do you know if Toyota will have a higher cash back to buyers for the Sienna after the new year?
  • vinijinvinijin Member Posts: 28
I will never spend $36,000+ on one of the most boring vehicle - a minivan. If I have to spend this amount, I have other options to choose from.
  • bowang88bowang88 Member Posts: 11
Minivan might be 'boring' to an active person... but a convenient for others. In my case, I need it to carry my mother's power chair and make it easy to get on/off for her, which is not easy with our Acura MDX. There are lots pof reasons people embrace minivan. We have to balance the needs and wants while add the options. -Michelle

Isn't it wonderful for you that you have more options than "one of the most boring vehicles"..... be very thankful for that. You certainly don't have to spend $36,000+ for one. I certainly didn't. That's if you can afford and want all of the options that Toyota gives. And, don't ever say "never" because you do not ever know what position you will find yourself in.

    Hello all,
Can I buy extended warranty from a different dealer than the one I bought car from?
    thanks,
    Cheng
  • chubby6chubby6 Member Posts: 5
I just closed a deal on the same package with OTD $25.6 even. I made a detail review on their calculations and their sales tax rate and DMV license fees are wrong.....:) Boy are they surprised when I point that out! I realized you cannot overlook even the unnoticed area.

I had the same questions about extended warranty like Cheng. Does anyone had any idea? What is the average $ people are paying. The dealer show me what other people are paying. They range from $1,200 - $1,600. They keep telling me their offering rate ($1,100) is wage below other customers, etc.
  • chubby6chubby6 Member Posts: 5
I hope this is helpful but the dealership can still rip you off on sales tax and lic fees. You can cross check their numbers by doing a 1 minute research.

Sales Tax - go to www.boe.ca.gov (Broad of Equalization website) and click on City & County Sales Tax Rates, and click on Tax Rates for Cities and Counties, effective 04/01/07. Then look up the city where you live (not where the dealership is) and you should be able to find the sales tax rate for your city.

DMV Lic Fees - go to www.dmv.ca.gov (CA DMV website) and click on Vehicle Registration tab and choose Fees. Then click on vehicle registration fee calculator, new vehicle, and enter all necessary information. The purchase price should be your agreed price before any rebate + the doc fees (around $55).

If your calculated sales tax and lic fees is too far off from the dealership, they already cheated you on that. The difference could be a few hundred dollars depending on the type of vehicle you bot. Since what they reported to the DMV is another paper work and not your contract, you know where the difference goes.

The new 3.5l goes a long way in making the drive less boring. It's quicker than a Highlander or any crossover, including the MDX.

It can't go around a corner as fast, but if it did you'd spill all the kids' juice boxes anyway. :D

I can seat 8 adults comfortably, outrun an MDX in a straight line, and paid $25k for more space behind my 2nd row than most crossovers have behind their first row.

Perhaps you're just expecting way too much from a van.

PS $33k buys you a Limited with a DVD and GPS nowadays. $36k is even more loaded and/or AWD.

Finally bought it from Melody Toyota in San Bruno (SF Bay Area). Cash Price was 22988 + taxes/fees = 25.3K OTD.
Opted for 2.9% APR and 7 yr extended warranty etc. and that added another 3.5K to make it 28.8K OTD for me.

thanks to everyone in the forum, i got a lot of helpful info and tips here.

we finally bought the silver xle with evp1. went to Hayward Toyota first since they gave me an incredible internet quote (27116). when we got there -- bait and switch, the sales tried to sell us one with evp2. which is fine, but the interior is rather dirty with 30 miles on it, and it is missing the antenna. we got suspicious and went to the Dublin Toyota regardless how hard Hayward was trying to keep us in their showroom. Dublin offer 27666 but we told them that we could get as low as 27266 at another dealer and they are getting the car for us in a few days. At first they didn't blink until one hour later they offer 27466 and we took it.

the lesson we learn is that when you receive an incredible deal, it is mostly likely a bait to get you to their showroom. gather as much info as possible before you go.

we also bargain on the extended warranty. we were offered a 7yrs/100k mile extended warranty for 14xx, but on this forum i saw someone bought a 7yrs/75k for 1000 at Piercey, called Piercey and they are willing to do the same for us. We went back to Dublin and they said 7yrs/75k would cost 1095. and I told them that i can get it for 1000 at Piercey they immediatly matched it.

lesson learned: even the extended warranty is negotiable...

