    Well, then he is either a) paying ALL the money plus,which is unlikey or b) he is overallowing on the trade which is more likely.

    The small car market has dried up w/ gas below $2.00/gal

    But, if you can get $11k AND the price you want on the N/C, good job you!

    Looking at 2006 Volvo XC90 2.5L Turbo. It is Volvo Certified, has 40K miles. Does NOT have leather, heated seats, sunroof, seven passenger seating. Also it is a 2 wheel drive model. Dealer wants $18,800.

    Want to trade 2002 Toyota HL V6 AWD not a Limited model but has leather, vehicle skid control, heated mirrors, tow package.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated. Metro St. Louis area.

    Sorry about that... the Highlander has about 95K miles on it.

    Why?? Good question. I'm thinking that I can get a Volvo that I can drive for another 150K (so I'm not really concerned about resale), equipped about like I'm used to with the HL, very safe and very nice and hopefully very reliable. And hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg to make this switch. That's my thinking but I appreciate you asking because it great to hear other's perspective.

    Just wanted to give a quick update on what happened with everything with the Taurus and what we ended up getting!

    As far as the taurus, I had my son throw it on craigslist with an asking price of $4995. Car sold for $4700 after 24 hours- no muss, no fuss...guy loves the car and is thrilled with it.

    Almost bought that S60 AWD...but saw an ad for the 2009 Subaru Legacy lease deals that are going on, and it was too good to pass up for the money. Ended up picking up a 2009 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Special Edition with Spoiler, All weather floor mats, Satellite radio, and splash guards for $199/month with $1000 down. 24 month lease, 10,000 miles a year. Drove it right off the showroom floor...deal took 30 minutes...went to lunch and goofed around for 2 hours, came back, signed the paperwork, and drove the car home. Son loves it- win win situation.

    Need trade in value for:

    2000 Acura 3.2 TL. Dark blue over beige, non-navi.
    Good shape overall. 1 owner. No accidents, but normal scratches and a few dings.

    runs well, presents well, dealer serviced. Just had 2 new motor ounts. So, generally pretty clean. far\irly recent michelins.

    Downside, it has 145,000 iles on it.

    Probably going to be offer3ed for trade on a new TSX, but looking for a reasonable figure to expect.

    I must be good. It's my sisters car, and I ballparked $2,500 for her.

    with any luck, she will love the TSX and decide to get it, and sell me the TL for my son for the trade in value.

    Where are you getting the idea that Volvos are reliable?

    They can be VERY troubleprone as they age. Also, that car will attract few buyers when you decide to dump it/

    I just saw an '08 recently bought new by an acquaintence, didn't say what he paid. The FJ looked very cool, a real "boy toy". But reading the comments here, & the reviews on edmunds, cooled me off. Maybe at a great price on a used one....maybe....

    I'd love to know what car CAN'T be troubleprone as it ages.

    I'll put it simply ... it is just anecdotal, but at least I've been an owner of both ... I've had 3 volvos and 4 hondas in the family over the years. Volvo still ranks near the top of my shopping list at any given time. Honda is near the bottom.

    Craig, not sure if sonsumers reports means anything to you (I'm sure you agree with the Honda rankings!), but over the last few years, many of th emondels (at least the ones that have been around) rate very well.

    the S60 and V70/XC70 have both been excellent (well above average, and easily up with Honda) back at least 5 years.

    Oh, and if you want more anecdotal, our odyssey has been well below average in the 4 years we have had it. The Nissan it replaced was bulletproof by comparison.

    My opinions are based on the used Volvos we have sold. They just seem to have problems that other cars don't have, mostly electrical in nature. It seems they always seem to have some warning light on.

    And, to answer your question, I have fond memories of a PV 544 that I had when I was in high school. Ever see one of those?

    And we have owned a couple of "bricks" too. These are the bulletproof 240 series that I remember fondly.

    I'm glad you like the newer offerings. Still nice cars but troublesome and quirky at least in my opinion.

    I own a 1990 740 GL wagon with over 190K miles. Went to a Volvo dealer to look at a new wagon. It didn't seem to drive any differently from my old one. When I told the dealer about my old Volvo, he said to keep it.!! They are indestructible and mine never gave me any trouble on anything. Just did normal maintenance. The old ones were the best.

    Nothing wrong w/ antique Volvo's.

    Personally, I like new cars. I think there is a world of difference between the old ones and the new ones.

    Anecdotal evidence is usually the worst kind. :P

    Don't know exactly how many used Volvo's you have sold, but we sell 20-25 used Volvo's a month. My evidence is that they are good cars.
    Volvo's do need more care than Honda's do. Their systems are more advanced, they have more sensors and microprocessors than your garden variety Honda.
    Not all Volvo owners maintain their cars properly. I'd bet that you took in some pretty marginal cars to begin with. Going from a Volvo to a Honda smacks of some kind of financial issues. Most of the time, if we do lose a customer it is to another luxury brand. People usually only go down the ladder if there are affordability issues.

