That makes sense though. Active-AWD uses just an electromagnetic clutch to transfer torque to the rear wheels. Pull the power and it's FWD only.

Somehow I feel cheated now, like I'm driving a glorified FWD car.

not to make things worse, but in that default 90/10 the "10%" is just drag through the clutch pack. active AWD really is FWD most of the time.

Sorry, Ed! I didn't mean to use the word "just" to talk down on Active AWD! I was trying to illustrate that it uses the clutch pack and nothing else to make AWD happen.

If it makes you feel any better, I bet the clutch pack on your XT is bigger than the one in my GT. ;-)

50/50 default split, nothing magic ;-)

the active AWD does react faster, though. it takes a fair bit of slippage to get the viscous coupler to work its magic, while the active AWD fires up those back tires something close to instantly.

Yours is bigger than mine? Aren't you supposed to say it the other way around? :o)

just read your town hall test drive of the bmw ultimate drive. what was the 'best performace' award criteria? you must have had the best lap times (my guess).

legacy ride and drive is coming up soon for us, August 28th in Chicago.

finally saw an '05 Outback XT today in red on the road. Seems to blend in with the other cars it was driving with in that color. Still looked sharp though!

I was gonna do a mock press release but you beat me to the news. I'm sure I grunted at some point. ;-)

Not the quickest lap, at least I don't think so. They may have been looking for the smoothest drive, or the quickest learning student? Not sure exactly what the criteria was.

Had to represent the Crew (and Edmunds), right? :-)

I did ask a lot of questions to the pro driver, and got progressively quicker with each lap, applying the useful feedback he was giving me. That may have done it.

Well, I couldn't reply to the 'test drive' thread, so I had to reply here. Sorry I broke the scoop on the news ;-)

interesting Sunday ... I piled the whole crew into the Lincoln (2 grown daughters, 1 son-in-law, and 2 grandsons) and we went to catch the South Shore train to go to Chicago ... I've never done that before and figured with all the road construction we encountered last week going to the airport that it would be the sensible thing to do .... we bought round trip tickets ($9 each way for the 4 adults and kids rode free) ... sat down to wait .. about 10 minutes before departure a sign appeared in the ticket window "South Shore service suspended until further notice" ...

hmmmm ... well .. we had plans to meet the ex's sister in Chicago for brunch and SHE was bringing her daughter and granddaughter who were visiting from Cooperstown ... we got a quick refund on the tickets and jumped in the car for a trip through the construction ....

we had a great time at Milleneum Park and at Navy Pier .. first visit for any of MY bunch ...

how is this Subaru related? .... I'm not used to driving the 'land yacht' ... I MISSED MY OUTBACK WHEN IT WAS TIME TO MANEUVER IN CHICAGO TRAFFIC OR PARK IT ... but we would NOT have all fit in the car ...

    lol
    see ya!

Brenda: tie them down to the roof rack! ;-)

    That's cool, Papa Bear.

Did some more towing this weekend. On the way back from that event I went to Bob's and borrowed his trailer, then hauled 2 yards of wood chips home. They were generous so the trailer was nearly full (5'x8'x30" deep IIRC).

Put it this way, the trailer is almost big enough to haul Brenda's engagement ring!

Sandy had no problem hauling it home, in fact at times like this I'm glad she's not brand new and takes a beating without any complaint.

I took my kids when we went back to drop it off, and they had a ball over at Bob's with all the animals. The mandatory dog, of course, plus a cat, and then a whole slew of...toads!

We took them home and put them in a tank we had, it already had one toad. Now there are 16!

My daughter named her first toad "Chico" and the other 15 are named "Dave". ;-)

how did Lana react when you brought home all the toads? Is this the last time she lets you bring the kids to my place, not knowing what you're liable to bring home? :)

BTW, there are still a few toads left in that basement window well!

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I have no idea how my wife is doing...I slept in the shed with the dog. ;-)

Just kidding. She actually laughed and was OK with it. The tank is outside and we don't let the kids touch the toads so they don't get any bacteria on their hands.

