    A house like that is likely 1890-1905 or so (by then California was really getting into arts and crafts/craftsman styles - think Doc Brown's mansion).

    BMW 507. IIRC, it almost bankrupted BMW due to its high production cost.

    Yup, that's a 1957 BMW 507 which despite it's attributes did not sell well due to high cost of production. Many think it the most beautiful Bimmer ever made.

    That looks like "Le Dandy", one (out of a total of two) of a few different coachbuilt Citroen DS21 coupe varieties built by Chapron in France in the 1960s.

    Youve got it ab348, le Dandy was one of around 50 built around 1965. I don't know if that roof was removable but I suspect it was since Chapron built almost all of the cabriolet versions of the Citroen DS.

    Corgi Toys did a Citroen "Le Dandy " by Chapron in dark maroon red.

    I have it still although our attic is inaccessible presently

    I wouldn't have had a clue how old that house was in the previous shot, I worked in property management for the last forty years and can pretty well guess the era with British houses sometimes but we don't get wooden houses like that one except really old places - half timbered ones in the country side - the sort of place where Miss Marple finds a body in the potting shed...

    That 59 Caddy is full blown Baroque really, the stylists pretty much said "put everything on it"

    Yes, a 1959 Fleetwood 60 Special. Also in there, a 1961 Valiant V200. I'll go with the Corvair's being a 1961.

    I wonder if in 1966, that Caddy still had any luxury cachet, was seen as something quirky and fun, or was just another aging now-obsolete looking used car.

    Yes, I suppose that Cadillac would have been just another old motor like any other even if it qualified for its own zip code but I remember the first time I saw a 59 Caddy on the road - a grey four door one in East London, in about 1990, and was just going past our office in a row of traffic. It looked so huge, and outlandish in that context !

    The problem with the rapid styling changes of that era was that unless you bought new every year you ended up with something that looked "so last year". By 1966 a much more restrained look was in vogue pioneered by the slab-sided Lincoln and was copied by Cadillac and others.

    For a long time I didn't care for the vertical-headlight Caddys but with the passage of time I have come to realize they are pretty much the last ones to have the build and materials quality that Cadillac was renowned for. Later versions became much more like other GM C-bodies with lots of plastic and fake wood.

    Another one from the Ruscha collection at the Getty Museum, just a lazy 1966 Sunday on the residential part of Sunset Blvd in L.A., looks like car-washing day for this family.



    This house still stands in pretty much the same exterior form right down to the hose bib by the garage door, but has been fully renovated inside and sold for $1.5M in 2015. Recent market valuations place it at a modest $2.6 million.

    Finally a 60s LA photo with imports! The white roadster is an XK-120 OTS. In the garage is a mid-60s Buick and at the curb is an Opel not commonly seen in the US. Getting a bath is a 60-63 Thunderbird.

    Re build quality. I was at a captive supplier for GM cars long, long ago. I was shown how the product which was used across GM lines, had the best quality parts out of the group selected for Cadillac Division. Any that had a slight flaw that didn't affect serviceability were fine for the other divisions. Nothing but the best.

    On a similar note.. I had a friend who got a job at the Ford transmission plant in Sharonville in the late '70s. He tested parts. First testing die was for Lincoln. If it passed that, it could be used on any FOMOCO product. If it failed, tested on the Mercury die, if it failed that, then on a Ford die. Higher tolerances for variations, as you went down.

    I thought that was crazy.

    Sounds like Seattle housing prices, but Seattle isn't LA - or in some ways, it is.

    T-Bird being washed appears to be a 64.

    Regarding the Caddys, the vertical headlight cars are also the last ones with a bit of clean 60s modern design language - when the design changed, baroque bloat started setting in.

    closest is a Volvo 122 Amazon. With some sort of Rambler behind it. Way back next to the building looks like an early Falcon too.

    IIRC they made some Volvos in (New Brunswick)Canada. There's a Jag DHC (XK-150?) parked on opposite curb. Other imports include several VWs w large back glasss (so post-1957) and a MinorTravelall. That's more imports than we've seen in contemporary LA photos!

    they assembled kits up there in Canada. And IIRC there is a shipload of them under the water still.

    Under the tree with a sign unceremoniously nailed to it, lower line 64 Chevy sedan.

    Next to the building, 59 Ford/Meteor sedan, behind it appears to be an Envoy (Vauxhall Victor FB). Way in the background right next to the Chevy tree I see the nose of another Volvo 122/Amazon.

    No, they made Volvos right here in Halifax, so that one is a hometown car. CKD cars in crates were shipped here from Sweden and the assembly plant for years was right on the docks. In the '80s they moved the facility to a new purpose-built plant on the edge of town that ran for only a few more years before Volvo pulled out. For a time Volvos were everywhere here in town - the Mayor had them as his official car for many years, and they even tried a couple as police cruisers (that didn't work out so well). We had 2 144s, and my brother had a 122.

    That black car facing us above the slope outside the main entrance has a grille which looks odd- is that a Meteor too?

    Nice XK 140/150 too and that Traveller could be as new as anything there too as although it looks ancient they were making those into 1971 though probably stopped going over the pond few years before

    I think this one is from Portsmouth and about 1983 but I haven't got a note of exactly when.

    Its a bit small but expands with a click - there is a wide range of cars here and a number not sold in North America by then.

    bottom right, a gold Scirroco next to a red wedge Rover 5 door. 2 rows up from that an Opel Kadette wagon. Left side of that row is a silver Volvo. Can't quite make out the model, but maybe a 760?

    E36 BMW convertible next to the yellow 3 wheeler (a Robin?) is really sharp looking.

    I love the scale difference to a lot in the US, since that VW camper van in the middle looks huge here.

    Cool pic but I think 1983-ish. Beside the yellow Reliant Robin lower center is an E30 Baur, I also see a couple Ford Sierras (one 3rd row "up" 3rd car from right, another in the 5th row "up" center, backed in next to a Mini. At far right of that row, beside a yellow Fiesta, is that a Maestro?

    4th row "up" behind the Sierra looks like a white Datsun, maybe a Bluebird/180B (?, sold here as 610). 3 to the right of the white Datsun looking car appears to be a LWB MB W126. 5 to the left of the Datsun appears to be a first gen Celica notchback, to the right of that maybe a MB W123 wagon. Lots of spotting going on here.

    I think you are right on the left Volvo, and that Scirroco was a nice new car than, as indeed was the Rover.
    The red estate two back from the Rover is a Ford Escort mk II and is next to an Opel Ascona saloon.

    That yellow Reliant Robin is probably top heavy even with the luggage rack empty, but the people a couple of cars to the right are leaning on a blue Robin estate

    The scale difference is noticeable compared with what we have nowadays - one of the problems here is the car parks were mostly designed in the 70's/80's but the cars have put on weight since...

    Yes I think its maybe couple of years later. A wide range of cars and colours too. And that is a Bauer BMW - they were sold here for a couple of years but were never that common.

    Oldest I can see is a white Mark 2 Cortina right to the back - it is in the penultimate row with a blue Skoda with black roof beyond it..

    Yes that's a Maestro next to the yellow Fiesta and the booted version the Montego is also represented behind the turquoise Fiat 128 van - and the Datsun Bluebird 180 was a good seller too

    Any ideas on the little red car two to the right of the white car with the bonnet up?
    Also the High roof whitish van next to the Morris Marina van(blue) which was one we didn't send to the US - you had enough trouble with the Austin Marina...

    Dad had a 72 (K) license plate and 74 (M) Cortina GXL and E trim level as company cars. If I remember that was the 3rd generation of the Cortina.
