ML: About $11k at the block. With the needs it has right now, you'd probably get an offer from a dealer of $9k-$9500. Without knowing the source/cause of the oil leak, its impossible for me to give you further advice on private sale.

So tracked down the oil leak to the crankcase ventilation valve (breather cover). OEM part is $80 and local indy shop thought about hour labor. So basically $200 to get it fixed. Shopped the vehicle to a couple of dealers and got offers of $11K to $11.5K, which doesn't seem all too bad.

Trying to determine if fixing the leak is worth while or not if I decide to sell privately? I don't think I would recoup much by putting new tires on, so I'll leave that. Thoughts?

I'd jump on those dealer offers. Do you get a tax benefit trading where you live? I do in NJ, so for a car that I'd have to put $700 into (between tires and oil leak fix), detail it up, advertise it, deal with tire kickers and dreamers, only to HOPEFULLY get $13k, it is not nearly worth it in the end if a dealer is giving me $11k plus the $770 tax credit.

If you're going to trade it then leave the leak alone. If you're going to sell it privately then spend the $200 and get it fixed because potential buyers will likely take it for an inspection and the leak will be found and you'll either have to fix it or their mechanic will scare them into thinking it's more than what it is and you'll end up dropping the price more than the cost of the repair itself, or it'll scare away a potential buyer.

Interesting. Must not have been Manheim, because its not showing up for either time it hit the block. I do find it a little concerning that one dealer bought it, held it for less than a month, and cut their losses and resold it at auction.

Anyway, an average condition blue one with 60k sold for $20,300. 2 others that were reported as below average sold for $18,750 and $18,600. All 3 say "6G" as the trans, so no idea if auto or manual.

Yes, I saw the one dealer only had it for a short while. If I do get serious I'll have my Service Advisor give it the once over- both dealers are in the same group.

There would be a sales tax benefit if I trade it in and purchase a vehicle from the dealer. Basically would only get taxed the difference between sale price and trade in price. Actually went ahead and bought another vehicle from out of state, so no benefit.

I'll probably just get the leak fixed. I figure I'll try to sell privately for a few weeks, and if no takers, then I'll just sell it to the dealer.

Thanks for the advise and feedback!

I'll guess they paid around $18k for it. So not a bad asking price. Depending on where they got it from, you might be able to knock another grand off.

    Helping a friend out here.

He's looking at lightly used Grand Cherokees.

Specifically, he's considering one near me that I may check out for him (in the Denver area).

    2014 Grand Cherokee
    Summit Model
    V6/4x4 (Quadra-drive)
    9,840 miles

Ad says it's loaded with every option - Harmon Kardon, Suede Headliner, Heated/Cooled Leather, HIDs, etc.

It's being sold privately, so I'm going under the assumption he's looked to trade it already, so I'm curious what trade value would be on something like that, and thus what reasonable private party would be. Seller is asking $42,950.

    Thanks for any insight.

trade value? Up to about $39k. $43k is about fair retail on it. I wouldn't pay more than $42k private party.

Do you guys not get tax credit on your trade-ins? Here in NJ, that would put me within spitting distance of $42k realized value when trading it.

Thanks Q - my friend (who lives in Utah) is looking to purchase this car, and he's not trading anything in, so going private party seems a good way to go.

The info you provided jives with the seller's asking price, so that helps a lot.

No, I'm talking about the guy selling a $42k Cherokee privately. It almost never makes sense to private sale something that expensive if you are getting another vehicle and your state offers a tax credit on trade-ins.

Very good question! Autocheck just shows registrations and inspections. I told her to run a Carfax on it. The Carfax ad says"25" reports. Her 18 year daughter found this car on her own. Hmmm.

    Interesting. Very.

Col 1 = date of sale
    Col 2 = location
    Col 3 = "Regular" ???
    Col 4 = sales price
    Col 5 = miles
Col 6 = condition (Avg, Above, Below)
    Col 7 = color

What is Col 3, which in all instances above says "Regular" ??

I'm thinking "Regular" is equivalent to "Base"- there was an upgrade version available- the Laguna Seca.

Answered that above. Its the type of sale. It is usually Regular or Lease.

For a co-worker. Her daughter is looking at a 2007 Cobalt LT coupe neat the Mass/NH border. Red, 95,000 miles, auto, power windows and locks. No leather, no moonroof, no alloys. Autocheck says one owner, New England auction in November. Might need front struts and rear brakes. Dealer wants $5900. TMV says $5400. What say the experts? Thanks

I can't see back to November, but the recents with those miles have been in the $3500-$4500 range. Asking price would be fair without the needs it has if its clean otherwise and no bad history, so I'd deduct for the work for starters.
