I drove more miles last week than I have in 6 months, 310. It included three miserable evenings of rush hour stop and go traffic commute home from the office. If you may be familiar with the Charlotte area, one evening, it was raining, took me 45 minutes to go from I-277 to the Tyvola rd exit on I-77. Brutal. That leg normally takes 20 min. I filled up yesterday and by manual calculation the Passat averaged 34.2 mpg. That was a pleasant surprise.

We saw Chris Stapleton last night at the Hard Rock in Atlantic City. Wow! Is all I have to say. Just an incredible performance. I knew he could sing, but never realized the guitarist he is. Two hour jam session. No openers, no breaks , no gimmicks. I’ll be going again.
Going to see him would make my wife very happy.. thanks for the review. Geez.. he is here in August at Riverbend (outdoor amphitheater). Sold out. Resale tickets: $100 lawn, $375 cheapest seat.
Call me cheap but I wouldn’t pay those prices to see me perform and I know you guys wouldn’t either. jmonroe

I do feel the same I can think of better things I can spend my money on than a concert. But then again the concert experience is something I truly hate.

When I bought this last ZTR mower, I wound up putting it on American Express. I wanted to write a check and take it home with me, but there was no one working that day at the dealership who could authorize accepting a check. But they could take Amex, which probably cost them 2.5% of $3,400 or about $85. I have a HomeDepot credit card for the very reason mentioned above, they gave me about $100 off on a major purchase I was making, so why the heck not? And they send me coupons in the mail, I've got one here for $25 off my next purchase of $150 or more if I charge it on their credit card. Which will happen, never doubt it. I guess they just expect you to run a balance and let them make beaucoup money in interest charges.

We only use our HomeDepot credit card when they offer interest free financing. Then we take full advantage of it. Bought a snow blower and some other stuff last fall an got six months interest free financing.

It doesn't take much to issue a card, especially if you're issuing a temporary card while a permanent card is issued. The tax office I work at has the option to issue a tax refund on a credit card and all it takes is inputting the card number onto the computer while I finish up the return.

However, people are increasing their usage of digital payment platforms like Apple Pay, Google Pay, Cash App etc. and relying less upon the physical cards so they are thinning the number of branches that have those machines.

I have an Amazon Visa card, they paid me $150 when I obtained it. Seriously, they added $150 to my Amazon account when I was instantly approved for the card. I was going to just cut it up as soon as it arrived, but they're giving me 5% back on Amazon purchases made with this card, so I just keep it in a drawer and leave it tied to my Amazon account. American Express, for whatever reasons, really wants me to "tap" with my Amex card. They've sent me two emails stating that if I "tap" with the card 3 times in the next 30 days, they will give me a $5 statement credit. Except no one seems to have a credit card reader which actually works with the "tap" feature.

I suspect they want the merchants to update / upgrade their card readers, and they figure if the customers complain to the merchants then the upgrades will happen.

When I was in business it was cash only, except for paper checks. The old people loved it but the youngsters were often frustrated as many didn’t know what cash was for.

Our small business is credit card only - everything is purchased through our web portal, or when the parents check out after a party or event (50% deposit up front).

Very rarely, my wife and daughter will get a cash tip.

Took a few days to get the portal connected to our bank account, but now everything is working smoothly.

Chris Stapleton, Willie Nelson and Cheryl Crow are playing an outdoor show at the U of KY football stadium on April 23rd. Was cancelled for Covid twice, last April and 2020 also. Hope they have better weather than yesterday when it snowed. Tickets go from $106 in upper more distant areas to $1260 on the field in front of stage.
Snake, I believe Waylon would have been glad to hang out with Stapleton. Look up a song called Scarecrow in the Garden. Very dark lyrics but a great Stapleton song.

That's a pretty good lineup (Sheryl, BTW).

