What Would It Take for YOU to buy a diesel car?

But truthfully & to wit, the environmentalist can’t handle the fact that their stated & executed policies enable more gasoline use and oil barrel demand, both domestically & aboard! Yet, approximately 60% diesel USA PVF will crush oil barrel demand 50% - 60%.
No, I don’t understand why it’s important for them to understand that? More gasoline & oil barrel demand are obviously good things?
2017 Ford F-150 posts (fuelly.com) between 16 mpg to 18 mpg. With Gagrice’s TDI compact truck posting 29 mpg, that up to 81% - 61% better.. its a great target! Anybody can do the math against 15,000 miles per year.
In passing I’ve read, in the WSJ it’s 40 M USED cars changing hands in a given year. Used car prices, this 2017/2018 MY year promises to be very strong. The deals look to be in the sedans and compacts. Not a word as to the more precise number of 2017 MY NEW cars.
I fear that VW might have been reading this diesel thread. The actions taken might have been a little skewed to both a brand & TDI buyer. They now think that CUV’s are the key to VW successes in the US (2.5% share) and around the world ! Whether VW will resume their progressive TDI stance in US markets remains to be seen.
Here's a Bluetec bus at the customer delivery center at the Sindelfingen factory:
There are many fleets of private buses in Europe, for holiday tours and some Greyhound-style travel. Taller buses are a big deal here. The one we rode in from the center to the factory was quite fancy.
Saw plenty of diesel VWs zooming down the autobahn at 100mph+ today
The side effect of no ABS is a minor detractor.
Yup!! TDI’s snoozing (2,300-2,500 rpm) down the autobahn/freeways @ 100 mph + all day/night ! Now that’s something I can get used to, along with keep right EXCEPT to pass lane discipline!
1. No more engine braking on the downhills
2. 40% increase in Adblue usage
3. lower Mileage with the fix.
and they think we will be happy with a $7300 check when the fix is done. Though so far it is NOT approved. No buybacks on the VW,Audi Porsche 3.0L TDI Gen 2.
I am so unhappy with VW, they will never see another dollar of mine.
The fact that the 2018 Cayenne (Touareg underneath) continues in the Porsche lineup, speaks volumes to the midsize CUV platforms’ 16+ years efficacy. So for one example, .94 g skid pad is hard to top, even by super cars!
Driving it 15,000 miles a year would be probably be nutty.
Does it have LED focus beam & steering guided headlamps, lane guidance, back up camera, preemptive accident braking, panoramic sunroof, GPS, station wagon option, Bluetooth, navi ?
Don't you just hate those ill-equipped models ?
I don't really care about the DEF usage. Given the rate at which mine uses it, I expect it won't really be any different (I'm already at appx 50% more than manufacturer estimates, and nobody knows why). One thing I really noticed in this car is that it doesn't have that "automatic float" as I call it; it operates much more like I expect out of a manual. So, I'll miss that engine braking - it also seems strange that they would have to eliminate that (or would even mention it in the changes, TBH). Lower mileage is better than it could be, so worth the $8,400 payday.
Ultimately, I don't care how the vehicle operates after the fix, as I won't own it for long after that. But, like you, I am quite miffed about the lack of an option for owners to choose buyback on these. It is really just wrong that the settlement would stiff 7% of TDI owners out of the choice of which way they want to go on this. It really just doesn't make sense.
I am pretty sure that EPA/CARB did approve the fix, though. It is a done deal.
I currently have mine scheduled for its operation in Anchorage on January 02.
The EPA and CARB have approved an Emissions Compliant Repair (ECR) for the vehicle that you registered in the Online Claims Portal for the VW/Audi/Porsche 3.0L Diesel Emissions Settlements. For more information on the Emissions Compliant Repair, including information on what the modification involves, the impact (if any) that the modification will have on the vehicle and the terms of the extended emissions warranty, please view the information available here. With the approval of the ECR, Repair Participation Payments will no longer be issued for current owners and lessees of affected vehicles. Eligible Owners that have already received a Participation Payment will receive the remainder of their Repair Payment after the completion of an ECR on their vehicle, and full Repair Payments will be issued to Eligible Owners who have not received Participation Payments after they have filed a complete and valid claim and completed the ECR on their vehicle.
