Here's an oddball;
Suburban Baltimore
2000 Camry ES
4 door
4 Cyl engine (standard - whatever it came with)
5 Speed Transmission (!!!) Yes it IS odd.<grin>but sprightly performance and 30+mpg.
63,000 Miles
Forest Green/Taupe
Alloys 15" (upgrade from 14"s)
Fanatic retired owner, keeps car in detailed condition. Garaged, Meguiar's hand wax, very few blemishes on exterior - one door ding -small. Couple other minor scrapes nothing serious.
Scrupulous maintenance 5000 oil % rotate tires. Have verified service records.
No paint work or accidents.
Other than the 5-speed, this car would be a 95/100 used car. How big a hit will I take with the 5-speed?
Looking to sell locally in the paper.

Henry

2002 Honda Accord Special Edition
4-dr sedan
4 cyl
Auto trans
35K
Black ext / grey interior
Alloy wheels, factory roof, single CD, PW/PDL/cruise
Condition - good, would look alot better with a proper detail. Some light scratches on the edge of the trunk, easily buffed out. Otherwise dirty but not damaged. Smoked in though.
Brakes - rotors shake very lightly on hard stops, tires, about 40%, only maintenence done is oil changes every 4K
No damage or wrecks
This is a model Honda made out of Accord LX models; they basically added the alloy wheels & roof to make it a little nicer than the LX. I think this was a factory version though as I've seen lots of them around in many areas.
Drives great, just needs a good cleaning. It's my mom's car, just trying to give her a hand.. Thanks Terry - keep up the good work!
Jason
do you think i get more for this car when the weather gets warm or will the depreciation over the next 6 months overwhelm any benefit to waiting? just feel like i might be in a position to get "worked" if ya know what i mean.
2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport (mid-line model)
4.0 6-cylinder, 5-speed manual
black exterior, gray cloth interior
graphite alloy wheels
45k miles
hard and soft tops
tilt wheel, rear defrost and wiper
NO a/c
factory AM/FM cassette w/speakers in roll bar, NO CD player
in Chicago 60657 (north side, near the rich DePaul kids)
Condition generally good, paint very nice, no major scratches or dings. Left corner (probably plastic part only) of rear bumper pushed in, but no compromise to structure or mounts of bumper. Interior good except one cig burn in driver's seat, needs general detailing but will be done before trade. Soft top missing one plastic window panel, hard top now installed and in good shape, wiper and rear defrost functional. Tires are original but surprisingly good for 45k (would it pay to spend the $600 to have them replaced anyway?). New brake pads all around, rotors in front. He owes somewhere around $7-7500, I'm thinking trade should well exceed that. What do you think on trade, or should he sell outright? Prices on these rigs are really all over the place. As always, thanks!!
Just thought I would try a repost...any thoughts.
Have a really low # ($10,500 & $11,000!) from a dealer in ATL.

No, I'm not looking to sell, but it looks like my wife won't give it back to me, and I'm wondering if it might make sense to buy another one used. These are the perfect size for us, and I love the way it drives. Just put new Blizzaks on, and what a difference that makes in the snow.
I did an autotrader searh and found 15 (fif-teen) of them in a 50-mile radius... that's not good. Are there any '02-03s hitting the auctions for decent prices? Miles don't scare me if they're taken care of...

Really looks Showroom condition
Found one locally, in a driveway near here... it kinda ambushed me, nothing I could do. It's a medium red, steel wheels developing rust spots, "ok" rubber, 109k miles. No, the timing belt hasn't been done... other maintenance supposedly by the book.
There's a nasty scrape along the pass rr door, basically the door needs to be sanded, filled, shaped, and repainted before it rusts. Other than that, looks ok, and no accidents. One-owner car.
Lady driver, nonsmoker, commutes to Ann Arbor, has bought a new car; she stepped "up" to a 5sp Toyota Echo. Really.
As for price, she'd like $7,800 but indicates it's negotiable. When I do TMV in "average" condition, I get private party of $4,600, which is almost kinda reasonable, considering you can't find these. I would not want to own it for more than $5 with the scrape fixed.
What's it worth?
-Mathias
Since it is family, take anything near $1000 and disclose the work that needs, should, be done.
Just under $2000 trade side, $3000ish private party retail if the bigger stuff gets fixed, i.e. cv boots.
Got a unique one here:
Beutiful Norman, Ok (OKC) - Home of the Sooners!
01 Chrysler Sebring LXI Coupe
3.0V6/ 5-Speed Shifter

One small scratch on rear bumper, probably easily airbrushed by lot fairy. One small door dent (Quarter Size), easily pdr'd.
80% tires, good brakes and everything else.
Thinking about giving it to the stealership in return for a new 05 Pathy. How bad will my head be taken off.
Thanks,
Racingjay
So far in LA I'm getting interest from private buyers around the $20-21K range. I think this would be a much easier sell in a state with some weather right about now, but there isn't quite as much demand when the low is 50 degress and 87 octane is $2.40 a gallon.
So how do I reach the snow folk?
I'll let you know what I get for it, thanks again,
Steve
Just my $0.02.. (I've owned a '98 and currently an '02), but with the door fixed, and the timing belt done (like, immediately), I'm thinking its worth about $6K, if you are sure it is a one-owner and the rest of the maintenance is current.

