And then there's the highly glorified Tesla. Elon Musk is essentially a "government contractor" according to this story with SpaceX, Solar city, and Tesla. I heard a program talking about 8 billion given to him and his companies.
Are we complaining about Musk's receiving federal monies? LOL

No more worn out than the fear-based "the world would have ended" argument you are rehashing to justify the unjustifiable bailouts. Yes, Chrysler was no more deserving of any government assistance than was GM. Ford maybe a bit more worthy since they didn't need direct handouts.

I don't pay taxes to Ohio, therefore what Ohioans choose to give to Honda doesn't concern me one bit. I'm sure they don't do it out of the goodness of their hearts. I pay federal taxes so indeed the money given and lost to GM has not been forgiven by me, nor many Americans. Look at the bashing the Democrats that voted for bailouts have taken in the last couple of elections! Coincidence? I think not.

I don't think Tesla should receive subsidies, but I also wonder how much bigger they'd be in a world without GM and Chrysler.

But he was setting them up to pay more because he wasn't going to give them much for their Lucerne and they had no idea of real trade-in value.

I have. I have had excellent experiences with my Honda's and Audi's. Testing VW now with the wife's new ride. I know VW doesn't have the quality control Audi does, but so far so good except for:

1. The engine fan has stayed on a few times after turning the car off, as if it was 100 degrees out (it wasn't, it was cool), or she had just climbed a mountain at full throttle (never did that either). It goes off after a few minutes I'm told. Seems either a sensor is off or diesel engines like to be cooled down after being turned off? Does anyone know?
2. the back of the muffler finish is.... to put it lightly... ugly. Never should have passed QC, but apparently it is acceptable to whoever is the VW QC manager in Mexico. It is only noticeable to people with attention to detail and who look down and low at a car.

one of these days I need to remember to poke my head under my Jetta to inspect the muffler. Just out of curiosity, since it really makes no difference to me!!

I bet that the diesel is set to keep the fan on longer. No clue why, but easy enough to ask the dealer.

If something unexpected happens throughout the term of the lease or loan, people will likely be hit with a substantial sum in order to get out of the transaction."

Why deny yourself? Get whatever you want whenever you want. Don't be responsible, the government will bail you out. Those rich guys are keeping you down! :@

Salesman called multiple times Monday and Tuesday to tell me that they would bump their offer for my Eclipse from $7300 to $9000 as requested. Deal done. They were even able to beat my credit union's 1.99% with 1.89%. Everything taken care of in a few hours by the dealer while I daydreamed out in the lot looking at cars and trucks. My absolute limit was my car and $26k out the door. I got it for my car and $25780.

Good experience. Salesman was a young guy who was just aggressive enough to keep me interested. He gave me a smile when he said that he had gone over his boss's head to get me the extra for my trade. Other than that he kept the puffery to a minimum. He'll get all 10s on the survey. I'll bird dog for him if I can.

Interesting experience. I put all my hot pants emotions aside and had resigned myself to keeping the Eclipse which was without a doubt the best car I've ever owned. Would have been happy keeping it. Walked on the first offer and I think that's what got me the deal. Seems that the door is the most powerful negotiating tool. Got $3500-4000 off depending on how you figure it.

Being dispassionate isn't as much fun though.

That is GREAT, farmer. Price was outstanding and trade value stupendous. Car is gorgeous, OF, simply gorgeous. You have been yearning for this car for over 6 months and because of you patience and perseverance, you got what you wanted for the price you could afford.

So what are the details? Premium package? Shaker stereo? Automatic? I see it's a 5.0

OF, in case they didn't tell you, there is a USB port in the little console. Put about 800 of your favorite MP3 songs on a memory stick and plug it in and hit AUX on the stereo and will play them in alpha, random or stick order.
The engine looks good too. I had mine about a month and ended up at a car show. Somebody said lets raise the hood. Next thing you know people were taking pics of the Coyote engine with all the chrome and big 5.0.