What do I need to do now?
If you have not yet submitted supporting information and documentation for your claim to participate in the Settlement Program, you may submit a claim through the Online Claims Portal or the Paper Claims Form. Instructions on how to complete your claim and accept the ECR can be found here. As mentioned, with approval of the ECR, Repair Participation Payments will no longer be extended. After filing a claim, Current Owners and Lessees that wish to participate in the Settlement should schedule an appointment with their preferred dealership for completion of the repair.
If you already submitted a claim and selected an Emissions Compliant Repair as your remedy, we will continue to process your claim in the normal claims review process.
If you have already received and accepted an offer letter for an Emissions Compliant Repair and your signed offer letter has been accepted by Volkswagen, you may now schedule your appointment for an ECR directly with your preferred dealership. If you have an upcoming Repair Participation Payment appointment scheduled, you will be notified of its cancelation and instructed to schedule an appointment for an ECR directly with your preferred dealership. Dealerships will be equipped with the necessary materials to complete the Emissions Compliant Repair after November 6, 2017. Appointment availability will vary by dealership.
If you do not wish to participate in the Settlement Program but want to get an Emissions Compliant Repair on your vehicle, you may schedule an appointment directly with your preferred dealer after November 6, 2017.
Upon completion of the Emissions Compliant Repair, eligible consumers participating in the Settlement Program will receive payment of an amount to which they are entitled.
If you file a claim and have the Emissions Compliant Repair completed, you have the option to receive payment via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) or paper check. If you select paper check a check will be mailed to the mailing address on your claim. If you select EFT, click here to see information on how to accept the Electronic Funds Transfer.
more ethanol in gasoline lowers mpg, this is not debatable. E15 would thus provide lower mpg than E10 in most conditions. The goal of ethanol in gas is not for mpg, it's for winterizing, octane, and to reduce pollution from grossly-polluting vehicles. There is less energy content in ethanol per unit volume than gas. mother nature cannot be fooled.
a family member drives hazmat/fuel-tanker and tells me that businesses which bet on this E15 and produce/retail it very much regret doing so. they should have called me first, or made a query here on the argue-about-fuel-types-thread.
nh to manhattan "commute" this week in chevy-cruze-diesel-stick-with-heated-steering-wheel... the mpg was between 52 and 62 mpg, probably about 55 - including the NYC/manhattan traffic which was minimal. Also those mpg numbers do not include subtracting about 2 mpg to account for the DEF consumption. Not sure if it has done a DPF-regen yet.
I’ve gotten zero input to 42 gal barrel of oil yielding 19 gal of gasoline & 13 gals of diesel.
The whole reason for diesel & it’s lesser oil barrel demand is ALSO either grossly denied and/or overlooked in the efforts ‘to kill the beast”. Diesel fuel is defined as an alternative pvf fuel. In 2009, the IRS gave tax credits to buy 2009 VW Jetta TDI, as a clean diesel fuel. The original % goal of diesel, as an alternative fuel was 10% (of the PVF). 10% diesel fuel goal & its use is a minority understanding/demonstration of decreased oil barrel demand. It is currently estimated at approximately 3% to 5% of the PVF.
So called winterized ethanol fuel in the western states is hardly used as a a substitute for “gross polluting “ winter vehicles. It is an octane booster. It’s original goal was 10% alternative fuel. @ 15% ethanol, it would be 15%.
To state the obvious, zero ethanol demand & use of gas/diesel can greatly diminish oil barrel demand. The problem with 10/15% ethanol is it mandated the creation whole new products & industries that may or may not have been/be necessary. So for example, one might want to ask the question: why is ethanol transported by diesel trucks instead of ethanol trucks?
There are too many inconvenient truths of 10/15% ethanol to go over in a diesel forum. I can think of about 10, off the top of my head. One was/is/remains EPA had to give ethanol an exemption because ethanol grossly pollutes. Second, to maintain the appearance of the lie as truth, EPA mandated zero ethanol emissions mitigation measures. Third, there is zero discussion about the deaths, etc. due to unmitigated/mitigated ethanol consumption. Ethanol production has a glaring unspoken production of CO2, a known “global warming felony “ gas.
