Actually the Legacy looks quite a bit bigger, however it is the perception to Rita that it is, so she feels uncomfortable driving it. I know if you feel somewhat leery of a car then that is a sure recipe for an accident. Rita's present car is a Protege5 and she loves that. We are hoping to get a low mileage 09 Mazda3Gt sport at year end.

A friend has one and we are both impressed with it. Neither one of us likes the smiley face or swoopy lines of the 2010 Model 3.

    Cheers Pat.

There was supposed to have been a question mark at the end of "Rita's car was a Mazda 3", but instead it became a statement! Sorry!

We're hanging in there. Thanks for asking. I had to drop off the boards for a while (big brother was becoming intrusive), but I'm trying to get more involved again. Been fielding a lot of questions on OBDII operation lately. A pet interest of mine - all this computer stuff on cars.

I prefer the face of my 08 Miata over the grin on the 2009+ models, too.

Whistler's fine for snow, although not the best quality given the freeze thaw cycles this season.
They are hauling snow on Seymour which is the site for the Freestyle events. That's the hill on the north side of Vancouver that you can see from town and where snow is commonly spotty. They are actually pulling snow from the higher peak down to the ski area.
We had great snow up here until the Jan thaw and 5 days of rain.

Red is in Rossland, BC. About a 3+ hour drive for me. Too long for just one day, but if you're looking to stay a few days...

The hill on the north side of Vancouver = Grouse Mountain?
  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
    Thanks Paul

I was looking into nearby places to go- maybe next season we'll make it out to Idaho!

Seymour and Grouse are both in North Vancouver, but I goofed, and the freestyle events are at Cypress which is in near West Van which is really the West side of North Vancouver. Confused?? There is skiing at all 3 places.

I haven't been as active lately either, it has been a very rough year healthwise, so I didn't have a lot of interest in stuff, combination of pain from the knee replacement and heavy duty pain killers.

    Cheers Pat.

I sold the Titan today, got my full asking price with no haggling. I will sorely miss this car.

    Cheers Pat.

And the buyer drove off with a nagging suspicion that the deal must be too good to be true! ;)

Pat, I'm really sorry to hear about your knee and the aftermath of surgery. Sounds like no fun at all. I wish you well - and soon!

Great (maybe...) news about selling the Legacy. You took such great care of that car.

    Lucky buyer!

Yeah some lucky stiff is now bragging to everyone he meets about snagging the proverbial holy grail of used cars... the one that was lovingly and meticulously cared for by grandpa and was only driven once a week on Sundays :P (no offense Pat)

    So true! :D

My '93 Miata was like that, except it was the little old lady driving only to church on Sundays. At 8 years it only had 26k miles!
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
I picked up a vehicle like that, except mine was 28 years old at the time with 29,000 miles. Well, okay, so it wasn't exactly like that, but it was still the best vehicle purchase I ever made. :D

That's almost the size of it Frank :D except it was driven a little more than that.
Yeah Bob I admit to being some sad to it go.

Sure hasn't been a fun year Steve. Rita had a bad bout of shingles over Christmas 2008 and all of January 09. Then February I had a knee reconstruction which was not a success.

Then April a full knee replacement, which I would say is a success although still healing and still some post op pain. Surgeon did say it can take over a year for a full recovery from total knee replacement.
Some people heal quicker than others, from past surgical history I am a slow healer.

I still need to have the left knee replaced but I am waiting until I am fully recovered from the right knee first.

    Cheers Pat.

So, I finally have my car back! I sure came to appreciate that second car after moving back to "single-car family" mode for a week... especially after filling up the Forester THREE times in one week!

My friend was authorized a rental by USAA (the insurer of the at-fault driver) yesterday. Today USAA called to say they decided to declare his car a total loss. He received an estimate from the shop earlier yesterday that indicated repairs at $11,600. Various pricing guides estimate the retail value of his '08 Impreza 2.5i (manual) at $15,500 to $16,500. I am not sure how the insurance companies decide the repair/replace formula, though.

So, now he has to figure out what will replace it. With a growing family, he may not opt for a direct replacement.

I could be wrong but I think they normally total when the repair costs exceed 80% of value.

Second week in a row - what's up with that?