2001 Land Rover Discovery II SE
54K..Epsom Green.4 new tires (last week)One owner corporate lease. Bought 6 months ago from an independent dealer. Excellent condition. New brake pads on front(last week). For the heck of it, went to talk to a Nissan dealer about a new Xterra, and was offered a mere $13,000. I walked out in a snit, leaving my husband sitting there with the salesman in his cubicle. He told my husband that the advent of the 2005 Land Rover has made the Discovery II virtually worthless.
Can this be true? I bugged my husband for this vehicle, he got it because he loves me and knew I wouldn't shut up about it until I had one in my grubby little hands. Now I don't like it and he's saying "I told you so" nah, nah, na, nah na...
Real world?? I will live or die by your reply

Lets see here .. the miles are ok for the year but no warranty, we have the cold pack, we have the no-sale green thing going on, new rubber and new stoppers, tunes (of course) service is current ..... IF~ we haven't visited Maaco, no soccer Mom interior, clean paint, looks/feels and drives like an 03 with 20k .. then trade side, in and around the low/mid $12's, "maybe" the low low low low $13's ~ if I had to have a Root canal ...
Yep, the dealer is right on the money on this dude - and then some .. me personally, I probably would want to be back at least another $500, like into the low low $12's, color is ho-hum and even though the miles are low for the year, "All Euro imports" are Veeeery sensitive to miles, and that includes BMW, MB, Audi, etc, etc.com .. the 2005 stuff has little to do with it - but it makes for a good story .l.o.l.. .. sounds like they are working hard to get your business anyway, just make sure you get a good price on the Xterra or whatever you choose ...... let me know how it goes.!
Terry.
Actually your kind of a car nut and you take really good care of all of your drivers, you must get that from your Dad ..... $1,800.? it's probably a $6/$700 job, but I would just do a semi-service, detail, Ad, yatti yatti yatti ... $4,900 *asking* and cut it loose for $3,5/$4,5 ...............

Dealers probably are dropping the low/mid $14's in em' with 25/35k, then by the time they're done they might have the low low low $15's in em', probably see one for the mid/high $16's on on the Retail side .. auction money is "around" the tall $14's, low $15's .. I see one just went thru down the street from you for $12,5 with 43k ...........

Posted a couple of times but the above gives me some info. How would it impact the value if we the same car had the 7 seats and mileage was a bit higher - 68k. All other info in previous post (23389) from yesterday. We do have warranty.
lblair - sounds like we both in the same Disco boat. Good luck and let me know how you do. M.

The CPO warranty is worth nothing on trade-in and almost nothing as a private seller (only 7 months left). You never know, you might find someone who does a lot of miles and would put 20k on it before June.
I agree.. it might not make the car worth much more, but on the street, it will make it much more likely to sell quickly.. It is hard to sell a used car in the $15K-$18K range (which is what I'm betting it is worth).

Anyway, I'm considering a '96 or '97 Accord EX (4 cyl) or a '97-'99 Nissan Maxima or Honda CR-V. I'm sure I'll be asking about more cars once I figure out what I want. Maybe even a '98 or '99 Accord, more room, but they don't seem to be as reliable as the '96-'97.
I'll keep you informed if you do the same for me..

FWIW, I got $8,500 as a trade in value a couple of months ago on a cloth '99 SE with mid-50s miles. But, it was a 5 speed, and needed some recon on the outside (had some gouges), but it was mechanically good.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Anyway ...... this one is in the low miles department, it's Mathias's favorite, it's a 5 spd manual transmission and we got the color thing going on ... if the history looks good on Carsmack, the rubber is deep, no paintwork and your "favorite mekanic" gives it a nod, then I wouldn't have much fear in the Jetta's ... the dealer might have the super high $6's low low low low $7's in it, he might have bet the wrong way on the Denver/Oakland game and might have $7,5ish in it, maybe .... $8,900 is a fair price, maybe $8,5ish will work if you throw some *instant* cash at him ............ :^)
Terry.
I used to have a messy wife ... the words being here are: used to ...l.o.l...
The 99 looks like it might be a really good deal, skinny miles, we have some stuff, color is ok for Yankee territory, it's been rained on ..... it just needs a really good look see .. I've been to a thousand auctions, only bought one car in the rain ...

