If you're getting a great price on the new Subie (I don't know what "swapping #'s" is), & you've shopped the tC to several dealers, with similar results, what's the problem? That you think the tC "should" be worth more? Also, do you get tax savings on a trade?

Then again, I don't know the market for the tC, so maybe you could get more selling it yourself(?). Or, like in your latest post, you could wait, &

*look for a deal too goof to pass up*

P.S. You could also try hitting the Subie dealers one last time on Dec. 30.....
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
price is set on the new one, and it is likely that the car wil be there.

Yup, the problem is that I think the tC s/b worth more. Yes, I do get a sales tax credit, so that helps. I don't really "need" a different car, I was largely thinking of making the move now because the resale (per Terry, and Edmunds TMV) was still pretty high. Since the dealers don't agree, I either have to sell privately (I have some ads going out), or put in more cash than I had budgeted.

Guess which option gets a frown from the boss?

I will likely go back one more time (after seeing what retail road looks like)to the dealer, with my bottom line of what it would take for me to do the deal that day. If they pass, so be it.

Besides, it's not like they are going to stop making Subes anytime soon!

Mom did do a CarFax on it, comes up clean. I didn't know you could tell WHICH auction it sold on by the CarFax report, so I don't know if your ARENA unit and the one I'm looking at are one and the same (I don't have the CarFax report in front of me, she's 200 miles away), probably are. Thanks for the help anyway!

Well, you gotta go along with "the boss". Heck, even Harry Truman had to do that, & he was Prez for 2 terms.

Maybe they'll have Subaru incentives next summer.....

    ..... $12,500...?

It "seems" ~ that the dealers in that area, due to the weather, due to the Holidays, due to the handshaker, due to they didn't get lucky last night .. they just don't like the tC's ...... the funny thing is, they're paying aaaaaall the money for those silly little things at the auctions .. I would think at least $13,5 and $14 wouldn't hurt it ......

But, what sells well at one store doesn't mean it's going to sell well at the store 25 miles away .... it's the car biz' mate ........

I am Ready to get a new car. I have a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo, 85k, 4cyl, 2wd, Ac, 5spd and basically nothing else. When i price it on KBB, i get a trade value of 1,500. But if i price it on NADA i get a trade value of $4,300. Of coure i want the 4,300, how can i get the most out of my trade at a mazda dealer for a mazda5. I get employee pricing so no haggling on price, only on trade-in. Can i try saying and dealer will give me the same price on the car, i just want NADA value for my SUV. I appreciate any help. And why a huge difference in values.

Terry, you are da man. THese are all 2005s?

One question, how do you tell the tranny? I'm not sure what 4G, X, A NE all mean.

Strong prices though. Even if these were all automatics, and you deduct 1K for a stick, then the ones in the teens are still pulling a solid 15ish.

2 dealers in the last week (VW and SUbe) both came down at 12.5K though. I assumed it would get a bath and hit the front row, but they seemed to imply auction time (but at these prices, why not)?

Read any of the answers to the same question that has been posted hundreds if not thousands of times about why such and such book value is so much different than so and so book value. The books don't buy cars.

You also need to repost following the format that is right above the area where you post. You left out some major information that will greatly affect the value of your trade. Location for one.

If you live in the snow belt with that severly underpowered rear wheel drive SUV with a manual transmission and no name recognition, you will be lucky to get the $1500 trade value.

FYI several similar ones, 4cyl, 5 speed, a/c, 80-90K, to yours list at $3995 to $4900 ASKING at several dealers in States that almost never see snow. In which case I would venture to say that $4300 on trade is a pipe dream.

One question, how do you tell the tranny? I'm not sure what 4G, X, A NE all mean.

4G = 4cyl gas engine [this comes first]

Transmission is A (automatic) 5 (5sp, becoming ambiguous) O (overdrive, useless as a descriptor) M (manual)

Final column is "Y" or "N", that means whether it's included in Manheim's statistical samples.

