Q, Thanks for the info regarding the Fusion. BTW, it was left front fender, not a rear quarter, so unbolt and replace.

Yeah, V6. I really like the look. It's my wife Jeep but I got a new Wrangler earlier this year and she's decided she wants it instead. Not sure if I'm doing it right.. or doing it wrong. lol

Nice save, Michaell... In my head, I heard Terry of Blessed Memory grouse "Do I look like the post office?"

And I agree, def. CCBA material. Good grief, 9k miles?
Sounds like a wife swap is in order.

It is a replaced body panel with non-factory paint. It is a big hit in my book, regardless. I've heard reports of some appraisers who feel different. I've never personally met one, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

well, i had to figure it out for myself, but it looks like the Altitude is V6 only. About $30-$31k.

I'd probably calculate a 10-15% diminishment of value on the Fusion if I were appraising it for a client.

    Hi.

What would be a fair trade in for this car in New Jersey? Or is it that much better to sell private.

    Gray 2011 Volkswagen GTI 2dr 6-spd w/Sunroof (PZEV)
    No Navigation
    48,750k miles

Exterior condition - some wheels have curb rash and small dings or fine scratches but nothing major.
Interior condition - coffee was spilled so stain on the cloth seat but I'm sure could be cleaned. Nothing ripped or any burned holes because car was never smoked in :)

No accidents but the windshield was recently replaced due to a rock hitting it.

Tires are fairly new (8K miles on them)

No check engine or any warning lights on.

    One owner.

    Thanks.

    I'll say $7k.
Tough to pin down VWs right now, as you may know.
I see one in NY with 43k that hit $8100, yet one in Baltimore 1 week earlier for $11k. Oh, and there was one in NJ yesterday for $12k with 76k miles! That's definitely an exception. I wouldn't be surprised at the $7k number, nor would I be shocked if someone offered you $10k.
I'd say find out what they are willing to offer on trade. If it really is near my low number, I'd suggest selling it yourself. It would probably go quick at $10k.

wow... so far I had a few dealers offer $11k and one offered 11.5 (it was a VW dealer) so I'm guessing that's not bad. I was hoping to at least get $12k for it...

    were they both VW dealers?
Either way, I'd grab that offer!! As long as getting a good deal on the car you are buying. Hopefully they have not come to their senses yet. I have a feeling not everyone has caught onto the fact that VWs are going to be tougher to sell.

they weren't VW dealers but did mention how it's starting to get tougher to sell them as too many are flooding the market.
I'm guessing even though this model is not part of the whole diesel issue, the Volkswagen brand as a whole is just dragging the prices down and consumer will ultimately pay for VW wrongdoings

I gotta think that is a tough thing to private sale. especially if you have a note to pay off. and even if not, you don't want to finance it!

Good heavens, I'd get weak knees trying to sell a $10k+ car... did it once and spent 10 minutes counting and checking $20 bills on my back stoop. $12,500 worth.

This sounds like a dealer item, unless you want to take a good long time to do it and be very careful. Definitely pay it off first, though, and get paid at a bank, by the bank.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,336
speaking of diminished value, I saw my BIL last week. Was surprised to see him driving an X3, thinking he traded in his BMW 550 on it (would not be surprised about the trade in, just that he got an X3!).

Turns out he had been hit last month. Some 18 YO in an old Mustang pulled out of a lot onto the main road, didn't look, and nailed him in the passenger side. Not going too fast, and thankfully no one hurt.

anyway, even after 10K in repairs, still having problems. Body was fixed fine, but it hit the RF wheel. That got replaced, but now car has vibrations, etc. it did not have before. back at shop (BMW dealer did the collision work) to sort out. May be transaxle, drive axle, who knows what got broken or bent.

even if they sort it, I think he wanted to get rid of it fairly soon. may be stuck, if not screwed, now.

saddest part is, he is totally OCD about his cars, and it was clean as a whistle. plus never saw the road in winter if there was any salt around. I think it is a 2012 maybe, with ~50k on it (long highway commute)

I've sold several cars that have decent value (more than a typical person would pay "out of pocket"), and all have gone smooth as can be. The buyer just needs to get their financing in place, I provide a bank-provided payoff quote, and we do the deed at their financing institution. Done.