2-3 years? Try a decade! I first wanted a Mustang back in 2005 when the new style came out. Went so far as to rent one from Hertz to try it out. The V6 back then was horrible and I was a little too timid (and broke) to get the GT. 3 years latter I got the Eclipse as a compromise. Now I've come full circle.

Ha ha you forget who you're talking to. MP what? Took me 20 minutes today to set the clock. My son was wowed by all the technology but he didn't even know what a 5.0 was. (Is he really my son?)

The car is a base model and other than not having leather seats I couldn't see one thing I wanted on the Premium edition. Not to mention I couldn't afford another $4k. It's automatic. I know what the true enthusiasts will say but I didn't enjoy driving the stick and I'm never sure how long my knees will be functional. The Sports mode is promising to be a blast.

I agree, that engine looks like a work of art.

Well, look at it from my perspective, I already came to the conclusion that Chrysler (and the other Big 2 are lumped in for the most part by being guilty by association), will never seen another penny from me in my lifetime. The decision was made long ago and will not be revisited or reconsidered (again, in this lifetime). So in essence, I have moved on, like I said, to Honda, Audi, & VW. I have considered many makes and models but just not the Big 3 seriously. Ford and GM may be up for a parole or probation hearing every 10 years or so, but so far they have remained in prison in the "non-serious consideration" category. Chrysler is dead to me.

So yes, I have moved on.

Now, when you steal my tax money in a government takeover of sorts, you reopen the case, but that was outside of my control. The government essentially made a liar out of me never giving another dime to these guys.

Absent the bailouts, these companies would be extinct, and I wouldn't have batted an eye nor needed to revisit these things. Due to the bailouts, the companies still exist, so it makes it a bit harder to move on, but I have.

Nothing has changed from the early 2000's when this decision was made; only had to revisit the wounds with the bailouts. When the next inevitable bailout is needed (history repeats itself), I'll bring this all up again, but until then, this will be my last word on the subject.

The killer with leasing is that the lease doesn't necessarily end because you do something drastic as dying. We had dad's Buick for months afterwards. I'd drive it sometimes to keep miles off my car. If dad had liked the car I'd have bought out the lease but of all the cars he had he hated that one. Had it been his last deVille I'd be pulling a lemko.

I got the Mustang itch real bad so I went back to the dealer where I test drove a stick equipped 5.0 last November. I'm a reluctant standard shift driver and wasn't impressed with the exhaust sound so I let the search languish. Until this week.

Good luck with the purchase, my first new car was a red 81 Mustang. It was a good car.

While not as tragic as RIchard's scenario, quite a few years ago I was driving along a 4 lane road. It was sunny. I was probably going UNDER the speed limit as it was rush hour (30 MPH in a 35 MPH zone). I was taking my Father home after his visit to the cardiologist.

Your story reminds of a similar scenario that happened to me. I was returning home from work one day and I was stopped at a stop light. I was the first car in the right lane on a road with two lanes in each direction. Also at the light going in our direction was a bicyclist.

Traffic going across cleared and the cyclist crossed against the light and proceeded down the road. We got the green light a few seconds later and we proceeded to go. As I approached cyclist he suddenly made a left turn to cross the street without looking back to see if it was safe to do. I had to slam on my brakes to miss him and missed him I did by less than a foot.

Unfortunately the car in the lane next to me made contact with the cyclist. I stayed around and gave a statement to the police.

I was expecting to be called up as a witness to a court case but it never happened.

I don't think that GM or Chrysler would have disappeared. Without a bailout they simply would have slipped into bankruptcy and then been restructured and continued operations. Both were to big with too many assets to be dissolved and eliminated. It most likely would have been better for both to have gone that route.

There are companies now that work with dealers and they will insure your lease. If for example you die in year one they will take over the lease. Cost starts at about $250, and varies depending on lots of factors.

I say, don't bother...lease the car and drive it, if something happens to you let your loved ones sort it out.

Then there are companies that will break a lease. Charge about $300 but you have to sweeten the pot on your lease.....like pay someone $2000 to take it over. Can get expensive if you have negative equity involved.

What a mess that could be!