The order is the same for all these, so that helps... there is also the roof: SR sunroof HT hardtop and some code for convertible that I forget.

Thanks. If you ever get tired of splitting atoms, you might have a future in used cars.

So, based on this, in December 3 sticks ran (and I am not far from Manheim, so it can be considered local). the two with twice the miles as mine (25K plus) went for 14K and 14.5K, and the one with 7K (vs. my 12K) went for the low 15s.

The red one in November for 17K must have been that special model.

So, based on this, it actually looks like Edmunds TMV and KBB are in the ballpark, and that asking for 14K for mine wasn't unreasonable, especially because a wash and vacuum (everything around here is filthy these days) is all it needs to be front line ready. I am anal about my cars if nothing else.

I don't know how anyone can buy/sell a used car without this kind of help. No wonder people wave KBB around like it is gospel.

  • I have seen mention here a couple of times that such colors as green and blue do not resell well.
Which colors sell and which don't?

    Thanks
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
look at the list of popular new car colors, and I bet that will give you an idea.

That, and anything that isn't particularly polarizing. Sure, that burnt orange Z makes an impact, until it is on th elot and no one wants to buy it.

Even blue I bet varies depending on the shade. Some darker blues are very classy, but some overly bright ones give me a headache.

    Hey Vovodan1,

I kinda agree with you in some point - that businesses needs to stay in business, however, what I don't agree with is that MOST DEALERS ARE MAKING SO MUCH PROFIT THRU ILL-SALES PRACTICES. I KNOW THIS IS A CAPITALISTIC ECONOMY AND DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY BUT WE HAVE LOST MORALS AND ETHICS IN THE PROCESS. THESE ARE HARD WORKING PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST TRYING TO GET A SAFE DECENT CAR. DOES THIS CAR SALESMEN HAVE TO WORK AS HARD ? i don't think so. If you're gifted with eloquence - you're IN.

I SOLD MY OUTSTANDING-EXCELLENT CONDITION 2005 CRV FOR $18,500 and GUESS WHAT....2 days later it was on sale for $22,900 !!!!
How much of a discount did they gave me for the car I purchased from them ?? $500!

Did they have to spent $4,000 to sell my vehicle ??? NO ! at the most, they will sell it at $22,500.

No offense Volvodan1, i'm just trying to voice my opinion like everyone else. I RESPECT YOUR OPINION.

ADVISE TO EVERYBODY: TRY YOUR TO SELL YOUR VEHICLE AT YOUR OWN TERMS (if you're dealing with a dealer!)
  • volvodan1volvodan1 Member Posts: 188
"MOST DEALERS ARE MAKING SO MUCH PROFIT THRU ILL-SALES PRACTICES" Kinda harsh generalization. I work at a reputable, ethical dealership. Many others here do also. I'm not sure where the line between "SOME" and "MOST" is, but I would be more comfortable with saying some dealerships do that.

"THESE ARE HARD WORKING PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST TRYING TO GET A SAFE DECENT CAR. DOES THIS CAR SALESMEN HAVE TO WORK AS HARD ? i don't think so. If you're gifted with eloquence - you're IN" Are you talking about a specific salesperson, or is this another generalization? Every job has hard workers and slackers. Generally in the car business, slackers are gone in 3-6 months. For the most part you have to be a hard worker to be successful in this business. Just because you are not mining coal doesn't mean you are not working hard.

For fun, let's say that the CRV is sold for $22 and they have yours for $19. It's been said before, but you've prolly never paid that little markup as a %, on a couch, boat , etc. But on a car, it's robbery.

Why are you so angry? Why is it a crime for the dealer to make $3-4K when they sell your car? They need to make around $2K per sale just to keep the lights on. Also, why is it their fault that you agreed to buy the new car for $500 under MSRP. If you didn't like it, you could have gone elsewhere. And if the car you bought is so popular that you can't get a big discount, then tough luck. It's called a free market.

