    Thanks a lot qb -- that's strong.

What with playing credit card games etc, I paid $20,380 +TTL for it two years ago.
    Holy smokes, that's good news.

Looking at 2016 Audi S6, Sepang blue with black interior. Premium plus with black optic, drivers assist, carbon fiber inlays, looks like sport exhaust, LED headlights, 2600 miles. Has base stereo (not even Bose) and looks like light grey headliner. Car is near Atlanta. I'm in Bloomington IN. Any idea of value?

is this actually a pre-owned used, or some kind of dealer demo car (so not previously titled)?

WOW! That car is striking! What was the original MSRP? It is in GA, so be aware of the ultra high (BS) dealer doc fee of $700 or so.

snazzy looking car. those wheels would never survive a winter in NJ. I always wonder how something that new and low miles ends up at a used car place, but every car has a story!

and Bradd, good news. Saw this in the listing: "*MOMENTUM MOTORCARS IS THE ONLY LUXURY DEALER THAT NEVER CHARGES ANY DEALER FEES...EVER! "

Purchased at Palm Beach auction on 12/2 for $67,250. So the sale price is a good one. Guess sitting there for near 3 months will motivate the seller. ;)

    Q,
A couple of months you assessed my 2010 BMW 535i xDrive wagon at around $17K.
    Here it is again:
White with Black leather interior. Almost every option; Sport package, comfort access, PDC, HUD, Nav. etc.
    89,xxx miles in Northern, VT
Serviced mostly at dealer and no real issues. VG body and interior.
Lately I've been getting offers in the $13.5K range. Did it drop or am I being lowballed?

    it is an automatic, yes?

It isn't $17 anymore, but $13.5 is pretty low. $14.5k-$15k is more like it if the history is clean and it has no needs.

13,500 seems a little low from what I am seeing but not drastically considering seasonality and a less desirable color.

I would think $14,000 to $15,000 depending on the state of your consumables on the car.

Maybe someone already made the recommendation, but this seems to be a great private sale car. There's a small, yet enthusiastic, market for BMW wagons. It's one of those where you'll only get a few calls, but one of them will buy the car.

Hello all. Any thoughts on a trade in value?

I'm in metro Detroit, Michigan. 2006 Hyundai Sonata LX, V6 with heated leater seats. Overall in good shape for a 10 year old car. One small ding above the passenger side doors from me dropping a kayak a few months ago. ding is about the size of the end of my thumb, not cracks or rust around it. Inside is clean, no cracks or tears in leather, but it's 10 years old and not as soft as it used to be. Mechanically in great shape. A year ago I had most of the fluids flushed and the engine inspected, and had to change the driver side automatic window system as it froze on me. Mechanic is an independent and was impressed at the shape of it.

    87,500 Miles.

Autotrader has some dealers selling the same car with various miles and options ranging from $6,000 to $10,000 with most around $8,000. Dealer offered me $2,500 to trade it in. I'd probably give it to my niece before I'd trade it at that value.

No sunroof or other options that I can think off. Edmunds estimate value is: Trade in $3,800, third party $4,686, Dealer price $6,157.

EDIT: Color white exterior, light tan leather interior. Dark brown wood trim accents.

$2500 is fair enough. So either give it to your niece, or put it up for sale yourself for $4995 and take the first $4k cash that comes along.

Edmunds is a little nutty with that trade value. Dealer retail is about right, which wouldn't give a helluva lot of profit if they paid $3800 for it, then had to service it, detail it, pay commission, keep the lights on, etc, etc.

No sport package means no sport exhaust and no sport differential.

    Is that a deal breaker?

Does anyone have a VIN checker to look up options?

Is sport something that would show up on VIN?

General VIN decoder from Audi World.

No mention of Sport anything. Are the exhaust tips something that can be done separately from other sport options? If not, then maybe the answer is yes. Is a visual inspection possible?

if it isn't on the sticker, it isn't going to be on the car. Maybe those tips came on a non sport too? Or something that could easily be added as an accessory.

Dealer says they look like black chrome (not painted). Maybe just finishers / covers added???

I rechecked and get $78340 MSRP - that makes it seem like less of a good deal.  But it was bought at auction for 67250.  I wonder if it would take a hit at resale or trade in time due to the color?

That VIN decoder doesn't list option packages for some reason.  I had tried it earlier
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,493
well, if your other option is a new one, what is the best price you can get there since it is current MY? If you are looking at a $5k delta, worth it to take 2,500 miles.

    Eh, more like $2500

Got the Grand Caravan "craigslist" clean and got the number back from the Kia dealer. $1,325, but they'll give me $2,000 for it on trade.

