My wife and I have driven '06 models of each within the past week. Honda was an EX and the Toyota was an LE with one of the many packages (BW, I believe) that add one power door, rear disk brakes, stability control, alloy wheels, etc.

From a pure driving experience (my priority), the Honda was the clear winner. It was a little noisier but not much. Handling was vastly better. Steering was crisper. Seats were firmer (good thing, I think).

Surprisingly (to me anyway), the honda seemed to be the better built of the two also. Everything just felt more solid.

From a financial standpoint (my wife's priority), they were more willing to deal on the Sienna and bottom line price was about $1500 in it's favor, although the EX has more amenities.

I really wanted to like the Sienna since reliability is probably slightly better and the dealership is about 6 miles from home vs. the Honda dealer being ~20. It didn't work. FWIW, it is my wife's decision and if she choses the Sienna, I won't be too disappointed, it's still a real nice van.

    Good luck!

Hi Kominsky-WOW thanks your post was exactly what I needed!!! I want the HONDA but I like the sienna financing incentives 0% for 48 months. I have read that Honda will be coming out with some incentives on Oct. 3rd-but Toyota's end on Oct 2nd so it's in some way a gamble! Do I wait til Oct 3rd and hopefully Honda offers some low fiancing deals and risk the factthat my 2nd choice Sienna's deals could be over?

Not sure what to tell you there. My gut feeling, based on the # of LE's on the lot (about 7 or 8 vs. 1 EX at the Honda dealer), the deals will continue, in some fashion, until they are gone... my gut has been wrong before, though.

Doc Fees are everywhere..it's a fee that dealerships use for fees such as motor vehicle paperwork and other paperwork..in fact, here in NJ we have to charge a Doc Fee, but doesn't mean it's always being charged..for example, Ford Motor Credit Co wants Doc fees to be collected and shown on contracts, if the dealer decides to waive it, you'll still see it on the paperwork what they'll do is take it off somewhere else..but we do have to charge it, but you can have it deducted from somewhere else..it is a BS charge but they have to charge it..

One of the major deciding factors for me in buying the Odyssey was the rear seat head room. I wanted to be able to sit 6 adults comfortably (we have to pick up adults from the airport on occasion) and I'm only 6 feet tall and had to scrunch down to keep from hitting my head in the back seat of the Sienna. I didn't have to scrunch down at all in the Odyssey and found it more comfortable. If you don't need the room then the Sienna would be fine.

Amyw2: Consider what options you may have for cancelling the Sienna purchase within a certain number of days (in order to hedge your bet on the Odyssey financing that you suspect may begin on October 3). These laws vary from state to state, so you should inquire before taking this course of action.

Thanks for everyones replys but I folded last night and bought the 06 Sienna LE with 0% apr and OTD price of 23,300. I think I got a fair deal and I love it!

    Any quotes for 07 EXL?

I was wondering if I should get the 06 EXL for 27,000 + TTL or pay the extra 2-3K (my guess) for 07? Opinions?

    Enjoy!

There a few features on the '07 that the '06 does not have. For instant, the automatic door lock and unlock, XM radio, etc. I have '07 and it is fairly quiet. I heard there are much more rattle noise from the '06. I recommend '07 because of some of the convinience features. Good luck.

I find a dealer who will sell me a 2007 Odyssey LX for $22,000, including destination charge. Is this a good deal in DC Virginia area?

    MSRP: $26,240
    Sale price: $22,000 plus ttt
includes wheel lock and splash guard.

I was first trying to find a 2006 Odyssey LX but it is hard to find now. Most of the dealers have sold out of 06 LX. Only a few of the dealers still have 06 LX but they would not let go for cheap. The lowest price I found for 06 LX is $21,300. And then I discovered 07 LX is not much more expensive.

I also found a 06 Sienna CE for $20,042. This CE comes with CE package #1 (cruise control and roof rack) and Preferred Premium Accessary Package(floor mats and 1st aid kit).