Do you think real estate agents have no morals? They'll take a bigger bite out of your wallet than any car salesperson. What about furniture salespeople? They mark up furniture more than 100%.

I'm not a dealer and I have dealt with both good and bad dealers. From what you're telling us, it doesn't sound like you got taken.

I have the wants for a used 330i with the ZHP Performance Package.

There is an example in stock at the nearest local Audi dealer, in a snooty northern New Jersey suburb.

    2004 BMW 330i
    4 door
    3.0 I6/6 speed manual
    rear drive
    20k miles
    silver exterior
    black leather interior
usual options - roof, H-K tunes, besides the ZHP package with some M goodies, different gears and suspension.

Since it is at a non-bimmer store, no CPO, but it does have a 6/04 in-service date so it has considerable warranty left. Carsmack link in the internet ad.

Here's the gotcha, I stopped by today at lunch and it's not there, but at the body shop.

Supposedly, it has a "scratch" on one of the doors which needed attending to. :confuse: or

They are asking $32,995, which is on the lower side of what I have been seeing for these cars in a 100 mile or so vicinity. Since we all know paintwork on something high-end and German is generally a pretty big hit, two questions that are really one: what do you think would take this puppy home from the pound, and how much of a corresponding hit would the paint be if I had to cut this thing loose at some point? Since I haven't had the opportunity to see it yet, lets assume the work's invisible to the naked eye, but not an Elco.

Thanks in advance. This is certainly a higher buy/sell deal than retailing Mom's green Accent with a stick and no air. :P

    kirstie,
    Please accept my apologies.

    VolvoDan1, Mirth,

I appreciate your opinion. I'm not angry or being emotional over this matter. I guess when I have my own car dealership I will realize where you guys are coming from.
I agree it would be more appropriate to use "SOME" but honestly I have never found that type of integrity from a dealership in my area. I used to have a retail business that I handed over to my brother, our goal was to keep customers coming back by making a decent marginal profit that benefits both consumer and business.

Thank you for your honest opinion.
  • woodywwwoodyww Member Posts: 1,806
I'd suggest: Find out who the body shop is doing the work (owned by the dealer?), & see if you can get a record of the work done. (That could help when you go to sell the car, too).

Also, find out the best body shop in your area that does high end cars, esp. Bimmers (try one of the enthusiast forums for tips). If you like the car, see if you can take it to them for an evaluation.

A Subaru dealer in Springfield, MO has about a dozen used 2005 Outback wagons for sale (base model, automatic). This seems to be a big inventory given that MO is not exactly Subaru country, and Springfield is not a big city.

They have between 12000 and 18000 miles. Maybe rentals ??
The dealer is asking $19,788. Given the fact that new 2005 Outbacks are advertised at $21500 in St. Louis, this seems
a bit high, but probably not by much.

    What should I offer?

I have been internet shopping in Los Angeles for a 2002 525iT. Two BMW dealerships have wagons for $26.9 and 27.9. The 26.9k model has 40k miles, is titanium and the listing says it is BMW certified. They say it is in excellent condition, but I haven't seen it in person. NADA shows trade in at 23.5 and retail at 27.2.

What do you think I could get away with paying on a 2002 wagon? Are there any strategies for getting a better deal (paying cash, offering my first born, etc?)

    Thanks for your help!

    Terry-

My brother is in need of some decent cheap wheels and we found this at a local mom and pop used car lot:

    Provo, UT
    2001 Mercury Sable LS Premium
    4 dr sedan
    3.0 L 24V Duratec / Automatic
    25,150 tiny miles
    White over grey cowhides
Moonroof, alloys, PW, PL, Single CD/Cassette
Not sure on some of the other options like ABS, power pass seat, etc. Assume it's pretty loaded up.
Carfax shows a front end accident reported back in April - not classified as major, still qualifies for the Carfax guarantee.
Pop says the front bumper was scuffed up on one side so he had it resprayed. There's still a little ding on the nose right next to the grille, otherwise looks very clean. Tires are decent but not new.

