Given that you currently own a high-end Cadillac iirc, I'm a little surprised you'd consider a Mazda. How many miles do you have on your car?
Not many at all, about 17,000. Not looking to replace it, just interested in new stuff and keeping current.
By the time you put a turbo in the CX-50 it's getting close to the price of the CX-90, which is a much more luxurious, powerful, and roomy vehicle. It's on the large side, but the base CX-90 seems like a good value.
Anyway, yeah, Mazda does seem to have made some weird choices over the years.
Funny you mention the prices. I visited the local Mazda dealer today to look at new models on the lot and saw exactly what you were talking about. They had a loaded CX-50 with a sticker of almost $52K Cdn. There was also a base model CX-90 there with a sticker of $48K. The 50 had a lot of geegaws on it, but there is no comparison between the two otherwise.
Regarding the weird choices, I think that’s true. The bizarre infotainment and screen positioning is a good example of that but not the only one. They seem to have a mindset of “this is how we do it and you just need to get used to that”. In the CX-90 forums the various safety and nanny features that are largely Mazda’s first try at implementing seem to be causing a lot of problems and annoyances with erratic and unpredictable behavior. I’ve read the explanation that Mazda is a small company in the automotive scheme of things and just don’t have the resources to devote to those things that bigger manufacturers do, leading to glitches.
The infotainment system Mazda uses is just awful...just awful! The one reason why the CX-30 is off my short list as it really checks all the other boxes. Just like the Corolla, long overdue in the refresh department. Seems like it hasn't changed in years, the both of them, and have no reason why. The Honda Civic has raised the bar and the competition needs to get in gear here and make changes. We did own a Mazda 3s for ten years and it was an excellent vehicle but when it came time to replace it, the newer 3 just wasn't that great anymore.
Did check out a new VW GTI and liked it except the use of the touch screen to get to the infotainment system and the HVAC system, which seems totally absurd. There was nothing wrong with the two knob system used in my current Golf and think it's unsafe to be playing with a touch pad when one is driving. But if I had to buy something right now, the GTI SE would be the one. And it'll probably happening one day...unless we end up moving to a house with a larger garage.

There are lots of excellent small cars out there that would fit your garage! I prefer the touch screens. Even better are the voice commands which I find I am using more and more.
Sure, there are some that could fit but, right now, none that I like as much as the Golf. So waiting is the best choice right now. Just keep banking the money so I'll have more to pay for it when the time comes, and paying cash is my preferred choice right now. Just glad it's not something I have to do right now. Its just like my smart phone, sure, I'd love to get the iPhone 16 but, besides a couple of small issues, my iPhone 12 is just fine for what I use it for. I need the GPS for work and the phone has to be able to make calls. Besides that, I'm good to go, so waiting another year makes total sense.

My new work schedule is working out just great. Working four days is not a problem as the weekends are shorter days. And the ingress/egress from the minivan is so much easier for my spinal issues to deal with. No downside here except the potential to get a few more hours/week in the big 15 packer is greater. But, my health is much more important then the few extra hours I could make and really, it all comes out in the wash. I'm averaging about 29 hours each week which is fine, which is fine with me.

Quite the rough time with the Maserati yesterday. Did the charcoal canister, valve, and secondary air pump. No idea what exactly was causing the leak but got those all as a bundle on eBay with 30k fewer miles than mine and far better condition (my pump was well rusted). While I was at it, I changed the transmission fluid. Got it all buttoned up after the Eagles game and went for a test drive to get the tank filled. Little did I know the weird gauge has an extra band of white below the actual empty line. So I didn’t make it to the station. Wife brought some gas to me and I got it restarted and to the station. For some odd reason, it decided running it dry would affect it at the station rather than when I restarted on the side of the road. Took a good 5 mins of starting and struggling to get her going again. Made it home. Took her out again this morn and she ran very well. Picked up some lost power and the shifts are much improved. Fingers crossed the CEL remains extinguished. Previously, it would stay out for a while after resetting but eventually return.
Oh, and the Alfa was fun the other night, too. With the help of my son, we bled the clutch after completing all the services and repairs. Took wife to the store in it. Was OK except revving past 5k was super slow. I hoped warming up would solve it. On the way BACK from the store, I started losing the clutch pedal. Got stuck for a min at a stop sign when it wouldn’t go into gear. Frantically pumped it up and forced it into gear. Last turn before the house, it happened again. Got it into 2nd and limped it home in gear. I think I’ll have to put the delay valve back in. Maybe removing it is letting air in the system.

I’ve had good coffee, bad coffee, cheap coffee, and expensive coffee. I can tell bad coffee easily enough, but often with what I deem decent coffee I find no correlation between taste and price. It’s just coffee.

Just because you started out poor (I did too) doesn’t mean you have to stay that way.
Fair enough, and I haven't. That said, I haven't developed the tastes that many of those who were better off in their younger years take for granted.

The garage positions are non-negotiable and have been for just over 37 years. Honestly, she'd be a disaster on the right side and would need multiple replacements so just easier if I park there. Just means I need to buy a small vehicle which I prefer and just guess I like what I got better then what I've tried out there. Just at 77,800 miles right now so for being almost ten years old, December 12th, not so bad actually. So waiting is the course I'm taking right now and I know if something does happen, the Golf GTI SE will be the replacement. Don't think I'd be a happy Mini Cooper owner to be honest and hate the fact that they went back to the center dash for the speedometer. Just seems so ridiculous to do that...I prefer the speedo right in front of my vision field where it should be. I'm content right now and do plan to do the coolant swap within the next month or so.

Well, I made it through the past few days without starving or hurting myself. Wife is on the train from D.C. right now and I pick her up after work tomorrow. These few days went by so quickly, I worked three of them. Didn't skip any meals and didn't burn the house down. The girls did check-in every day though to make sure I was o k. Crickets from our son but he's a guy, so I get it.
Tomorrow my oldest turns 40 which means my 70th is rapidly approaching. Another milestone I hope to pass and sure I will, G-d willing! I drink decaf only. The decaf from various mart stores or truck stops often is awful. But our local Cincy-based chain UDF has great tasting decaf. I add some cappuccino French Vanilla from the other machine and enjoy life.
I've been low caffeine for 30-35 years. I occasionally have diet Pepsi which contains caffeine. I did take a Coke Free in 20 Oz bottle when I drove to TN last summer. I sipped slowly but the caffeine in those must be high, like Mountain Dew. I could feel the buzz.
@28firefighter - the WRX looks great with the tint. The darker colors definitely work better with the black cladding. The white one I had was too much of a contrast.

Near record warmth in my area yesterday (I think we were around 75F), 50s today. I remember October 23-24th 2020 we had maybe 6-7" of snow too, it'll be here soon enough, hopefully in earnest after fall cleanup is complete.
I grew up in the days of the soda shop often as part of a pharmacy. Cherry syrup added to Coke was the fad. Great flavor. I still like it.

My sons grew up in a suburb with no sidewalks so they missed out on walking to a drug store with friends after school to do that. It was pretty rough on them growing up. Sometimes I feel bad about that and the worst part is I’ll never be able to make it up to them.
