Witness testimony is notoriously unreliable which is why I told the cop that I didn’t actually see the point of contact becau

As it turned out he told me that my recollections matched the story that they were piecing together.

    ...
    ,
That’s my job, to forge the blade. To sharpen it. To use it without mercy or conscience. To be the truth in a place where everybody lies."

-Excerpt from The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly
I have read back through books by Connelly, John Sandford, Baldacci, Grisham and a couple of others.
The Harry (Hieronymus) Bosch group of books are my favorite.

But I just finished Boys of Biloxi by John Grisham. Tremendous!!! Involves a District Attorney, not to spoil the building of the plot with too much info. I think Grisham writes the best books; they are so well woven that it's hard to find any flaws. James Patterson uses cowriters: I think they write and he puts his name of the cover with them. Sort of like reading the JV.

Used to like Stuart Woods, but he went downhill.

I really like the Jack Reacher novels, I have read all of them, twice now. And the John Sandford "Prey" novels. I like some of the John Grisham novels, but not all. I think his earlier books are better than what he has been doing recently.

My Genesis G90 just turned 10,000 miles after 20 months of ownership. Still rides and handles as good as the day I drove it off the new car lot.

The best investment I ever made in a new car was to have 2 applications of ceramic coating applied to the exterior of the vehicle. The company that applied the ceramic coating used 3M ceramics. I have never waxed the car and I have the car washed by hand by a guy that charges me 19.99 for the exterior and 39.99 for exterior and interior. The reason I did it was because my car is parked outside 24/7 under some huge olive tree that excretes some sort of brownish stuff every spring along with sap all year long. Lots of bird turds here as well. The finish is like a mirror!

I guess I have to bring it back to the company that applied the ceramic coating in March or April. They inspect the coating and finish once each year to determine if another coat is necessary. If it is necessary, they only charge $200 and takes 24-36 hours to cure. The original application of 2 coats cost me $1100. But when I considered the benefits of the ceramic coatings and the fact that intend to keep the car until the warranty expires (5 years - 60,000 miles), it became a no-brainer.

Still extremely happy with the G90. <3

Like me you’ll run out of years before you run out of miles on your warranty. I wonder if there’s a warranty you can buy that extends the years only.

I don't understand the slowdowns when downloading the updates in Win10.
I have a 500 Mbps internet and even when I suffered with Frontier's 3.0 Mbps
access, I barely noticed the downloading even for the full updates. It took a while
and MS was sending it in small chunks every few seconds.

Also in Win10 update page, there is a setting to delay downloading updates. I think
up to 7 days could be selected.

Myself I'd leave the laptop on and it will do auto updating overnight. I think that occurs
even in "sleep" model. That takes the downloading out of the work period.

Another options is on the Updates and Security page where the delay updates is a choice, there's a choice to select the active time for your computer use. The updates wouldn't download and install until after that time--I assume the laptop needs to be left ON or SLEEP mode. Also next to that ws to
automatically adjust hours for this device base on the activity when you're on.

Updates usually come on Tuesday by afternoon eastern which is when the PNW where MS
is wakes up.I do recall though that after downloading, the installing step does use a lot of disk read/write and CPU...

When I’ve looked they offered a matrix of varying years and miles. So you could get 5/100, or 8/100, etc.

About driving with one foot or two.
    For most people, driving using one foot is the way they learned to drive and that is probably best for most people. However, there is a case to be made that driving with 2 feet may cause fewer accidents;

A handful of experts, such as retired UCLA psychologist and ergonomics researcher Richard A. Schmidt, believe using two feet can solve a big problem: crashes that happen when a driver accidentally hits the gas pedal instead of the brake. Schmidt says these crashes are far more common than most of us realize — and the government estimates there are about 16,000 of them per year.

However, pedal error is a surprisingly controversial topic, and others say that many of these crashes actually result from cars' defective electronic systems and sticky gas pedals. But the bottom line is that this sort of error does cause at least some crashes. Schmidt and others argue that two foot driving could be a solution.

The most often-cited reason that drivers of automatic cars should still use one foot is the idea that, if you use both feet and accidentally step on both pedals at once, you can do serious damage to your car — specifically, putting strain on the torque converter, transmission fluid, and brake fluid.

