I’ve been leaving start/stop on lately. Combined with auto brake hold it’s not too bad. If I’m stuck in traffic it certainly goes off, but putting around town it’s not horrible.
I used to despise it, but my wife turns it back on in her car all the time (it’s probably the one setting not tied to a profile) so I decided to give it a shot.
With as much as we drive it probably saves us 25 cents a month.
I really don't get why some people don't like it. My wife doesn't like it, but when I ask her why she just said she doesn't like it. I've learned to just let that sleeping dog lie there.
Don't get me wrong. I never said I liked it. It just doesn't bother me.
I don’t have that feature on any of my vehicles so maybe I’m not used to it but stop-start to me is annoying because it feels like someone else is making decisions or is in control of my car. It might be required for the modern driver who has no situational awareness but I’m cheap enough that I turn off my engine in the drive-thrus. In stop and go traffic I don’t see the point.
It was only added to get out better mileage to meet government guidelines. Your Kia might get good enough mileage without it. Remember, cars that have the feature generally have HD starters to take the extra load, shutting off your engine may put extra wear on the starter.
Well, at least it will be me burning out the starter not some electric nannie.

Doesn’t the condo have some sort of maintenance guy who could do something like that for you? I understand once you get jmonroe in there it might be hard to get him out.
As for DIY projects I had a water line to the refrigerator and an outside hose bib in need of repair.
The plumber is just finishing up. I’ve come to the point where soldering pipes in the cold and crawling under the sink are best hired out. Same with oil changes.
I’ll probably still do stuff that reasonable people won’t do for any price, like climbing on the roof to trim branches.

Case in point. Not even three months in and the two year old dishwasher is dead. It was acting funny toward the end of the cycle, then not finishing drying and finally would only work if you reset the breaker. During the day you would hear it beeping just sitting idle. Quick Google finds its most likely the main board and/or the control panel. $300 in parts for a $400 builder’s grade dishwasher.
So... we bought a new Kitchen Aid and they wanted $150 to deliver, install and take the old one away. For me it was worth the money not having to deal with it.
For those interested, since we love dishwasher talk.. this is the one we got. Went with Kitchen Aid (Whirlpool) since we loved the Kenmore branded Whirlpool at the old house.
So it does kill me that our kitchen is mismatched. GE cooktop, range hood and double oven. Samsung fridge and a KA dishwasher. You really can’t see the DW since it’s behind the island so that’s a plus. Certainly first world problems!

My Stinger is still at the dealer's service dept for the fire in the engine bay recall. I called them to get an update yesterday. Not sure exactly what's going on. But, the first service writer I talked to said the parts weren't in yet (they said they were when I dropped it off). I asked to talk to the service manager, who told me they found some other things wrong with the Stinger.
"Such as?"
I guess the electronic shifter, which mimics a mechanical shifter, started balking at going into gear. The shifter would move, but no gear would be engaged. Meaning, either the movement of the shifter would not correlate to the proper gear. Or, the transmission was going bad. Plus, the "heated steering wheel" button, which is also in the console, stayed stuck down in the “on” position. It has a timer on it, but I guess that’s fouled up, too. Result? It drains the battery completely.
What would cause this?
Seems, they found the culprit to be some sort of sticky fluid was spilled in the console, and over time more and more “gunk” would accumulate in the area, and the electrical portions in the console would corrode and quit working. The fix it seems is to replace the entire console with all the associated electronics that are in the console. There isn’t just one or two pieces that can be fixed.....it’s an entire unit.
What’s that got to do with me? The “spillage” is not covered under warranty, and the console and labor to replace it costs well over $1,000.
As I explained to them, there are only 3 entities that have driven the Stinger than I’m aware of.....
1) The selling dealer, Wyler Kia 2) The servicing dealer, Cronin Kia 3) Me
I know I didn’t spill anything as I don’t eat or drink in my car. That leaves #1 and #2. #2 said they didn’t. #1 has yet to deny or admit anything.
Kia corporate says it’s not covered under warranty. Servicing dealer is trying to get KIA to cover the repair under “goodwill”. No one seems to be budging.
I don’t even know if they’ve done the recall work, yet.
I contacted KIA Customer Service. We all know those people have one job to do. Listen intently and then put my complaints in the circular file.
Believe it or not, I HATE this. But, it’s now going on 3 weeks of this fiasco. I filed for Lemon Law with BBB Autoline.
I know the drill. BBB contacts Kia corporate. Kia corporate will either hold the selling dealer’s feet to the fire (remember, same dealer group as the one who I had the Cadillac craziness with). They seem to dig in, as they did with the Cadillac. Not thinking that’s going to end well with them.
Or, Kia agrees to cover it under warranty, which they’ve given no indication of doing so far.
We go to arbitration, which is a crap shoot.
As it stands, my car is sitting at the servicing dealer’s with no battery hook up, I suppose gathering dust.
Dealers and Kia corporate are stuck in a stalemate.
And then Kia wonders why Stinger sales are dead in the water. You simply cannot sell a vehicle designed to compete with Acura/Audi/BMW/Mercedes/Volvo/etc. from a mass market showroom.
Especially when you have a horrid dealer network that fails to take responsibility whenever an issue arises and points the finger to corporate while corporate points the finger at the dealership. That leaves the customer hanging out to dry. You could change a few words in GG's post and it could be a post from me.

