Quite a few reports of BMW dealers taking car in, and CPOing it, then selling it back to them for $25K-$26K... with the extended warranty .. so, they've got to be getting them from BMW for around $21K.. or so...
Not sure how that affects the Manheim numbers, though...

Having said that the 03 and earlier Sienna had the 3.0l V6 that had slugge issues (there's your exception), so go for the 04-06 3.3l V6 (no such problems). The van was also bigger.
The 07 and later Siennas went to a 3.5l V6 with a timing chain, so no belt to swap. Of course price will be way out of your price range.
I recommend an 04 Sienna, but for $10k it will have a lot of miles.
'04 G35X premium. 48k miles. let's say silver over black. good condition.
vs.
'05 G35x premium. 36k miles. same color combo. same condition.

In another forum, someone recommended Mazda MPV since apparently, their reliability had improved dramatically since 2000 MY redesign. I took a test drive in one this afternoon, and I liked it. A quick survey in Autotrader (within 100 miles of Boston) revealed 2 choices
1.) 2004 Mazda MPV LX with 12K miles --> asking $12,500. Has clean carfax, 1-owner and is at a mazda dealership
2.) 2004 Mazda MPV LX with 63K miles --> asking $6,900. Has clean carfax, 3-owners and is at a GMC-Pontiac-Buick dealership
What to do now??...buy high miles @ half price and save the moolah, or buy low miles and add 3K to the budget....aaarrgh! I am getting a headache
Drum roll now is on 2004 Sienna (high miles) v.s. 2004 MPV (high miles) v.s. 2004 MPV (low miles)
05 G35X figure @ $14,000 wholesale
2000 Lexus RX300 AWD, Sand metallic (kind of a beigy gold) w/ tan leather
89000 mi
All options except Nav (Nakamichi, alloys, mnrf, heated seats, roof rack, electrochromatic mirrors, etc)
New tires. Lexus maintained. Few small dings c/w age, rear bumper has some scrapes from loading cargo, one large ding on fender
Otherwise in great shape (no accidents, no smoke, no kids, garage both ends)
Many thanks!
But... hmmm... what's the deal? anonymouspost's '05 6-speed with 54k miles is worth more than an '05 G35X with 48k miles?? Usually the X adds like $1500, right? And the lower miles should help, too. Seems odd, no?

Have had my years of kid hauling van and Suburban's.
I was wondering if you could help me get a real-world assessment of teh value of my Camry. It's a lease, and I am debating whether or not I want to trade it in now with the deals that are out there, or hold on to it for a bit longer...
Here's the specs:
Outside of Philadelphia, PA
2007 Toyota Camry SE
4 dr Sedan
4 cyl FWD, Auto
13,000 miles
Gray w/ black leather
Loaded with everything but a moonroof: auto/heated front seats, upgraded stereo, 6 CD changer w/ mp3 and satellite ready, bluetooth, leather, rear spoiler
The car is in beautiful shape. I have seen the TMV here at $16-$17,000), but dealer estimates have been between $14 and $15,000. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
I don't expect to get a 100% buyout... but I have been trying to get a realistic assessment of what the car is worth. With the deals that are out there right now, I am debating whether or not it is worth to pay out a little extra to zero out the lease.
I do like the car... so I have the luxury of waiting if need be.
Thanks for your help!
Figure @ $7,000 on a trade.
Location, demand and availability among them.
A 6 speed is pretty rare and is probably worth more to the right buyer.
In certain markets, AWD adds nothing to the real value of the car.
Family #1 buys it. Realized it's too small. Trade up for a bigger van.
Family #2 buys it. Realized it's too small. Trade up for a bigger van.
Family #3 buys it. Realized it's too small. Trade up for a bigger van.
Question is, can you learn from their mistakes? :shades:
Just teasing, but the MPV was at the top of my list and friends kept telling me to get a bigger van. Eventually I caved and got the bigger Sienna, and they were right - you do end up using the space, that's what vans are for. If you didn't need the space you probably wouldn't be shopping for a van.
Reason I mention that is I realized that after I got my first van, not before.
One other thing was the engine has less power yet it's not any more efficient than the bigger V6s in the Ody, Sienna, and Caravan.
The prices are good, though. That makes the decision a little tougher. I don't think you'll regret spending a little more on a bigger van, though.
Denver Colorado area.
'07 Honda Accord EX I-4 Automatic FWD with 12000 miles. Dark Red with sunroof
Vehicle is in excellent condition. Goodyear triple treds installed at purchase (80k mileage tire).
No repairs to car.
My reason for trade is that the seats are uncomfortable for myself and wife, making longer trips to visit grandkids impossible for us.
I added on the clear bra, splash guards, fender trim, door guards, o/s temp gauge, electrochromatic mirror and the Goodyear tires.
Edmunds value is $14796, KBB is $14,900 and NADA is $15,450.
Should I expect the value to be at $14900?
Thanks in advance for any advice, estimates or suggestions.