I learned so much at this forum so i just offer my experience to everyone here..

I was promised for a price of $200 over invoice (XLE limited) but found out that the dealer tried to charge me for an advertising fee of $685. Have any of you guys paid for it? I'm in the SF bay area. Thanks

When we bought our 07 XLE in July. I got a price over the internet at a local dealer that was over $1500 less than any competitor on a van that was to arrive that week. It came in on Friday, I did the deal on Saturday- no extra fees except for the standard doc fee (that everybody does around here) plus taxes and tags. This is in Mass BTW at Copeland Toyota.

No ad fee and they were not the largest dealer around- That's Boch in Norwood.

Every dealer is different. We went to the closest Toyota dealer to my house (less than 10 minutes away) and it was like dealing with the Keystone cops!

We ended up with an 07 XLE With package 4 (Pretty much loaded 2wd with leather and moonroof) for the price of a pkg 3. They were way into their holdback on us (to the tune of ~ a $200 total profit). It was end of MY- the van was produced 2 weeks prior to my purchase and on the lot for less than 24 hours when we did the deal. No fuss, no issues. Took the 4.9% for 48 on 10k and off we went. An amazingly positive buying experience. Maybe it's due to van sales being soft, but the van is awesome. Even the F&I girl looked twice at our deal because the price was so good. I'm no negotiator, I'm guessing that it was just one of those things- timing and the right vehicle.

I dunno anything about allocations. Maybe selling that XLE opened the door on other models (you take this Sienna XLE and we'll give you more high demand car X) and we happened to take it off their hands immediately.

So far, it has exceeded our expectations. I love the van. (I'm a 35 YO guy!) I'm not afraid of being seen in it- as I maintain that it is the Lexus of minivans almost literally It is a Lexus drivetrain :)

got a quote for my toyota sienna AWD 08 with option QF(#2), UL FE RM for 29810 out the door price. However, I have to get my own finance. Still thinking about it.

This is in MA btw. Anyone got a better deal?

Models with the JBL sound have an in-glass antennae.

I found this out when mine did NOT come with one, but since I do not have JBL sound mine really was missing.

They replaced it with no fuss, and I haven't had a problem since.

I'm looking for Sienna 2008 LE FWD 8 passengers in Southern California (8.25% tax rate) with the following option: Package #2, AL, FE, RL, and CF

What is the best OTD price for the above options?

If anyone knows any dealer in Southern California has a good deal, can you please let email me the dealer and the saleperson please. TIA
  • caravan2caravan2 Member Posts: 198
Just bought XLE EVP #2 for $27250 OTD, except sales tax that I'll pay to DMV directly in about 2 months as I got temporary plates for 60 days. Dealer gave me option to pay him to DMV directly. I chose to keep money for 60 days.

This include $1,000 rebate that Toyota is offering in our region.

The options are: QF (EVP#2), CF (Floor mats).

I turned the DRL by putting 5A fuse in the jumper. I think I'll get the jumper from the dealer that looks like fuse but is in white color.

when you buy a bottle of milk, the advertising fee should have been included already.
i would assume the same for cars. no additional advertising fee should be included. otherwise, they can charge you for the toilet paper in their dealership as well.

After the $1000 cash incentive, I was given the firm price of $38,100. I was shown the invoice which showed that $38,100 was invoice (base + destination + holdback + gas + TDA). The salesman says that the amount before cash incentive ($39,100) was invoice + a profit.

Edmunds' invoice shows $37,300. Does that include holdback for Toyotas? I don't want to pay holdback twice. The printout of the invoice looked like something that I could draft on my spreadsheet, so I am skeptical.

I wanted to pay $37,500 after cash incentive thinking that $37,300 was the invoice price.

Am I asking too much? Does $38100 look okay after factoring in the cash incentive?
  • caravan2caravan2 Member Posts: 198
I suspect edmunds.com does not include TDA. It does include holdback and wholesale finance.

Ask the salesman to print direct from Toyota dealer inventory report screen. You can walk with him to the manager's office to have him print in front of you.

Dealer invoice should match with edmunds.com-TDA listed on the dealer invoice.

It depends where you are.... invoice price-$1000 should be your target. Dealer is making at least hold back+whole sale financing at selling you at invoice price.
  • s4f4ms4f4m Member Posts: 19
    Caravan2,

    Thanks for the response/info.

I suspect that the 38100 is invoice, then, since ~37300 + TDA + Wholesale finance + gas + other little charges listed would/could easily get the price to 38100.

Would a target of invoice - $1000 be fair to the salesperson? I kind of doubt that they get commission on the holdback. I'd imagine profit over dealer invoice (which includes the holdback + etc charges) would be what the commission is based on. Also, does the $1000 incentive (from the manufacturer affect their commission?
  • s4f4ms4f4m Member Posts: 19
Fitzgerald of Gaithersburg's site lists the exact model (minus the color) I want for $36,600 (after $1000 incentive)! Tempted to take a road trip...if they can get my color. :)
  • caravan2caravan2 Member Posts: 198
I think invoice-$1000 is fair. Re: salesperson commission, it is hard to say what they're getting. I think at this level, they get flat commission... maybe some percentage of profits. I know for expensive vehicles like BMW, Lexus get higher commissions but then they sell less number of vehicles.
  • caravan2caravan2 Member Posts: 198
Get the price quote from Fitzgerald and see if they can match the price. Last month rebate in MD was $750. Has this gone up this year.

They might get color for you, just call them if you're willing to make road trip.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
We bought a Subaru from Fitz' other store, and I can vouch that they are a good dealership. No surprises. That's really the price you pay. They add only a $99 processing fee (lower than most) and tell you that up front.

    No TDA, no other fees.
  • s4f4ms4f4m Member Posts: 19
I just want to thank all posters on this forum (and Edmunds for hosting this area) for all the buying experience and suggestions. It has helped me a lot.

My final story. I did as one poster mentioned...e-mailed local dealerships for their "best quotes". All of the quotes I got were more than the initial quote I posted earlier of $38100 (after cash rebate, or 39100 before cash rebate). But one lone rebel offered a quote of 37600 (BEFORE ANY INCENTIVE). :surprise: Amazing; simply amazing! I could not believe it!!! I did not even haggle that price any lower as this guy was making me a really fair offer without any run around. I really felt he deserved my business for his frankness. It was already $1500 LESS than my inital quote. Plus, when I went to pick it up, I asked if he could throw in all-weather mats...no problem, he said. WHAT?!! :surprise: There really are great dealerships out there! My future business and that of my friends and colleagues will be to this dealer! :D

Anyways, wife and I have a new AWD XLE LTD Sienna @ 2.9% APR. She's happy. I'm happy. The kids are happy. My wallet is happy.

Only thing that I forgot to do...
I did NOT do my research on extended warranties as I was not going to buy one with my XLE LTD AWD Sienna (and because it is a Toyota for God's sake) and because I was thinking that the extended warranty was $3000. However, when given the pitch, I thought about the 4 fuel injectors on my Honda that needed replacement @ 80k miles for $700; I figured that I needed piece of mind and that I could break even (if I needed any repairs on all the electronics or AWD) based on the "low" quote (their rock bottom cost) that I got from the F&I gal at the dealership ($1000@7/75k or $1400@7/100k).

Low and behold...(cut and paste into the address line as the links sometimes do not work):
    http://www.toyotawarrantyinfo.com/vehicle.php

    $980 for the 7/100k
    $680 for the 7/75k

I will be contacting my F&I gal to see if she can make me a better offer. If not, I'll be calling the Bernardi dealer from the link above. I really want to give her and this dealer my business, but not at the expense of 50% more (for something that I may not need).

Oh yeah, I was smart (unknowingly) to pay for this outside of my financing agreement. Makes it easier to pull out or dispute with the credit card company.