Asking $8495 - seem about right, or do you think we can do better? Pop says they stepped up a bit at the auction due to the nice condition and low miles.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jason

Sounds like a decent car but it looks a lot better at $6500 personally. I am not saying that you'll get it for that but that is a lot for a 5 year old Sable IMO.

    The Wizards view may vary.
  • jaserbjaserb Member Posts: 820
Yeah, there are plenty of Sables / Taurii at that price point but very few with the decent V6 and any stuff, let alone the low miles. From what I've seen $6500 is more like an '02 Taurus SE ex-rental with the Vulcan and 50k miles.

Given the carfax not quite clean history report if it is this one, I would get the vehicle checked out very carefully. Something just does not look right about the three titled owners on the car and the time frame of the owner this year. California title history, then to a mom and pop in Utah. Unless the car was declared and sent to auction as a total loss by the insurance company, the true severity of the accident is not known by the report from California, get the car inspected.

My own gut feeling is that the car needs some serious checking out and history research and it is not worth quite what they are asking. There are two virtually identical one owner 2001 Sable LS around me with ~35K and one owner with asking prices of $7500 at a mom and pop dealership and $7900 at a Toyota dealer.

    Hey Rob ....

Up there in Naw Jawsy we got a 04 Bimmer 330i ..... it's got the Zip stuff, it's a handshaker, good color combo, miles are almost ho-hum, it's a handshaker, we got tunes, a lumpy ride and no CPO ...... if it's waaay deep in rubber, it glows in the dark, no gum stuck to the wheel and it needed nothin', then the dealer might have paid the mid/tall $26 low low low low low $27ish figure .. 1.) this one might be only a scratch or ~ 2.) this also might be "lets shoot both doors and blend the rest" -- it's hard to say without me seeing it -- if it's #2, then he paid "Mucho" less than $24 ..........

You need to get to that body shop and put an eyeball on it and actually talk to the Picasso painter on this one .... if it's a big shoot, then the paint could be showing bad in 4/6 months, it will be too late then and it would be worth about $4grand less .... look before you buy .... if it's only a scratch and they do it right (with no dust and the right tempature ) then it might be a good buy at the $29ish range .....

Thx. for the 330 update. I'm going to try to take a look at it sometime this week. The guy I saw about it in person, whose name was listed in the internet ad, didn't even know they had it. This was not at a large Audi dealer either. In any case, they weren't offering a trip to art class, so I dunno where the car canvas is at.

Now I'll bother you for something completely different. Obviously a similiar suburb of Gotham neighborhood.

    '01 Porsche Boxster S
    6 speed
45,700 somewhat large clicks on the odometer
Silver over black leather, black top
Xenons, heated seats, 6 disc CD, sport chassis
CPO at a Porsche dealer, brand new Continentals

This one I have seen, and it is in fine shape for the age and mileage. Full service and ownership records are available, and show nothing major.

The dealer is asking $31,899, which strikes me as a tad high. I'd like to think this one could be had for between $27 and $28k. BTW, I think it's been there around 3 months...

I can't believe this round of car shopping started out as looking at new Miata's. Of course, with justa little upsell on my part to the wife....look honey - we can get this for just a little more!

..... Let me tell ya what ya got here ....

It's a week before Christmas, most auctions are closed for another 3 weeks, it's got tall miles, it's 15 degree's outside (less in Chicago) and folks ain't bustin' down any doors to buy any converts right now and it's tumbleweed time ....

Translation: if they run it thru the lanes in January they will be lucky to see the low/mid $22's .. if it was the Popes personal driver, they might see the low low low low low low low low low, did I say low.? low low low $23's if it's puuuuurfect and it has a St. Christophers medal on the dash ..... these things couldn't get any colder unless your were trying to sell one in Anchorage .... I have a stupid feelin' that if someone dropped $25ish on the table it would be gone faster than Michael Vick ..... plus that 46k ain't no tear jerker ...

