I am thinking of trading in my 2002 Nissan Maxima GLE. The engine blew at 22K miles, and needed to be completely replaced (covered under warranty). Not sure if this is a one-off or I picked up a lemon. Love the car, but not sure if I want to risk the maintenance costs after the warranty expires in a year.

    Details:
2002 Nissan Maxima GLE 3.5L V6, 4 dr, Auto, FWD
Mileage: 24,200 (mostly highway, not a commuter car)
    Location: Boston, MA
Major Options: Sunroof, Traction Control, heated seats, premium stereo...basically everything but the Navigation.
Condition: Very good condition. Minor paint blemish on back bumper. Interior is immaculate (no eating or drinking inside).
Tires: Front = just replaced 2 days ago (got a nail in one so I opted to replace 2 for even wear). Back 2 = original equipment.
Brakes: Original equip - Told are fine back dealer 2 days ago.

Any information you could provide would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

In my opinion, retail road with cracked windshield = not good, but not a deal breaker and certainly not a huge diference in asking price. Depends on the rest of the car. A junker is pretty easy to spot. Worth fixing... depends. I see a lot of pretty nice cars with cracked windshields. A small crack wouldn't keep me away from an otherwise nice car.

Out west we don't use salt, just gravel, which equals lot of cracks. I've never seen the police ticket someone for a windshield crack. Irony is many states don't pay much attention to the mechanical safety of the car, just whether it passes emmissions.

    Toyota Solara 99,500 miles
    4cyl automatic
    silver with black leather
    sunroof, alloys, good shape
    Tires have 60% tread
Good-looking car, no serious accidents but left rr qpanel
got backed in to & fixed properly.
    No problems, pretty-looking car.

What'll that bring private party in Lansing, MI?

A buddy of mine owns it; he inherited a 16k 2003 LW200 from his dad who no longer drives.
The Saturn/Opel has had more visits to the dealership than the Toyota did in the 3 years he's owned it.
    Electrical problems, see.

.... These are kinda like CRV's, they get stupid $$ - even with 100k .... this one has the slider and the hydes and it's a good color ... if we ran it down "Detroit way" with everything being super clean and everything clicking, it would probably do the mid/tall $5's, maybe even the low low $6's on the right day ...

Retail Rd.? .. papers, service, big bath, a picture of Elvis on the dash ... $8,5/$8,9 *asking* and I'm sure it will find a new driveway for $7,5/$7,9 ....

    04 Honda Accord LX
4dr sedan 4 cylinder automatic with less than 5k miles

neither of the 2 options Honda offered
no dents, no scratches, no paint, smells new
sits in the garage most of the time
80yr old mother-in-law sorry she didn't get more bells and whistles
now that she's got a new hip and a stint, she's ready to rock and roll. . .lol
I think it's 19 months old so plenty of warranty left

Trade-in value? Private sale probably not an option. Thanks.

..... Out there in Texas ...

Sounds pretty nice ... no miles, good color, auto and Granny has a new bag ..... trade side, in and around the super tall $15's low low low low low $16's ...

Medical Technology today really astounds me ... one of my bestest friends, his Dad (now 91) had hip surgery 2 years ago ... 4 days in the hospital, 6 weeks rehab and he was walking 2 miles a day 3 months later ... now, he almost beats me in golf and you have to drag him of the ladder because he cleans his own gutters .... science, ya gotta love it --- only 20 some years ago a a hip accident could mean the kiss of death ...

Granny, can I have the next dance ........?

I've come to depend on your input since I'm the offical car advisor in my extended family. . .I got elected since I personally trade like a lunatic. These Hondas are hard to beat. We bought it 19+ mo. ago for a little over $18k + TTL. That's mighty cheap driving. How the heck do they do it? And yes, modern medicine is amazing although their miracles raise the ugly question . . . can we afford to keep everyone alive forever? It screws the heck outta the Social Security actuarial tables. Thanks and I'll report to you how it all works out.
  • rroyce10rroyce10 Member Posts: 9,332
.... Yeah, the actuarial tables are changing ....

But it really has a simple solution, everyone should pay into it - no matter how much they make .... this idea of letting people invest is psychotic .. most people today don't have 40/60 days of savings, can you imagine if you let them invest some of their own S/S money ..l.o.l...

    ....... LOCATION ..??

As of today, you live in Philly .....

We have a 01 BMW 740i with 60,000 low low low miles .... the color is good for Philly, would kill ya in Tampa or Dallas, the round things are new, we have the nav, sport pack, blinders, shades, slider, you say the stoppers are newish and you've dragging the rims all over town .....

