Does the regular 8 Audi series compare with a BMW 540 or E class? I think most purchasers who are looking at a Audi 8 are also looking at the 7series BMW and the S class.
You might have something on the XJR. The vanden plas supercharged version should compare against the S55.
M5. The M5 has better technology, better
overall performace, outstanding looks
(compared to an off the shelf E320 look of
the E55). The XJR is out of question becuz
Jag's are junk, bad depreciation and sub
par reliability. Not to mention they are owned
by Ford (a BIG Zero in value). The only
resonable peer to the M5 might be the E55,
but in a scale with only these two vehicles,
the M5 is lightyears beyond the E55 in every
category. And in responce to singh5 for
saying
"so do u want pureperformance, or do u want luxury and comfort along with performance"
YOU are kidding yourself to
even believe a BMW has lower comfort than a
MB. Either that or you probably have an E55,
or its on order. If its still not arrived yet
your in luck. This is the prime oppurtunity
to cancel the order and call up your local
BMW dealer instead. I bet u cant even get
CLOSE to reproducing the zero-60 times of
your car...
m5 - compact sedan - manual - 0-60 in 5.1s
e55 - medium sedan - automanual - 0-60 in 5.1s
where is your big difference???
These two cars are exceptionally close to each other. Both are WONDERFUL vehicles. You get the M5 is you are extremely performance oriented or a BMW nut. Yout get the E55 is your performance oriented but want an Auto due to everyday driving conditions, or are a Mercedes nut.
Take your biased opinions elsewhere. They will just be laughed at here.

Personally after seeing some spy photos, I think that the board is right about not approving it.
Also the fact that it is so discrete is really nice. I kept the little spolier thingy, but got mine without the M5 logo. I wish they would have allowed me to remove the m5 emblems from the side panels, but I've ordered 5 series rubber strips that 'should' fit in place of the original ones.
The folks at dinan are already working on the rechip and several european's (I'm in the US) have already reworked the chips making this already aggressive beast completely untameable!
Interesting news from dingolfing:
A little bird told me that the next "supercar" from BMW will ALSO be based on the 5 series frame but will incorporate a V12 (like in the 850). This should be very nice, but is several years off. It's unlikely you'll see an M7 ever since the 7 series is just to big to be nimble enough to handle the performance needed to be given it's "M".
the jag xjr. The e55 is as fast as the m5 in 0-60
and top speed. Both cars weigh about the same. The
e55 has an automatic and is still as fast as the
6-speed manual m5. Imagine how fast the e55 would
be if it had a manual transmission! I have read in motor trend that the
0-100-0 times are exactly the same for the e55 and the m5. The only thing the m5 has over the e55 is maybe its roadholding, but only by a small margin at about .01 g's. The e55 is nicer, more comfortable, and bigger and hey, it's a Mercedes one of the best cars in the world. Just because the m5 comes with a 6-speed manual does not make it the best sport sedan in the world. The e55 is better than the m5 in most ways. Even if it comes with only in a 5-speed automatic. The e55 is the best sport sedan in the world.
You most likely can get the Yellow if you special order the M5.
Besides ACS and Dinan there are quite a few companies that modify BMW. Go get a European Car Magazine and look them up.

Driving my 1995 Porsche 911 non turbo,, a BMW M3 gave me a heck of a run on the beltway at night,, he passed me at 130 mph,,, I was impressed... Can you imagine what the E55 or M5 are capable of especially if both best the performance of the M3?
I just may trade my Porsche in for one of these 2 rockets.
I have a '92 500E if you're interested send me an e-mail

I will keep monitoring the papers, net and Autoweek for any good deals,, I hate to say this,, but I saw a new 2000 Camero SS (320 hp) and it brings out the 70's in me,, it looks good and I would love to test drive it. I bet that would satisfy my M5 urge for a few yrs and at $28K to boot. I know this is a sophisticated BMW forum but,,, does anyone have these desires,, I am 48 and still have a penchant for the old pony cars....
Anyway, my decision on which one I like best was made out of pure vanity. I think the Jag's beautiful. I think a couple of years down the road I'll end up getting one of the old series III XJ6's and putting british parts into my monthly budget :-) ANyway, I'd love to have any of the cars we've discussed here.