We bought all GE appliances when we bought our house back in 2010. We redid the kitchen in 2015 and used the same SS GE appliances. We bought a new fridge. About 2 years after we redid the kitchen, the DW & Microwave were shot. I replaced the DW with a Kitchen Aid & the Microwave with a Whirlpool. The electric range is GE Profile and still in good shape.
I’m not happy with the GE Profile Fridge. The part between the 2 doors doesn’t close automatically. A part of the freezer handle broke off, & the drain gets clogged with ice often. We have to take everything out of the freezer & take the ice out of the bottom. It’s a pain.

Leasing offers no relief from a lemon. A lemon in most States happens well before 3 years or 36,000 miles. I remember towing the Neon out of the garage on day 1 or 2 depending on if you count the day of arrival as day 0 or 1.

Would leasing really help. The car is less than a year old with at least 2 years left to go on a lease. It would be easier to hand it back at the end of the lease, but during the lease the leaser probably has to pay for repairs not covered under warranty.
Another thing, odd the car has a problem.....that just happens to be something not covered by the warranty, and who ever heard of a liquid getting into the console on a fairly new car, especially if there are no signs the person eats and drinks in their car. What good is a warranty if the car maker tries everything possible to not honor the warranty?
We all know that GG didn’t spill anything but it only takes one time to screw something up. The manufacturer knows he didn’t build the car with that problem and the dealer isn’t going to admit they did it, so we are in a he-said they-said dilemma which the customer will almost always lose. I hope you’re not saying “if this was a Mercedes, they’d cover it” because in situations like this everyone claims innocence.

OK, briefly. They found a “discrepancy with my oil change log sheet”. Said the mileage shown for an oil change I did after they did warranty work for a seat belt light was lower than when they did that work. I showed them where their bookkeeping was wrong with a few service visits but that made no difference to them. jmonroe
That's what I wanted.
Just remember that with every brand you will find people that have had really bad experiences and people that have had really good experiences. I for one am very satisfied with the Hyundai's that I have had, taking two close to 200K and one now over 100K. I have had wonderful experiences with Hyundai covering its warranty work even on high mileage cars with no questions asked. I wouldn't hesitate on getting another.
Don't let one bad experience nor just one good experience cloud your judgement.

I agree. At least from what I could see from 100 feet away, it looked fine. Body shop work is tough to hind, though.

well, get a ranch so it isn't too high. And I am happy to practice on plumbing pipe work on your house. I still won't stick a screwdriver into the panel though. That one is on you.
I can replace outlets, switches and light fixtures or ceiling fans. Stuff where the wires are already there. Same with plumbing. No problem putting on a replacement faucet either as long as the connections are already there.
mismatched kitchen brands, I don't even notice. our fridge is LG and stove Samsung, and they match perfectly. The DW is kitchenaid, but that has a panel to match the cabinets so can't see that. If it ever dies will probably just get a stainless one, I think we picked out a Maytag last year when it was acting up (but later seemed to cure itself). Turns 10 YO this summer, which sounds like a pretty good run these days on a DW.

I should go on the SSA site and see what my current estimate is. Used to get statements but I don't see any for quite a few years, and the last one I found I think still had early years on it (back into my college days). thankfully I make slightly more now than when I was doing work study and summer jobs!

