you can use the install cd, but typically there is a setup page that you can manage your router with like http://192.168.1.1 - make sure to change the password (usually 'admin' for linksys systems). In the wireless settings page, you should see the option to not broadcast the SSID.

Linksys also has a log viewer (need to turn logging on first) which helps track incoming and outgoing connections to the router. IIRC, it's in a different folder on the setup cd.

We got 57" in the WV mountains last week and I skied on it over the weekend. Talk about awesome! On the ride up Friday night, it was snowing like a blizzard and the roads were really bad. Of course, the Outback trucked through like a champ. When we got to the ski condo, the parking lot was unplowed with about 20" on the ground. No problems getting through that either, though the RE-92 were definitley not gripping so well in the deep stuff. It's been a great March for skiing in the mid-Atlantic, and I think we'll see a couple more dumps to come.

Thanks, Brian. After I posted my question, I set to work to find the answer. I tried the setup cd, but it stalled early on for reasons unknown. Went to the 80+ page help .pdf and found the basics of what the screens should look like. Went to the web site (support page), typed in ssid, clicked on the link (same as you put up), entered my p.w., and was off and running.

Now my laptop sees an encripted 'g' transmission with a hex MAC address that matches, but not the SSID.
Hey, with a little more experience, I too can be a network administrator! Gee, in my little fifedom, I guess I am one...
    Thanks again!

Yeah, I have Netstumbler on my laptop, but rarely use it. I also have a Kensington WiFi Finder Plus that finds hotspots and Bluetooth access points for those times you don't want to boot the laptop. I rarely lug the thing out of the house though.

    Snow huh? sigh....

Well, no snow, but lots of cold. High of 54 yesterday, and it's 16 right now! Wind chill of 0. Spring's coming when???

But doesn't look like it'll accumulate. Still beautiful view, though. From my window I can see the airplanes approaching the airport in DC.

Not sure if I set that up, I just have the laptop "Automatically assign" my connection, as well as my PocketPC. Am I missing something?

IF the hacker or piggy-backer doesn't know the keys, they're not supposed to be able to access the internet or connect, right?

I can give you more info when I get home tonight... (don't remember everything now).
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
In your wireless router setup, there should be a "MAC Address Filter" function, or similar, where you input the MAC of all your devices.

A hacker usually have nothing to do other than hack.
Using the MAC filter, the device address has to match that in the router first before it even starts to accept key authentications.

so far rain at the NH Seacoast, although we are expecting 5-10 inland for the ride home. Woo-hoo! More snow predicted for Friday, and possibly Sunday. I have certainly gotten my moneys worth out of my Subies this winter. Rob M.

It's already snowing here in NYC.

    Doesn't look like it'll stick.

Snowing hard in SE PA and it looks like it's sticking.

It's snowing like a blizzard here in tidewater VA and sticking just from the sheer volume of stuff coming down. Had some lightning and thunder too, so the temps must be plummeting. And I'm at work only a mile from the bay so it's warmer here. I bet it's really sticking inland near my house. Should be a fun ride home.

and in the 60s here in Seattle. What gives? I guess there must be something to this global warming. California got all our rain! ;-)

  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Yeah, think of the MAC as the physical ID of the device you're connecting to the network. It's a fixed number(and letters) that no other network card has. Basically, you tell your wireless router to only hand out connections to those on your list, so to speak. Now, they could spoof the MAC address, but having to crack that AND a key authentication AND a hidden SSID would typically deter your common hacker.

Well Thank goodness we did not get all the snow they predicted, still enough at 15 centimetres we also got some of the nasty freezing rain but again we were spared the worst of it.

Roll on spring enough is enough.

    Cheers Pat.
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Exactly. Any determined hacker can get into a wireless network regardless of the commonly used security settings. The idea is to use things like MAC address filtering, disabling SSIC broadcast, changing passwords and using the highest level of encryption possible to not become low-hanging fruit.

Rain in California? Not this week!

It's been sunny and in the mid-70's all week! The weather report is calling for some 80's by midweek in some parts of the Bay Area.

I was out in shorts washing my car this weekend.

    Gotta love the Golden State!

    Ken
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
Sorry to rain on your sunshine Ken, but I left the Golden state and don't plan on returning! ;-P!

    tom

PS: I do miss the bay area sometimes though. But Northern California is a different state. ;-)
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
"But Northern California is a different state"

How true. As an East Coast native, I thought California was just California. After having lived here for several years, it's amazing to see the differences between NoCal and SoCal.

It has been raining since last night, and the temps dropped below freezing at about 9am this morning as the front came thru. Strong winds, heavy icing, drifting snow and low enough temps that salt isn't working well. Bottom line? I had a blast driving home!!! First I did the obligatory fast figure eights around the empty part of the company lot, then out onto the roads!

Only downside? I threw a CEL after a fast throttle transition getting onto the Taconic Pkwy. It seemed to handle it well, and runs fine, so I might just ride it out. What, 40 starts or so till it goes away?

Maybe a quick misfire that triggerred the CEL? Autozone nearby or someone with a code reader? If you were near SE Wisconsin you could stop by and I'd hook up the obd-2 software and pull the code for you.

Several on/off cycles AND the condition that triggerred the CEL not happening - only then will the CEL go off (of course only if no other conditions exist to trigger the CEL). Pulling the battery cable for a bit will clear the CEL - again only if the condition is not present when it checks again.