If~ the seats look hovered in, no I dragged my golf clubs all over the rear fender, no $2.00 car washes, no paint by numbers, the service is 110% and it looks/drives and feels like an 05 ..... then trade side, in and around the low/mid $20ish figure (depending on the wheels) might maybe "could" get a dealer to wander towards the $21 figure if it glows in the dark and it needs -0- .... if it needs stuff, start deducting ...

If it's as nice as you think it is, then I would run this dude down Retail Rd .. the old body style sells well and the new body style just says BMW, thats it ... get with the Dukes of Detail, finish any service, place a Fat Daddy Donald Trump Ad in the big paper and online, and: $25,900 *asking* and cry and whimper at $24,5/$25,5 ... but take it ..... what do you think it's worth.?

Good luck and let me know what happens ....

.... For $9,400 he better get the Constellation and 4 free tickets to Disney World .... any dealer, especially this time of the year would drop-kick that dude off his lot for $6,5/$6,9 .... they are so cold that they make Norway look like a sun bathing capital ...

    Location: Detroit Metro area
    1995 Pontiac Bonneville SE
    3.8L V6 FWD
    Mileage: 104k
    Color: Green/Charcoal interior
Options: Power drivers seat, p/w, p/l, not much else
    Condition:
    - Bought the car in Texas three years ago with only 40k miles on it. No rust anywhere
    - All fluids maintained per manuf. maintenance schedule
    - Tires at 50%
    - In the last few months: New shocks, new intake plenum, new engine computer, alignment, rad flush.
    - Has cracked windshield, I have not fixed it because it's on the passenger side only
    - Paint in good condition, very few door dings/scratches, definitely above average for a 1995.
    - Interior is also nice, no french fries, sucker sticks, or bubble gum

I'm thinking asking $3k and cut her loose at $2,5. Is this a fair asking price or should I aim higher/lower?

    Thanks!

Hi, I would like to sell Subaru Forester S 2000 with 86000 miles on it. It has additional towing package, security system, tinted windows, arm rest, CD player and couple other minor accessories.
What should I expect to get for this car. Thanks

    Just getting an idea:

    Boston, MA
    2000 Honda Odyssey EX
    Minivan
    3.5L V6
    FWD
    61K miles
    White Exterior, Gray Cloth Interior
Straight EX with no options - typical EX goodies

No dings or dents or scratches. Minor scuff on way bottom of front bumper which has been touched up. Paint shiny and regular zainoed. Bumper skins replaced at one time due to low speed hits - no other work.

Interior to have a spa treatment shortly.

Tires are new. Brakes have about 20K on them. Maintenance done to Honda severe schedule.

Have a Honda 7 yr 100K warranty that is transferable in a private sale.

    What say you??

    Alexasha,
There's a form just above the area where you type your post. Please use it as a guide to provide the expert(s) with the necessary information.

    Auto/Manual transmission?
WHERE? Esp. important on a Subie; these get decent money anywhere but esp. in the NE, in CO, and whereever thyere's snow.
    Color?
Tires? (not how many; what shape are they in)
Plus a few warm words about the general condition of the car would be nice. Do you smoke, lug smelly dogs around... that sort of thing. ALL dogs are smelly, btw, for the purpose of usec car sales.

Subies get sick money, though, you might be pleasantly surprised. For an auto with so-so tires in no-sale green, I'm gonna guess... oh... $6,500 trade-in if it's nice and hasn't had any paint/body work.

    SOrry,
    Here is additional info
    Auto transmission,
I live in mississippi, so no snow
    Red color
Tires - Michelin HydroEdge about 8 month old, great condition, perfect for rain

This is a great car. I had it for 4 years and never had any problems with it. I drove it primarily on highway. I love this car, but it got small for my growing family.

Color: Black Exterior; grey leather interior
Major Options: Sunroof, Traction Control, heated seats, premium stereo...basically everything but the Navigation System.
Condition: Very good condition. Minor paint blemish on back bumper. Interior is immaculate (no eating or drinking inside).
Tires: Front = just replaced 2 days ago (got a nail in one so I opted to replace 2 for even wear). Back 2 = original equipment.
Brakes: Original equip - Told are fine by dealer 2 days ago.

Any information you could provide would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

What kind of warranty does Nissan offer on the replacement engine?

Seems to me that you will be taking a bath on depreciation on a car that will probably last forever. Plus the buyer will likely know that you have a new engine.
  • mitzijmitzij Member Posts: 613
Ditto the above post. My car had it's engine replaced around 7500 miles. Since then, it's been a great car, has only left me sitting once (thanks to my own personally-botched brake job). She'll turn 15 years old next spring, has 138K miles, and still runs like a top.
  • 2002blackmax2002blackmax Member Posts: 5
The new engine is covered under the original factory warranty (expires Mar 07).