I'm okay with $2,000 on trade, it's the other $3,000 that we're apart on that's the issue. But since the van seems to be a good runner, I like the idea of selling to someone who needs a car and I can let them get the benefit of the low price instead of the dealer. Dumped the last van on a kid (thanks Grandma!) and I'm sure it helped him get started on his trade school plan without getting too deep in debt from day one.

Dumb question, how do you safely sell a used car yourself? Lot of wackos now a days. Do you let someone test drive a car on their own and risk they steal it? Or go with them and risk worse? (I live a literal stones throw from Detroit, though not a terrible part of Detroit but close enough to the terrible parts). I've always traded my cars in and never tried to sell, and always purchased at a dealer.

Depends on the area a bit. I sold two cars 18 months ago up in the UP from my house, but everyone knows everyone up there. Everyone is broke, but that's another story.

I helped a TX friend buy a pickup last year here in Las Cruces. Nice seller, met at his house, didn't mind dropping the truck off at my mechanic for an inspection (I never drove it but he would have been okay with that), and my friend wired money to my bank. Met the seller there and exchanged the money for the keys and title.

If you don't want people coming to your house, you can meet them at a busy parking lot. I've always let the buyer test drive without me along, but again, depends on the area. Helps to snap a photo of the buyer, their driver's license and insurance card and email it to yourself or a friend.

  • qbrozenqbrozen Member Posts: 33,754
yeah, it really depends. I never had an issue with someone coming to my house. I mean, hell, what is the difference? They can just drive by and see my cars in the driveway, and nothing is stopping them from coming onto my property if they are driven to do wrong, so it doesn't seem any more risky to me than any normal day. As for the test drive, if I get a good feeling from them AND if they are leaving their car behind that is worth at least what mine is, I'm fine with them taking a drive without me. I've got the collateral there to cover it. I only ever got nervous once when I let a father and son take out the 540i I was selling. They were gone for damned near an hour, and I really wasn't too keen on his miled up Tahoe. haha.

I go with my gut, on how safe it seems from the initial contacts. I have met at a parking lot nearby, but the downside to that is, when they no show, you are sitting around a parking lot! mostly though, I have just had them come to my house after being "screened".

I never let them go without me (just the way I feel about it!) except when I was selling my Miata to a guy buying it for his daughter. I let them take it out alone, since there was no room for a 3rd in that one.

I met a woman in a grocery lot one time to look at her van. Worked out well for me - her car wouldn't crank after it warmed up so I just gave her a jump and went back home.

One weekend in Boise I swapped my Outback for a Miata with the proviso that it would pass IM (the owner lived in the adjoining county that didn't do emissions checks).

Had fun tooling around over the weekend but it flunked IM on Monday morning and the CEL went on. I called the guy and swapped cars back an hour later. His Miata got a full tank of gas and his kids had washed my Outback over the weekend. Good guy, like most people in the world. Even in Detroit. :)

Our Credit Union lets members park used cars in their lot with a sign, and I meet potential buyers there. I let them drive it, never had a problem. I sold my last car to an acquaintance so of course he just came to the house.

I am the executor, but I can't sign my mothers name on the title.
Don't know if I have to provide documentation to go along with the signed title.

Edit: I would some info on the CT DMV website. I have to include a form along with the title.

One of my employees passed away unexpectedly a few years ago. His cousin was handling his estate, and I think it took about a year to get everything sorted out through probate and whatnot. Finally, when he was ready to dispose of the various estate assets, I took the employee's car (which I had stored for the prior year+) to a dealership and met him there. If I recall correctly, the cousin signed it with his name, then followed with "executor of the estate of [employee's name]," then attached a copy of the notarized authorization document that assigned him as executor.

All told, it was a fast and simple procedure to actually process the sale.

I could use some help on this car: a 2008 BMW manual wagon with 100k. Having owned bmw's before, I know it's entering a higher cost maintenance phase (for example, it will probably need a clutch and suspension work sometime in the next 20k).

Dealer is asking $12k. I would get into it for $8-9k, but that's probably too far apart.

Any guesstimate on what they are into it for? I think they bought it at auction early January 2016. More info here:

I'd be more concerned regarding the cooling system on an E90 when it hits 120,000 miles; the clutch may be good for another 50,000 miles- especially if you remove the clutch delay valve.

Id wait for what Q says, but I'd guess the dealer is in around $6500 tops. It's not AWD, it's miled-up for a BMW, and I didn't see any special equipment options on there.

What?? Gee, they could have bought a 5 series AWD for that....but yeah, sure enough, I checked Carfax, and the car was traded to Jerry's Ford in Alexandria, who sold it at auction, and then Pearson bought it.

Hmm...I would have thought $9995 dealer retail here in California. I'm seeing two here at 125K miles or so in the low 8s. I guess things are different in VA.
