Which makes the road in question the unopened portion of the 210. I've got a book on the history of the freeways in LA, and a couple of pages were dedicated to the filming of CHiPS - they couldn't complete the highway due to legal delays, so the production company made arrangements to film on the stretches that were done.
Not sure if that car in the middle is a Beetle, could be a 40s American car as it appears to have a split windshield. I do see something foreign looking peeking in at far left, rear fender - maybe MGA.

IIRC the Sunliner was a convertible, that one is a four-post coupe and it's a '56. The one that looks like a VW appears to have divided front glass; possibly it's a Volvo PV544.
I have to tell you that this picture really threw me. At first I thought the front row and many of the other cars we 1955MY but then I noticed the turn signals on the Ford which make it a 1956 model. I can't tell a '55 Thunderbird from a '56 unless it has the outside spare which you wouldn't expect on a race car.
Speaking of racing what are they doing? I thought racing on the Daytona sand would have been over by the mid 1950s. Another mystery, the white something on the right front of the black T-Bird and the pink one on the left.

The Daytona Speedway opened in 1959; prior to that, they raced on the beach in one direction, and an asphalt access road in the other.

The Sunliner is a convertible. It’s black at the left edge, in front of a tutone green with white top car. You must have thought I meant the red and white 56 on the front row. The continental kit was standard on the 56, but available on the 55 and 57 Thunderbirds. From the front, above the grill, the 55 has crossed flags while the 56 has the Tbird emblem.

There existed and still exists a performance air intake system for those T-Birds which consists of dual "pipes" which extend from the air filter housing forward to the front grille area. The driver taped on some type of material to act as a filter to keep sand from getting into the dual air inlets.
It looks like the honchos at Chrysler Corp told the stylists responsible for Plymouth to cool it on the fins and maybe they over-reacted. The result was perhaps the ugliest American car ever made, a styling disaster from every angle
Volvo 142 of the vintage we had (though ours was a 144). On the right a light colored AMC Hornet. I had one of them too. Next to a cross-eyed Econoline.