Best of luck to all in search of a new Sienna. Just PM me your e-mail if you would like to know which dealer I used.

    *********************
Oh, BTW...this vehicle is the EXACT one where I got my initial quote of 38100 after cash back last week. It had a small smudge that I remember on the paint on the front passenger door still. My dealer traded for it; my salesman told me so and from where. I chuckled all the way home (and thanked God that He gave me the strength and wisdom in my head and gut to walk away last week). I experienced some self doubt that I left a really good deal on the table even reading some posts here re: the add-on fees (until I spent a few more hours reading these forum posts entirely).

***$500 BELOW dealer invoice* is possible BEFORE any incentive (cash or finance).***
*invoice here = vehicle cost + all dealer fees from Toyota (TDA, holdback, whls finance, gas, destination charge). My out the door (OTD) cost was quote + handling charge (which all dealers usually charge above negotiated price).

Emailing and to some extent phoneing are the only way to buy a car these days. To show up at the showroom and start haggling is sadistic IMO. You are on there turf that way.
I have bought a couple cars that way, my last Sienna lease for that matter. I think I really blew the salesmans mind when I asked him to fax me the contract first as well!!!
  • greytautumngreytautumn Member Posts: 38
I have to agree.Kick the tires, and negotiate over the internet. SOme dealrs don;t do pricing online. I don't deal with them.

I got my best price on my '07 over the internet, and even that was a killer deal (29.3k for an FWD XLE PKG #4) They were again, $1500 under the other quotes I had received. Add only the taxes, tags and $245 processing, and I was out the door. Seems that $245 is standard processing here(Boston suburbs- as I see by dealing with Bernardi. Bought my VW there 8 years ago!).
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Neat idea.

I merely asked for an out-the-door price, and came with a Cashier's Check for that exact amount.

Any games and the check would not cover the payment.
  • caravan2caravan2 Member Posts: 198
I ask the dealer to fax me two things once we agree on the price over the internet/phone.

    1) Dealer inventory report for the van they're quoting to make sure it exists and the correct options and color. They'll leave sometime invoices prices on it.

    2) Bill of sale. This would be exact amount, no ifs and buts :D And take the check in exact amount.

I was at the dealership yesterday (big mistake) had done lot's of research thanks to you guys! I started talking invoice price and they said their invoice was $30,231 after $1000 rebate. I made an offer that equalled $29,000 after killing me on a trade. According to Edmunds the invoice would be $28,518 after $1000 rebate. That is $1200 off from where they were. They let me walk after dealing with a sit down with the pit boss who tried to make me feel like an idiot. They were saying things such as "we would be losing money", and "do you wanna see the invoice?" What is a fair price for this vehicle? We are cash customers so the rebate applies though I feel like the rebate has been lost in the shuffle. We only have one dealership in town but another 4 within a 60 mile radius (Nashville, TN. area). Thanks for any tips!
  • ccc88ccc88 Member Posts: 39
Good to know that you got a great deal. BTW, are you able to get the dealer to give you a better deal on the extended warranty? I just bought the car and extended warranty a few days ago and I am going to do the same.
  • s4f4ms4f4m Member Posts: 19
I really wanted to give my dealer/finance gal the business and credit, but my dealer would not budge on the extended warranty, and I cannot justify spending 30% more on something that I may not need/use. I'm going with Bernardi (http://www.toyotawarrantyinfo.com/vehicle.php). I called the Bernardi, and the they told me that they're legit and there are no added fees. Just pay the quote for the platinum warranty, and you'll get your copy of the paperwork (from them) and Toyota Warranty cards (from Toyota) in a few weeks.

Best of luck! (My dealer understood my point and told me basically to jump on the better deal; they just could not go below their cost; strange how Bernardi can offer it so low...they must be getting something as a HUGE volume seller).
  • ccc88ccc88 Member Posts: 39
Thanks for the info. Did the dealer give you a refund with no hassle?

