Many years ago, the company I worked for was asked to perform some training for Manitoba Hydro. A co-worker and I drew the short straw and were asked to travel to Winnipeg in February to deliver. My co-worker went first, and reported that temps were around -30 the whole week.

A couple weeks later, it was my turn. I got lucky; the city was experiencing a bit of a heat wave and the temps were between 0 and -5 (Celsius) during my visit. The customer did not want to incur the cost of a rental car, so I was driven to and from the training site each day, and I was left to explore downtown during the evenings after work.

Winters are bad in Winnipeg. The corner of Portage and Main downtown has the rep of being the coldest spot in Canada due to the temps and the wind tunnels from the buildings. Of course summers aren't so great in Winnipeg either. About 20 years ago I was there on business in June and it was a nice evening the day we arrived, so my colleague and myself decided to have dinner on the hotel's sidewalk patio. All was well until the city's municipal mosquito spraying trucks came along and fogged us and everyone else. They have a big mosquito problem there in the summertime.

Randy Bachman (ex of The Guess Who and BTO) wrote a song about growing up there called Prairie Town which has this as the chorus:

Winter nights are long, summer days are gone

Springtime melts the snow, rivers overflow

If the code goes off and the car won't run how do you get it to a place that can clear it?

@Snake, I read that as you can’t use RS when there is a code but you can start it using the normal start means.

That sounds similar to how some enterprising lawyer almost destroyed car leasing in NY when he managed to make GM responsible for the actions of someone who leased a car and then went out and killed some people in an accident. Bizarre but this state is run for the benefit of tort lawyers.

You might be thinking of the case of Tilden Rent-a-Car. Tilden was a Canadian rental company and quite successful up here even with competition from Hertz and Avis. One of their cars was indeed in a terrible crash in NY and a number of people were killed. A lawsuit was filed and Tilden was found to be responsible somehow. They ended up having to sell the operation to National Rent a Car.
That just proves that with a good enough lawyer and incompetent lawyers opposing that sharp lawyer, you can get away with murder...OJ did.

Happens not infrequently in these parts, along with stolen cars from said idling. Of course, on the west side, people will do it when it is 30F out.

Regarding remote starts, be aware that depending on state and location letting a car idle of more than a short time (dependent on location) is illegal. Yeah getting a ticket for it is very rare but does happen.

GM got remote start from the get go in the early 2000s. A quick two button command on the key fob and it was running, either heat or AC would come on depending on the ambient temp.

In later years the App came on board which allowed you start the car with your phone. I still liked the fob activation. If I was loading up groceries or whatever I’d start the car with the fob, settle the kids and then load.

The app on the phone isn’t as convenient. You have to unlock your phone, find the app, click start and then enter a pin. Not worth the hassle.

Our Volvos only have RS with the app, so realistically the only time I’ll ever use it is in the situation I explained above.

    First world problems for sure.....

Good to hear positive comment about GM's handling of remote start.

I feel like twitter having to do fact checks on the remote start "information" here. LOL

The GM remote start is on the key fob as one of the buttons. It requires the doors have been locked and the button held for 2 seconds or more to initiate the remote start. And it's on the GM app with different names for different
vehicles, if you subscribe to the app after the initial 3 years or so.

The remote start only runs for 10 minutes. That's not enough for today's clean engines to kill people.
BMW with a non-company remote start may not have had the time limit on the engine run time.
Remote start GM may be cancelled by pressing the RS button. If the time on the initial RS expires, it may only be reinitiated one time. Total of 20 minutes.

10 minutes is enough to cause a serious medical issue if not death if someone is in the garage with the door closed for an extended period of time. However most garages are not as sealed as a house is and most of the CO produced should escape to the outside.

That 20 minutes can be great when it's been snowing (for the FL folks, that's the cold stuff that falls instead of rain when the temp is below 32 deg F) and your car is outside. Because that will melt snow on windows part of the time.

I open the garage door a foot or so allowing convection airflow to vent the garage: in at the bottom, out at the top above the garage door under the top beam.

Nothing is nicer than leaving the garage and not getting hit with a blast of 15 deg F air because the engine was just started and coolant temp ir only 80 deg F. and can't warm the incoming air. My comfort and my bride's comfort are not insulted if the car has run for several minutes in the vented garage because the coolant is 120 or higher by that time.

And RS won't work if the hood is not latched or if any of most service engine codes is set. That can be very annoying if a simple code for purge valve or gas cap leak is set which doesn't affect the engine, but the RS won't work till cleared.

If the code goes off and the car won't run how do you get it to a place that can clear it?
I wasn't clear enough. The car won't RS, but it runs just fine if you put the ignition key into the ignition. A check engine light may show or may not show depending on the type of code it is.

When we got the Cruze for our son and I took the Cobalt back, the Cruze set a code for emissions system operation. I just cleared the code with my code reader and he kept the tank full. The full tank keeps the emissions system integrity check from being run: they usually run if tank less than 85% and more than 15% full. Then we got it in for service. But meanwhile he could remote start the Cruze from his apartment in the morning.

The day you get a ticket for idling in your own garage I’ll climb in and rev into oblivion.

One time, I couldn't get into my truck because the doors were frozen.
Remote started it and ran it for about 10 minutes and was able to open the door.

I just pour hot water on everything.