I have sold a few in the low teens, and took a bank check from a local person. But I had the title in hand in both cases, so was simple on my end.

most I ever got in cash I think was about 6K. Makes a nice wad of cash!

Last year, I sold a used car for $8,000. The man showed up with 80 $100 bills. The bad part was, when I deposited the money at the credit union. I had to sign some disclosure form, and they had to take my picture to keep on file with the form.

I should have just buried it in the back yard in a Folger's coffee can. If it was good enough for my grandmother ...

The problem becomes, most people who are going to finance have a trade in. Which means they need to sell their trade in, in order to have the down payment, and this requires time / patience, which are in short supply these days.

At least here in NJ, trading a $30k vehicle gets me $2100 in a tax break on the vehicle I'm trading on. The odds of me selling it for $2k over trade-in value aren't very good, not to mention all the time and punishment of selling myself. Not worth it.

This is for a friend, who is quite fond of Buicks (don’t ask).

    2010 Buick Lucerne CXL
    64k miles
    Houston, TX

    Int: Cocoa/Cashmere

The Carfax report shows that it was sold at auction back on 8/24/2015. How much do you think the dealer has tied up in this, and what would be a reasonable amount to offer? (Cash, no trade, no financing).

    Thanks in advance.

found it! VIN came up as a Premium. Auction was actually 8/27 per Manheim. They paid $10,700, which is a bit above other similar ones, which are in the high 9s. I gotta think it probably owes them $11.5k or so. Seems like an aggressive asking price, so they maybe realized they overpaid a bit. So if he can get any money off, good for him, but paying the asking price would still be a good deal.

Yeah, I know. I found a 2013 Impala LTZ at Hertz, 54k miles, for $10,998. Seemed like a much better deal to me. 2 years old instead of 5 years old, 54k miles instead of 64k miles, 300 horsepower versus 219. But she LIKES Buicks, what can I say. We're driving over to look at it tomorrow.

And Impala LTZ's are really super nice vehicles, heck, any LTZ model is very loaded up with all the goodies and one gets big bang for their buck!
Have never sold privately though owning many Toyota's and other mid class imports, probably could've made out a bit better price wise but just didn't want the hassle I thought there would be. We also get the sales tax benefit here in Florida which is good incentive. The thought of having any Tom, Dick and Harry driving my vehicle leaves my mind going over terrible scenarios so just always decide to trade-in. Since we usually do not buy that often, this last time for me was a fluke, trading to the dealer is just what we do. I always say, well..."maybe next time", but then history repeats itself. Just really need the confidence and have a great vehicle to sell.

Passat - since you didn't specify, I'm assuming it is the base 2.5 engine. I'll take a stab at $12k-12.5k. They have fallen $1k last week alone, so you might want to move fast.

The local VW dealer has a brand new 2015 Passat Limited for $20,700. With owner loyalty, that becomes $18,700. That is really going to drive down the price on a used one.

I'm willing to consider those other colors but the car better be something special. For instance I test drove a 2013 Accord Sport in a green color. The "below market value" asking price was about $1K less than a new one but it had curb rash on all the rims and big scratch on the driver door. The salesperson went on about how buying a used one is so much better due to the CPO warranty. I gave her the stink eye and said that I better not need an extended power train warranty on an Accord. Besides, I want to be the one to rash up the rims and ding up the doors.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,336
that is a nice looking mazda. that color was one of the 2 (along with the dark blue) if I got one.

also rare, at least down here, to see the light color interior. A lot of the dealers (including the one with the killer price!) only stock black insides.

Speaking of used cars in nice pretty colors, the Infiniti dealer in Greenwich has this ruby red 2014 Q50: http://www.greenwichinfiniti.com/used-Greenwich-2014-Infiniti-Q50-NAVIGATION-JN1BV7AR3EM694203

7500 Miles, Sunroof & Navigation Packages, CPO. Asking $32,795. What are those going for at the auction? $26,500 - $27K?