This was certainly true in the past. But after a series of high-profile defect-related unintended acceleration crashes — such as the ones that plagued Toyota vehicles in 2009, caused by floor mats and sticky gas pedals — automakers widely adopted a new technology that solves the problem.

These brake override systems automatically detect if both pedals are pressed down, and cut power to the engine if they are. They're now standard for the vast majority of new cars. And with both this technology and automatic transmission in place, there's not an obvious downside to using your left foot to brake.

If I am in heavy traffic and edging up slowly I prefer to use 2 feet. I don't think there is a right way or a wrong way, it is what you are more comfortable with. You would think the safety people could measure reaction times and come up with a more definitive answer.

    https://www.vox.com/2015/7/1/8877583/two-foot-driving-pedal-error

Paying attention to your driving will do a lot more to avoid accidents than how many feet you use.
The type of driver to hit the wrong pedal is beyond redemption and help, I'm afraid.

Speaking of which, the latest NHTSA website data for 2020 shows the percentage of stat padding is up from 49% to 53% on promoting the "speed kills" myth. Click the second dot in the blue box.

    https://www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/speeding

That's an astounding number of idiots that don't wear seat belts that cause fatalities. More than half the data set now comes from these folks, and I know in CA we have a 98% compliance rate with seat belt laws.

How high will the rate have to go before the NHTSA corrects their erroneous assumption that idiots that speed without seat belts belong in the same group of hazard as conscientious speeders?

    Logic Formula
    1. If you don't wear a seat belt while in a moving car you are an idiot.
    2. If you are an idiot you are highly likely to be a bad driver.
    3. If you speed while being a bad driver you are a double idiot.
    4. If you are all of the above it's reasonable to conclude you contribute heavily to the fatality statistics.
    5. It is NOT reasonable for the NHTSA to take the 2 or 3% of the population that doesn't wear their seat belt, and causes 53% of the fatalities, to ignore that fact and keep promoting "speed-related" numbers, just because they are bigger scarier numbers.

And to add insult to injury, the Gov't wastes tax payer dollars misleading people with:

    https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/nhtsa-launches-new-campaign-remind-drivers-speeding-wrecks-lives

But in the bullet points they admit, quote "Drinking and speeding is the deadliest combination. Of the drivers involved in fatal crashes, 37% were speeding and had a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher."

So 37% are drunks, and 53% are idiots not wearing a seat belt. How many are left? Are 37% of all drivers on the road at any given time always drunk to make the sample size equivalent and the reported figures relevant and true?

How many of the drunks are idiots that don't wear their seat belts? How many of the idiots that don't wear their seat belt also drunk?

Yes, all good points and I forgot how I do it. I usually get a notice, Windows wants to give me updates, it will restart my computer now and do it or I can do it later. I do it before I shut it down, or leave the area, I do a restart at that time, it doesn't interfere at all.
Had I known about processors I would have possibly gone with the newer one, but, the Celeron has been around since 1998, they probably worked most of the bugs out of it.

The problem with the Celeron has nothing to do with "bugs", just a lack of "horsepower". If you stay on top of the Windows updates, you can have them install when you're not actively using the computer. But that doesn't work out well for most people, as they tend to only have the computer turned on when they are using it. Kudos to you if you're managing the situation successfully.

Currently, Celeron CPUs are the most popular processor in Chromebooks and it is more than powerful enough to browse the web and run Android Apps and Linux Apps.

@driver100 Congratulations on the purchase. I'm glad it worked for you
and I think you got a good choice.

I like to get keyboards that feel a little more like the IBM Selectric typewriters
from when I first learned to type. I think it's the range of motion and the feel
of the keys. So I'm always testing out the models like I'd want to order
from HP when I spend some time in Staples or OfficeDepot stores that
    stock the pricier models.

I'd buy the I5 or I3 for myself. I didn't buy either of the two that I use now; I
inherited them from my friends when they had troubles and replaced them.
But I believe the more powerful CPU's have stronger/faster interfaces with the
motherboards and faster firmware for the boards. But that's likely more
    than I usually need.

