    Congrats juice and Bob.

If Mrs. juice (or his other boss) won't let him go, I'll go in his place. :-)

Today's e-mail from SOA was a complete surprise. Juice and I were hoping to go again, but last month we got the news that SOA had decided, for whatever reasons, not to invite guests this year. It looks like they've had last minute second thoughts. It's a smaller group this year though, about half the amount that went last year have been invited.

While juice and I have made some good contacts within SOA during our last two trips, I really have to thank Patti again for this, even though she's been assigned to the dungeon. I know she pushed for this to happen. I sure hope we get her back—and soon.

well they're launching a totally different type of car, so I can sort-of imagine why not as many of the 'old guard' were invited.

still it's silly not to have some consumer champions... err, advocates, there. :)

    have fun guys!

Well, I think you know where I stand on the styling, and juice is certainly interested as a possible next car purchase for his growing family.

Yeah, I think SOA is going to need all the help they can get to pull this off, which is probably why the offer came. This is going to be a monumental sales job, especially after reading all the posts here and elsewhere.

I think we can all agree that it's in the best interests of SOA (and us) that this vehicle succeed in the marketplace. If it doesn't, that could mean problems for Subaru, which could mean problems for Subie fans down the road. If it fails that could impact on future Imprezas, etc., as there would likely be less funds available to develop future models.

interestingly, subaru has proven in the recent past that they will listen to styling criticism.

the 2002 Impreza received heavy criticism overseas, and a bit over here too though much less due to "finally" getting a turbocharged variant, and what do you know, two model years later the headlights and grille are revised.

that type of makeover would help the TriAzteca a lot, although the rear would still be awkward. odd rear ends are definitely a Subaru tradition though. hehe

Yeah, I can't wait to see the face-lifted version in a couple of years. Hopefully it'll look better. Maybe it's just one of those "it looks better in person".

    Have fun Bob & juice.

Sorry to hear about the loss. It's bad at any time and even worse around holidays.

My grandfather (Dad's father) was hit by a car and killed on Christmas Eve 1978 while crossing the road in front of the church. My mom was about to cross behind him but luckily she saw the pickup truck coming. Unfortunately my grandfather didn't.

I really didn't think we would go. Even then - I thought it would overlap with my trip to Brazil, and I was already thinking about who to suggest they invite in my place. That would have been a tough decision!

But...I noticed there were fewer people on the guest list this year, just 4 were invited. If that's right then we must've represented the Crew quite well, as we *both* got invited back.

B9 Tribeca does indeed interest me personally, so maybe that helped, too.

Off to the B9X topic to see about these pics, I actually have not seen them yet!

wow, I know it's possible someone else has thought of it too but I'm surprised how much a silly word I blurted out the other day has taken off.

    it is fitting, unfortunately. :(

Ya think? I just looked and the profile looks pretty darn sharp to me. Reminds you of a Mazda3 5 door (class-leading design) on steroids.

Toss in a mesh grille (STi edition?) and I'm all over it.

  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
did you mean side profile? that is tolerable, maybe even attractive. the rear is awkward but nothing out of the ordinary there for Subaru. :) the front.. oh my. wow.

and that's not a good 'wow'.

Just got my new issue. Front cover headline:

    "BUSTED! Saab B9X!"

@#&*! do they just completely hate Subaru? Is that why there was never any mention of the USA ProRally deaths ever in the Competition pages? Is that why they've never road tested a new GT? Is that why they wish the base Outback had "the 2.0 turbo from the WRX" when we all know you can buy the dolfanged thing with a 2.5 turbo?

Or are they just turning into one of the most brain dead car rags, after having once been one of the cleverest?

Yes Colin, I like the side profile shots the best. They managed to get a Mazda3-ish sporting stance with a sprinkle of BMW flavor, IMHO.

Actually the vehicle is resembles most overall is the Maserati Kubang concept, remember that? I called that the best looking SUV ever way back when.

Let's see how the details are sorted out, give is a mesh grille and limit the chrome and I think it'll be a winner.

If anybody is interested, while I was down at my daughter's in Tenn. I was in Walmart and wandered through their electronics dept.

I noticed that they had a 3 disc in dash CD and MP3 player single din mounting. It was made by Kawasaki. This is the first multi disc aftermarket unit that I have seen and most defintely the first multi disc MP3 player.

Will it plug-n-play in my Miata? Harness and all?

My CD skips, pretty badly. Though I also need new shocks.

I assume that there must be some sort of a fitness standard for your profession.

