that there is not a brand or rating required for turn in. After that drive, drive, drive till you hit 35,999 miles! Thats the only point it makes sense to park it.

My mother had a couple of tens of thousands left at the end, and it was a truly enlightening experience to see what happened when she passed. That, and much else, is how I've developed my swell attitude.

I know the feeling. My mom died about 12 years prior to my dad, and during that 12 years he got involved with a woman who was like a crow, attracted to any bright shiny object like money or assets. Her and her sons cleaned him out, but by the end his will had been changed so she got everything anyway, though he didn't have much by them since she had it all. Neither me or my siblings got anything other than a souvenir - I got a few of his WWII medals, that's it.

Funnily enough, about 5 years ago she called me one day out of the blue, the only time I heard from her in about 20 years (which was fine by me). She was moving and dad's desk, which was a compact, handsome, well-made antique thing I had always admired since he got it in the late 1960s, didn't make the cut. The guilts must have finally got to her since he had always said that it would be mine but she managed to forget that for a couple of decades. Now she wanted to know if I wanted it. I did but told her I would need to arrange for a service with a couple of moving guys and a truck to pick it up and get it to me, and that I would get back to her. It took me a week or so to find something, and when I called her back she told me that since I didn't get it right away she had let her son take it. Somehow that wasn't a surprise. So I missed what would have been my inheritance. No, I'm not bitter. :(

A very good friend of my wife's has a black RAM with those same color green accents on the wheels, tailgate, etc.

I told her never to rob a bank as they would find her quickly.

Her husband drives a purple Charger, so they are made for one another.

Our A3 is your basic white over black perforated leather. Since we got it early in the 2015 model year, December 2nd, wasn't many color choices besides that and black over black. Almost went with the latter color combo but played the local dealer against the one near my work place and the closer one finally relented and took my wife's offer. So she got the price she wanted at the better location with the better color combo.
I had a bit more of a color selection though I bought about a week later. Didn't want 2 white vehicles and the red they had only had black guts which was nice looking enough but knew the black perforated leather would be hot and I prefer wearing shorts 99% of the time. Once I saw the blue over beige combo, I knew I had a winner. And within a weeks time, it was parked in our garage.
she took almost 3 weeks to decide but she kept going back for a test drive just to make certain it was what she really wanted. I knew after the first drive that I wanted it but went home to really think things through. Since my previous purchase was just over a year before, wasn't 100% sure it was the best move to swap vehicles so soon. But within that week's time, came to the realization that I just should bite the bullet and go for it. And glad I did as it's been a fun ride ever since. Still loving it with over 53K on the clock.

I would just take it back to the dealership and leave it there, hand the keys to the manager, and walk away. It will probably be the best-case scenario of a default the lender will ever experience.

Probably not a good idea if he’s solvent. It’s a voluntary repo, the financing company can and probably will sell it at auction and sue for the difference between the auction price and what was owed on the lease. Can someone else in the family use the car for the remainder of the lease? Could also take it to CarMax or get a Carvana bid to see how much you’d have to kick in to get them to take it off your hands.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,847
yeah, don't need collection people dunning him. Still premature, since if he can pass the evaluation he can still drive. if he has to officially and permanently retire from driving, we will deal with it then. If I had not just gotten a car I would have used it. No one else needs it. Most likely would Carvana it and just deal with the difference if any. But if he is going to be paying regardless, could let my daughter use the miles to keep them off her Jetta (she is doing a long commute at the moment).

Sandman sorry to hear about the dysfunction and craziness you have to deal with back in the day, but yes every family has its dysfunction, that’s for sure, even my family has it fair fair share of it. That’s one thing I said when I married and have kids one day will not be that way.