I don't like the wasted delay time, or lag.... it might only be a second or less, but multiply that by thousands over a lifetime and it adds up to a lot of wasted time.

Once you set up on-line, they stop sending the paper statements, and send you an email annually, reminding you to check the website.
@explorerx4 is correct. Earnings years don’t fall off, but they use your 35 highest years. However, previous years have multipliers to account for inflation.

yup. I wasn't clear. I meant that my report only went up to about 35 years at the time I got it, so covered some HS and college years (I was about 53 when I got it). so every year after that was a normal salary, dropping one of the early ones off (at this point, all my counting years are from after college and working FT). Not sure though exactly how the projections work (I thought it assumed you would basically make the same as current up through your retirement date)

I don’t think SSA sends out those paper record of earning anymore. You have to set up an account with passwords that you forget and then go nuts trying to access.
SSA does send us paper notices of our COLA increases though.

Mike, so sorry about your accident. I hope your recovery is swift. But, in the it could be worse department:
One month after his 87th birthday and testing Covid positive, my father passed away on Sunday. We had hope for recovery, as he moved from hospital ER to general population; then from Covid section of Rehab to non-covid section which seemed to indicate improvement. Alas, no.
My brother and I are consoling ourselves with the belief that had he recovered (and not even sure what "recovery" would have looked like), he would not have been physically able to live the life he would have wanted. Phone calls in the last week were very tough, he was emotionally quite down, saying, "This is no way to live."
RIP to a very good man.

@laurasdada - so sorry for your loss. The 5th anniversary of my dad's passing is at the end of this month.
My mom is in CA, too - in a long term care facility close to my sister in San Diego. She got her first COVID-19 vaccination last week. Here's hoping she responds well and is able to get the 2nd dose in a timely manner.
How many "abacomikes" does it take to change a light bulb over the kitchen dinette table? The answer is NONE! Why is it none? Saturday night the light bulb needed to be replaced so I took my step stool and was trying to get the glass cover off the fan (it was a bulb underneath the kitchen fan) and lost my balance - down I came onto my left wrist and back hitting my head with the glass flying everywhere. What is a 76 year old man doing trying to change a lightbulb that requires a stepstool? At least that's what my daughter and my doctor said to me after I explained why I was bruised and in horrible pain.
My daughter warned me that if something like that needed to be done, I was to call her first. My doctor told me that if I ever did something like that again, I was going to have to find another doctor.
I had Xrays taken of the elbow, arm and wrist and luckily, no breaks - but I did chip a bone fragment in my hand which caused the pain and swelling. My back has not recovered yet, but there is always hope.
As for my head - well that's another story. I was stupid to try to do something like that. I could have really sustained significant injuries like a broken hip or skull fracture.
Maybe I'll just pay for jmonroe's round-trip air ticket and have him fix all the things that need fixing in my Condo and then he can enjoy a week in the sun and warmth of beautiful South Florida.

She fell and shattered her tibial plateau. 3 days in the hospital, external fixator (traction), then surgery 2 week later. Plates and screws. Then rehab for months. She still doesn't have full mobility. We now have a step stool.

I don't like the wasted delay time, or lag.... it might only be a second or less, but multiply that by thousands over a lifetime and it adds up to a lot of wasted time.
? Meaning a waste of YOUR time? Which car is this? Sounds like a REALLY bad system if it is making you wait at all. In all cars I have had it in thus far, as soon as I begin to release the brake, it restarts. I don’t have to change anything on my part. Even if I were pretending to be Vin Diesel when the green light strikes, the engine is spinning before I can apply the gas. Zero wasted time.

OK, briefly. They found a “discrepancy with my oil change log sheet”. Said the mileage shown for an oil change I did after they did warranty work for a seat belt light was lower than when they did that work. I showed them where their bookkeeping was wrong with a few service visits but that made no difference to them. jmonroe
That's what I wanted.
Just remember that with every brand you will find people that have had really bad experiences and people that have had really good experiences. I for one am very satisfied with the Hyundai's that I have had, taking two close to 200K and one now over 100K. I have had wonderful experiences with Hyundai covering its warranty work even on high mileage cars with no questions asked. I wouldn't hesitate on getting another.
Don't let one bad experience nor just one good experience cloud your judgement.
Everyone has to draw a line in the sand somewhere... Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
You missed my point, someone is getting information in order to make a decision. Basing your decision based on just one persons experience be it good or bad is not the best way to go, especially when you are spending tens of thousands of dollars.