I washed my hands after handling them. And now we have a place to put whatever we kill with the fly swatter.

the other 15 are named "Dave"

    bwahaha.

I can't tell them apart so it's easier that way.

Chico is gray, though, so I can single him out. The rest are tan/brown.

What else besides bugs can I feed a toad? Do they eat worms? There are lots and I don't want to starve them.

We have an armadillo lizard and he eats crickets and maggots. You can get feeder crickets (the small kind would be best for toads I would think) at the pet store. For maggots, just leave a raw hamburger out on the doorstep for a few days.

    Eww.

i think it's just toadly awesome...

Maggots...then the wife would really kill me.

I've been able to find crickets, plenty of them, so that and flies have been their diet so far.

Wonder what I'll do in the winter, when it gets really cold. Any suggestions?

Guess I'll tackle that problem when it arrives.

Woner what he'll do in the winter, when it gets really toad.
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
I think it's time to change the name of your Legacy or Forester, juice. Instead of Lucky or Sandy, how about Kermit? ;-)

You should be able to find some good frog care books at the library. I wouldn't worry about touching the frogs too much, even for the kids. Just have them wash their hands afterwards, shouldn't be a big deal.

    Dare we ask for pictures?

don't put the toads too close to the bird cage ...

<skip the next if you have no stomach for more puns>

    don't want them to get pigeon-toad ...
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
next time you're out here we'll have to go to my next door neighbor's house. I was just over there, and not only did he have toads in his basement window wells, but salamanders too! He had about 3 or 4 in there.

Lana will likely forbid you to come by any more if you bring any of those home:)

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I guess you could say I towed, then I toad. ;-)

I'll try to get some pics up.

We caught a toad a couple of years ago and took photos, but I didn't let her keep it because she was too young to care for it.

Back on topic, Kangaroos are faster than toads because they jump using all four limbs, hence the All Limb Jump (ALJ). Toads and frogs only use their rear legs, RLJ, and are therefore relatively slow and defenseless against predators like snakes.

Talk about cool animals, I definitely would have picked up a couple of those.

Don't know why but I was always fascinated by those ever since I was a kid.

so he should get 2 ...
    no problem naming them ...

    sal .. and amanda ....

then we could get into the whole 'toad and eye of newt' thing as well ...

or if you do crosswords ...

the salamanders are what he eft behind ....

perform valuable service in preying on mosquito larvae

    prey on slugs

skin toxins can cause discomfort to human mucous membranes

OK so no touching, but they can help control mosquitoes and slugs.

Diet consists of insects, worms and molluscs

I can get plenty of worms. I'm sure my wife will be just thrilled now. ;-)

This link was even more useful:

    http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/content/dep/greenman/toads.pdf

Ironically I found it via Google, and wouldn't you know, that's the state and county where I live!

Now to find some old clay pots. I don't think they'll survive for long in the tank, doubt there are 10,000 pest insects per toad in there for their summer diet!

good trip to Inner Harbor in Baltimore (business without much pleasure) and my computer is back working. So, in the interest of time, could y'all point me to any "hot topics" that I may have missed? I hope you all are doing well and it's all good news!

None that I can think of (other than the spy shots of the new 7-passenger crossover in the Future Models thread). When was the last time you checked the "Suggestions for Subaru" thread?

Hi Patti. A toasty topic over at the 2005 legacy/OB thread was the IIHS crash test results. People were very disappointed. I think it has died down, though.

I don't know if Juice's toads are a 'hot topic', but they make for some 'pun' reading ;-)!

What is it with amphibians? You are discriminating against invertebrates! We need to discuss trilobites like, Elrathia, Bumastus, Isotelus, and Phacops!

Of the books read to me by my father when i was young, The Hobbit and Wind in The Willows were my favorites. Much better than having My Pet Goat read aloud.

    Hey all,

Our two week driving vacation was cut short by sudden company travel. I am in Eindhoven, The Netherlands this morning. More when I get some time to catch up on hundreds of Subaru Crew posts, I'll fill you in on the Honda tranny experience and our trip, and life in Europe.