Not uncommon even here for freezing rain or rain followed by plummeting temps to freeze up everything - door locks, door handles, door-to-body interface. That's always a fun morning.
I let my son take my Lincoln to work one night. Freezing rain locked up the doors so bad he pulled the door handle off trying to open it up.

I remember New Years Eve of 1978 we had a freezing rain and when I left work there was about an 8th of an inch of ice covering my car. I managed to get the door open and started the engine and warmed up the car to start to melt the ice.

No, some years ago I recall a car manufacturer (GM I believe) was held liable for a car crash involving a leased vehicle. $25 million if I recall correctly. Understandably, they halted all leases in NY. They ultimately found a work around whereby you would buy the car and agree to either a balloon payment after 3 years or a return of the car. Fancy language for a standard lease agreement.

I think federal legislation in 2005 made the issue moot.

I searched for some reference to the case here in NY but can’t find anything from that far back. Maybe I dreamed it but I remember being outraged by it at the time.

I forgot about that happening.....since being in Florida for the last 10 winters. I used to carry a little bottle of that lock de-icer stuff with me. Now cars have remote openers....hope they don't freeze up.

Bored and started web surfing so I looked around. It appears that a Tilden rental crashed into a tanker truck causing a large explosion causing damage to several buildings and cars and a few deaths. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed but due to the wheels of justice moving slowly the lawsuit did make investors nervous and due to that Tilden had financial issues. I do believe that they liquidated prior to the lawsuit being dismissed.

I installed the new CHMSL on the Clubman today. It was a very easy fix- I didn't even break out the fire extinguisher. Just remove 8 T20 screws, unplug and snap out the old led panel, and as the Brits sat, installation is the reverse of removal. Another day dancing on the ragged edge of danger...

Here is something for youze guys to think about. I got an obit notice in my email that a fellow I supposedly know died. It is from an outfit called Legacy.com, out of Chicago.
I don't know of anyone by this name. There was an interior decorator shop in town (population 25000) and that is the only person I know who has that name. That store has been gone for about 5 years.
Is it possible, they check to see who dies, they notify people in the same town, that way they can target you for more stuff?

Not that I know of. They seem to specialize in obits I guess. I don't belong to Facebook or Twitter or anything. I did have one Zoom meeting, maybe they share your email address and hook up with funerals in the area. Maybe they want me to pre-sign for an obit for when the magic day happens. I wonder if they will let me tell the people off that I want to tell off ;)

Tilden sold to National and then National was gobbled up by Enterprise.

Keep laughing in the face of fate like that and you risk death opening the refrigerator door.😧😧😧

Oh man you had to use a fancy Torx driver. You got skilz.
Yep, nothing like having the right tool/s when you’re doing a job. I’ll bet he has both a claw hammer and a ripping hammer too and knows the difference without running to Google to look it up.

That email alert sounds like you have an account with legacy.com. Have you searched or posted to that site?
I’m still waiting for my $26 million from Nigeria! 😜🤪. I also am still waiting for my inheritance from a long lost and forgotten great uncle who lived in Hong Kong! 🤓
Just for your info...I never lived in Hong Kong.😎

Not that I know of. They seem to specialize in obits I guess. I don't belong to Facebook or Twitter or anything. I did have one Zoom meeting, maybe they share your email address and hook up with funerals in the area. Maybe they want me to pre-sign for an obit for when the magic day happens. I keep getting voicemails on my cell phone from a NYC area code in Chinese. I can only hope they have some money for me as well.

Not sure why you would have both but what they hey. I'll bet that most people would think they are the same.

..........it lasted for 11 years! - not very long for an LED.

LEDs like anything else seem to operate on a wide spectrum of quality and lifespan. My over-the-range microwave oven has a pair of lights on the underside. They take a bulb I had never heard of before, an E17 type. The originals were incandescent and lasted for many years but when one finally blew out I couldn't find them anywhere except at an appliance parts place. I paid nearly $20 for a genuine GE replacement, which lasted not even 2 months before it also blew. I then started exploring online and found a number of LED versions on ebay, all from the Far East. They were ridiculously cheap so I ordered some. The first to arrive looked good until it too failed within weeks. It started flickering instead of blowing entirely. But the second bunch that arrived worked great and continue to do so. I also have a reading lamp near my bed where I replaced the incandescent bulb with an LED version (I believe a Sylvania), and now it too is flickering. That seems to be the typical failure mode of LEDs.

You’re right most people don’t know the difference BUT if you’ve done any rough carpentry you know the difference. To save me time trying to explain it, go to Google. AND, hammers have different weights for ease of driving different size nails. It makes no sense to use a 22 ounce hammer to drive carpet tacks. Of course today with air nailers that is my choice and there are different sizes of those too but it saves having to swing a hammer when you got lots of hammering to do. I’d be willing to bet that most young carpenters today look at a traditional hammer as a tool that only takes up space in their tool box and should be avoided unless forced to use it.

8 screws seems like overkill for that little part, but the Germans never found a part that couldn't be make more complicated than it needed to be!

The 8 screws secure a trim piece above the rear doors that is about 30 inches long and 6 inches wide. The led strip as well as the rear window washer nozzles snap into it.

$85 and 15 minutes to replace an 11 year old part is hardly going to keep me up at night.
