The local Mitsubishi dealers around the corner from me (where old farmer got his Eclipse). Every time I go past I am shocked that they are still in business.
They make their money selling used cars. They have a big lot down the road near the Enterprise store.

It may seem that way, but it's a straightforward calculation.
They don't determine the money factor, then calculate what APR that might be.
They determine the APR (just like a loan), then convert it to a money factor for ease in calculation.
As I mentioned, it's easy to understand if you do the reverse calculation.
And... not a secret!
Oh, I know the math. And I know it is straightforward WHEN YOU KNOW THE CALCULATION. My point, albeit obscured, was that they honestly could have done it in an infinite number of ways. I find it odd and humorous that this particular way somehow became so widely used.
And, of course, as you know, there are some lenders who use an APR for leases, so the convoluted MF isn’t universal.
Ford uses APR not sure who else.
Ally did when I leased the Stelvio through them.

Sort of taking some inspiration from @anonymousposts2025 . Besides the fact that it is a gas guzzler and the bolster on the driver's seat is sagging (that can be fixed), what are everyone's thoughts on this 2016 Toyota Sequoia SR5? For comparison purposes, here is a 2017 Toyota Sequoia Limited
Both of these are in my area. The '17 is at the dealership where I bought my Highlander and Service my Highlander as well as my former '19 Tacoma and current '23 Tacoma.
The Sequoia checks off a lot of boxes for me. Bigger than our current '22 Highlander. V8, which I have never owned. Durable since it is many years into the model cycle. I obviously have to drive one, because I have heard they are big and drive big. Not the most taut of suspensions to say the least. The biggest problem is that there is no way my wife is going to want to drive it unless she has to. So if I like it and can strike a deal, then I'd have to trade my truck in and get something a bit more manageable for my wife to drive.

My only concern would be if they were driven into the city on a regular basis. My old work colleague claimed that no car was able to last more than 3 years on those roads. Other than that the price for so many miles would give me pause….but I’m cheap.

Dang. Here I go doing something crazy like trying to change the oil on the Alfa (the last part of its tuneup/service). I had a hard time tracking down a filter. Found the OEM info, put that into a cross-reference database, and ordered an equivalent stateside (I forget the brand but something known like AC Delco). Well, that didn’t work. Threads were wrong. Hmmm. Went back to the cross reference and found a Fram number. Got that from Amazon today. Nope! Odd. So this time I got smart. Found the actual specs of the original. 20x1.5 threads. Both of those the database told me to get were 3/4”. Back in the interwebs, I found Summit lets you search filters by thread size. Found a Mobil-1 filter with the right threads and right gasket diameter. That’s coming tomorrow. Poor car has been on the lift since yesterday afternoon.

We are all just one angle that sticks away from buying our next car. We ended up with the Si because “we don’t know how much longer we’ll be able to buy a new car with a manual transmission”…

Quick recap - given the difficulties of registering the Model Y after 7 months of ownership, we asked if they wanted to take the car back (sort of a bluff), and they agreed. We made all our payments of course through the day we had possession of the car, and we thought they owed us the pre-paid registration fees (about $1,100) and a couple of monthly payments paid after they took back the car (there was a delay with the leasing company, and to avoid any potential credit issues, we made the payments).
A few months back we received a check from Tesla via UPS for over $4,000, with zero explanation. That's probably around $1,500 more than we expected, but okay, maybe they actually valued the Tesla higher than our lease payoff?
Then yesterday, we receive another UPS package at the front door with another check for $1,100, presumably the registration fees?
I think they've basically unwound the entire deal as if we never leased the Model Y. But I look forward to the next mysterious UPS envelope from them.

Sort of like a purchase my son made from eBay recently (months ago now, though): He bought two refurbished laptops for pennies on the dollar. They were, IIRC, about $350 each, and were $1,100 laptops at retail only a year earlier. Unfortunately, they never showed up. My son waited nearly a month for them, and finally followed up with the seller, who sent him two more. Then, about two weeks later (just as he was worrying he wouldn't see the replacement units), all four showed up within two days of each other!
I grilled him about what was up with a literal stack of identical boxes, and he told me the story. Well, he followed up with the seller, who told him that the shipper already settled with him, so just keep the units. My son ended up selling them for $300 each to local folks, so he basically got his laptops for free (well, $50 each).

the only expense at turn in is the lease turn in fee. that is fixed by the lender (same for any car). This deal is all about tax credits and discounts to move them out. Basically a low interest rate and almost no depreciation (cap cost - residual) baked in.
That’s incredible. Do they set the residual at 99% to get there? I can’t imagine they’ll not get hosed at return time. Somebody has to pay the piper eventually.
Colorado chips in an extra $5350 that you don't get anywhere else.

I get that CO has very generous tax credits which are used to reduce the cost to the customer but knowing the depreciation rate on most EVs I can’t believe the dealer or manufacturer aren’t losing a ton of money doing that deal.
My other question is what are they going to sell that EV for at the end of the lease? There has to be a big difference between the buyout price and what the car is actually worth. Can the tax incentives compensate for that?
I admit I don’t know that much about tax credits and leasing calculations but it just feels like the dealer or manufacturer is taking a big hit.

Drove a Kia EV6 yesterday and was impressed. Impressed enough to buy...no way, but to lease, of course. But, the range drops quickly on I-95 and it was only in the mid to upper 70's. That part was a negative to me. But drove nicely once I got used to the pedals. Not too big either, something I really liked.