We won a drawing for Garth Brooks tickets at PBS in Cincinnati, at a benefit, a couple of years ago (Feb 2020). Of course it was postponed, then postponed again, and eventually canceled. Our tickets were radio station promo tickets, so no cash value. ($95 ea. value).

So, now, they sold them all again, only we don't have tickets.

Back 3 or 4 years ago, I was doing my DJ thing at a birthday party for a friend of mine. The lady is my age, around 70, but it was a very mixed crowd, age wise. Her 3 daughters, with husbands, and grandkids, and etc. I was trying to mix up the music, and was fairly successful at getting people up to dance. A middle aged woman (40?) asked me to play Tennessee Whiskey, so I cued up the George Jones version. Mind you, I like the original by David Allan Coe but I assumed she meant the newer version by George Jones.

She got rather upset, and argued with me that I was NOT playing Tennessee Whiskey. I looked it up, and some guy named Chris Stapelton whom I had never heard of had a huge hit with his recording of the song. Which does not sound at all, even remotely, like the David Allan Coe or George Jones version, although it is supposedly the same song.

But it is a good song, and fits the bill for a “country song” and a “slow song”, so I play it fairly often now when I DJ.

After being retired for several years, I went back to work in late 2010. This was downtown, in a huge office building. I noticed when I ate in the cafeteria that most of the women would come down from their office carrying two phones and one credit card. No purse, no billfold, no ID, no cash. By the time I retired again in 2020, many of them were now down to just the two phones, no credit card.

I used cash for the longest time, preferring to pay that way. But I finally switched over when I started trying to compute how much I spent, and on what, in order to get a handle on just how much I needed to retire comfortably. Keeping track of where and how you spend your money is easier if you're using a credit card.

But to this day, I don't like to leave the house without my billfold and a couple of hundred in cash. Some people think this makes you more likely to be robbed, but from what I've seen / heard /read the bad people are just as likely to kill you for $2 as for $200.

I do the exact same thing. Any fixed monthly (mortgage, cable, cars, insurance) all on auto pay. Utilities always manual pay. A buddy of mine got a $6000 gas bill. That would suck on auto pay to have corrected.

Oh my car buying stories are pretty boring now. For the first time in many years we are down to two cars. Both sit in the garage most of the time.

2016 Honda CRV EXL. Bought new has 17,000 miles.
2020 Honda CRV EX. Also bought new. Has a whopping 3800 miles on it.

No old beaters or collector cars now. Got burned badly with unexpected repair bills on the pristine 2017 Lexus ES that I bought from the original owner. With labor rates at 150.00 hr. Even a relatively "minor" repair is 1000.00 or more. Nobody " repairs" things anymore. Just replace at huge expense. Traded it in on the 2020 CRV. At this point my old high volume store has almost ZERO inventory. Never thought I would EVER see a market like this! Used cars are through roof now too!

I seldom carry cash these days unless I am going to my barber or a handful of other places that only take cash. Aside from reducing exposure to losing it somehow, I feel less guilty when coming across the ever-present panhandlers at traffic lights and parking lots, which is a problem nobody here seems willing to deal with.

But when it comes to unexpected expenses, vet bills can be really bad. My oldest dog, 11 years, has pneumonia and I had to take her in to the emergency vet hospital this morning. Their estimate is around $5k for two days in the hospital. Just when I thought I had a handle on my expenses.

Oh, well, just means my granddaughters will inherit a little less.

Our youngest doxie had IVDD when she was 3 or 4 years old. I know the surgery to repair her back was north of $5K alone, then there were physical therapy sessions for a few months after.

She's doing great, now, at age 11.

I had a boneheaded move yesterday. We went to take my daughter out to dinner where she is in college. We got back to her sorority house and I handed her her Jeep key.