There are many many others who prefer "mechanical switch" keyboards which have the feel of the original IBM Selectric typewriters. "Cherry" is the manufacturer of the most popular models. The problem here is, these days most people have notebooks, sales of desktop computers are way down by comparison to notebooks. And the keyboard in a notebook is not easily replaced, and in most instances the only replacement that will fit is the OEM model.

That's why I like testing the feel of various keyboards on display models.

My favorite HP Pavilion laptop is several years old but has a keyboard with some movement to the key strokes.
The other lapto has a different feel to the keyboard and doesn't have the ease-of-typing that I like.
It feels better than some fo the "flatter" keyboards, but not as good as my favorite. It's all personal choice.

I read through all the Jack Reacher novels that I could get at my library. When I said I'd gone through all those others, I tried to reread them in order. It's interesting to do that.

What I like about the Reacher novels:

    1. Some of them are written in the first person, others in the 3rd person
    2. The timeline jumps around - some of the books are true sequels to those immediately preceding it, others go back to when Reacher was still active duty US Army

I've also been reading Martin Cruz Smith, most the Inspector Arkady Renko books.
Gorky Park is the most well known of those.

I was also doing that, before I retired. Before the pandemic and work-from-home, I had a company notebook on the desk in my office, with a docking station, keyboard, mouse, and two 24 inch monitors. Just drop the notebook onto the docking station, push one button, and you were in business. We were given notebooks instead of desktops so that we could take them home, and work remotely when needed. I didn't work very much remotely, before the pandemic, as I was contract. So I seldom took the notebook home. In March of 2020, when we started working 100% remotely, I asked if I could take home the docking station and monitors, and was told no. So I searched around ebay, and picked up a docking station for $25, and two 24 inch monitors at Goodwill set me back about $40, and I was in business.

Most people who have a personal computer (versus a company computer), have a notebook these days because they don't want to give up the space for a desktop, or even a big monitor and separate keyboard. They use the notebook from their couch, or easy chair, or bed, or worst case, kitchen table. And put it away in the closet when not in use.

I used to custom build desktops, over the years I have assembled hundreds of them. But not many these days, the last was nearly a year ago. Everyone wants a notebook.

Witness testimony is notoriously unreliable which is why I told the cop that I didn’t actually see the point of contact because my view was blocked by the car in front and that it was dark. I told him that my perception was that one car had run the light because I don’t remember it being green before the impact and it was definitely red after. But who knows if I was remembering it correctly.

As it turned out he told me that my recollections matched the story that they were piecing together.

    "Everybody lies.

Cops lie. Lawyers lie. Witnesses lie. The victims lie.

A trial is a contest of lies. And everybody in the courtroom knows this. The judge knows this. Even the jury knows this. They come into the building knowing they will be lied to. They take their seats in the box and agree to be lied to.

The trick if you are sitting at the defense table is to be patient. To wait. Not for any lie. But for the one you can grab onto and forge like hot iron into a sharpened blade. You then use that blade to rip the case open and spill its guts out on the floor.

That’s my job, to forge the blade. To sharpen it. To use it without mercy or conscience. To be the truth in a place where everybody lies."

-Excerpt from The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly
    F. Lee Bailey did exactly that so well to Detective Furman in the OJ trial.

External keyboards can be set up to work with laptops, either through Bluetooth or a USB cord.

My laptop can open up 360 degrees so when fully open the back of the screen is touching the bottom of the keyboard and it can be used as a tablet. But I have opened it 270 degrees so the keyboard would be pointed away from me and upside down and being a support for the screen. In that configuration I have used an external keyboard with it.

Wish I could get a rear camera installed in the C250, and lane change warnings would be nice too.
When I am backing up I expect to hear a beep when I get close, and the only thing I am going to hear if I don't do it right is a crash.
Same with lane change warning, I have to make sure there isn't a car beside me or in my blind spot, I am used to just seeing a red light when I can't change lanes.
I feel like I am living at the time of The Walton's. But, MrsD100 says it is a good way to keep up my skills.

Oh my God, you don't have a back up camera nor lane change warnings? So how is life living amongst the Amish?
It's just inhuman to expect someone to pay attention while driving.

