HenrynNow that I'm 65, the idea of retirement crosses my mind. And where to live once retired is very high on the list of what I think about.

There are 10,000 boomers a day turning 65. The last will not join them until 2030. I think you are going to see some serious appreciation in any property that is in a safe desirable location. Hawaii has a lot of homes on one acre lots for under $250k. Many built just before the bubble burst and are now in foreclosure.

Hopefully more of the automakers offer diesel in the CUVs that are so popular with Seniors.

"FCA's shares dropped sharply in trading on Monday morning following reports that German regulators may have discovered that FCA's diesel engines were cheating on emissions testing."

Why Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Is in Diesel-Powered Trouble in Germany (fool.com)

Yet another reason why VW and Fiat should merge. :)
  • gagricegagrice Member Posts: 31,450
VW should just buy Jeep and Ram, let Fiat keep the rest of their crappola. They could do well with both.
  • henrynhenryn Member Posts: 4,289
VW really needs trucks and SUVs to add to their lineup. And of course, Jeep is Jeep (speaking of the Wrangler).

Has VW had enough of our craziness??

Volkswagen Challenges U.S. Jurisdiction in Emissions Scandal

Volkswagen is challenging allegations made by the Justice Department over its diesel emissions scandal, questioning the American authorities’ jurisdiction and contending that the accusations against it do not justify penalties.

It also challenged the court’s jurisdiction over Volkswagen, and over its subsidiary Audi, saying that cars in the United States were sold through local businesses and not the parent companies. It said that the statute of limitations voided any conduct at Volkswagen before 2010.

Over all, the Justice Department “fails to allege facts sufficient” for any penalties, Volkswagen lawyers said. But the carmaker described the filing as part of the legal process, and said it “has no bearing on Volkswagen’s commitment to resolving the U.S. government’s claims.”

Hm, my guess is that VW is trying to limit their exposure to owner's lawsuits, since they appear relatively close to a settlement with the Feds. Maybe they are hoping to sidestep some of the individual state's claims too.

What obvious nonsense from VW. They are, apparently, above all laws...

The two CARB tests I had to take STILL does not measure diesel emissions!?

It really stems from the warning on the three original tests! They only measured the cars tested !

While it has always been fun to drive, I had a real treat of a three hour ride in the back of the 2012 VW Touareg TDI! Other than that, a very slow diesel news day. RUG/ULSD are the same price!

A pretty rare occurrence (for me anyway) to get to ride in the back of my own vehicle. Sounds like you enjoyed your time there!

I think you may have hit the nail on the head!

So in terms of VW financing, yes and no! I would guess they have less problems with subpar financing. So if you qualify for 0% financing why would you not take advantage? Aka, does the competitor offer the same terms ?

There's a lot of cheap money around. Most car loans are running from 0.9% to 3ish though, I think, for top tier credit scores.
  • ruking1ruking1 Member Posts: 19,826
It also doesn't hurt to get the iris business travel rate of $.54 per miles.

One of the credit unions I belong to is offering 1.59% with 20% down. Which I always do. I guess if someone offered me "free money" (that is, 0% financing), I might try to finance the whole enchilada.

Every time I have been offered 0%, there has been a alternative offer of $1,000 or more cash back, and I always take the cash back. I don't think that's true here (the current VW offer), so I would take the 0% and try to finance 100% of the price. After all, why not?

Yes, I know you will be upside down on the loan for most of the life of the loan. But if you take the money you would have put down and invest it, then that is not really a problem. I say invest, as opposed to wasting on wine, women and song. Which reminds me of an old joke ...

VW sold me the Touareg TDI at the price I got from USSA. It was lower than CarMax or any other dealer. Well below invoice. We were ready to write the check and the salesman said you want Zero down 0% for 5 years? They financed the whole $54k that included 8% sales tax, title and registration. What's not to like? They filled the tank with diesel and we left without spending a dime. First new car ever where the dealer filled the tank. That includes 6 new GM, 2 new Fords and 2 new Toyotas. Going on 3 trouble free years, best vehicle I have EVER owned.

From here on out, there can be nothing but supersensitivitivity on affected Touared TDI models! At the same time, it's hard for me to really visualize anything that can happen to it for at least 50,000 more miles or up to the 150,000 mile mark. This CUV ranges from being a really nice towing vehicle to a beast @ autobahn speeds.

The wife is really liking the compact CUV, MB GLK 250 BT. It is also hard to visualize anything happening to it before 100,000 to 150,000 miles mark.

You got a love the diesel power trains.

Yes, exactly what I was speaking of when I said given the right circumstances I would finance the whole enchilada.

And I'm trying hard to remember here, but I can't remember the last time I purchased a new vehicle and did not get a full tank of gas. I can easily remember the last 5 or 6, and they came with a full tank.

Can't remember now, but at least one automaker puts that on the Monroney - "full tank of gas". Prius for sure. This 2015 Golf Monroney says fuel is extra.

Maybe because Texas owns all the gasoline.. B) I have bought new from dealers in AK, WA, OR, AZ & CA. This was a first for me with the full tank of fuel. And he put it on the dealers CC almost hundred bucks at $4 a gallon. All the rest were delivered with nothing but fumes in the tank. Even the VW dealer in Portland OR that sold me the Passat TDI in 2005 just laughed when I asked.

Looks like Toyota will do anything to get rid of their Prius inventory. Don't want their batteries to die on the lot.

That, and they use so little fuel, the tanks are something like 11 gallon size.

My list of "new" cars is pretty small, but they both came with full tanks. Granted, I bought them both from the same dealer, so that shouldn't be much of a surprise. The only other car we purchased from a dealership, which was a used car, also came with a full tank. But, I had to practically goad them into it. I guess they had the last laugh, though, since they overfilled my oil and blew just about every gasket on the engine. :'(

Lol! The 2003 TDI it's really iconic one! 187, 000 miles, the truth this is little to report! Yes ive replaced some parts, but that's the normal stuff! The hardest part is what you would do to any car, keep it clean.

Right now it seems ultraquiet about the 2.0 L TDI! Right now is though $1000 goodwill program. I also understand that we will receive about $6000 penalties. Other than that nothing.

So what is it? It says 98% renewable, not Biodiesel? Sounds like double talk to me. Will it void our warranty? We have two locations in San Diego. I may have to ask my VW dealer about it.

This story actually hit the wires yesterday:

"A growing stack of recent government and private studies has made increasingly clear that Volkswagen was hardly the only company to flout pollution limits.

Environmental activists have complained for years that nitrogen oxide levels in major cities like Rome, Paris or Stuttgart were much higher than they should be because of diesel emissions, with grave effects on human health. Now the activists feel vindicated."

Oh the emissions control/temperature bogeyman again. As long as the firms can show that moisture is an issue in the system up to the temperatures being questioned, the greenie weenies don't have a case.

I wonder what those brave "activists" think about rare earths mining - oh, not in their backyard, they don't care.

Oh yeah? Well, as a big fat greenie, I'm going to hop on a 767 and come punch your lights out.

(I'll take a Prius cab from SeaTac to your place).

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,419
But if I am not in your backyard, as a greenie, why do you care about me? ;)

I think I only have one or two incandescent bulbs in operation - one in the range hood, one in an antique lamp. The fridge has one too, I guess. Don't wanna know what's in those, should move on to LED one of these days/

Precisely the argument I am having with Rocky on FB. He is completely uncaring about pollution when it comes to building Teslas. As long as it is kept out of Michigan. REE mining and processing is some of the dirtiest processes in the World.

I’d seen some photos before I left for Inner Mongolia, but nothing prepared me for the sight