    .. **Terry-

My brother is in need of some decent cheap wheels and we found this at a local mom and pop used car lot:
    Provo, UT
    2001 Mercury Sable LS Premium
    4 dr sedan
    3.0 L 24V Duratec / Automatic
    25,150 tiny miles
    White over grey cowhides
Moonroof, alloys, PW, PL, Single CD/Cassette
Not sure on some of the other options like ABS, power pass seat, etc. Assume it's pretty loaded up.
...>>> Carfax shows a front end accident reported back in April - not classified as major, still qualifies for the Carfax guarantee.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jason
    ==========================================

The miles are looow, it's got all the stuff and it's a LS Premium ..... that said, we don't know if it was a $600 hit or a $6,000 hit ... Carsmack is a good basic source of info and I use them all the time -- but they forget to tell ya that part ... not because they're bad, it's only because they don't know what happens between the tow truck and the 3rd week at the body shop, and either does the owner ..l.o.l....

Like someone has mentioned here, I would have this this dude gone over with a fine tooth comb .. maybe it was just a scrunched front fender, maybe it was the fender and the rear tailights and everything in between .l.o.l. .... spend the extra $100/$150 and have a pro look at because it could save you $5,000 ......

    Hi,

Can't decide whether or not this is good deal, please advise. The car is offered by a dealer (not Volvo dealer).

    Volvo V70 T5 turbocharged wagon
    VIN: yv1sw53d712071070
Manual transmission (this is main point for me)
    85.000 miles
1 owner in NY (zip 12486)
    Clean title
Teal exterior, tan leather seats, power windows, power seats, heated seats and mirrors, 17" wheels, new tires. No third seat.

Dealer is asking $12900. Is it reasonable to ask $12000?

    Many thanks

Still say that you can do better than $8500 ... especially as it has had body damage.

There are a lot of cars out there in Alamo country.

I looked it over pretty close (my brother won't buy cars by himself anymore - long story) and other than the decent respray of the front bumper cover it looked OK. Didn't look like even the front fenders had been touched. Since I've got your attention, such as it is, any chance you could give me an idea what the guy has into it? Carsmack says he bought it 9/13/05 (was that a Friday?) at an auction in the San Fran area. VIN ends in 616680.

    Thanks,

Upstate Ny. 45000 miles, decent condition (a bit of the "soccer mom interior)as the carpet is dmaged in one spot. No major dents outside. One year old Nokian snow tires on it at the moment. Color is silver. Front brakes/rotors are brand new and other maintenance is up to date. For private sale or trade. By the way, for a private sale, I have an extended warranty thru chysler for another 15k or so that I could transfer.

I just read on Cars.Com that GM is ramping up production of their larger SUVs (Escalade, Envoy, etc) so as to introduce the 2007s in Jan. of 2006. According to the article they can't legally sell any 07s before Jan. 1 of 06. Nice. :confuse:

Without re opening the old discussion about how to count the years and resulting depreciation of a given used car, I wonder if Terry (or others) think that this will have some measurable impact on GM resale and trade-in. Also, does anyone think that GM can (or will) ignore the law and introduce 08 models in Oct/Nov. of 06? Will Ford follow GM?

At best, GM's move creates further confusion for their customers, particularly at trade-in. Since by Terry's reckoning most folks trade or lease every 2-3 years, won't there be even more customer's yelling and screaming about stolen trade-ins?

... **A Subaru dealer in Springfield, MO has about a dozen used 2005 Outback wagons for sale (base model, automatic).
    Thanks

    ===============================

Did you pull a Carsmack .....? .. the miles seem a l-i-t-t-l-e tall for regular trades-ins .... that said, Subu's get some silly money, especially this time of the year .... dealer might have paid the low/mid $17's maybe even the low low $18's depending on the condition .... they probably hit the table in and around the midish $18 figure ... you might get lucky and grab one for the low low low low low $19's with a clean history.