2002 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Sport Wagon Engine 2.5 165 hp boxer 4
Driveline AWD
Mileage 53500
Exterior color silver with beige bumpers and door strip things (whatever they're called)
Alloy Wheels, Sony CD Player with steering wheel audio controls added on, Viper car alarm with Remote Start (550 ESP I believe) Arm rest air filtration system carpeted floor mats rubber floor mats (yes I have both) roof rack automatic dimming mirror with compass, mud flaps and I think that's it for options.
Exterior paint is in good condition. A couple of chips on front that haven't rusted (thank you wax) have touch up paint to touch up before trade in. There's a red blotch of paint on the driver's door (can probably buff out) and some paint missing from the plastic beige door thing (should be able to touch up) There's no dings or dents that I've noticed.
Interior looks like new. I've been very anal about keeping it nice on the inside.
Tires are Yokohama AS430s and were new in August
All maintenance up to 40k miles was done at a Subaru dealer. After that point we've maintained it ourselves.
Now for prior damage . . . :-) The car was purchased in June of 2001 (Subaru released the '02s early). In January of 2002 (with 12k miles on the odometer) I was run onto a median on I-94 which caused 12,000 worth of damage to the car. Insurance picked up the tab and repaired the car. Most of the suspension was replaced and the car was completely repainted in the original silver/beige colors. It was done with all genuine Subaru Parts. Looking at the car right now you wouldn't know it was in an accident.
Carfax also does NOT show this accident despite there being a major police write up and tickets issued (to the other guy) as well as a massive insurance claim.
So with all that being said, what can I expect for trade in value if I was to trade it in a few months from now.
=================================
Good description- thanks ....
**which caused 12,000 worth of damage to the car** ...
Yeeeow.!! ...... $12grand.???
Is that American money..?!?
No half steppin'. for you.!
Well ......... lets just say it was never hit.
It's a 02 Subu Outback Sport wagon, the miles are a tinge on the high side, the color is right, even though it's painted .l.o.l., wheels, tunes, rack, all the stuff these usually have ... trade side, in and around the high $10's, maybe the low $11's -- now, add in all that $12,000 of work, I just don't know .. the paint could show it it, maybe when you pop the hood, maybe the overspray you don't see, maybe the reinforcement brackets, etc etc, I would have to see it .... I have a funny feelin' that once it goes up on a lift it won't hide much, then it might be worth $5,000, might be worth $9, pick a number, it's hard to say ........ Good luck and let me know.
Terry.
'24 Chevy Blazer EV 2LT
You bought a nice car for, what, $20k +TTL in98 or 99.
You drove it for 75k miles, and likely had to spend little in upkeep.
You sold it for $9, so that's just under 15 cents a mile for depreciation, + the maintenance. If the next guy wants to do as well, he'll have to drive it beyond 150k and 12 years of age, and he has an extra $2k to spend towards maintenance -- can you say timing belt(s)? Can you say C.V. boots?
I'd say you did really well.
-Mathias
Thanks!
Alex
Q
I'll have to check out the hood n'stuff. I haven't noticed any overspray or anything like that before. Believe me I had the car back to the place six times for them to fix the paint because it was not right. I'd notice the paint having totally different textures depending on where on the car you'd look. Sixth try was the charm. ;-)
I think I might keep the car a while longer just because car payments scare me (this baby is paid off) and chances are looking really good my next job will be a train commute to Chicago rather than what I've had in the past (used to be 80 miles a day until I moved last year) I haven't decided yet however.
What might be interesting would be to take it to Carmax and see if they figure out it's been in an accident. If they check out cars as close as they say they do that is. Like I said before the accident doesn't show up on CarFax at all . . . I'll let you know the results if I do.
Is this a car I'd be much better off trying to sell privately? If I was someone who wouldn't blurt out "Great car . . . It's been smashed" that is ;-)

Terry.
No disrespect sir, but if you bring this car to any used car guy worth their weight in salt to evaluate, they'll know by first glance its been repaired.... there are many clues (bolts being turned, slight overspray in areas you won't notice, panels not aligned exact, etc...), most your eye isn't trained to detect, just picked up on by experience after reveiwing thousands of cars. It'd be a good experience though, try it...

Good description, thanks .. you guys have a football team coming out of San Diego, gotta watch them guys ...
We have a 99 SLT 4x4 Durango with (gulp) 90k, right color, 3rd seat, tow pack, hot and cold running breeze, abs, 5.9 and we have a couple of Wild Cards - eeak.! .... the motor, well, most dealers will want this dude to hit the auction, it has a great warranty left, but if it goes south, then someone has to spend the space and the shop time to fix it, so most dealers would do a pass I would think, ya know, the old "K-I-S-S" thing .... the second wild card.? it has 90k and it's a 7 year old truck, so you and Wal-Mart just don't get along, face it .. so if there is no structural and/or safety issues and it was done -right-, then as Mathias would say: "Kein großes Ding"
Trade side, depending on the dealer, in and around the low/mid $6's, might maybe could (on a great and lucky day) get a dealer to struggle towards the $7 figure, depends on what they think about the new engine, so I would think the mid $6's would stop it in it's tracks .... me personally.? down Retail Rd it would go, "clean" Durango's are still popular and still get some jingle .. so, a wonderful and glorious detail, finish any service, a Donald Trump Ad, warranty becomes a great selling point, disclose everything, history on the front seat, $9,490 *asking* and cut that bad boy loose for the first $8/$8,9 ............... let me know what happens.!
