Here is one question and Answer by Dennis O'Sullivan in this weeks Wheels segment - more detective work; QUESTION
About two weeks ago, I had a flat tire on my car. I stopped into a gas station that had a garage attached. They told me that they could not fix the tire because the nail hole was on the sidewall. I reluctantly agreed to purchase a new tire for an exorbitant price and went on my way. They were going to charge me ten dollars for getting rid of the old tire so I told them to put the old tire in my trunk. The garage then told me that they would just throw the tire out for me without any charge. I said no and told them to put the tire in my truck, which they did. On the way home, my suspicion was that they did not want me to have the old tire so this prompted me to go to my garage when I got home to have them look at the tire. My suspicions were correct. The tire could have been repaired but I was sold a new tire under false pretenses. Enclosed is the receipt for the new tire and a note from my garage that said that the tire could be repaired. Can you do anything for me?
Mable from Grimsby
ANSWER
I called both garages for you and the garage that sold you the tire is adamant that the nail puncture was on the shoulder of the tire and they would not try to patch a tire in that area. Any puncture of a tire on the shoulder or the sidewall cannot be properly repaired and has to be replaced. Tires that are worn to the tread wear indicators also cannot be repaired regardless of where the nail hole is. The price of the new tire was about twenty per cent more than what you could have purchased the tire here in town. On the invoice however, you will notice that he did not charge you for installation and balancing which when taken into account, you actually purchased the tire for less than you would have in town.
I then spoke to your garage and they told me that the nail hole in the tire was just on the upper edge of the sidewall and in their judgment, they would have tried to patch the tire. Would they have been confident of the repair? MAYBE. Would they guarantee that the patch would hold? NO.
I think that you made the right choice by purchasing a new tire.
Well yesterday the spring on the garage door sprung. Took a bit of effort to get the door up and have my wife move the cars as I held the door open. Guy is in the garage right now replacing the springs.

I don't think I'd ever write to Dennis to ask for advice..
Dennis is a nice guy, but he may have given the wrong advice to another reader in today's column about whether you should drive an automatic using one foot or two feet. He said you should use one foot to drive an automatic, because if you use two feet you could panic and while using your left foot to brake you also stop on the gas pedal as well. He says the left foot should be way over to the left, to help support you and brace you as you stomp on the brake pedal.

Opinion is right. I think this is good advice for 99% of drivers.
At the racetrack, however, they will instruct you to use 2 feet with an auto trans car.

Buying one replacement tire may or may not have been the right decision.
need more info in the case study. there was a mention about lack of tread? If the tires were close to bald anyway, at minimum should have done the pair on that end of the car if it needed to be replaced. I also would not mess around with a sidewall puncture if it was in a gray "might work" area.
I'm a one-foot automatic guy. My mother drove with two feet, but then again, she was just born late enough to get the first automatics. and never learned to drive a stick.
At the track, maybe you want to spool up the turbos while braking? Otherwise, what's the point? (I don't really want to know..)

There is no real reason, or any good reason, to use two feet while driving an auto.
On a related note I used to work with this 20 something kid who once told me that he noticed his grandfather was using both feet and wondered why anyone would drive with both feet. After asking him some questions it turned out his grandfather had a manual transmission. He had no idea how to operate a manual, or even that they existed.

There is approximately 0% chance I'll ever watch that movie.
I watched it on the plane to Hawaii.. meh.
I would never watch it either but then again, I find most movies these days unwatchable anyway.
On this particular one though, earlier this week there was a blurb on some TV show about it (maybe hyping the Blu-Ray version, dunno) and they cut to a clip of one of the flying/battle scenes. The quality of the CGI was really poor, so much so I was shocked. It was so clearly faked it made me wonder how it made the cut. I've seen better CGI on episodic TV series.
Oh I have nothing against James Bond (even though I think Steed is the better English agent)
Coincidentally, yesterday I was fooling around with Roku and found that they list The Avengers as being available. Turns out they seem to only have seasons 2 through 5 or so. Not totally a bad thing as those have Honor Blackman in many episodes and I really like her. Unfortunately the quality is not great and they are in B&W of course. It appears that it was all shot on video, not film, in those early years. Production is pretty crude too.

The bad CGI had to be an artifact introduced somewhere in the playback chain; the CGI in both the theater and on my 4K TV seamlessly integrates with the practical effects.

I've never been a fan of Tom Cruise. I did see the first Top Gun movie, and I will probably see the new one, eventually, but I'm sure it will never be high on my list of favorite movies. I'm waiting for the new Avatar movie, personally.
I was taught to drive on a standard transmission car (and truck), and I was taught to only use one foot with an automatic transmission equipped car. I don't think it makes that much difference whether you use one foot or two.
On the use of CGI -- my all time standard of how things should be done would have to be The Lord of the Rings. The background scenery is breath taking and awe inspiring, making me really want to visit New Zealand. And the transitions from real scenery to CGI is state of the art. All of which made me a little disappointed with the new "Rings of Power" series.
About driving with one foot or two. For most people, driving using one foot is the way they learned to drive and that is probably best for most people. However, there is a case to be made that driving with 2 feet may cause fewer accidents;
A handful of experts, such as retired UCLA psychologist and ergonomics researcher Richard A. Schmidt, believe using two feet can solve a big problem: crashes that happen when a driver accidentally hits the gas pedal instead of the brake. Schmidt says these crashes are far more common than most of us realize — and the government estimates there are about 16,000 of them per year.
However, pedal error is a surprisingly controversial topic, and others say that many of these crashes actually result from cars' defective electronic systems and sticky gas pedals. But the bottom line is that this sort of error does cause at least some crashes. Schmidt and others argue that two foot driving could be a solution.
The most often-cited reason that drivers of automatic cars should still use one foot is the idea that, if you use both feet and accidentally step on both pedals at once, you can do serious damage to your car — specifically, putting strain on the torque converter, transmission fluid, and brake fluid.
This was certainly true in the past. But after a series of high-profile defect-related unintended acceleration crashes — such as the ones that plagued Toyota vehicles in 2009, caused by floor mats and sticky gas pedals — automakers widely adopted a new technology that solves the problem.
These brake override systems automatically detect if both pedals are pressed down, and cut power to the engine if they are. They're now standard for the vast majority of new cars. And with both this technology and automatic transmission in place, there's not an obvious downside to using your left foot to brake.
If I am in heavy traffic and edging up slowly I prefer to use 2 feet. I don't think there is a right way or a wrong way, it is what you are more comfortable with. You would think the safety people could measure reaction times and come up with a more definitive answer.
