You didn't even include "suicide" as a possible cause for any gun violence in Canada in your earlier post. That seems to be a common problem in the U.S. as well. I think those guns in Britain are new and only to fight things like international terrorism and to be used in certain situations....but, police had bobby sticks up until a decade or so ago.

I'm not being critical, the U.S. was founded on the principle to take up arms for protection. I get it, just makes you wonder when you see Dinos figures for Europe and Canada which is very similar in so many ways.

@driver100 I was just wondering if that 80% was an apples to apples comparison with the percentage in the Justice Dept quote. Whenever I hear my nephew vent his frustration with math statistics I remember the way Lewis Carroll described the four branches of arithmetic as "ambition, distraction, uglification and derision."

@dino001 The Bobby cop history is significant right down to the blue uniform chosen so that people could easily tell police apart from soldiers. But now we see more troop deployment to police civil unrest on both sides of the pond.

And on the topic of statistics, NHTSA won't have the full numbers until later in the year but traffic deaths went up despite covid lockdowns in 2020. Hmm. Empty highways. Less enforcement.

In Ohio, state troopers have issued 2,200 tickets since April [2020] for driving more than 100 mph, a 61% increase over the same time period a year ago. The highest ticketed speed was 147 mph in the Cincinnati area.

Same up here, way less traffic and way more tickets and way more for speeding. It seems that when the roads are empty people get carried away. Also, when you are cooped up most of the day, and the kids are home all day, and people are under pressure, something happens when you get in your car and see wide open spaces.

I am sort of curious of how it matches what you said. You said that there were 266 homicides, I corrected that as 660 homicides and 260 of them were done with a gun. How does that match up with the 80% figure? Total deaths by guns was never mentioned.

Helped a dealership out of a jam yesterday. They were up against a deadline from an out of town buyer on a Tahoe swap from Cincinnati to Columbus (and back). Happy to help as long as I didn’t have to drive in the dark.

Helped out...made some nice “take me out to dinner” money for my GF, and was happy to have done it.

Tahoes.....I owned one over 15 years ago. Liked it. Never had any issue with it. Big, comfy, imposing, rule the road feel.

The new one, while different, isn’t too far off the same mark. It handles a little better. Is a little smoother. Has a lot more tech. But, overall it’s the same vehicle Chevy has been making for decades.

The big change is sticker shock. The ones I transported were “LT” models. Pretty well loaded up. But, with stickers knocking on the $70K+ door, it’s a good $25K more than the “LTZ” I had. No thanks!

The AP article llinked is in the Dayton Daily Nothing newspaper and it's an AP story without facts like where in Cincy was the 147 mph clocking made. As for the Columbus quote from a lady about Highway 315 and high speeds..., WOW. 315 snakes along the river and past TOSU campus to the northern beltway. A few strips are straight enough for high speed, but frankly, after 5 years of going to and fro TOSU campus, I think these speeds are somewhat normal for the folks on 315!!! They drive like Hades, at least part of the folks. Scared me at times as I went between the Microcenter Store and my son's apartments and dorm around campus.

Re Cincy: I have seen various foreign cars of the ilk Maserati and Lamborghini and others running a chase on I75 north of the circle freeway with light traffic in 4 lanes. I just know the sounds from the engines brought back memories of the cars of the 60s and 70s with engines I could never have.

How’s the bad eye doing?

Another surgery Tuesday to remove the oil holding the retina in place and replacing with a gas bubble in its place. Hoping I don’t have to go back to having my head down all day and sleeping facedown. We’ll see.

I'm always skeptical of high speed claims - I recall some warriors claiming a Hyundai Excel was being chased at 117 mph, sure buddy.

Fun thing about WA, most don't speed much even on empty roads. This is heaven for slowpokes

Let’s get back to VCR’s. I found my receipt for my first VCR. I bought it in September 1983 at an electronics fare sponsored by an appliance store in the area at the local mall. It was a Panasonic PV 320 and it cost just under 500 bucks. The reason I bought it was that it accepted input from a cable box. Prior to that VCR’s could only handle over the air input and when they first came out I seem to remember they cost over a grand, like $1,200 and more. I wasn’t paying that so I waited.