Did I ever mention that I hate squirrels? I gathered up some leaves and got them onto a yard waste bag to move to the curb for pickup. Well here is what is now a pile of leaves. The squirrels came and tore the bag to pieces and ran off with the pieces leaving a near neat pile of leaves. In the picture you can see a piece of the bag behind the leaves.

Oh and did I tell you I hate squirrels?

Because they don't have any money to pay for it.

But why do they have to keep stealing my stuff?

Speaking of animals and theft, we got the lights up on the house last week for the holidays. We ended up doing a single strand of white on an Evergreen in the backyard for our viewing pleasure only. One of the boys came home from college last night so we fired up the lights for his arrival. We proceeded to the backyard but no lights. The timer was plugged in and on, so he went out to the tree, said they weren't plugged in. I told him to plug them in but he said there's nothing to plug in, the lights were gone. I'm thinking to myself, who would come into our backyard and take a strand of lights? My wife then remembered a post on Next Door about a buck in the area wandering around with a strand of lights caught in his antlers! I feel bad if that's the case, but I would think the extension cord would have been dragged out to the fence somewhere before becoming unplugged? Time for a backyard camera???

You’ve gotta take control of this situation and teach those squirrels a lesson. Wait until they have completed their house building then flip it to a family of chipmunks.

I’m using one right now on my work machine. It’s a laptop that just sits there closed all the time, with a keyboard and monitor plugged into it. So it’s basically a really flat desktop!

That's how I have my work laptop set up, as well. BT for both the mouse and keyboard, and a USB connection for the monitor and external webcam.

I like that home office. It has the right picture with the Buckeye logo from The Ohio State University!!!

My wife wouldn't let me have a setup like that in our house. I've got a single 24" monitor on a stand on a nice wooden desk, with my personal laptop sitting next to it.
You're not even in the game. My main workstation, which runs 24x7 and also works as a Plex server, has a 32 inch and a 27 inch monitor. On the opposite wall, my secondary setup has two 24 inch monitors. That secondary setup is where I used to log in to work, now used for setting up new computers, and trying out operating systems. In addition, there are two printers, an inkjet all-in-one and a color laser which was recently given to me. On any given day, I may also have a small table set up in the middle of the room with a notebook that I'm working on.

And lest I forget, there is a 32 inch TV hanging on one wall for watching college football on Saturdays. That is the only sport I follow anymore.

But you should bring it flowers since it will die a slow death sitting on the showroom floor.

never saw one that color before.

I regret not buying my BILs creampuff (he sold it to by a Cobra). 1st year, and I think the first one sold in NY. was like new. My other BIL grabbed it before I had a chance to consider it. Don't recall what it would have cost then (maybe 5 years ago?), but I am sure it is worth more now!

I was at the grocery store I frequent a time or two a week yesterday.

After already having spaces reserved for Expectant Mothers, Moms With Toddlers, Veterans, Employee of the Week and Month, Department Head of the week, and cart corrals, they installed two EV spaces about a month ago.

I’m, obviously, not there all day when I go, but I haven’t seen anyone using the EV spaces yet.

Come to think of it, one of the Sheetz stores nearby has about 8 Tesla chargers close to I-99. I have seen a car in there about three times in over a year. I would bet it gets used more than the local grocery store ones.

Of course, as time marches on, they will get more and more use.

We check the Tesla chargers occasionally. The latest data Ifound shows 10% of the electricity comes from renewables, but the Teslas are there charging up on the other 90%. From 1 to 7 Teslas. On weekends is the higher number. Seeing people from Georgia "filling up" makes me dread driving from here to home for them. Two more stops of 30-40 minutes?

I saw a regular charger set up at a Walmart and I believe there was only 1 car there out of 8 chargers?

If they’re working. I’ve heard a lot of stories about non-working chargers being a big problem since the stores install them for the virtue signaling but don’t want the cost of maintaining them.

the stores have nothing to do with them. they are leasing out the spots so some company (electrify america, or Tesla) is responsible for them.

Really? Then my statement stands but the blame for them being broken is shifted.

A very funny WKRP station episode in Cincinnati.
Maybe funnier than the current police video wanting help finding two men who stole a 20 x 8 ft.