We have been looking for a while and really would like the R version of this car, but it seems like most of these cars are WAY over-priced ($6000 to $10,000 over what you see in edmunds or kbb). What is a fair value dealer or private?
Also, does anyone know of any issues with the car we should have our mechanic be sure to check?
Thanks
Thanks,

I will list the cars and info on those I both sold, and then bought. I would like to see how close your estimate might be to what actually happened, value wise on these 4 vehicles.
In 8/2008 I traded a 2007 beige Camry CE ( beige interior ), 5 sp stick, 15K miles, dealer installed alarm the only option on the car, but car without a scratch on it, looked as good as it did when I bought it. MSRP new was approx $19Gs. Traded it at an Acura dealership for a 2008 Acura slate colored TSX, 5 speed auto, no nav or any extra's, pretty much just a regular 08 with 7K miles on it, no weird scratches or marks, perhaps a smudge here or there ( bottom of front air damn where it obviously maybe hitting a parking block or something ).
In Jan/2009 I traded a 2007 gray Ford Escape Hybrid base model, no leather, no nav, no dealer extras, 20K miles, outstanding shape, MSRP was about $28.5G's new. I traded it, at a Ford dealership, for a 2008 Mazda CX-7, robins egg blue, 10K miles, CarFax showed it was an X-rental unit from the local area. Sport model, so leather interior, some factory tinting, usual 6sp auto, AWD. Pretty decent shape for a rental return, a few of the standard weird scratches I've seen before on rental units, but nothing major, otherwise in excellent shape.
The Camry/TSX trade was in Colorado Springs, CO and the Escape Hybrid/CX7 trade was in Longmont CO.
The vehicles were traded/purchased in these pairs, so feel free to offer any values that way. What really matters I suppose is just the differential I should have paid or they should have paid me for the deal, but if you want to offer values individually or as just the differential on each pair, thats fine.
I'm pretty sure I paid more than I should have for the Acura, but I like it, and thats the way it goes sometimes. Feel free to speculate on how much money would have been made by the dealer, off of me, in your calculations, based on what you think is fair.
I will then compare that to the real numbers and see how badly I got hosed.
And on these, condition and miles has a huge impact on price. They are fairly rare, but pretty specialized as to who wants them. And a lot of people do modifications.
There are a couple of volvo and R specifi forums that you can find on the internet that have tons of info on these, and some pricing help. But Volvomax can probably help there anyway.
But for sure, dealers jack these way up. especially one dealer just west of Philly on the main line.

Condition:
Interior is in really good condition..drivers seat has a little wear on the left bolster but not bad at all. Exterior has a few nicks on the front and rear bumper (there is one area where I backed into my mom's car in the driveway leaving a 2 inch area where I had to touchup...clumsy me!).
Tires - 18,000 miles on current set of tires
Brakes - original brakes, dealer said good pad life during last oil change
Maintenance - done at dealer, up to date
Vehicle I would trade this in for: 2005 Acura TL Non-Navi
- Acura dealer asking $18,997 (would like to get that down a bit - $18-18.5K - if possible of course)
- 33800 miles
- Anthracite (dark gray) exterior, gray leather interior
- Certified Pre-Owned vehicle
- Automatic
I checked out the vehicle today when the dealership was closed, and from what I can tell the exterior and interior are in very good condition - some wear on the driver seat, and a couple nicks on the exterior but nothing major. Looks like new tires (some off brand though).
Thanks in advance!
They don't like their name mentioned.
I think I know that dealer you are referring to and they had one for $27,000 and it had more mileage than this one....
Thanks for the info.
That car is probably more in the $13-14,000 range.
I would think that $20k would be right for a private party car.
R wagons are hard to price because they are quite rare and tend to attract rabid Volvo fans.
Values for small cars were a lot different than now.
As for your Jan deal, you should have come close to an even trade.
The Ford should have brought $16-17k and retail on the Mazda should have been close, maybe $18-19k.
Private party should be in the $10-12k range.
An avg 60k Ody is anywhere from $11-12k.
I'm thinking $4-5,000 tops.
The Acura should be under $18,000
At Auction a dealer would of course try to get an average car closer to the rough book value because he makes his money on the buy not the sell. Your price of 10K seems on the low side, I would think 11K for a clean undamaged car would be closer to reality and you would have to look hard for that.
Here’s the skinny on the car:
Location: Reno, NV

Engine: 2.0l V-TEC
Driveline: FWD
Mileage: 20000

Major Options: None, NO nav or summer tire options.
Condition:
Interior: Better than average for a car with 20k miles - no tears or rips, just needs a detail
Exterior: No dings, scratches, scuff marks, looks new after a wash (seriously) – this car has not been touched by anything other than the road and bird crap
Tires – Original set, 60%+ tread
Brakes – 70% left
Maintenance – All up-to-date
I know I’ve taken the bulk of the depreciation hit already and it probably won’t depreciate this much over the next 4 years+ but any numbers/advice would be appreciated. Thank you!
Second, you should NEVER assume that you will have day 1 equity in ANY nw car you buy, unless you put a ton of money down.
Third, all cars have taken hits on depreciation due to the economy. Honda's are no different.

What's it worth? Not that I want to let her go!
Wasn't there a dually here that went from $52k to $28k in even less time? New car smell is expensive.
KBB is usually high so that's actually what surprises me.
You can probably private party that car for $17-18k or so.
Thing is, at those prices you are competing with many new cars.
I was curious as to whether this is one of those unusual situations where the auction prices on these things would actually be higher than KBB's trade-in value.
You can normally expect an approximate value on Honda's of around 50% after 5 years of its original valuation, so I'm hoping if I keep the car (which I really should!) that I'm only going to lose 5k or so over the next 4 years.
After all, one of the reasons why I bought the car was because of Honda's reputation of making vehicles with great resale value.
I do recall a study of 4 year old models and the Prelude had the highest residual values of the whole lot, at 51%.
So 50% after 5 years sounds a bit optimistic.
Maybe if you private-party sell a Honda, and got a deal when it was new, it's possible. I would not count on it, though.
Good luck.
If it didn't want premium fuel I might have made you an offer! :shades:
The ideal Civic would actually be the Euro 5 door, for me. Maybe even a diesel, if diesel prices near me ever drop (still nearly a buck more than gas).
