Not a good way to start the summer season swampy. Hope you're okay, and glad to hear it wasn't any worse than it was.

(marathon runners, long distance bikers, etc.) on this board grew this weekend.

On Saturday I took my kids to a local bike shop and helped out the area's economy. We left with a 24" Giant 21spd hybrid bike for Emily, and a Burley Bee trailer for Annie. At 9 years old, Emily was hitting her knees on the handlebars of her 5spd 20" bike (the kid has incredibly long legs), so a new bike was a must. The trailer is quite neat - folds flat, including removable wheel, and attaches to the frame of my Trek right before the rear wheel. The multi-pivot joint allows full freedom of movement when I ride.

On Sunday, we loaded up the OBW (trailer inside), bikes on the hitch carrier, and headed for the Harlem Valley Rail Trail in Northeastern Dutchess County. We did about 5.25 miles when I deciced it was time to head back (10.5 miles total). It is a hilly area, but rail lines typically do not exceed 4% grades. The outbound ride was overall down hill, the way back up hill. Temps were upper 70's.

No, for you hardcore bikers, this would be a walk in the park. For those of us rediscovering pedal power, it was a great challenge, that left me and my two kids smiling from ear to ear. We did the ride with another family (also with two kids from China), ended the day with dinner at the Millerton Diner, and then roadside ice cream. We all slept well....

Ken: I'll ask if we can keep one for an extended test.

Acceleration test with weight, got it, swampy.

Glad you were OK, do you sail alone? That could have been a lot worse.

Drove an ML350 at the Benz Road Rally event and can honestly say I'd pick the Tribeca over that, it handles better and feel quicker, for less $, with more room to boot.

They had one at the dealer when I picked up my LGT last Monday. Not too keen on the outside, but starting to like the interior. In comparison, I still think the Outback is better looking. Rob M.

yes it is individual racing and thank god i got tied up in the ropes or i think i might have been a floater as i suck at sailing and am usually behind everyone ( which i was again ).

today i just ache from all the bumps ( head, knee and forearms ) and bruises ( too numerous ).

we get to do it all over again today but this time wearing a bike helmet and vest, aint that a site ( making sure juice is not around to take my pic lol ).

some of the racers came to my aid and to check on me. they were seeing if i knew were i was and so forth. one of the guys knows i love my fxt and testing me to see if i had my senses asked which one is faster fxt or 350 lol :P

I think that bump to your head has affected you- your posts are so long! ;)

Glad you're ok. Just take it easy for a month.

I'd be interested too in how much power it really has. Does the engine seem strained by the weight. I suppose 250hp is adequate, but much more than adequate is what I'm really looking for. ;)

This past Friday my wife and I were driving up to her sister in Utica,NY. Along the way there were scattered showers. At one point we are pulling into a rest area when my wife says "Isn't that pretty?" Now I'm driving so I'm only looking straight ahead- I notice a new OB Wagon in Champagne coloring. Naturally, I said I thouhgt the OB looked nice. That's when I get yelled at: she was talking about the double rainbow in the sky ahead of us  . Here I thought she was finally getting my love of Subarus, when she was only admiring Mother Nature.
Obviously the rest of the drive was a little quiter for a little while :) .

    Mark

P.S. Eventually she did agree the new OB looks nicer than our 2000 OB.

I think my wife might have spotted the OB first instead of the rainbow. :)

I posted about my FXT not starting in Care & Maint. Anyone let me know if you have ideas.

While walking outside today to get my lunch, I heard faint grunting sounds. They were often accompanied by screeching tires.

I went back to my desk, ate my lunch, and tried to put it out of my mind.

No such luck, I couldn't let it go. Grunt, grunt, screeeeeeeech. Grunt, grunt, screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeech. Over and over. So, I left work around 3:15 and followed the sounds.

I arrived at the scene but the sounds were no longer present. I get closer to the suspected source and low and behold, I see Patti leaving in a Tribeca. :) She waved but kept on driving. :( I then looked to my right and I see a sad, neglected, lonely green Forester. Just as I pulled in a parking spot I see the guy and his accomplice that were cheating on poor old Sandy.

Alas, I found the source of the grunts. :P

We talked a little and then they asked if I would point them home. :surprise:

I guided them as far as I could then left Sandy to defend for herself on the long congested highway home. Hopefully they're not still looking for I-95. :confuse:

Juice and Bob, it was nice meeting you for a brief moment this afternoon. Glad to hear you enjoyed the Tribeca (and F...) Ride & Drive event and hope you had a pleasant drive home.

Same here Dave. It was good to see you again—even if it was only for 10 minutes or so!

Juice and I will be commenting on the event over in the Tribeca thread. One nice surprise, besides the B9 Tribeca, we got to drive the new '06 Forester too!

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
As your fearless leaders, we decided it was essential to also test the 06 Forester, so we hopped on The Fence, yes, that famous one, to check out the latest Forester as well as the 'beca. We would not be denied. ;)

Fun event, nice to see Dave M. inbetween grunts. Traffic was busy but we made it OK and Sandy happily returned 28 mpg without complaint.

