Our '99OB just started throwing a code yesterday. But in our case, I am afraid it's a misfire. I'm kind of hoping it's in 3-4, not a single cyclinder, because then odds are it's the coil pack. Otherwise, it's likely to be a valve

Hey Juice! Congrats on the car. How is it so far?

Or worse, a head gasket.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I have an ODBII scanner if you want to borrow it. Come by any time.

Most likely it's the plugs, plug wires, or ignition coil. Not to worry as the coil is only $80.

I had that problem when the chipmunks chewed through my spark plug wires!

Edit: we ordered ours, but won't take delivery for another 5-6 weeks!

I'd almost forgotten about that incident you had with those little rodents... hopefully they don't have a taste for '09s. ;)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Should I sprinkle Tabasco sauce on them? :D
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Tabasco on chipmunks? I'm all for trying new foods, but what kind of dish is that?! :surprise: :D
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    :D

I was setting the timing on my Miata and they were running around all over the place.

I think they're taunting me.

Edit: steve - read here about how Timing is Everything on an NA Miata:

Happy Holiday Weekend ... You guys be careful out there while you're having fun with friends and family!

I have not checked in for a while... Life's at work has been crazy, including a lot of business travel.

I'm so pleased to see all the familiar faces here... juice, Bob, Brenda, Mark, Serge, Frank, Dave, Jeff, Lucien2-- hi to all! This is by far the most stable internet community in the world! On most forums, the crowd is changing 90% over each 1/2 year.

In Feb, hubby sold his WRX at 90K mi for an amazingly good price of $16K. He bought new 2008 X Premium Forester in Dark Grey. With my 2.5X Forester 2006, and fond memories of my very first 2001 S Premium Forester, I think we're the most Forester'ed family on the planet.
  • grahampetersgrahampeters Member Posts: 1,786
    G'day

Yes, the most stable Crew on the planet!

I have been eyeing off the new Forester with interest as well. We seem to have largely paased the need for seven seats and are coming back to normal car usage for me. Tempting to trade the Kluger and get a new Forester with a Luxury pack, probably in about 12 months time. However the surging petrol price is making it tempting to look at something more economical like a Prius. Not sure I coul; adpat though

    Cheers

    Hi Kate (and Graham!)!

Not so sure about being "stable," but perhaps more "senile," as we've all been here since the great flood. :)

Congrats to your hubby on the new Forester. Does he miss the the WRX's "friskiness?"

    Bob
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
That was my concern - that he won't enjoy slower and bigger Forester... but he seems fine. Maybe because his WRX was automatic, and he never really had experienced that friskiness to full extent.

Although Subaru says 2..5X Premium has the same sound insulation and no special noise-decreasing treatment (as compared to 2.5X), we found that his 2008 Premium is definitely quieter on the highway (yes, tires and pressure in them -- all the same between 2 vehicles).

I wonder if alloy rims vs steel ones make all the difference in road noise?

It so happened that in Jan my company sent me on a business trip to my home country which I've left 20 yrs ago and never went back.

I stopped by my home town, and I was amazed and touched by how many people actually remembered me and really wanted to meet w/me after all those years... I wrote that part of my life off, essentially, but they didn't -- shame on me.

Even boyfriend from my high school dating 30 years ago  showed up, totally unexpectedly (boy, I hope my husband does not read this forum :blush::blush: ). At any rate, he looked sooooo much cuter when he was 23 than now at 53... ;-)

well, back to the topic - Subarus are very much respected over there, but awfully expensive, and many Foresters are still equipped with 2.0L engines...
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Tire noise is my only real complaint about my WRX—and its really bad. The all-new '08 model is much better in that respect.

I didn't know you came from another country. Where are you from?

    Bob
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
Technically speaking, that country does not exist any more, Comrade Bob... it collapsed in 1991. It was called the Soviet Union. What I visited in Jan was a replacement -- a somewhat discontented model that's now called Russian Federation. Same language, but very different economy and different set of values/attitudes in people.