It’s heartening to read about your mpg real world experiences & silent and probably seamless regens.
I’m not sure how much of the 406 #ft of torque might be lost in the translation; or even how it will run, or the new MPG. But I’m sure before too long, the aftermarket will have answers for it/some to all stated issues & changes.
2013 LX 570 2016 LS 460
My quoted piece may not have given justice to the warranty realities. If memory serves me correctly, the new car warranty’s for the 2012, 2013, et al., etc. VW Touareg TDI’s were 4 years/50,000 miles. These warranties cost VW or the OEM “something.” Add to that the extra 10 years/120,000 miles, =‘s 14 years/170,000 miles in warranties. VW towing adds another 3 years/36,000 miles for 7 years/86,000 miles. The emissions fixes =N/C, but then again cost something. And don’t forget to add the $$’s in emissions penalties. I almost forgot about the goodwill of $1,000. Now I make absolutely no claim to knowing how much the totals are and/or real warranty/units (will) cost over their lifespan.
There’s interesting angles/side benefits of VW having a USA less than 2.5% pvf market share in the new EV race. VW can easily beat USA market EV #’s & %’s. I would dare say they have the capacity and capability of beating out Tesla.
European pvf diesels will remain 50%+ diesels for at least the next 24 MY’s years. Why? Dah... (42 gal barrel of oil=‘s 19 gal gasoline/13 gal diesel, per diamond.gov) if they slant the pvf percentage like America to 95 to 97% gasoline, they will use far more barrels of oil !!! If they go to EV, they will massively increase coal use. Those alternatives are absolute stupidity on any number of levels. Euro/VW heavy duty truck diesels in the European & US markets are already seen as better alternatives.
The long story short, VW can easily take (2016) & hold the # 1 world auto OEM position (#2 Toyota, #3 GM ) in the world. At some point, VW needs to work very diligently & seriously on increasing profits & more importantly, profit %’s.
In some ways, the VW ( hey,we’ll #1) feat is all the more amazing, when one stops to think that VW is still winning the race with the various boat anchors dragging in the water. The USA system punched VW with a $20 B body blow. But, VW set up a series of Floyd Mayweather boxing moves in motion. GM flounders to even sell its best brand in the European auto markets (#3 biggest market).
For example, GM had to declare bankruptcy. In addition, the United States without saying so, had made GM an auto OEM too big to fail & propped it up. Even the unions, which are now part of GM management, & huge % ownership, likes exporting union American jobs. I think also we are just lucky that China (#1 biggest market) likes US (named) auto products (#2 biggest)
TMI It’s even better if one is subject to IRS Section179.org rules. http://www.section179.org/section_179_vehicle_deductions.html
Yes, the significantly less downward TDI engine compression braking operation was designed that way. It’s made possible with the drive by wire (& computer) technologies. Its not new. It falls under the TMI category. To me (decending from 7,300 ft altitude) the zero fuel draw combined with the 8 speed Toyota transmission makes precision & seamless operation very smooth. This is not to mentioned the significant mpg advantage. On the ocassions I do misjudge, braking is literally monster. Yet again, another smooth as silk component operation.
Your VW (Touareg TDI et al., mid sized SUV/CUV) REMAINS one of the best in the SUV/CUV midsize segment, even after a very long in the tooth (since 2002, 16 year) platform run ! The TDI version offers a series of balances making it even harder to beat.
By way of TMI, after the sterling warranty/s, I’d have no issues running up to 30,000 miles OCI’s on TDI’s. Almost every recommended/specified oil (VW 501.00, Castrol, M1, Total, Motul. etc. ) is VERY robust ! Realistically, (on four diesels 195,000,120,000, 63,000,55,000) I’ve been doing this for 433,000 miles.
I’m utterly shocked the hypocrite environmentalists have bought into the new design, model, platform in 5 years or less concept for most models.
Yearly miles can range from 120,000 to 260,000.
Took the car in for its error message repair that popped up a few hours before I left - dealer had it fixed in an hour, good service. I was a little concerned the car might be unhappy starting after being idle for ~3 weeks, but the car doesn't seem to care.