Nothing at the event made me like the Tribeca any less, in fact I'd have to downgrade some of the competitors they had along for comparison instead, particularly one ill-handling Murano that got up on 3 tires during the avoidance manuever, it was wild!

Well, this tonsillectomy has been an experience but I'm coming around to feeling much better. I'm able to eat some solid food but soft. It's been a journey, I've lost some significant weight due to my loss of appetite (and pain of course). But I'm able to breathe better and sit for long periods of time without getting light headed.

Though I can't talk for a long period of time before my throat sends the red alert. Well, it's good to know that you guys are enjoying yourselves and good to get feedback about the B9. Now if we can only get the B9 before moving in 2 weeks... sheesh.

... and for our next song, I would like to dedicate "all by myself" for a man named juice who sits alone on his fence, waiting for the right vehicle to come along .....

Juice, do you plan to publish a write up on the Forester 2006?
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Kate, there really isn't too much to say. We went on perhaps a 8 mile ride through Valley Forge National Park. That means speed in the 25 – 35 mph range. We each got maybe 4 miles or so of seat time. Juice was able to get it up to (sort of) highway speeds, as his drive included more open roads than my portion.

I can say this: We drove an X with the Premium Package, and it was an automatic. This is very similar to last year's XS model. It had a moonroof and cloth seats. Actually, it's almost exactly like our '01 Forester S Premium Package, in terms of content.

I found it to be a bit more eager than our '01 model. You can feel the extra horsepower (173 vs. 165). It also seemed a bit more refined, but that could be just due to the fact that it was new. We did drive with the moonroof open, and it seemed quieter than ours with the roof open—and that's a BIG plus!

yep, it's that time again and we seem to be repeating we seem to be repeating we seem to be repeating (STOP...it's like deja vu all over again!) last year's plans...2 days at Disney to finish up our free passes, autotrain to Lorton, stop in DC to see the new Indian Museum etc. This time no excuses from us, I promise...we liked Capitol Brewery and would love to get together with you DC/MD types. We will be staying somewhere From the 21st - 23rd, then on to NY. Any takers?

Take a gander at the new Owners Clubs page!

    Notice anyone familiar? :shades:

Yeah..yeah...I know about the typo. It's been reported and should be fixed later today.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Kate: it's like the old one, only 10% better. ;)

Serge: if we're in town I'll meet up, sure. Not sure which weekends we'll be at the beach, as the boss (read: wife) keeps the schedule.

Thanks for the spotlight, Karen. That's me in an Outback VDC last year in Vegas.

We should work on getting a colorful Subaru logo to replace that black/white one.

Sorry 'bout that Swampy, there was not a helmet in sight at the whole event.

And we needed one for the moose avoidance maneuver in the Murano...one person actually got it up on 3 wheels, and several people knocked down some cones.

Anyone else read the latest Edmunds comparison between the LGT Wagon and Dodge Magnum RT?

Interesting to see two very different vehicles that are common only in their wagon shape -- kind of like the GTO vs. STi comparo. The LGT got edged out by the Magnum's Hemi.

Susan would like to know how safe the Metro is riding in from Largo or College Park as we are thing of staying there. Let us know...thanks
    Serge :D
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Souldn't be a problem Serge. I take the Metro a lot when I go into DC. I don't use those stops, as they're not really convenient for me.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
They really should have tested an AWD Magnum since it's available. That's more apples-to-apples, especially since they didn't have any snow around to give the AWD a chance to really shine.

Plus, Legacy has advantages that would not necessarily show up in a short-term summer test. Visibility, reliability, traction, resale value, etc.

They picked an STi over a GTO this week, however.

Hey.... want to meet up for lunch on Friday?

We're moving on the 15th and that week is when I won't have any hair on my head... not that I have much to begin with ;)

    Let me know.

But the news looks very promising. We have been on pins and needles since her thryoid operation at the end of March, and I just didn't feel up to sharing much about it. The news was discouraging as pathology showed an agressive form hiding among the more common and treatable cancer cells. With the findings, her surgeon anounced that he was off the case, as this variant was beyond his comfort zone, but refered us to a collegue who only does this type. So after weeks of waiting, special diet prep, hormone treatments to make the cancer 'hungry' for radioactive iodine uptake, she got the tracer dose yesterday and full body scan today. It showed only a localized uptake in the tissue immediately surrounding where the gland was, and nothing else! The doctors comment: give your GP a big kiss for finding the lump, for in 6 months to a year, he might not have been able to help her.

So up came the hazmat team, and she drank the big dose of I-131, and can leave isolation when the gieger counter says she is safe to be among the living. I can then move her to a hotel room closer to home for a week, as she is cannot have contact with the kids. Then another scan next week to check on the progress.

Overall, we are still running scared, but there is a lot to be thankful for tonight.