My mother was a Swede though but she passed away early on, and I was raised in Moscow by my Russian father and grandma.

Ya know, when you're in the hospital and listed in "stable" condition? Well, dead qualifies as pretty stable too :P
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Hi there, Kate! Nice to hear from you. :)

I've been tempted lately to get some Rosetta Stone software for Russian language. I know (or knew, anyway) some Japanese & a pinch of Latin, but am not fluent in anything other than English. My city has a sizable Russian & Ukrainian immigrant population, and our port does trade w/Russia. It's seen as a growing niche here and I'm tempted to get familiar with it for a job advantage & for easier communication w/our newest citizens here. Most of the folks I've met are very nice.

Do you still speak it regularly?
  • kate5000kate5000 Member Posts: 1,271
    Hi Jeff,
I do speak Russian fluently and would be happy to assist you if I can!
  • jeffmcjeffmc Member Posts: 1,742
Thanks for the offer, kate, that's very generous! If I pursue this, I'll let ya know. :)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Good to hear from you, Kate.

My home town of Recife, Brazil, has changed all too much. It doesn't feel like "home" any more. Blame globalization, perhaps. There's a Pizza Hut or McDonalds on every corner now.

When we go nowadays (we're going this July) we like to visit small towns in the outskirts of the city just because they've changed less and you can still get local cuisine.

Anyone else planning any big trips this summer?
  • hammerheadhammerhead Member Posts: 907
Oregon coast mid-August. Cousin rented a beach house, we're taking the RV as an extra bedroom. The kids are all at camp that week, so Mrs. HH & I are escaping :)
Not a 'big' trip, but towing the trailer with the Suburban, it'll make for a 'big' gas bill!

Other than that, staying close to home. Between American Legion baseball, small kid's sports, and season passes to Silverwood, there isn't much need nor opportunity to do much more!

    Cheers!

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Cool, I bet that trip will be a whole bunch of fun.

When we come back we'll probably spend a week at the beach in August, and we have both kids in camp this year. So same here - a nice break for the two of us!

Our Forester arrived at the port, so it's in the USA now. SoA has been great about giving us updates, plus it arrived on exactly the day they said it would.

Hi there Kate, long time no hear/see :) . Congrats on becoming a 2 Forester family, and on the trip back home.

My wife and I got back this past weekend from AZ- first time out there (probably not last) and enjoyed it. So much construction going on though! How do you put up with it out there? Did the Grand Canyon (of course- but I rode on a mule for something different) and a hot air balloon ride in the Scottsdale area.

Frank- I remember asking you about the weather out there - I don't know how you can stand the high temps. When we left it was 103 - too hot for me.

The rental we had (Chevy HHR) stunk. I kept missing my Subie, especially when trying to get on the highway - or seeing some dirt trails in the desert :) .

Hope everyone is doing well and had a great holiday. Summers here and gas keeps going up  .

"Summers here and gas keeps going up."

Well, I can't agree on the summer part (it's low 50s & raining) but gas... at around $4.25/gal for regular octane, it was $63 to fill up my 2.5 Legacy last night. Cost me nearly $30 the other night just to take family into Seattle (& back) for dinner. It's like having an extra person to feed at the table!
  • hammerheadhammerhead Member Posts: 907
Put $107 worth of go juice in the Suburban the other day... yikes.

Forgot about one other vacation venture this summer - Vegas, last week in June, for, you guessed it, baseball camp! Staying at the Hard Rock, 5 boys from the team doing clinics & scrimmages at UNLV, parents poolside :)

    Cheers!

It's in final processing, PDI, etc.

Should leave the port and be here in MD on Monday or Tuesday.

    99 or 00 911 C4 6MT w/40-50k miles

    or

    08 G8 GT (New)

Mostly to use as a weekend car, some trips up to the mountains etc.

They are roughly the same price, but vastly different cars. Keep in mind my LGT will be daily driver, and the Armada will be around for towing and passenger duty if need be.

    -mike
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
Vastly different, no doubt. I'd go with the G8 GT because you get a warranty and parts are cheaper than the 911's.