And a random pic from the trip - C-class cabrio, diesel. Diesel convertible seems alien here:
The MB convertibles are beautiful. But I wish, if I were a buyer, that convertibles were more “ hermetically sealed”
I’m glad you had a good trip.
On the diesel side, they are posting 50/36 mpg (2003 Jetta TDI, 190,00/2014 MB GLK 250 BT, 55,000). It’s been very consistent over 245,000 miles.
I can count on one hand the number of Teslas I saw on the road in Germany. Here, I can count the same in an hour or less. Electricity prices are a funny animal, prices vs costs are a key. I won't say I believe higher prices have impacted the quality of life there (which in many areas is easily higher than many areas here) though.
I actually bought the 2012 VW Touareg TDI with the goals of keeping it for approximately 300,000 miles/15,000 miles per year and/or @ least 20 years. TL C experiences indicate 30 years is a no brainer. The decision to participate in the buybacks was predicated on the VW A decision to not pursue the 2012 (first gen) emissions approval, when the very next years, 2013 on up were approved. So it remains to be seen if the 2012 emission fixes will still be approved. The fact it was not a bad deal didn't hurt.
In most respects, however, I’m almost ecstatic about the VW brand/participation! On the other hand, MB performance has been absolutely solid. I am (merely) really very happy with the MB GLK 250BT.
You make a good point about Germany talking a good game about going away from oil barrel based fuels. The information between the parentheses are a tell. (42 gal oil barrel yields 19 gal gasoline/13 gal diesel, amongst other products) Germany and other countries get it. The USA shrills don’t. If we get it, we are just lying about it.
Germany is already committed to its nuclear & coal power plants decommissioning. What will they really replace them with? Really, natural gas? Those have been questions that Germany hasn't answered in at least 78 years. If Germany/Japan can be used as examples, the process of going away from barrel oil fuel, should take a total of @ least 75 years, more. The process should not be unlike the Chicago Cubs winning another World Series. “There is always next year”. So I think they will keep talking.
Japan’s pvf is app 3.9 M!? That’s a very interesting statistic/reality given just Toyota is one of the biggest world auto OEM’s (#2) . What does one think would happen to Japan (Germany also) if it didn’t have oil barrel based automobile income?
So another interesting example, how long do people think Puerto Rico will taken to change over to a state-of-the-art solar/wind electrical power grid and 100% electrical cars ? Aint it grand for the obstructionist environmentalists? They can start the grand experiment in utopia from scratch? (sans Goldman Sachs backing it’s no yield debt?)
Puerto Rico is not a state of the United States. While is in fact it’s own country, it’s people lay claim to US citizenship. In plain sight, this latest hurricane disaster has led to the MASSIVE & continuing refugee exodus/diaspora. Fl seems to be a major destination. I’m not sure if this diaspora is considered immigration or emigration. As of 2015, PR population was 3.47 M +. How many are going to the mainland, et al., USA is anybody’s guess.
In the not too distant past, Texas among others took the EMigration of half the population of NO, LA. Texas since actually leads the states in solar and wind generation & % of electricity for its grid. Houston, Texas just had its major disaster.
It’s taken about 38 years since Nixon/Kissinger opened up among many others economic relations with China for the economic miracle that is China to be where it’s at now in 2017. The contrasts are indeed stark. US monies have helped to create more than 300 M middle class, among others on the coal & oil barrel energies foundations.
So far wind/solar has created zero nations/states. It’s lucky to be tiny %’s in a states electrical consumption & grid production. It might beg the question, why are the obstructionist environmentalists not stepping up to the (energy) plate? Another question, why they are letting this opportunity pass them by?
May 2018/2019 MY’s bring a host of more diesel choices & joy.

Best sunsets and Sunrises anyplace I have been. This mornings treat.
My daughter was just recently out in the Las Vegas, NV desert functioning some “pieces” & enjoying her, “all of youz’s” USA’s # 2 amendment right. Then comes the dirty side ! ...CLEANING!
AntiFA can exercise first amendment rights out there. But unless there’s a CNN camera crew documenting, whose going to know, let alone care.