    MSRP: $25,142
    Sales price: $20,042 plus ttt

I am still debating which vehicle to buy. I like both Odyssey and Sienna. The 07 Odyssey is $1958 more expensive than the 06 Sienna.

Thanks for your reply fx35awd. I called a couple of dealers and they said they would sell 07 EXL for Invoice + TTL. They say Invoice is 28748 (incl destination). On 06 they want around 27,000. I don't think I would want 06 for $1700 less as compared to 07. I will try to negotiate a little bit more on 07. Do you mind sharing your experience and price you paid?
  • fx35awdfx35awd Member Posts: 218
Oh no, I would not mind at all. I did some research for you and base on Kelly Blue Book, the posted invoice is actually 28,548 so they quoted you actually $200 over, which is not bad for an '07 Ody EX-L. It is still is good price. However, mine is '07 Ody EX-L with Navigation and DVD. I was quoted it at 31,600 which is $400 below invoice, but when I actually told them I was serious about buying he told me the van has a few accessories on it(cross bar and mud/splash guards) which I have to pay for so I agreed so my actually pricing is $31,950 ($50 below invoice). I knew I got a good deal on this van because I had quotes requests for 25-27 dealerships, but majority of the quotes came in over invoice pricing ranging from $300 to $1300, also, most of them do not have my '07 model in stock. This van is very rare when it comes in the combination of DVD and Navigation, according to many dealerships. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need additional help.

BETTER deal than local dealers here where about $ 1,000 discount is the best one can get.
Remember the 2007 Odyssey LX is one model year newer which would be worth more than the $ 1958 cost over a 2006 Sienna CE. :shades:

I'm located in San Diego and also looking to buy a Honda Odysessy EXL. Three weeks ago, a friend bought a 2006 Honda Odysessy EXL for $27,458 (includes destination charge) + taxes and fees at the Costa Mesa Honda. I got a quote for $27,500 + fees & taxes from the El Cajon Honda for 2006. However, I decided to look for a 2007 Honda Odysessy EXL instead. The cheapest quote I got so far is also from El Cajon Honda for $29,678. It is still too expensive in my opinion since El Cajon charges 8.25% tax and Costa Mesa is 7.75% tax. Plus, someone on this site wrote that the invoice price for 2007 Odysessy EXL is $28,748 (includes destination charge). Anyway, what are your experiences with the Honda dealers in San Diego? Should I look in LA or elsewhere?
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
Is the 2006 EX-L the colors you want? Or, is the 2007 EXL the color combinations you want?
BUY the one that is EXACTLY what you want when you are spending over $ 27K for a new vehicle. :shades:
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
That's a great price for an '07 LX which, I believe, has more safety equipment than the Toyota.

Easy choice there, go with the Honda.
  • sandbox2sandbox2 Member Posts: 3
Well, I bought the 06 Sienna yesterday. My wife does not like the color of the 07 Odyssey, and Sienna dropped the price further to $20,000, which is $5142 below MSRP.

06 Sienna, CE package #1, preffered accessary package
    MSRP: $25,142
    Sale: $20,000 including freight
    On the road: $21,407

The car has only 7 miles on it. It was manufactured in 09/2006. The dealer showed me the document that it arrived to the lot just a week ago. So this is definately not a lemon. I have driven the van for about 20 miles. Love it!

    Hi sdtweetie,
I was in your same boat a few weks ago. A couple of things:
    1. Inventory of the EX-L's (especially popular colors) is extremely low in SD and they mentioned that they would not be getting anymore in.
    2. A lot of SD dealer really do not work with you. Worst one I experienced was Honda of Escondido. When trying to work on the price, they still do the "let me check with my manager" trick, big waist of time and patience.