Though that boxer 6 is nice...

any 911 is great- the 996 became much more refined and comfortable, and many will say lost a bit of its edge. Main issue is with the rear main seal leaking requiring pulling the whole engine and replacing the seal- up to $10k to do! :surprise:

Also, if used as a weekend getaway car luggage space is atrocious.

Might want to look at something a little newer, I think it was '02 that the 996 got the Varioram timing for a hp bump.

The good news is I've seen a lot of 996 911s on the market for very reasonable prices which may just improve even more as the next gen 911 (998) comes out this fall.

I'd say, as great as the new G8 is, owning a 911 is a piece of automotive history.

Like you have to ask? Rob M
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Are you comfortable in the 911?

C4s are sweeeet, but make sure you can live with the car first.

Since you have a practical daily, though...I vote 911 C4.
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
If it's just the 2 of you with a suitcase for the weekend, I would think the 911 would be a lot more fun, especially in the mountains with all the twists.

Then again, that's a "fun" response rather than an eduacted one. ;)

I'm not a big Porsche fan, but given the fact that you know your way around engines and cars in general I'd go with the Porsche. Your expected depreciation should also be much lower than the new G8 so barring any mechanical catastrophes, it should be cheaper over the long run.

Yeah figure we can toss some bags in the back seat and the tiny front trunk for a weekend, usually at my house upstate so a lot of stuff is already there. If I have to bring more people, the Armada is not going anywhere. :)

My thoughts are similar along this. The G8 in 5 years will be aproximately worth $1000 if I'm lucky. The 911 already has had a major portion of it's depreciation paid for by the original owner. I know at least a few mechanics who can work on the porsche engine or myself for simple stuff. Also the AWD would probably be more fun for me than the extra power of the G8.

We'll see, it's a ways off, but wanted to get some input on my kookie idea!

Mark- I'm shocked that you were in town and didn't even say hi :P

I hope you weren't worried what the missus would think about meeting someone you only know from the Internet. At different times I've met Juice, Bob, Loosh, Kate, Jim and Mike Smith and we've always had a good time.

As for it being 103? That's nothing once you learn to adapt. Once that happens it doesn't really seem hot until the temp tops 110 :shades: Actually, I rode my bike home from work one day last summer when the afternoon temp was 116 and as long as I was moving it really wasn't that bad.

    Frank,

No offense was intended. We got in and started exploring and everything so never had time to get on the hotels computer (except last night there to print our boarding passes for the next day). As for meeting people from the net, not a worry- after all you are a Subaru fan :) .

We did have such a nice time we are already planning on going back out again next year. There was so much to see that we missed!

  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
It's about that hot around here, Frank, except it's more humid!

Yesterday was so bad you just could not be outside unless it was by a swimming pool.

Luckily we were at the beach. :shades:
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Patti said Monday or Tuesday, and sure enough it came yesterday. They're prepping it and we will pick it up tonight! :shades:

Better yet, we found a buyer for our 02 Legacy. Got a pretty good amount for it - about $8000, so it retained 45% of its value after 6 years and 62k miles, even with a dent in the passenger door. Not bad. Gotta love Subaru resale.

Bob said it - the stars are in alignment. Pleaides, that is.
  • volkovvolkov Member Posts: 1,306
Congrats - I shouldn't have to tell you, but pics are mandatory. Some folks have been getting a littly lax in that regard lately ;-).
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
No worries, I'll get them up as soon as I can.

I want to get a pic of the 4 of us sticking our heads up out of the moonroof.

That is if the wife lets us stand up on the new perforated leather seats! :D

Finally! Now that there's going to be a Forester back in the Ateixeira driveway, the stars will be back in alignment at last :)

Wow it's already been 6 years since you got the Legacy? Seems just like yesterday.

    Yeah, no kidding. Time flies.

We're ordering special Chesapeake Bay license plates. It's an extra $20 but it raises funds to preserve the Bay plus the color matches our Newport Blue Pearl. :shades:
