Terry....I have a 2003 LS430 that I bought new about 5 months ago. It is an ultra lux, silver on ecru with 7700 miles. The car is flawless and is in Orlando, FL. I took the car in for its first service about a week ago and the service manager backed an SUV into the side of it. The damage was limited to the left rear quarter panel. They are fixing the damage (it will be getting a new OEM quarter panel). Now that the car has had bodywork and paintwork, I'm sure that it has taken a big hit in its resale value. Can you give me an idea of much value the car has lost as a direct result of this repair?

...... Ok, so now the mystery unwinds .. it's a Canadian, and If you are seeing that $33,0+ range, then the vehicle seems like it's being passed as a reg Benz ...

$37/$38 range ..? ... maybe in Baghdad .. -or- if it's a super clean, super tough, glow in the dark 5/7/10ker .. if you can get $35,0 for yours, than Grab it ~ cuz' thats ALL the Jingle on the planet ...

..... And Merry Xmas to you .! .. thats the way I like to start my day .. Yikes.!

             Have they given you any estimate yet, are we talkin' $700 .. $1,700 .. $4,700 ..? .. color .?

                           Terry.

    Terry,

The estimate for repairs is around $1600.00. They will be replacing the left rear quarter panel with an OEM part. The car is silver.

....... Good morning Hell, it's 7 o'clock at night, where have you been ...?

Hey the important thing is, she is OK .. cars are just sheet metal with a pretty face and can be replaced in a nano second ..

02 TL's with 12/20k are doing "around" the high $18's, low low $19's .. the "S" types are doing "about" eh', a ghee whiz more .. don't get to crazy with the navs, they add maybe $400/$500 more ... the 03 TL's with the Nav and all the "S" stuff are doing "around" that $25ish range with 8/10/12k .....

These are great buys in the market ...

                            Terry.

...... Your going to have to stay active with this one, that means being there a few times and making sure you and the shooter become golf partners .. not too much damage, but just enough to make ALL the difference in the world ..

This will all depend on who's doing the work .. is the paint "just" right, is there any overspray, is there any airbrush marks, etc, etc. .. $1,600 isn't really alot, but it has to be done the right way by a "Top Gun" shooter ... keep every record and check around and make sure it get's Lexus certified, we can only wait til it's done cuz' it's going to show on carfax ..... damn.!

let me know what happens ...

Very high miles for the year. Average condition at best. Deep in rubber. We get them for $2500 loaded and nice down to $2K less than nice, auction all the time here, Midwest. Should be in that range on trade.

Can we say lots o'miles, Chrysler Tranny, Gobs and gobs of them available used with much lower miles than this one.

It is not even the best time of year to try and private party retail. No summer vacations going on now, and too late for winter holiday travel.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
....... Seems like everything is going your way here .. good color for SCal, nooo miles, it has the spoiler and all the stuff ... trade side, in and around the low to mid $11's, "maybe" could stretch towards the high $11's depending on the dealer and the barometric pressure ..

.. the miles save this pup ..

It's got all books and records + clean Carfax. What sayeth the Oracle?
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
    ..... Oracle ..? .. isn't that a computer company.?

Just the sedan, right.? .. the miles are lowish for the year, the color can be used at Halloween .. if it's has a great history, deep round things, looks, feels and drives like a 00 Volvo, then the dealer "might" have $2,5/$3,0 and some change in it ... $4,5ish would be A L L the peso's ....

             What are they asking ..?

                          Terry.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
...... SW1 .. oooh, here's one you never get to see .l.o.l.. miles are tall, it's got that funny little thing between the seats that you have to move all the time to get to a higher speed ..

Uh, hmm, eh, let me guess, maybe $2,5 on trade and can be bought for $3,900 or less ......... :)

....... Happy Holidays to you and the hubby ..

Whoa, stepping up to a Fat Daddy sports coupe ..?

Of all of the brands you could be lookin' at, the Acura is the best in this particular market .. super quality, no Ferrari hangovers, will run like a top forever, service costs are about 20cts on the dollar compared to any of the competition, you won't have to wait 6wks for a part or service, you can buy new tires down the street at Captain Ed's Clams and Tire exchange, plus you can buy a new NSX keychain for $10 bucks or less ~ and WOW, it's an automatic .. Rare.!

These are wonderful machines and from what you are telling me it's perfect all the way around, driven' on Sundays, serviced and garaged, sounds like a pampered puppy -And- the price is Right, real Right ... but the best thing I can do is only recommend a few things. If I remember correctly your a "7" driver, so this is going to be a W H O L E different gig ...

A few years back, my brother got the Vette bug, he couldn't live without one, had to have it, couldn't sleep at night, some people count sheep, he was counting Vettes, yatty yatty, but he has Never driven one .. around the block and down the street on a sunny day, yes, taking one out for a 80/120 mile run in the streets, freeways, school zones, malls, dry cleaners, the "stop" at the 7-11, nope never did ... so, I gave him one on a Monday morning, he drove to work, he made a few business calls, carried his briefcase in and out, top on, top off, too hot too cold .. come 5pm in the afternoon, he was "over" it ..

All I'm recommending is, drive this puppy FIRST, even if this guy is super picky, pay him $100 an hour to get the feeling for it, your streets, your roads, your malls ... it's a great price, super vehicle, the miles are ultra low and it's a good color, but if you don't like it in 500/900/1500 miles or whatever, your going to be selling it in the spring .. not Good, not Bad ~ it's just a whole *different* driving experience ..

I hope this makes sense ..

                           Terry.

Well, it was morning when I wrote it... LOL.:)

Any way, my insurance settlement on the accord came to $14530.51. ($13885 + tax - deductible).
Not bad for a 4 yr old accord that I bought new for $19,900 out the door.

Now, to be more specific on 2 Acuras I found at local dealers

2003 3.2 TL Type S, silver, black leather, no NAV,
         6,200 miles Asking $27,900
2003 3.2TL Base, no NAV, Grey, 5,400 miles, Asking $25,500

    What do you think?

Well, you were right on the money - got 17300 on trade-in.

Just wanted to say thanks again for your great service, and wishing you all a great holiday season!

Proof that asking prices are an exercise in First Amendment rights...they were asking $7988. Ha!
Anyway, it's sold. A friend at work offloaded his '90 740 (sun damaged interior, bad shocks, 210,000 miles, cold start/idle issues) +$3,500. The 960 really IS a time warp car...beutiful condition. He's happy, and it sounds like he got a pretty good deal...I'd have begged Mrs. Lance for it had he not bought it. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I actually already traded the car in for a new Lexus RX330. They only gave me $10,700 for it in trade (highest trade offer they got, the lowest was $9,800). I found out that they use "fair" KBB condition while evaluating - despite the low miles and the fact that the car only required very minor, if any, reconditioning. They did heavily discount the Lexus though (almost $4,000 off MSRP, with zero negotiation), so the whole deal was still acceptable to us. Cheers !

    And I found one more

2000 Acura 3.2 TL Grey 28,000 miles the usual stuff, no Nav, located in Westchester Co., NY
Asking $21,000. Seems high. What do you think?

    Thanks in advance.

I've got a Crystal Blue Metallic 2002 Miata LS. 24,000 miles, 6-speed, tan leather, ABS. I'm thinking of selling it at Carmax in KC (2.5 hour drive) b/c I don't want to see it around here (too painful...I love this car). How much should I expect to get for it?

If I chicken out and decide to sell my 04 Toyota Matrix XRS with 6-speed, cd changer, moonroof, and 2,000 miles how much should I be able to Carmax it for???

Thanks in advance for your input! :)

    Go Chiefs!!! :D

...... Great vehicles and the miles are low on this one, good color for the area and their asking $21,0 ... you should know the drill by now, gotta be clean with a great history ..

Their asking high retail (ya never know when a trade gets thrown at ya) dealer probably has the $15's in it ... you should be able to buy it for "around" that $18,9 figure or less ...

                       Terry.

...... Howdy partner, did you get all your Christmas shopping done, or are you gonna wait til tommorow and get it done then ...? .l.o.l...

Nice little vehicles, this one is that cool blue with the tan guts .. miles arent bad, a little abs action .. there only doing "around" the low low $14's in your area right now .. I'm thinkin' that Carsmack will be "around" $13,5ish or so figure ...

These Yota's are kind all over the place right now .. I'm thinkin' they will be "around" that same figure as the Miata .. somewhere between the low low low $13's to maybe the high $13's ...

                       Let me know ...

I have a clean 99 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. It has 41000 miles, steering wheel controls, power driver seat, spoiler, alloy rims, etc. I just had the front brakes done and a new serpentine belt installed. I have been offered $5k by one BMW dealership and then $7,500 at another. Neither dealership is willing to give much on the MSRP of a new 325i. Why the $2,500 difference in appraisals?
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
I would be less worried about the appraisals. I would take the $7500 and run on a 5 year old Grand Prix. That is a good trade-in price. I have sold two 2001's with 50-60k at the auctions in the low $6s in the past 12 months.

    Hi Terry,
your expertise would be most appreciated. Trading 92 Subaru SVX All Wheel Drive, silver, 105,000 miles, average condition for miles. Leather, air, slider, auto,CD, all options for the model and year. Has had front end body work done by Subaru dealer. Not a salvage title.

The KBB and NADA bring it in at about $3300 to $3500. Edmunds brings it in at about $1300.00.

Car is in Portland, Oregon. What says you for trade in value.

    thanks for your help.
    John.

......... Since I'm still up wrapping presents I might as well answer a few of these (my back is Killing me.!) .... I might as well spread some of this Christmas cheer ..

For starters, I don't have the color or the area, but it's a Pontiac not a Porsche so I will be darn close .. .... $5,000 ...? .. Jlawrence01 makes the point ~ that's ALL the money on that dude, you might get a dealer to fall over, hit his head and drop double nickels to make an end of the year bonus ...

$7,500 ....? ... nope never happen, the 01's are barely doing that ....... IF, the dealer will "show" you $7,500 on a "over allowance" then that should be a $2,500 discount off MSRP ~~ thats the place you need to be ....

                       Happy Holidays.!

                            Terry ;-}

...... Merry Christmas John ... got any Tylenol ..?

Hows the body on this one, these had a tendency to get lot's of rust (and the windows would fail, and the, never mind) .... let's just say it's a 100k kinda ho-hum, non Santa Vehicle .. if we have no rust, cold breeze, new round things, "looks" and drives like a 98, all the service and everything works, then you "Might" be seeing closer to $2,0 .. but I like I said before, Subaru was doing some real good private stash on this one, kinda got a bad rep ... *but if this is a nice one, who knows ..

Let me know, or I will have Rudolph drop some brown tasty cakes in your driveway ...

                        Enjoy your holiday.!

First, I would like to thank you for the countless hours that you spend placing information on these boards. Few realize the amount of time that it takes to make the posts that you do. I do. And I appreciate it. Send me a PM the next time you are in Chicago.

Second, I finally bought that Lexus RX330 for just under $42k. I refused to buy the vehicle until driver test drove it. He loves the car and worked a deal with the leasing company to make the payments better. I have never understood what the buzz about Lexus was BUT ... having bought one, they really make the buying experience a real pleasure.

In the meantime, I am driving around in a Volvo S80 until we send it off to the auction. Nice car but not worth the price.

Hi, I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado, 4 dr crew cab, HD, short bed. Nice looking, black with cloth seats, bucket in front and fold down in rear. Only 6500 miles on the truck that I bought in April 2003.