She calls this morning saying that the key doesn’t work - I handed her MY Jeep key. So I got to make the trip again this afternoon to swap keys. My wife gets to make the trip again tomorrow to take her to a doctor appointment as she had ankle surgery and is still in a boot. (Daughter has 8 am class tomorrow so needs her car- it did not seem right to ask my wife to go early to get the key up there and wait around until her classes were done)

Interesting factoid- there are two (German) buzz bombs in the US. One is in the Smithsonian and the other is by the courthouse in Greencastle IN. Who would have thought…

that is one reason we aren't in a hurry to get another dog. might consider it after we finally relocate. But may just get out fix taking care of our granddog. And if I really want one in the house for a while, will just foster again.

Hate using a c c but most times, it's just easier. Have one card just for auto issues/petrol which I payoff after each use & another that I pay once a month. Always have a $20 bill in my wallet just in case and hardly ever use the debit. Planning on sitting down tomorrow to make a list of all my cards, credit limits, to give to my oldest so she'll be able to cancel them once I do pass. Have way too many & might cancel a few. Every so often, get notice that for lack of use, one particular card has been closed but never one I use at all, so not a big deal.
Yesterday, got a check from Chase for something, so plan to stop by the bank to cash it in the morning. An unexpected surprise. Have always stressed to the kids to put that $20 away in your wallet & forget about it as one day, you will need it. Get flack about it but, they all seem to do it. Luckily, we've always lived under our means, something they've all learned to do. Still that way on most things but on the recent 55" t v purchase, splurged & just "went for it" as both the sales guy & my kid said to do. And you know what, they were so right! It's the best set we've ever owned, a Sony, with fantastic color. Have yet to adjust the settings as it's just perfect! Guess as I age, am starting to ease up a bit on the wallet and again, just less I'll be leaving the three of them!

Nothing major. The passenger window came off it's track requiring the entire window to be replaced. Power steering pump started leaking. Needed brakes and rotors. Air conditioning quit working. I should have never bought it with 150,000 miles but I did from the original owner with all service records. It was a wonderful car in most respects but it just annoyed me to death so I dumped it.

Boy, ain’t that the truth. I hear there have been armed holdups of Uber drivers even though the transaction is all handled on phones.

As to retirement income, if you run out of money before the next payday you probable can’t afford to retire.

I switched over to using the credit card back in the mid 90’s. So much easier than going to the ATM every time I turned around. I rarely have more that 50 bucks in my wallet like I do now but that’s what is left over from the $300 dollars I took when we went on vacation last August.

I’ve said a few times if someone holds me up they are going to kill me for wasting their time. Maybe more would save me.

Oh my car buying stories are pretty boring now. For the first time in many years we are down to two cars. Both sit in the garage most of the time.

2016 Honda CRV EXL. Bought new has 17,000 miles.
2020 Honda CRV EX. Also bought new. Has a whopping 3800 miles on it.

Even a relatively "minor" repair is 1000.00 or more. Nobody " repairs" things anymore. Just replace at huge expense. Traded it in on the 2020 CRV. At this point my old high volume store has almost ZERO inventory. Never thought I would EVER see a market like this! Used cars are through roof now too!

I was driving past a big multi line foreign dealer today. Everything from Honda to BMW to Mercedes and more. They had recently bought the property next door and paved it to hold inventory. Maybe 1000 feet or more of road frontage.

Today there were probably less than 20 cars parked there.

Once they start building new cars again, there aren't going to be any low mileage used cars around....unless isell puts his CRVs on the market.

My company isn’t selling them until about 60k miles and very few of them at that. On a three year old car that’s not very low. We used to sell them with about 30k after 9-18 months.

I feel fortunate to have found my last car with only 29k miles.

Usually take the bike and with only a 3 gallon tank I usually fill up at least twice and I at times go to places that she would have liked to go and she will complain that I didn't take her. Or she will complain that I rode three hours one way for a beer.

I worked with a guy who used cash for any purchase that didn’t involve his wife. He stated the same reason as you

I use three cards, a BMW Mastercard, a BoA Visa Rewards, and a Target Visa(5% off at Target).
