got to watch the plumber work on the kids house today. Replaced the toilet, confirming my suspicion that this was a job I never wanted to do. Nothing conceptually too difficult, but helps to have experience and not something I want to mess with. The bigger issue was all the shut off valves and the little wall cover cap were old, nasty, and needed to go. Same for the sink shut offs (I had a lot of work getting those shut totally in the first place). Plus the sink drain needed to be redone. so some busting of tile and plaster to get at the drain, and a bit of heating and soldering. Something else I won't touch. Though now that all the hard stuff is done, hooking up the sink would be a breeze!

I did take advantage of having the toilet out to replace the vinyl peel and stick tiles my daughter put down that were hacked around the toilet. Now they go underneath and look a whole lot better!

You mentioned that it didn't look to difficult to replace a toilet and possibly the only thing holding you back was you didn't have the experience doing that. If you accepted my offer to help at the flip house you would have had that experience. Rehabbing the original bathroom was done in stages so I lost track of how many times the toilet was removed then reinstalled. As I said before, we should have paid the premium price to get the model that was installed and removed via a zipper. But that's finally over. Both toilets are staying put now.

    Hope you installed a Pfeister and not a wannabe;

Any excuse to show off my Pfeister. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
    What about Ferguson?
What a Massey Ferguson...you use a tractor? Now that does outdo my Pfister!
Not a "Married with Children" fan I see.
I was....30 years ago. You will have to explain........
When Al was putting in his own bathroom he wanted a Ferguson toilet. As Al put it a Ferguson is a mans flush.

Tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM, I have to go in for my annual PET-Scan because of my bout with liver cancer 3-years ago. I hate this procedure because once they scan my entire body without the radio-active Iodine, they have to inject it into a vein and then they put me in a dark room in a recliner for one hour to give the necessary time for my body to absorb the Iodine.

Then they do another scan of my entire body. My problem is that my veins are extremely difficult to find which usually means many needle sticks until they get lucky. It usually takes two hours for the entire process.

This is necessary because the type of cancer I had is aggressive and can recur at any time. So I have my fingers crossed that it has not returned. My doctor also does an ultrasound of my liver every 6 months which is how the cancer was found back in 2016. This is nerve-racking to me. 😩

And here we have how many people use the word literally these days. I'll stand corrected if, Mr. A has availed himself of the services of a proctologist. I'm certain there a number to choose from in his area.

Let’s flip back to appliances for just a moment. As most here know, if I buy something.....ANYTHING, I expect it to operate the way it was intended for at least the warranty period. If not, I’ll do my utmost to hold the manufacturer accountable for not holding up their end.

Onto the appliance story. I’ve mentioned in here from time to time how much trouble I had with my LG French Door-in-Door refrigerator that I bought about 2 years ago. Upon delivery it emitted some pretty ghastly sounds while running. Talking about guttural, wheezy, untoward sounds. I pinged Best Buy (BB) about 2 weeks after delivery to have it exchanged. Their customer service people told me it was “normal” for the fridge to make noises since it was a high efficiency-“green” refrigerator. They told me to give it a couple more weeks and the noises should subside a bit, or to let them know if it failed operationally in any way.

Couple weeks come and go, nothing changes. Call BB again. They tell me since I didn’t buy the “Geek Squad” protection package, they wouldn’t even look at it....that it was LG’s problem since now, I was past the 30 day exchange period (by 2 days), which was caused by them. Talked to my sales person, the appliance manager, the store manager...all stuck to their story. The refrigerator may be noisy, but it was operational.

I call LG. They state that the noises were normal (again, this thing sounded like a group of flatulent frat boys after a pizza and kegger party). It was loud enough to hear in the next room to cause startles. They are no help. I persist (as I do). They finally agree to send out an LG technician, who comes two weeks later, and in turn says that as long as it’s keeping my food cold and frozen food frozen, he wouldn’t know how to fix it.

Fast forward to last Thanksgiving Week. Having family and friends come over for a “pre-Thanksgiving meal on the Wednesday before. Earlier in the week, I brined the Turkey on Tuesday, I get all the sides pre-prepared, all in the fridge. Next morning, I come downstairs to the kitchen to begin to cook, and my kitchen is full of water on the floor. You guessed it, the fridge finally failed. All the frozen food was thawed. All interior foods in the fridge were cool, but not cold. In short, all ruined. I’m livid. Understand, the refrigerator was under warranty this entire time.

Good luck getting anyone to service a refrigerator Thanksgiving Week. Call LG and leave a voice mail.

The following Monday I get a call from their alleged “customer service” team, stating an LG technician was not available, but they would have one of their 3rd party service companies contact me. 2 days come and go, 3 days....now I’m living out of a styrofoam cooler and going out to eat every day. Finally, I get a call from a repair person 5 days later. Told him the model. He harrumphs and says “LG doesn’t pay me enough to work on their refrigerators (and hangs up).

Report this to LG. They say they’ll find another servicer, who calls a week later, informing me it sounded like the compressor went out (which in itself has a 10 years warranty), but those were backlogged.