    Swampy, Brian,

Yep, I figured that quick cycling on and off the pedal while correcting oversteer probably caused it. I am reluctant to clear it by pulling the negative as I have no reason to want to clear the ECU - the car runs great and I don't want to mess with a good thing.

Well, I have always wanted to buy an OBDII reader, maybe this is the excuse I needed?

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
A while back AutoZone had one on sale for $100, I should have picked one up.

Of course I wouldn't have used it yet, but it's the type of thing that is handy to have.

Just wanted to thank you guys. Seems like the router configs are set to deter any potential hackers and freeloaders ;-)

for us to get most of our snow for the year!

We were predicted to have some flurries and 'light' snow today ... it's been snowing all day, and the roads are a mess although it's not all that deep ... someone lost control coming around a corner and almost creamed me on the way home ... (notice that luckily I said ALMOST)

I can Identify with that Brenda, our chief weather service Enviroment Canada consistently gets it wrong.
Just last week they were saying that because we have had a lower than normal snowfall, people along the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers would not have to worry about the rivers overflowing this year causing flooding, hasn't quit snowing hardly since.

They also said that last winter and this winter would be warmer than normal HAH! This is the coldest winter I remember since coming to Canada 31 years ago.

What's about the only job where you can be consistently wrong and not get fired? (Meteoroligist)

    Cheers Pat.

    G'day

Its actually fairly interesting to llok at weather forecast accuracy. If they are getting it right (say maximum temp within 3C or 5F) more than 50% of the time, they are doing fairly well. It is a lot easier to be accurate if you have a lagre land mass to the west of you as that mans that you have many ground based monitoring devices bewteeen you and the previaling weather. Thus, in Australia, our East Coast forecasts are pretty good. A Toronto based guy formerly from melbourne compares the accuracy of teh temperature forecasts for melbourne rgularly http://www.cita.utoronto.ca/~rjh/melbourne/melb-weather-l.html

More cheerfully he compares Melbourne v canada
    http://www.cita.utoronto.ca/~rjh/meta/

I am pleased to note that today, on average we are about 25C warmer than montreal. Personally, I would rather have my toes in the pool than an ice bucket.

    Cheers

juice, sorry I had to exit the chat when I was answering your question about Rita's little car.

To recap, there are no dents but scratched right down to the tin on the passenger door and quarter panel. So both those panels will have to be repainted, I got an estimate from a body shop I trust in the amount of $800, this is not bad considering they have to repair and paint 2 panels.

This includes removing and reinstalling all
mouldings, door handle, and lock cylinder no taping these things off which is the proper way to repaint. Still I would have been happier if it had not happened my comprehensive deductible is 300 bucks out of my pocket.

    Cheers Pat.

I learned a lot of interesting stuff about how the OBDII system works, plus what you can expect from your scanner purchase. I posted a report over in "Problems and Solutions, Post 4873". Thought that would be the more appropriate place...

Sorry, I tried to add a direct link, but apparently I don't know how!

... it's snowing again? Storm #22 for the winter season is expected to put down another 6-12 inches of snow.

I don't have to tell you guys how much I love my Outback. I was running errands this morning. The snow was very wet, and quickly packed to ice with the traffic. The police wanted to close a major road where nobody could negotiate a rather significant hill. I was able to convince the officer to let me have a go at it. I can imagine everyone was surprised as I went up the hill and off to tax-free NH to do some shopping. Rob M.

The local resort closes tomorrow; earliest closing in its 60+ years.

    Speaking of dumps:

Subaru May Dump Lance Armstrong (Inside Line)

Wow... that seems like a really dumb move. Lance has a very positive image and good name recognition with consumers. Plus I'd imagine that Subaru would have to buy out the remainder of his contract which will cost them several million.

Too bad, Steve. This year the primo skiing in NE will be in the spring. I am planning to pound some slush over Easter weekend. Rob M.

Maybe they can swap Lance for Bode Miller. More Subarus in NH than TX per capita, right?

Plus he's had time behind the wheel:

OK, today I am feeling really feeble-minded, so this is just a 'vent' post ...

I have all this 'work' to do for classes I'm taking and also for the job. So far I've spent an inordinate amount of time trying to find what seems to be a problem in the daughter's income tax forms, trying to locate a very important document that isn't where I have kept it for years, and trying to locate an envelope of papers that I knew where it was just a couple of weeks ago ....
so as you might imagine .. I haven't gotten a lot 'done' ....

  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
OOOH I hate that. I am very bad at forgetting where I put something 5 minutes ago. Grown up attention deficit child! It gets to be a very annoying flaw at tax time. "I just had that T3 form in my hand...."

Wow Brenda. So tense, especially for a mid-westerner!

What you need is a bottle of wine and a bubble bath to help you forget your problems. Maybe a long ride in your Subaru.

Today, I went sliding in the snow with my 9 year old. Helps to keep it all in perspective. Rob.

Sorry to hear your local hill is closing so early this year Steve. I know it's been lousy up there. After an iffy Jan/Feb in the Appalachians, I am determined to cram a lot of my ski season into March. I'll be lucky to ski 10 days this season. Hope to hit Snowshoe WV later this week.
