Answer: OPEC. The East Texas oil boom (centered in Kilgore) and the resulting uncontrolled oil production crashed the oil markets in the 1930s, resulting in the Texas Railroad Commission enacting strict rules limiting production. OPEC's founders copied the commission's organization and its rules.
The array of Kelvinator appliances on the sidewalk made for an interesting display. I guess in a small Texas town they didn't need to worry about some outlaw stealing them overnight.
An interesting sidelight is that the merger resulted in Nash being the first (I believe) auto manufacturer to offer an A/C system completely integrated under the hood.

2003+ Neon. It’s a shame they weren’t reliable because when it first came out on paper it was a very nice package.
I don't know about "very nice" but when it ran, it was a good first car. The problem is when it ran it left you stranded too.... resulting in a "not running" period.

A cousin gave me some old pics on my recent trip - most cars were easy enough to ID that they would be no challenge here, but this one is a little obscure. No background story on the pic, just a small snapshot that was apparently taped down at one time 65 or so years ago:
Yes, Starliner name was used only in 60-61. The mystery pic appears to be a mild custom - lowered, tri-bar spinner caps, spotlight, modified in period as the background looks vintage.
The easy tells for a 57 and 58 Skyliner are the square Galaxie top used in 59 and the gas filler is on the driver’s side in front of the rear wheel well.

I thought it was the hard top convertible. I can just never remember the difference between star and skyliners!
The Starliner had the fastback, sloped roof starting with the 60 Ford. The Skyliner was used twice, in the mid 50s with the glass half roof and again in the late 50s , 57-59 with the square Galaxie roof of the retractable hardtop. And then there’s the Sunliner which was used for the regular cloth top convertible going back to the 50s.
