Besides oil changes and rotations, not sure the wife has done more than that on her 2015 A3. She did prepay for the first four services and is at 43K right now. I had the first, second and third prepaid at the VW dealer and know they replaced the brake fluid and the water pump and thermostat under warranty. At about 50,500 now. Also replaced the air filter recently and was told I need new wiper blades.
We both want to keep these vehicles till at least 80K or so, so asking the experts what services should we have done going forward?

Just took out a lease on a 330i and was thinking if I should sell my GTI?  Appreciate any numbers on it. Lease is for 24mo./15k so trying to figure out if it makes sense to sell it now since the new mk8 is not out yet or let wife drive it in the meantime. Thanks in advance.

Auction value is $14k. So figure you could advertise it for $16995 and sell for $16k. Or maybe carvana/vroom will offer $14.5k-$15k?

If the goal is to get to 80k, I'm going to say do nothing beyond the minimum factory maintenance schedule, and replacing things that have worn out (like tires, brakes, wiper blades).

other than the brake fluid, not really much else. You would have gotten (I assume) new coolant with the water pump change. Could do that on the Audi. Trans fluid change (the A3 is a FWD, so no DSG to worry about, right?)

on my Hondas, in that timeframe, they got oil changes, a brake fluid change, and a trans fluid change, plus air and cabin filters.

Just had the daughters MINI in for service, today.

Oil and filter, plus a brake fluid service. All prepaid, so nothing out of pocket.

Got word that it could use a new battery. Rated at 720 CCA, but now showing 223.

Anyone care to guess how much I was quoted for a new battery?

I just paid $234 including tax for a 750 CCA battery from Advanced Auto Parts for the Saab. I’ll guess somewhere in that ballpark.

Even the Acura dealer was not that bad when I needed one. Went to Batteries+. Some big honking unit (many CCA), I think it was a Panasonic? For something like $135 installed in the RDX.

Batteries are a little more expensive these days, running around $150 on average (from what I have seen and read). And more new cars are being equipped with start-stop technology, and most of those are going to have AGM batteries. My new F150 pickup is an example of that. And AGM batteries do cost a little more. A quick search for an AGM replacement battery for my truck shows prices averaging around $180 or $190.

Mini = BMW = expensive parts. Go price a catalytic for that car someday---better yet, don't.

our RDX (and I think the Odyssey before that) always seemed to ask for an oil change at about 7,500 miles. This is the first time in at least 3 years the minder will come on before I hit the 12 month mark. For some reason, it only monitors life, not time, even though it is in the manual I think to not go more than 12 months.

My RDX hit 40% after a bit more than 6000 miles. So I'm guessing it's going to initially trip (15%) at about 8500. Pretty sure I'll only end up using 2 of my free dealer services (max 4 in 2 years).

Carfax shows no maintenance, which I don't feel good about.

looks nice. I saw one like that today in a dark maroon that looked sharp. I walk the dog through a retirement community (small single family houses with garages) and it was parked in there with the door up, so I just saw the butt.

for that money, I would probably get the 2018 Avalon with 10K miles I found by me.

Maintenance not showing could be a couple things: 1., The servicing shop does not report on Carfax, or 2., DIY. Of course, at that mileage, it is possible (however unlikely) that the car has simply had no maintenance, but even then that would not likely cause any long-term issues.

Not sure what engine you have in the Fusion, but it seems like this is basically the same car with a different nameplate. What's the difference?

Me... I think I would go for a Continental! :D

Ex, a beautiful vehicle for sure but isn't almost the same as your Fusion? I like your wife's Lincoln better but that's just me, I like a 5 door vehicle for the versatility. Not a Ford guy unfortunately. Want to like the new EcoSport but it's so underpowered from what I've read and the mpg's are just awful for that size vehicle. I'd expect closer to 40 on the highway to be honest and low 30's in the city. It's a good looking vehicle though and bet it can scoot real good also. But like I said, we're just not a Ford family. After last week, we became a part Chevy family due to my daughter's recent punch.

You likely won’t get them to see reason given the fact they have it marked $6k over auction value.

And you don’t need to. There is an absolute glut of these out there.

Q--I'm going to help a friend unload his 2003 Porsche Boxster, clean, 125K miles, tiptronic, silver color. I was thinking of asking $7500 and working from there. What do you think? There are a gazillion of these out there I've noticed, so it's not an easy sell.

$7k-$7500 is about what I'd expect to see a dealer asking. I'd advise a shopper paying no more than $6k private party. So you aren't off out of the ballpark.

Yes, the IMS issue always hangs overhead, although the threat diminishes significantly with a high mileage car. People have to remember the Golden Rule with these cars, and 996 Porsches--change the oil ridiculously often, and rev that engine.

I kinda doubt that even BAT would help him prosper. There are just too many Boxsters for sale. They really are "a dime a dozen". They made a boatload of these cars. However, I will suggest it to him---what's the harm. He hasn't had any luck by himself, aside from cryptic messages from people "in the military at a secret base" or "overseas and wanting to buy the car for my father as a surprise" or "I am much willing to be paying the full sum for your Porch. Please to send my instruction on where to send money. I will be arranging to pick car up and send truck. Send me your address and bank account information."

I never bought one because they are too tight for me in the cockpit. I can manage with a Tip but I don't want a Tip. But with a clutch, my thigh jams right into the steering wheel. One would have to modify the rear bulkhead to get any more seat room.

Back in the early 2000s, there were a bunch of Boxsters available on Swapalease for $250 a month or so. It was very tempting, but I didn’t want to have a two seater as my only transportation.

    Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
The Boxsters are great driving cars, but very cramped inside--at least the older ones. I don't know if the new models have improved the cockpit storage and stowage problem, or the seat comfort. You gotta remember that the early cars were built to a price, and it shows all over.