Anyhow, hello to all my friends - haven't been on the boards for a while and still trying to catch up with all the postings! All is well here. One year into the new job, which has become total chaos, but enjoying not having to drive 94 miles a day. Mikey is moving into his teens and not a little boy anymore. Time passes way to fast. Rob M

Probably better for me anyway, but at least I remembered! Sadly, that also means I am still at work....

    Same here; I couldn't get on. :(

    Bob
  • xwesxxwesx Member Posts: 17,728
Yeah, that was what I was thinking. I am concerned for him though because $11,600 is 80% of $14,500... far less than what he would have to spend to directly replace it. He might be able to get one for $16,000 here if he stumbled across a Pat special, but what does USAA anticipate reimbursing him? They did say it was "borderline," but decided to total it partially because it had frame damage and damage to "restricted availability" parts that would push the repair out to 6-8 weeks. So, perhaps they take the cost of a rental into account there, too.

I was trying to convince him to buy a replacement in Seattle so he could save some $ and we could do a road trip back to Fairbanks, but found out today that he does not have a passport/card. I am so disappointed.

hey .. just see how fast it passes when your GRANDCHILDREN hit the teenage years !!!

(at least that's what I hear from my much older friends .. LOL)

Hi Rob, good to hear from you, yeah I am sad too, it was a very reluctant sale but the truth is we have no use for two cars anymore, and the Titan was doing more sitting than driving.
It's ironic the guy who bought it takes care of his cars like I do, right down to the plastic on the floor for winter. So the car is going to a good owner. He was actually reluctant to take it out for a test drive on our dirty slushy streets. He owns a Forester right now and in the process of swapping a leather interior into it.

    Cheers Pat.

    Hey Rob!

It's amazing how fast time can pass. . . :(

My boys are now both teenagers too- they change so fast I feel like every week I'm talking to a new person!!!!

Hope you guys on the East Coast enjoy snow! I guess quite a bit is coming!

Sounds like you connected up with the right buyer, anyway! I know that I find it reassuring when I think a car is going to "a good home." I'm looking forward to getting my minivan running again this spring so I can put it up for sale.

My girls are now 7 and about to turn 14. Most of the time I thoroughly enjoy them both. Every so often, I'm tempted to feed them to the wood chipper. You can understand why some animals eat their young! ;)

Was I like that as a kid???? Na...
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
as the mother of 3 girls, stepmom of 2 boys, and grandmother of mostly boys .... i can tell you that you are 'right on' about those 7 year olds going on 14 ... girls get to that stage a LOT faster than boys do

It's supposed to snow all day. Winter storm warning until 10:PM tonight; 20-28+ inches is being called for. This could be the biggest snow storm ever recorded in Maryland, surpassing the Knickerbocker storm of 1922.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knickerbocker_Storm

I may try to use Deb's Forester as a snow plow for the driveway, as this snow is heavy. If it can move even some of the snow, that means less shoveling. I may even try the WRX, just for kicks. :)

    Sure wish I had a snowblower. :(

And guess what? They're calling for more snow on Tuesday!

If you stop to think about it really, it's nuts to get so attached to an inanimate pile of metal, and nuts and bolts. It is no wonder most of the population think car nuts should be certified :D

    Cheers Pat.

I feel for you guys Bob, been there done that, this winter has been relatively painless for us so far. But after the last couple of winters which were awful with lots of snow and a lot of really heavy snowfalls, we are due for some relief.

    I love my snowblower.

    Cheers Pat.

At least Titan found a good home and it sounds like the new owner will appreciate what he has.
  • rob_mrob_m Member Posts: 820
Good luck to you, Bob! This storm seems to be wicked. It's path is sliding right under Boston, so we will be getting nothing from it. Too bad, I don't mind getting buried at least once a winter.
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
We are about 20 miles north of the top edge of the storm, and just saw a couple of flakes early this morning. Not expected to see anything more. My folks (central NJ) are wintering in Phoenix, so they escaped. Beth's family in Spotsylvania, VA are getting hit pretty hard. The lost power a few hours ago, and being out on the battlefield, won't likely get services restored for days.
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
So far 26.5" recorded at BWI airport, making it the second worst snowstorm in Maryland history—and it ain't over yet. I think the record is 28.2", and we should break that before it's over. If they reach 28" the state can get federal emergency funds. My yardstick in my driveway is now about at 23".