Would trade the car in as opposed to selling on my own to remove any liability on my part. I just worry about things such as the tranny going bad. Nissan's reliability is great, but you figure one in a 1000 or so is going to be sub-par. If the engine went, why not the rest?
  • jlawrence01jlawrence01 Member Posts: 1,757
It is YOUR money ... if you want to take the $3-4k hit.

I see people get rid of cars because of some problem that they ***might*** have sometime in the future. I prefer to wait until I do have the problem ... at 150k miles or more.

I'm trading in a 97 Mercury Mountaineer toward an 06 Honda Pilot. It's been my baby since it was new and has been very well maintained.

    1997 Mountaineer (white over silver)
    V8, runs great, 79,000 miles
Tires have about 35K miles on them but look good.
Interior is perfect, carpet looks new, leather seats, CD changer, top grade stereo.

The exterior is in good condition...except for a dent about the size of a tennis ball behind the left rear door (some Bozo backed in to me in a parking lot).

First, I'd like input on what it might bring on trade and secondly, would it be worth spending $500 to fix the dent before talking deal?

    Thanks for the help!

I agree with the others who say to keep the car, at least "if" you're going to take a big hit on trade in because of the replaced engine. "Just supposin'": you get $2K-$3K less on a trade because of the repair. You could probably keep a Maxima until 150K miles and not spend more than that on the car.

Heck, there are Hondas that have had trannys replaced. It would be different if you had a VW or LR that are known for needing lots of expensive repairs. I think you're probably worrying way too much, esp. with a warranty thru Mar 07(!). .....btw, have you done a carfax to see if the engine repair shows up?

My preference is to keep the car since it is completely paid off, but if I could get fair value and something nicer in the next year or so before the warranty expires, it's another option.

    Haven't done a carfax.

Sounds like a plan. "If" you don't have to take a huge beating because of the replaced engine (beyond normal depreciation), then that obviously gives you more options. Some dealers might not care as much as others, etc., or even notice (?) (altho then your conscience becomes your guide)--that's why I'd start with a carfax. Just my 2 cents as a non-expert.

    ===========================

Up there in the Triad area ..... we have a 00 Honda CRV LX with 58k .... the color is right, the rubber is deep, we got the auto thing and it's a 4wd .... except for a few kisses here and there and if we don't have any Dutch Boys, all the service is complete and no Bonnie and Clyde interior ... then trade side, in and around the mid/tall $9's, "might" maybe get a dealer to wander into the low low low low low low $10's if the alignment between Saturn and Jupiter is correct and it needs -0- .....

Me personally, I would send this dude down Retail Rd .. super detail, superb Ad and: $12,900 *asking* and let someone slap ya silly at $11,5/$12,5 .. but take it ..... properly done, it won't last long .... I have a stupid feelin' that $11,9 is going to be the target price ....

Don't forget to let me know .........

.. **Did the deed this weekend..... got the $23.5K on my trade (05 TSX)..... busted outta there on an 06 Accord Sedan EX-V6
for $24.8 plus TTL..... not a bad deal..... hated to release my TSX.... but the sun will continue to rise.... back to the heartland I go!!!!!
Just one more question for ya Terry.... does the ball roll better when the ground is frozen? Trying to get my driving distance up to that "other guy"...I think his name is Tiger!!

Thanks as always Terry ....you were right on the money!!!!**
    ================================

Like my Great Grand Daddy used to say: .. "even a blind squirrel can find a nut here and there" ..

It's funny you brought up the question: ""does the ball roll better when the ground is frozen?"" .... I was just reading an article that says the colder the weather, the harder the ball - so the shorter the ball flight ... by the way, I'm trying to book Pinehurst for a weeks play .... ;)

Thanks for the update and I'm glad things worked out ..

    Thanks!

    Hi,
I'm debating on whether to trade or sell privately my '99 Grand Cherokee...an '06 GC will be its replacement.

    The info:
    99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
    Located near Providence, RI
    4.7 V8, 4x4
    70,000 miles
Light beige (champagne?) exterior, with matching leather.
Has all options for the year, including sunroof, Infinity sound with changer, Quadratrak, Towing pkg (never used), heated seats, etc.
I bought it in '02 as a certified pre-owned, it's under the 8/80 warranty until 2/07. I've taken good care of it, meaning weekly hand-washes + interior cleaning, waxed every three months. No accidents or paintwork ever. Maybe a few tiny stone chips on the front bumper, that's it. Plus a small stain on the rear seat carpet, about 1.5" in diameter.
All service is current, records available. Michelin's are at 90% of new all around. New brakes all around 5,000 miles ago. A/C blows cold, but not as cold as it should be.
Nice vehicle overall, a lot of people think its newer.

Any idea what it's worth on a trade and for private party? One Jeep dealer offered $6,800, which I'm guessing is in the ballpark but a little low. My payoff is $6,000.