Speaking of noisy LG appliances, I think I mentioned once before that my LG microwave oven (1-year old) makes terrible noise when in use. I have tried everything to get it to stop, but to no avail. I called LG customer service and they told me that particular model makes a lot of noise, but so long as it does the job, there is nothing to worry about.

If the microwave dies, I won’t buy another LG product, that’s for sure!

I would never buy a Samsung or LG refrigerator after hearing so many horror stories about them being (a) unreliable (b) noisy and (c) essentially unrepairable.

Don't know if a Whirlpool, GE or Frigidaire (which is what I have had for 10+ years) is all that much better but I'll take my chances with those.

So, now I’m without a refrigerator for a little over a month. With the prospect of LG and Best Buy playing “kick the can” with my dead $2,300 refrigerator, I have to do something. Deciding I’ll deal with LG later, I need a fridge. Go with the old “tried and true” Whirlpool brand. Now, I’ve got $4K in refrigerators, but only half of them work. The LG takes up residence in my garage until I can get things resolved.

Through several more phone calls to LG and several more missteps from either their direct service people, or authorized 3rd party sources, my refrigerator was not getting fixed.

I send letters to LG Corporate (in both Korea and their North America HQ in Huntsville, AL). Every time I get a response from their customer service team with the same tired excuses and the same unkept promises.

After months of no movement, I get the Ohio Attorney General involved. Again, the same thing happens on LG’s end.....”let’s fix it”....but they never do, for a variety of believable and unbelievable reasons. Ohio AG gives up. I go to the Attorney General of AL for their help. They contact LG on my behalf. They come back with allegedly the “Chief Richard....the Grand Poobah...the Big Cheese” of LG service and tell me to contact him with a phone number. I call him immediately. He informs me since I’ve contacted the Attorney General, they will no longer deal with me personally and that I should deal with the AG’s office.

Now, I’m beyond livid. AG’s will air my complaints, but really are toothless when it comes to getting a resolution. Let’s go to court.

Filed with my local small claims court with a hearing set up for August 4th. Have no idea who LG will send, but I’ve got all communications, dates and times, pictures of the refrigerator’s “spewage” in my kitchen, receipts, phone records....I got it all. I’m ready.

    Yesterday, I get this.....

    Good Afternoon Mr (GG)

Please be advised that I have reviewed this claim with our in-house counsel. He has authorized me to make a settlement offer to buy back the product at issue. The total offer includes a small amount of depreciation, but not much as the unit was purchased early last year. Total settlement offer is $2,241.14. Please advise if this is agreeable. Thank you.

After "service" I got with my now-gone dishwasher, I won't touch LG for at least 5 years, if not 10. It's a shame, as their stuff looks nice and has a lot of clever features, but the reliability was clearly lagging. Interestingly CR is now recommending LG refrigerators at top of its list with "good" reliability (no manufacturer has "excellent"). I find it curious. Perhaps they improved since, but just a few years ago they were clearly not doing that well. Or is it something unsavory going on there? It would be disappointing if they were able somehow to "buy it".

But what's worse, is their warranty service. It just horrendous. Story after story of backordered parts and months of waiting time, instead of days/weeks at most. Refrigerators are special, though. I can understand a little waiting time (1-2 weeks) for a microwave oven, dishwasher, or even washer/dryer, or a stove (there are some substitutes you can employ at low cost), but a refrigerator should be on a special fast track, as it's a lifeline for any household. If manufacturers don't understand it and "free market" won't force them, they perhaps should be made by regulators, similar way car manufacturers are (there are part availability mandates). I'm not big on regulation, but there are sometimes necessary steps, even if it means extra 20 or 50 bucks on the price (somebody has to pay at the end and it will be consumer).

I have a Whirlpool fridge. It works well, but it's not perfect. The door system is a disaster. It's prone to not close (lip does not tuck under another door if not pushed with some force) and the thing has no buzzer (the fridge is a dutch door "gold" line, not exactly cheap stuff, yet still no buzzer). This means I find the door not sealed after a few hours more often than I care to admit. The deicing discharge system had a flaw - poor quality gromet made of rubber that gets old quickly and stops the discharge flow. This cause ice buildup at the bottom of the freezer. They redesigned it and would even provide a free/discounted replacement parts, but it was easier just to buy them on Amazon, they were 20 bucks or so. They posted clear replacement instructions on Youtube, so I did it myself. No problems since.

LOL through tears. I was fortunate. I got Costco leaning on LG and they gave me money back for my dishwasher (I was inside of LG warranty, but outside of Costco's 90-day return period). All they wanted was a little sticker and signed letter indemnifying them from further liability. I disposed of it when I bought my new Bosch. It's a shame Costco pushes Samsung and LG so hard (best deals) and doesn't sell Bosch. Even with their support it's just too much hassle for me.

My guess is most of the fridges are fine. But the small (relatively) number of early failures (defect in manufacturing?) are painful. Sucks when it happens, but majority of owners never experience it. I can say, functionally they are really nice! I have had mine for a while. Thinking might be at about 3 years now? I’ll ride it out and hope, but I bought from local store that is also the service center, which should help if something bad happens.