I know there is a great need to get rid of the 2006, now the best bet is to target a dealer that is moves a large quantity of these cars. They get special kickback on inventory turns. Dealers in LA will move a lot more than those in SD. My best suggestion to you is to definitely (without any question) neogotiate over the internet and at the very end over the phone. Nail it down to every cost including tax, dest...etc. (By the way on taxes it doesn't matter where you buy, you should be able to get your own tax base from where you reside so make sure the dealer notes your tax base of 7.75%). I found the best internet quote I could get then used that to work a better deal for the color of car I wanted. If you want I can email you the sales guy's name I worked with...cool guy. Good Luck! :shades:

Sorry to hear that the droning is still there. I took a test drive today (highway and local roads) and did not notice the droning noise. Since my wife also could not detect the noise, we took the plunge today. We bought a 2007 EXL with RES and NAV for: 31,674. This price included the destination charge and the protection package (Wheel nuts, cargo tray and splash guards). We also paid 1400 for the cross bars and towing package. I also negotiated with the dealer for two free wireless headphones and two free oil changes. Out the door price with Tax (7%), tag and doc prep was (35861). I hope this post will help others with their purchase.
  • sdtweetiesdtweetie Member Posts: 5
2006 didn't have the color I want, which is white and quite popular but they do have silver, which is close. 2007 EXL has a lot of white color available.
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
We like white exterior the most but do not want a light colored interior where the carpet will look dirty too quickly. With leather, you won't have the problem with the seats that we would with cloth seats.
Because white exterior comes with light colored seats and carpet, we prefer our 2nd choice exterior Ocean Mist Metallic with the darker cloth and carpet.

Hi all, just wanted to inquire on fx35awd'S post regarding a EXL with Navi and DVD.You quoted a price of 31,600 without the extras, which sounds like a great deal.I'm here in Los Angeles, what was your price out the door inc all fees???I'm a fan of OTD pricing only because it make them work all the extras into the price so there are no suprises.
I'm currently looking to purchase a Nimbus Gray metallic
with DVD/Navi here in the next 2 weeks. This site has been great so far and welcome anyone's input or advice regarding
    pricing on this car.
    Thanks,

    Hatteras,

Did you ever clarify your price befor TTL.....I agree with prior comments that OUT THE DOOR PRICE can be misleading due to varyiing tax & title based on state to state....Can I get some clarification from anyone on the BEST price PRIOR TO TTL for a 2007 Touring Odyssey w Nav & DVD..

    Thank you

Could you tell the dealership you received the 07 Honda quote from? I requested a quote from College Park Honda on an 07 LX and their's was 24,600. The sticker was a little higher so it might have included the appearance package. At any rate, the lowest 06 lx quote I have is 22,960.

If you could let me know the dealaership I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance,

Hey, congratulation on your purchase. Great deal. There is the droning sound, but very shuttle. I would not have noticed if I did not get on this forum. So basically it is so shuttle that it does not bother me at all. With that said, I am so far a happy camper on the purchase of this van. What color did you purchased? :D
  • fx35awdfx35awd Member Posts: 218
Yeah, but unfortunately it had a few extras when I purchased it. When I purchased a lot of dealerships did not have what I wanted in stock or none at all so I have to settle for extras, but I still got it under the internet posted invoice. The out the door price is $34,900 and some change. Here is a rule of thumb, you should take the base price, destination charge included and multiply by 1.1 (Only apply to Los Angeles Region and any where that might have the 8.25% tax) and that will get you a rough out the door price for your car. This factor 1.1 is slightly higher than the actually OTD pricing. The actual number is some where along 1.095. I hope this helps.

    No Problem!

Yes the breakdown is such :

    Sale Price: 31289.62
    tax (6.25%) 1955.60
    inventory tax 77.35
    license fee 69.80
    title fee 33
    state insp 21.75
    transfer fee 5

    Total Price $33,502.12

Good Luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

We got the Ocean Mist. We noted that our 99 Odyssey was not exactly quiet on the raod. I don't believe a quiet cabin is the Odyssey's strength. We ready tried hard to detect the droning but it must have been very low. We figure ignorance is bliss. Your post really helped us since we used it as our target. We had a good experience with our dealer since I was prepared and knew what I needed to get the deal done. I sensed they knew that and the rest is history. I hope my post will help others as well.
  • fx35awdfx35awd Member Posts: 218
That is a rare color. I do not see many of those on the road. After I purchased my white odyssey, two other people in the building bought the same color, one to two weeks after my purchase. Ugh!!!:D :(