This thing was a beast, weighed quite a bit compared to the light weights that followed. And it was a beast to program too. It had 12 tuners that had to be programmed with its own thumb wheel AND it didn’t have on screen programming. You had to follow the manual to set it and wait to see the picture on the TV for that tuner position. Then for the selected time you had to see an LED appear to show it accepted the start and stop time you just made. MAN, was that ever archaic but it worked and it worked until I bought a Sanyo about 10 years later that cost less than $150 with on screen programming that accepted whatever input you gave it from your cable box. For me that was the cats meow and I was really living in the new world.

FWIW, when I got that Panasonic in ‘83 I also bought 2 high quality TDK VHS tapes that cost 20 bucks each and that was a pretty good price back then. Who did I think I was spending dough like that? Mrs. j thought I went off my rocker so did my Sons. The only difference was they were impressed whereas their Mother wasn’t.

No just saying that depending on how they measured that 117 MPH it is feasible. Based on my research the Excel most likely could get into the triple digits but not by much and it would take time to get there. Now if they got the 117 MPH off the speedometer then add an error of up to 10 MPH on the high side which would put it in the range that my research has shown (top speed of 109). It would require a long straight flat highway to do it but it is feasible without strong tailwinds steep hills or semis.

I took that witness account of terrifying traffic on 315 as a typical drive time road report even though it happened in the context of covid era with fewer drivers out there. If you've driven Polaris Parkway on the far north side then you've probably already seen how often some drivers there like to overtake traffic at high speed regardless of time or conditions.

In a 1987 Excel? What's terminal velocity dropped out of a plane at 25000 feet? I guess I'd need to see anything over 100 to believe it. The claim was routinely mocked back in the day, and makes me skeptical of claims from similar sources today.

De-governed, with the big engine helped by an 8 speed transmission, I could pretty much believe it in ideal circumstances. I think a lot of modern non-tuned cars are governed to ~130.

I am pretty certain this was our first VCR - I remember the design pretty clearly. My parents also had a monitor-style TV (maybe a LXI, my dad liked Sears) to go with it.

I removed the 155 mph governor on the MS3. It could maybe hit 175 downhill. My Club Sport had a ludicrous governor that kicked in at 116 mph; the Conforti chip fixed that, but even then 130 mph was about all it would do. The 2er still has the 155 limit. If I keep it I’ll eventually remove it.

I don't even know where you can go that fast. On the longest straightaway at NJ Motorsports, hitting the entry perfect and pushing the braking zone later than I should, I hit MAYBE 142, if the speedo was to be believed, in my tuned 135i. I think when I drove that 911 GT3 RS at Extreme Experience in Englishtown, NJ the fastest I got on the back straight was 140.

141 at the end of the straight at KY Speedway in an M8 Competition Coupe. (617 hp) But, we were restricted on entry speed by the instructor car we were following.

I hit 147 in a stock car on the same track (Tri-oval). I feel like I could have done that in the BMW with a little more rope.

They didn’t mention what kind of car clocked that 147 mph but I bet I could match that (just before going airborne).

oh, there are some nice straight stretches on I195 where you can max it out. Just hope you don't pass a trooper. Or hit a deer.

but that is why I never concerned myself with a governor, since they were always well above any speed I was ever going to risk on a public road. And I never had a car that would be out on a track.

The fastest I’ve ever driven a car is a little over 130 mph done in a 1967 Plymouth Fury ex-Trooper pursuit car with a 440 4 barrel. As I recall it was pretty stable at that speed which still surprises me given the aerodynamics of those cars.

I still remember the dotted lines becoming solid.

We had some real wimps in my group- scared absolutely to death. Neither my son or I saw much more than 120 mph.

155 is a common governed limit for performance cars, I think. My old E55 was governed at that.

My top on an empty public highway is 125. As you said, you have to be concerned about what could happen out there. I certainly won’t do it with other cars around because you can’t trust them. So between other cars, potential deer crossings, and Smoky hiding spots, it is just impossible.

Living here in Illinois where there is a lot of flat farmland there are a lot of nice long two lane roads that are straight and relatively flat. I can think of a few straight and flat stretches that are two miles or more long, lightly traveled with no obstacles. Get there early in the growing season or after the harvest and you have virtually unlimited sight lines to see any officer or oncoming cross traffic miles away.

295 south of 42 and north of the Commodore Barry bridge in the very early morning is where you can hit some serious speed.