Here is my theory, and I came up with it after some stories about an airline who left people stranded on a trip from Toronto to Las Vegas...had to take the plane out of service because of a servicing issue....and people were left for 3 days before the airline could get another flight for them. Why wouldn't they get them seats on another plane?

GG’s fridge experience is why for the last 30 years I have bought appliances exclusively from a mom and pop store here in my town. When I need something, I look it up on the Best Buy and Nebraska Furniture Mart websites and get the prices of models I am interested in (no LG or Samsung). Then I go to the mom and pop and they verify the price and match it. They usually have to order the item, but it’s seldom more than a week before delivery. If I have any service needs, they have their own techs that come out no later than the next day. I don’t think the big box stores have any interest in you after they have your money, whereas this place has the same people working there as 10-15 years ago.

Try to find indy stores in your area and support them if you can. Heck, I would pay 10% more just for the great service.

I used local chain Famous Tate. They know what they're doing. They are part of Brand Source, which seems to be something like a wholesale alliance, which gives them similar purchasing power to big box retailers. That's probably how many mom and pop stores can match those prices.

We had our internal blower fan/circuit board fail on the 3-year old Whirlpool last year. Seems there
were lots of that circuit control failing for Whirlpool because they were having a back order on getting them from China or wherever. It's a supplier problem from what I could tell.

I'd buy another Whirlpool if this one failed tomorrow. First I do have a regional repair service that will get to it quickly for warranty work under Lowe's warranty or service outside of warranty. But a major failure.. I'd replace. Just like GG replaced his LG with another product.

Mine is quiet as a church mouse except for the ice maker when the ice is less than 1/3 of the bucket. The sound of the 8-10 cubes falling and hitting the bucket is noticeable. But we got used to it after we figured out to just keep the ice bucket full which softens the impact. The ice maker is all on this door unlike some brands where it's actually in the freezer and the ice falls into the door. That leaves more room in the freezer that's usable.

No fun Mike, we are all hoping for good results.

Wishing you good luck with your 'inspection' tomorrow.

Now they want me there by 7:15 AM. They told me to bring a sweatshirt since I will be in a dark room in a recliner for 60-90 minutes after they inject the isotope and they keep the rooms very cold due to all the CAT Scan equipment. That means I have to get up at 5;00 AM. Good grief!

I might be weird, but when I was having PET scans, I kinda found the barium shakes to be tasty.

Don't want to use that fallback, my dining room table isn't big enough. Maybe I should expand the leafs "just in case". :p

Now that's weird. I remember drinking two IIRC. I had an isotope scan earlier and then injection of the isotope and waited 2 hours and then another radioactivity scan. Then it was off to drink the shakes and the scan for them. Awful when I tried to get those down. But worse was drinking all the liquid for this last colonoscopy. Every half hour or whatever. When I got home that evening, I was worn out.

@abacomike I hope everything goes well, but even more I hope the results are negative.
I think waiting for the results, days sometimes, is the hard part.

Well, that depends on whether you have straight away speed or speed in the turns. When Mrs. j started gaining on me on the straight aways I took the leafs out of the table because I figured I could get away from her in the turns and I was right. Which got me to thinking that if we had a round table I could lap her but I'm not really sure I should do that. :o

It’s possible that they will have me ingest barium, but all I remember from last year was the needle sticking to find a vein. They inject an isotope of radioactive iodine into my bloodstream which takes 60-90 minutes to be absorbed by my organs.

I have a PET-Scan done every 12 months and an ultrasound of my liver done every 6 months. My oncologist is the one who orders it and my primary care physician gets it approved.

I really don’t like the test because they make me drink 2-gallons of water over 12 hours once the test is completed in order for my kidneys to filter out the iodine isotope from my body.

    GG: Good Afternoon Mr (GG)

Please be advised that I have reviewed this claim with our in-house counsel. He has authorized me to make a settlement offer to buy back the product at issue. The total offer includes a small amount of depreciation, but not much as the unit was purchased early last year. Total settlement offer is $2,241.14. Please advise if this is agreeable. Thank you.

Way to go GG! I love it....the last thing these guys want is to go to small claims court where they won't stand a chance and they will look like complete morons for their ineptitude.

I figure, they have concluded if all the companies treat you badly you won't have any alternative anyway. We gain as many customers as we lose with our poor service. Not worth working hard to solve a customers problem, that costs money. Let's keep our profits as high as possible, so we can all keep our jobs for another quarter.

Thanks! Couldn’t agree more. I’m keeping the court date until, if/when I see the money on my account.

I think it takes nerve to deduct depreciation. @graphicguy should be paid something for the inconvenience and for having to shop for another refrigerator when theirs wasn't up to the job.

@imidazol97 ....I hear you. I thought about that. I guess if I end up in small claims court, I could probably make that case. However, I did not want to get into a protracted (even more protracted) fight with LG for what many only end up to be a few dollars. I do agree it was rather “ball$y” of them to deduct a few dollars for depreciation, though.

That just shows what LG thinks about their customers, though.
