Yep, dealer would probably put it up at $18,999 asking, even with those relatively low miles. High mile ones can be had for $15K retail.

Expensive automobiles are going to cost you more in depreciation when you buy new. Not necessarily percentage wise, but in dollars down the drain, oh, yeah!

When I was driving Cadillacs, I always bought used. People who pay that much for a new car (Cadillac, Infiniti, Mercedes) tend to take better care of it than the average new car buyer. You can usually find one that has been dealer serviced, and kept in a garage. They even have a term for it over on the Cadillac forums, “Garage Queen”.

Your Q40, for example, would probably make an excellent buy for someone else. Or that S450 that @abacomike is driving right now, when he turns it in at the end of the 3 year lease.

hey Q, since you have been looking, what's the S60 CPO market looking like? Found 2 that I liked.

one is a 2016 S60, red over beige, FWD. 29K miles, nicely equipped with power seats, parking sensors and BLIS.

the other is a 2018 Inscription, white over Beige. 18K miles. pretty loaded, BLIS, heated steering wheel, parking sensors.

and for the heck of it, a very nice 1 owner CPO 2016 TLX. 4 cyl, tech. Gray over gray, 27,000 miles.

and just for the double heck, a 2019 CPO TLX tech, white, 5 miles.

after having (between me and the wife) a few medical things (not serious, but back/foot/leg type stuff) I also realize it does not make sense to postpone doing stuff like travelling until you have time/money to do it. If the first is a base trim, $17.5k would be the moon. About $25k on the 18 inscription.

$22.5k-$23k on the 16 tlx. ...how is a 19 with 5 miles CPO? Not much data to go on. I've got on with 74 miles at $27,750. So maybe $31k-$31.5k? What do they cost new?

    the 2016 S60 was a premier. FWIW. I think they want 19,900 for it. The 2018 S60 is $26,500 I think.

Are the prices you listed dealer retail?

the 2016 TLX is asking 22K, so that seems good. The 2019 has 5,000 miles on it. asking $29,500 (new MSRP is about $37,500 I think. )

Ah, well 5k miles is probably more like $25.5k auction value and $29k tops retail cpo.

$19.5k would be OK on a 2016 premier.

The numbers I stated are retail. I added $3k-$3500 to each auction number for CPO.

We hate to part with her, but if I could get some realistic trade-in info on our 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT crew cab, 4x4, short box, 5.9L Cummins with the following:

    191,000 miles
    Leer topper - color match
Full 5" exhaust & performance cat
    Minor lift/leveling kit 1.5"?
    Tires - 35" ATs on 17" custom wheels - 50% life
    Chipped with Smarty Tuner
Grey exterior with a few door dings and some scratches
Grey cloth interior - needs detailed
Kenwood 5" screen stereo/CD/DVD player with updated speakers, JBL sub under rear seat, 2 amps
    Line-X bed liner
Tow package - trailer brake aftermarket
Wenatchee, WA but willing to drive...

We're downsizing looking at leasing a 2019 Chevy Colorado 4x4 baby D-max Z71 crew cab, long box with MSRP of 42,175.

    Thanks in advance!

If we're talking about that 2007 Dodge diesel, a dealer might give more than you think. Not as much as a private party, but still more than you would think if you don't pay any attention to diesel trucks.

We'd love to sell it private party as similar vintage 2500s (and the less-cool 6.7L Cummins on 2007.5 versions) are going between 17-19k. I think we're most concerned about someone getting financing on an 11-year old vehicle with "high" miles. We all know the 5.9L is sought after - inline 6, no EGR crap, runs forever - but banks may fail to agree. :)
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I'll let Q jump in, but my two cents is that this is one vehicle I wouldn't try to trade-in. Have you tried to sell it? At what price did you advertise?

  • RideondirtRideondirt Member Posts: 6
We haven’t tried to list it yet. We need to get it detailed and de-dogged first. Sounds like the consensus is to give the private party sell a go. I’d love to get that extra cash out of it for sure. Scheduling a detail for next week!

Oh I know they can be worth a good amount of money but I'm focusing on the truck as she described it, presented to the dealer as is.

But hey, it doesn't cost anything to take it to a dealer and see what they say.

Her retail estimate is a bit high I think because I see them really, really clean in the high teens. I think she'd have to take a hit of at least around $4K--$5K on a trade-in, compared to a private party sale.

So I'll take a guess here of $10K trade-in and $14K retail, with the truck detailed nicely. Asking price could be higher, of course.

    Q might think otherwise.

I think nicely cleaned up with the modifications, listing it on a Cummins diesel enthusiast forum will probably yield a handsome premium over the ordinary CL retail route.

It very well could. As Ms. Rideondirt points out, though, there's a certain price point on used cars, along with an age-point, where the number of buyers who can just write a check for the amount, gets very limited. Not many financial institutions are going to loan on that truck, or if they do, it would be at an exorbitant rate no doubt.

It's been my experience that such enthusiasts usually have to sell what they own first, to buy the new toy.

Private sale would be much better, but it's going to take some time. So then the question becomes one of time vs. money.

  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,330
my experience with selling cars off CL is, once you crack $10K, it gets much harder. Below $5k, now you are talking!

  • henrynhenryn Member Posts: 4,289
It's going to take the right buyer for your Mini, that's for sure. Most people with only $3,900 to spend are looking for solid reliable transportation, and what you're selling is more on the fun side of the equation, the opposite of "solid reliable transportation".

Still, a lot of young people will buy "fun" and then live to regret it. I know I did, several times.

Now, now....the Mini has always been reliable. It's never stranded me, not once. BUT....of course I took care of things pro-actively. The main problem is that it is an extremely expensive car to repair, and I've used up about 3 bottles of Gorilla glue thanks to the build quality equal to an Italian TV dinner tray.

Can I get an idea of a fair trade in value for a 2008 Toyota Sienna LE with 137k miles. Condition is on the very good side of the scale compared to the average 10 year old car. No mechanical deficiencies and minor bumper scratches and dings. No rust or major dents or damage

Was the damage repaired? If so, was it repaired by a 4-yr-old? Just wondering because $2k is REALLY LOW. $5k-$5500 would be more accurate if not for the dirty carfax. Should still fetch $4k, though, unless, again, if the damage is still there or repaired very poorly.