I spent about an 1.5 hours just shoveling a path to the street. I can't imagine doing the whole driveway. I may have to break it into several days worth of shoveling.

The latest report is we may get another 3-9" on Tuesday or Wednesday. Knock on wood, we still have our electricity.

Unbelievable. I don't remember this much snow since 1979, I think it was.

The snow here is up to my son's waist. We tried to go sledding and I lost him in a snow drift! :D

I shoveled last night, about 8" of heavy, wet snow. Then again today about a foot or snow. But it keeps coming. I just did another 2" or so. My driveway can fit about 6 cars so my back is sore.

I have plants falling down all over the place. Even under the car port the cars were covered.

Lemme see if I can share this pic of my basketball hoop:

Here in the northwest corner of NJ, where we actually have what are actually classed as mountains, I got one single inch of snow. A push-broom took care of it. Supposedly, we had a dome of warm air pushing south against the storm, and it forced the storm east into the Atlantic from NJ instead of due north... the National Weather Service forecast started at 4-9 inches total Friday morning, then slowly dwindled down until by 3 am Saturday, the NWS called for just 1-2 inches, and that's all we got.

Friend in York PA sent pics of the rapidly disappearing flamingos on her front lawn... late morning, there were just heads; they were "gone" by afternoon.

By 4 pm, I actually had sunshine. I don't know if we're just lucky up here or being left out.

Howard Country, MD; which is where we are, got hit really hard. Some communities have reported over 30" of snow. I've got yard stick in our driveway showing 22". However, there was an area on the hill of our driveway where I shoveled probably close to 4' of snow, as it drifted there.

I'm absolutely beat. I shoveled maybe a third of our 150' or so driveway yesterday afternoon. We're still snowbound. I haven't gotten to Deb's car yet (my car is in the garage). I'm just going to take it a little bit at a time. I'm hoping that guy with the front-end loader shows up today. If not, I could be shoveling all week—assuming my back will hold up.

I went to bed at 10:00 last night. I can't remember the last time I went to bed that early. Getting out of bed this morning was pretty tough. I need to pace myself, as this could really aggravate my existing back problems. The problem is this snow is really heavy. It's not the light powdery stuff we've had to date.

Yesterday some guy with a small Bobcat made a couple of passes on our street, or at least part of the street. I think a plow may have come by last night but I'm not sure. I'm concerned about some of our neighbors, several of which are elderly. I can't imagine them shoveling out.

My next door neighbor last summer erected a tube-framed vinyl covering to protect their new Camry Solara convertible, as their garage was filled with a boat and an old MG. Well that collapsed on their new car, due to the weight of the snow. We lost at least one big branch from one of our pine trees, maybe more?

They're predicting more snow for Tuesday and Wednesday. Not good.

At least you and I have power...

My sister lost power yesterday morning. Temps went from 72 to 62 degrees by mid afternoon, and they still had not plowed her street yet.

Finally, at around dinner time, she packed her Chinchilla and bailed - afraid the animal would die if power doesn't come back for several days. She made it here around dinner time and had her first warm meal in a day.

Her Forester got her through, though it was a rough drive. If she'd bought that Camry that was her 2nd choice, she would have been stranded (I probably would have gone to get her, actually).

My street is now plowed, they made several passes. I had to keep shoveling to clear the front of the driveway, but we should be good until the next storm, Tuesday night.

I have a blister in my left hand, a strained right wrist, and a sore back. My drive isn't as long as Bob's but it's two cars wide. I also cleared the bushes and the cars in the photos above, so that eventually they can get out.

It's cold but the sun is out. Hopefully some of it melts before the next storm!
  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
A neighbor with a huge John Deere snowblower did the top part of our driveway and parking pad. Best of all, he only worked for cookies, which Deb had just baked. :)

I also had to give him some gas, as he had just done a few other neighbor's driveways. I had just filled my 5-gal. gas container in anticipation of this storm, for my generator. I had it in my shed in the backyard. Trying to walk to the shed and back (with the heavy gas container) was almost impossible, as the snow was up to my crotch. Thanks to the previous snowstorm last week, there was an additional 4 or 5 inches of snow on the ground, in addition to this new snow.

Still no plow has touched our street; just the Bobcat which came by yesterday. So if you have AWD or 4WD, you can get through; 2WD? Maybe, maybe not.

    Bob