The reason I mention this, while I was at my daughter's place in Tenn. they took us to lunch at a Chinese buffet, there were these two EMS guys sitting with massive plates of stuff, their rig was parked outside,so I assume they were on a lunch break.

Both of these dudes were so badly overweight they could just waddle literally instead of walk, I kid you not, I left there thinking that if I had a medical emergency I wouldn't fancy having either of these guys as the attendants.

      Cheers Pat.

Although I took delivery of my 2.5 limited wagon Friday, not closing the deal until tomorrow. Having some second thoughts on whether or not I should have gotten the turbo or the six. Think I solved the problem of low armrest by putting driver seat on lowest possible setting but still not sure if I will be comfortable on long trips (and, I take a lot of them) Also, if I have read correctly, the seats are a little different on the better models? Any input out there from those on this board about if the seats are a little different (better) on the Bean or 6 cylinder models? Also, any input on gas mileage. I have read that premium is certainly required for the turbo, but "recommended" for the 6? Any and all comments tonight would be appreciated. Still may be time for me to make a change tomorrow morning. Also I guess price would be around $4000 more? My 22.5 limited listed for close to 29 & I got for 26. Seems like these other models are 4k or so more.
  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
You're right-on with the prices -- my XT stickered for about $33K (5EAT) and I paid about $30K. The LL Bean H6 model is in the same range as my XT, give or take a few hundred dollars at most.

If gas mileage/cost is important to you, stick with the 2.5i model. I have been getting 19-25 with my XT. Combined with the need for premium fuel it means this is a much more expensive car to operate. I forget what the ratings are for the 2.5i, but based on my older (2000) Outback with a similar motor, I'd say 24-30 is realistic.

Though my 02 Outback H6 got decent mileage (22-28) the new H6 models have dropped quite a bit (maybe only slightly better than my XT, if at all). That's the price to pay for 250HP! I would definitely recommend premium for the H6 -- I could tell the difference in my 02 when regular gas was used, and it was felt throughout the powerband (because the engine retards timing).

Main benefit to the H6 is refinement and very composed power delivery. Main benefit to the turbo motor is that it's a total rocket and very fun to drive. If you're cruising down the highway at 65mph, they will *all* feel about the same in my opinion -- the 05 model is very quiet and smooth to begin with, and distinctions between models/engines in terms of noise, vibration, and harshness are small or negligible. In fact, the 2.5i models actually ride a smidge better becaus they have higher profile tires on 16" wheels.

Can't really say which seats are better or worse. I do like the seats in my XT, but had no complaints about the seats in the 2.5i I drove either.

By the way, I am 6'2" and about 225LB. I also have my seat set to the lowest position and the stock armrest is about perfect for me.

Overall, I would pick the 2.5i model for value. I would pick the XT model for a mid-life-crisis and/or having fun and not caring about the gas bill (like me), and I would pick the H6 if I really wanted to feel like I was driving luxury car every day.

BTW, you never told us why you were ditching the MAXX... maybe that would influence my advice.

    Good luck!

    Craig
  • occkingoccking Member Posts: 346
I loved the MAXX for the 8 months I had it. Put on 24k. Great acceleration, great gas mileage (averaged around 26.5 for all the driving I did) even got over 30 on a few occasions. Never less than 22. But, it was absolutely horrible in the snow. As you can see, I travel a lot. Up to Montreal at least once a month and a lot of travel up to Northern New England and New Brunswick as well as out into Western NY. In the past have had nice AWD vehicles, Accura MDX and Lexus RX300 to name a few, so perhaps have been spoiled by those kinds of vehicles. One reason I chose the 2.5 was that I wanted to continue to get decent gas mileage and I would expect to get at least mid 20's with all the highway driving I do. It was probably a good idea that I didn't drive either the turbo or the 6 cylinder because I would have probably liked either one quite a bit. As long as I don't know for sure how they drive I won't miss it either! I will probably stick with what I have.
  • hondafriekhondafriek Member Posts: 2,984
Unless you want a road rocket like the turbo GT the 2.5 is perfectly adequate.Whilst the 2.5 is not eyeball searing fast, neither is it a slug like a lot would have you believe.

I have a 2001 GT wagon and I love this car as much today as I did the day I brought it home.

In fact I have looked at the new legacys and while they are no doubt nice cars they are still not enticing enough for me to change my GT.Also my car has extremely low milage and is mint so neither would it make any sense for me to take the hit I would with depreciation.

      Cheers Pat.
