@qbrozen, yes I do have the 220 in the LR and I’d have to check the breaker and wire. I am aware not to run both at the same time. Not ready to pull the trigger quite yet. Thank you!
ETA: This video was helpful in outlining the various levels you can take it to.

Thanks @ab348 and @kyfdx for the info.
And to the comment about only old people being interested -- the buyer was a young man in his early 20's.

OK, here goes:
Most Level 2 chargers require a dedicated 40 amp circuit wired with #8 copper wire. But, your electric dryer probably has a 30 amp dedicated circuit wired with #10 copper wire which is the approved standard for wiring electric dryers.
If you can live with a reduced charging rate (around 75% of a Level 2 charger) you can charge from you existing dryer circuit. You should install a transfer switch to do it without the fear of someone trying to use the dryer at the same time. And yes, a transfer switch properly installed, is ABSOLUTELY safe.
You could do it without a transfer switch but if the car is charging and someone turns on the dryer all that will happen is the breaker will trip which is what it is supposed to do when the circuit is overloaded. The house won’t burn down and no one will get electrocuted. But I, myself, wouldn’t do it without a transfer switch.
Of course you could always bite the bullet and install a Level 2 charger but like I said if you can live with a reduced charging rate, use your existing dryer circuit with a transfer switch.

All fun and games until someone does this with an old Federal Pacific panel with breakers that don’t trip !!

Didn’t I say PROPERLY installed? Trying to add on to an outdated panel is about as safe as putting a penny in the fuse box instead of replacing the fuse. You can’t get something for nothing but folks keep trying. Good luck with that.

Thanks all…
You still have to consider the amperage and line for the 220V at that location may not be up to spec for a charger.

Yeah, I’d be surprised if there was a 220 line behind a gas dryer unless someone converted it to gas.

Later we relocated laundry to the 2nd floor. Now I have a stray 220 outlet, regular outlet, and all the drain pipes in the basement.

Picked up my car this morning from the detailing place that applied a ceramic coating to all surfaces - 3 coats of ceramic chemicals and warranted for 5 years. They used the new 3M treatments for cleaning, taking out surface imperfections and microscopic scratches. Car looks great.
Glad I had it done a month or so prior to the trees budding and excreting sap - especially the closest tree which is some specie of olive that emits a reddish brown sap that makes a mess of my hood and top. Also good for protecting the finish from bird droppings which are quite frequent near trees.
He charged me $1100 which includes 7% sales tax.
The first thing I noticed was how shiny and smooth the surface of the car is now. The guy told me to stay away from automatic car washes and have the car hand washed with mild soap. I’ll update everyone as time goes by and share with you if the application was worth that much money.
I have to bring the car back to him once a year so he can apply a booster of ceramic coating. He said he would do it for $100 a year.

One of the things that is rather fun is watching the very old first few seasons of This Old House that Roku offers, from the Bob Vila era. The show could not be more different from what it has now become, not surprisingly. The first season with the Dorchester house was pretty haphazard and crudely produced, but the second season was very ambitious and while it still wasn't very sophisticated in terms of production, they did throw in some crane and helicopter shots and the building itself was very interesting. The last couple of days I've been watching the 3rd season, which couldn't be more different.
This one was mostly all Bob with a bit of Norm and Rich thrown in. Probably because they were close to losing their shirts on the season 2 project, which didn't sell at first, they were very frugal on this one, with Bob doing a lot of the work himself. The idea was to buy for $65K a small mid-'50s tract bungalow in Woburn MA (36 Robinson Rd if you're interested, though it no longer looks like what it did back in '82) and expand/improve it on a $25K budget. It is almost laughable in the context of today's home improvement programming how he did things. A tiny pink bathroom where he had a new floor installed and replaced the ugly little sink and vanity with a wall-hung sink that Rich took out of a house they were working on. Homemade kitchen cabinets that were finished with Formica rather than being painted or stained. He kept the existing fridge, stove and kitchen sink but had the fridge resprayed for $75. The main part of the project was connecting the house to an existing garage via a new greenhouse-style breezeway entry and turning the garage into the new living room. I didn't like the result much and the outside in particular looked pretty awful in the end but even in '82 $25K only went so far.
What I found fascinating is looking at it on Streetview today. It bears no resemblance to what Bob left behind. New owners at some point put on a full 2nd floor, redid the exterior in a more conventional style, and did a lot of work on the grounds. The houses on either side still look much like what they did in '82, though the neighborhood in general looks a bit more upscale now and there are even a few newer McMansions where little bungalows once stood. Bob's house that he bought for $65K in '82 is valued according to various sites at between $800K and $900K. Even the mostly untouched little bungalows on either side are not far off that number. Incredible. No wonder old guys are buying new Corvettes.

I had fun reading about your TV watching episode....some interesting comments and amazing how much house prices have soared. In Hamilton the average price of a home 15 years ago was $218,000, and today it is $1.1 million!
My question is, don't you do streaming on Netflix or Amazon? It is hard to watch regular TV when there is streaming. We don't watch violence or Super Hero stuff, but shows like Halt and Catch Fire, Suits, Billions are clever and entertaining....practically commercial free and you don't have to wait a week for the next episode.
And, who is doing WORDLE? I haven't tried it yet but Mrs D100 is addicted. Probably a good way to exercise the brain.

If you’re looking for something to do rather than just watching old episodes of This Old House, come over to our old house built in 1966 before you miss the fun of doing some demo.
No, we don’t whack the kitchen cabinets with a sledge so that we have to sweep up thousands of splintered pieces. We do it the old fashioned way by removing a few screws and carrying them, in tact, to the dumpster or maybe even selling them like we did with flip #3.
While I haven’t bought a new Vette yet, I think I could if I wanted to squeeze myself into one.
Hurry up the fun won’t last forever.