    Understandable.

    Another thing, though, and this is just my uneducated theory here, I would venture a guess that you (ie, Honda dealer) see a higher rate of problematic cars (as trade-ins) from all manufacturers, not just Volvos. I say this because it seems the popular cry of anyone having a problem with another brand is, "I'll just buy a Honda next time!" Of course, because they are feeding on the popular opinion that Honda's are somehow indestructible or will put up with their negligence.

    And Honda doesn't make Wagons, like the 850, V70, etc. You can't fit all the stuff you'd put into a V70 into an Accord. Or get the safety of a Volvo in a Honda, except in a Pilot maybe.

    My ex had a '95 850 with almost 200K when she sold it. It needed 2 things in all those miles: a radiator, & some sort of A/C repair for $1000, not sure what.

    When you look at the owner reviews of Volvos on Edmunds, some people do complain about smaller stuff, including electrical, but that often seems to be about light bulbs & such. Also when Hondas do get older, & start needing stuff like exhausts & brake jobs, it ain't cheap, not Mercedes prices, but I've known Honda owners to get freaked out by the price of repairs.

    We wholesale trade ins that we are fearful of and the ones that check out poorly in our shop. It's quite possible that I have just seen more than my share of problem Volvos. I once sold an S-80 to a family friend that was a financial nightmare. In the year she owned it she spent, literally thousands of dollars on it.

    I had done my best to steer her away from it but,no she had to have it. It was an especially nice one too and I really thought it would work out.

    This was one of several that caused me grief.

    Volkswagens are another story. We have had so many problems that our GM won't let us keep them unless they are still under warranty.

    Of course, they have their fans too who don't seem to have troubles.

    Not slamming Volvos, just relating MY experiences with them.

    I loved my PV 544 and if I ever see a good one for sale, I'm going to grab it!

    Interesting. I'd not have thought of that. It definitely costs to maintain a vehicle.

    I had a 145 (in '72), and it had its share of problems, but was generally an excellent vehicle to have in an Edmonton (-40 F routinely) winter.

    Traded it in on a '73 240-Z.

    Looking to purchase a 3-4 yr old Civic-certified-LX model with automatic in the philly area.( 40kish miles).We went shopping this past weekend and asking prices seem insane with dealers asking 15-17k for a 3-4 year old one when I can buy a brand new one for 17.3k.(3 seperate dealers have offered me a new one at that price)

    Logic to me indicates that a 12k bid ought to get it done (given the price of new ones) What am I missing here and what price should net me a Civic like I am looking for?

    You want the same car everybody wants. You want a low mileage Certified Civic.

    We can't find these cars and when we do, we have to pay dearly for them. They we pay to have them shipped to us. We pay for detailing, recondition and for the certification. We are usually "in them" way over book value.

    Nothing wrong with your logic if you were shopping for a used domestic or maybe a Korean car. The Hondas, especially Civics just bring crazy money at the auctions.

    Why would you want to buy a 3-4 year old Civic, when a brand new one costs the same amount of money?? I believe the new Civis come with a 3 year bumper to bumper warranty... almost as good as certified.

    1997 Maxima GXE:

    - V6 with the 5 speed manual, cloth seats
    - color is Rosewood (I think that's what they call it, it's a browny maroonish color), inside is dark grey
    - no other options
    - no accidents, single owner, garaged
    - hood and one side have mild scratches where my kids did some damage taking their bikes out of the garage, no rust, a few parking lot dings
    - interior is pretty good, the seats are still in great shape, no tears or noticeabIe wear
    - mechanically it has been fine, engine never needed anything but oil changes, no transmission problems, no electrical problems, although I just started getting a nice crunching noise when I go around corners
    - brakes and tires are recent
    - passenger front electric window no longer works, passenger side lock detached from the door and is just hanging inside the door
    - 130,000 miles
    - western Boston suburbs

    I just traded this vehicle in (the deal happened fast and I didn't think of putting it in here until after the fact!) and I am curious how well I did.

    I got $1000.

    A bit back Terry said that most people buy cars based on what their payment is going to be. Basically, buyers would rather pay a little less per month and drive a 3 year old car.

    You probably did fine as a trade-in ... but you hosed yourself BY trading it in. Those manual Maximas have a following and you probably could have seen $2500-$3K private party.

    only 12K miles on it. Seems pretty clean overall.

    what is a realistic price on this, considering it needs tires for the winter?

    I'd be looking for a tire/wheel combo in 17"..

    You can save enough by dropping down to 17" to almost pay for aftermarket wheels...

    if I got snows dedicated it wold be on new 17 wheels. Cost wise, I would probably just switch to a set of all season's on the existing wheels, and then figure out what to do with a set of $200/pop Contis with 12K on them.