(My dealer understood my point and told me basically to jump on the better deal; they just could not go below their cost; strange how Bernardi can offer it so low...they must be getting something as a HUGE volume seller)[/quote]

The dealer in my town said the same thing when I purchased my Sienna about 5 months ago, i.e. they could not loose money and jump on the better deal. This was for Sienna not warranty.

For next purchase, couple of weeks ago, I was looking for another Sienna again. The manager told me the same thing again. I said ok. And then I saw owner in his office. I went to him and told him that I bought a Sienna 5 months ago when they could not match the price. And his manager is doing the same again. He asked for my cel number and I left. About 10 minutes later, sales manager called me and said he's giving my price. He was a little upset that I went to the owner, he did not say, but I could sense.

So, moral of the story is, he did not loose any money, just made less of profit and so is Bernardi.

I am desparate for some help in my van search. I am looking at an LE FWD with package 2 and the Upgrade Package. I have a price of 26,000 before tax, title, registration and document fees. With taxes and fees my calculation is that I will have an OTD price before trade of roughly 28,000. Does this sound reasonable for Package 2 and the Upgrade Package?

Any quick responses would be helpful. I might buy today.
  • bboy2bboy2 Member Posts: 9
I'm shopping for similar vehicle. I'm not sure what "upgrade package" includes but with #2 the invoice is 24,345. If you are planning to do your own financing then you can get the $1,000 rebate. I have gotten internet quotes = to Edmunds "invoice" price. I would shoot for Edmunds invoice before TTL and don't give more than $200 Doc fee. Hope this helps!
  • allyssaallyssa Member Posts: 4
So......I should offer...Invoice minus any factory incentives ( $1000 cash or low rate financing)? The internet salespeople i spoke to said if they give me invoice price it already includes the $1000 rebate and i will not be allowed to get the 2.9% financing. Is this correct?
  • maguymaguy Member Posts: 13
The Upgrade package is the entertainment upgrade which includes rear DVD, 17 inch alloys, 6 disc with bluetooth, and rear parking sonar. I hate the way toyotas are packaged, but this configuration is not too bad. Just wish it had power trunk but I can't afford the XLE.
  • bboy2bboy2 Member Posts: 9
Unless I configured it wrong I'm showing invoice at $27,226. So your quote of 26k is a good one. Invoice price should not reflect $1,000 rebate. You are correct that it is an either or so you must choose $1,000 or 2.9% apr. It seems like a fair quote to me. Good luck!
  • s4f4ms4f4m Member Posts: 19
My Toy salesman said that they are selling all vehicles (except new models and hybrids) for $500 - $700 UNDER dealer invoice (BEFORE incentive). Maybe they're throwing in all-weather mats, too? :D Plus, all parts accessories are discounted close to cost for internet buyers.

PM/email me, if you want to know who the dealer is (and what state).
  • toyboy8toyboy8 Member Posts: 1
Anybody care to share the recent pricing details in southeast region? Southeast has a $1500 incentive from Jan 1st, and I am getting quotes at or above invoice before the incentive. Thanks!
  • allyssaallyssa Member Posts: 4
To get a dealer to match another's price.....what do you need ? Is a copy of an internet email with a quote good enough? How about an internet ad from cars.com? I live near fitzgeralds but they dont have my color :(
  • bboy2bboy2 Member Posts: 9
All it took for me was saying "Thanks for your time and detailed quote, unfortunately one of your competitors gave me a better quote of $XX,XXX. Thanks,
I was honest with my numbers in case they called BS that way I could send them a copy of the quote to show proof. In all situations they counter offered, or gave me the ol "if my manager allows me to match it will you buy from us?". I'm currently down to my top 3 and I think I am going to make a game of it. I was thinking of sending the same email to all of the top 3 and say. You have been the top 3 most competitive quotes. However, one of you is the lowest at $XX,XXX I will accept one more quote from each of you and select the best one and be there with a check in hand. We'll see how that works!
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Get an e-quote from 355 Toyota in Rockville, and then compare CarMax Toyota's price as well.

I was able to beat Fitzmall's price by about $250 or so at 355.

Fitz' prices are still competitive, though, and I would shop there again.