That's a false sense of economy. Sure that second or less multiplied be every stop for 50 years adds up but in reality it's not that much wasted time. You cannot bank away time. In reality will saving that fraction of a second get you home any faster? Most likely not in any noticeable way, and you still wake up the same time tomorrow regardless of if you get home a second sooner or not today.

My next-door neighbor is in her 'late '90s now, still living in the house she and her late husband had built in 1954. He passed away many years ago, I believe in the late 1970s.
A dozen or so years ago, she met a man who became her companion, Bob, who was just a few years younger. I met him a few times and he was quite pleasant, although very hard of hearing and so he tended to be rather loud in his way of speaking. But he was still energetic like she was, did a number of maintenance chores around the house, and they seemed a good pair.
One summer day I opened the front door to get something from my mailbox and heard sounds from next door. Looking over, I saw him on the concrete front stoop, standing on a kitchen chair, changing the light bulb in the porch ceiling light. I went back inside.
About 10-15 minutes later I heard sirens and general commotion outside. I looked out and saw that paramedics had arrived and Bob was prone on the steps, apparently having fallen off the chair. But he was moving and talking as they attended to him before they carted him off to hospital.However, he never came back as apparently he had a brain bleed from striking his head and died from the injury. I was shocked when I heard the news since he did not seem badly hurt.
The moral of the story: call the guy for such things now.

Old news, and GM has a fix (which has been applied to my ATS and many others). Lehto can be pretty annoying at times now that he is making his living from lemon law cases. He was much more interesting when he was a historian on things like the Chrysler turbine car.
In more recent news, here is a similar suit filed just this week against Ford:

One month after his 87th birthday and testing Covid positive, my father passed away on Sunday. We had hope for recovery, as he moved from hospital ER to general population; then from Covid section of Rehab to non-covid section which seemed to indicate improvement. Alas, no.
My brother and I are consoling ourselves with the belief that had he recovered (and not even sure what "recovery" would have looked like), he would not have been physically able to live the life he would have wanted. Phone calls in the last week were very tough, he was emotionally quite down, saying, "This is no way to live."
RIP to a very good man.
My sincerest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to you and your family on your father’s passing. It is always difficult to comprehend why life is so fleeting as we age and observe our loved ones pass on so unexpectedly and for the wrong reasons. I experienced that when my Dad passed 5 years ago. I can empathize with you because we seem so incapable of changing the course of life for our loved ones as well as ourselves.

As for DIY projects I had a water line to the refrigerator and an outside hose bib in need of repair.
The plumber is just finishing up. I’ve come to the point where soldering pipes in the cold and crawling under the sink are best hired out. Same with oil changes.
I’ll probably still do stuff that reasonable people won’t do for any price, like climbing on the roof to trim branches.

However....lately I am more willing to “call the guy”
Case in point. Not even three months in and the two year old dishwasher is dead. It was acting funny toward the end of the cycle, then not finishing drying and finally would only work if you reset the breaker. During the day you would hear it beeping just sitting idle. Quick Google finds its most likely the main board and/or the control panel. $300 in parts for a $400 builder’s grade dishwasher.
So... we bought a new Kitchen Aid and they wanted $150 to deliver, install and take the old one away. For me it was worth the money not having to deal with it.
For those interested, since we love dishwasher talk.. this is the one we got. Went with Kitchen Aid (Whirlpool) since we loved the Kenmore branded Whirlpool at the old house.

I’m not happy with the GE Profile Fridge. The part between the 2 doors doesn’t close automatically. A part of the freezer handle broke off, & the drain gets clogged with ice often. We have to take everything out of the freezer & take the ice out of the bottom. It’s a pain.

I can replace outlets, switches and light fixtures or ceiling fans. Stuff where the wires are already there. Same with plumbing. No problem putting on a replacement faucet either as long as the connections are already there.

The old years don't fall off the report, the newer years keep getting added on.
I get those reports every year(might be age related) and I'm pretty sure only the top 35 earning years count.
@explorerx4 is correct. Earnings years don’t fall off, but they use your 35 highest years. However, previous years have multipliers to account for inflation.