Only trouble is that 300 ft of those miles were skidding back and forth and spinning out, to land on the pavement, driver side down. At the time I had a heavy camper on it. Typical retiree stuff. Quit my job to see the country in my RV. Unfortunately, I did not do so well or see much.

Fortunately, the camper took the brunt of the landing as it was wider than the truck, but the truck suffered $12,000 in damage. The camper was totaled.

Now I want to get rid of the truck as it is of no use to me. The body shop said there was no frame damage and I feel they did an excellent repair job. However, I know it has been in an accident and a discerning buyer (surely any dealer) will see some evidence. The paint just doesn't look the same to me when put on in a body shop. (Even smells different) The craftsmanship of the small body shop was unusually good, so the truck looks and drive fine.

I will have to be up front with any dealer or private buyer. According to NADA the truck is worth about $27,000. How am I going to know what a fair price is for this if I trade or sell it? Nothing that I have seen tells me this. This is not a frame or flood damaged car, but I doubt if it would ever be a certified used car either.

Any ideas, suggestions? I want to get as good a price as possible to pay off the loan and buy a good touring sedan or smaller SUV. Not sure yet. Maybe a certified used car or a lease. I want to drive around the country and see lots of places. That was the point of the camper, but I am never going to put another camper on the truck.

    Thanks, George
  • dkuhajdadkuhajda Member Posts: 487
Do you have any pre-repairs pictures available for the prospective buyer? It is going to help.

Shop it around local dealers. Take it in and get a cash buy price from the dealers. The only way to really get a good idea what it is worth is for an appraiser to see it in person after damage like that. Plus the dealer will be able to adjust for the prior damage history as well.

FYI What is the $27K number you found from NADA. Seems really high.

BTW I would buy a camper shell topper for the bed and still drive it around the country. Then you will have lots of covered room for things you might find and want to buy. Plus you could always put a foam pad in the back for short nap time if the weather is nice.

Happy Holidays to all of those who provide their expertise and assistance here - especially Terry.

I stopped by here about 6 months ago when I was buying a used car and selling a vehicle (as I do every 4-5 years). I appreciated the helpful advice and insights provided by this group; so much that I've been checking in daily since then just to learn what I can. I don't plan on another auto transaction for several years but I still enjoy this group.

    Best to all.

I hope you are having a great Holiday, I guess we will just wait for the next few days or so, the weather is supposed to get a little nicer and then perhaps get some real time and maybe put some miles on the NSX. At first he wasn't too crazy about the idea of just driving around, but he understands it and has volunteered to go for the first half hour or so and after that, hubby and I can take it for an hour or so, depending on the weather.
Thanks for the advice, I didn't think about the actual driving part, I guess that pay now think later item slipped our minds.

Have a wonderful weekend and thanks again.

It has got to be the pinnacle of arrogance to quote oneself. But it's kind of funny, so I'll share it.
On another discussion, I was complaining about the prices of used Subarus and the tendency of owners to drive them into the ground rather than sell them to people like me...

'Still and all, most mornings I check the classifieds to find my car..."1998 Legacy wagon, 5sp 90k all maintenance records, non-smoker, $6,000 obo."' [Dec20]

Ok, it's Dec 26 and I open the paper to find this: "Subaru Legacy Wagon 1998 5sp AWD ABS rack, very clean, well maint. 1 owner 79k mi $6675."

I might give them a call... Terry, if it's as described, ok rubber, no leaks and drips, what's it worth??? Am I on track thinking that $6,7 is not a bad "asking" price at all?

Five lbs more 'stately' than three days ago, I remain

Location, Location, Location? Midwest? Indiana? Michigan? Salt belt? South? A/C Works? Rustproofed? Interior? Smoker? Fast food fights?

Trade side, a ho-hum plus or minus from $1000 is average for the car, very condition dependent due to age.

My email will be open for a few days if you want to detail the maintenance history a little better and hopefully email a quality picture or two.