Hey, I am glad my posting helped you on your purchase and I am sure other will find your information useful as well. Enjoy your new purchase. :)

I purchased a new 06 Odyssey EX from a dealer in San Francisco, CA recently. When I took it home, I noticed it had little specs over the whole car (including windows). I would think that a new car's paint is smooth and shiny. After a week, a friend looked at it and thought it was paint over- spray. After looking over the whole van, found that the front left half of the bumper was repainted poorly with lint, dust specs, specs that looks like fish eyes embedded in the paint. The repaired color was well matched though, otherwise I would have noticed the problem earlier. I suspect a cheapy repair to keep it under $500, otherwise they would have to disclose the prior damage because of CA law.

Now that I discovered the car was repaired, I didn't think it was a new car any longer and will always have a question in my mind that the car may have hidden damage.
I tried to request an exchange for another car a week after purchase under the argument that:
    1) the damage would have been more than $500 if it was repaired properly.
    2) damage was not disclosed.
    3) Prior to purchase, I explicity asked the sales rep whether the car has been in a accident, and he said no.
    4) The day I purchased the car, it was so dirty I could not tell the condition of the paint.

Anyways they balked at the return. They also claimed they did not know about the damage because the care was traded from another dealer.
I showed the work to several body shops and they all said it would be more than $500 to repair/repaint properly.

The dealer has refused to accept the car back, and has only offered to repaint it properly, which I reluctantly accepted. I will always be concerned that the car has other undisclosed flaws/or damage. I've owned the car for 2.5 weeks, but it's been in their shop for 1.5 weeks.

Can dealers get away with stuff like this?
Are there any other recourse ?
I feel I paid close to $30k for a new car experience, but never received it. The whole experience has been very disappointing.

    thanks

    Richard

They can only get away with it if you let them.

I work for a car dealership and we always have the cars cleaned before delivery. No one should ever take a car dirty, I would make them clean it and I would inspect it right in front of them. What probably happened in your case since they said they got the car from another dealer, whomever drove the car, got in an accident and the dealer tried to fix it. But, if you asked if it ever was in an accident, they should of said something and then they had to bring the price down depending if you still wanted to take it. Thats "BS" when they told you that they didn't know the damage because the car was from another dealer..when a dealer takes in a dealer trade, they have to prep the car for delivery..they have to go through the vehicle for any possible damage and that's when they find it and a good dealership will send the car back for damage. So, I think what really happened, the dealer you purchased it probably damaged the vehicle and they were stuck with it so they had to get rid of it and they did. You were scammed and I would fight it!!!

    Hi sandiego99,

I'm sorry but your email to me was deleted by the host and I can't post my email because it got deleted in my other post and I got an email saying that's not allowed. Anyway, I purchased a 2007 Silver Honda Odyssey EXL for $30,500 OTD, which is $28,002 before taxes and fees. I thought it was a great deal so I took it. The dealership is in Cerritos, a little far but with the savings, its worth it. Thanks for your advice regarding the LA dealers. I still wish I knew where you got your car but of course, the host deleted your message and you can't email me. I wanted to thank you for your post and for getting me to try LA dealerships. I think it made a world of difference for pricing. Thanks...btw, I got 7.75% tax because I'm located in SD even though the dealer is in LA, just like you said.
Maybe I'll see you on the road in SD...just don't cut me off...hehehe...

    Hi sdtweetie,
Your welcome! Actually I got my Honda from Cerritos as well. Norm Reeves Honda - to be exact. They had a good of selection of models and colors. I think you have a good deal seeing that it is a 2007. Glad to hear that you got the correct tax rate, every bit counts. See you on the road!! I'll be driving a '06 Silver Pearl! :shades:

    Hi sandiego99,

Funny...I also got my 2007 Odyssey at Norm Reeves Honda. They sold a white one the night before so I got a Silver one instead. I think its also called a Silver Pearl. I hope its a good deal for a 2007 Odyssey. Plus, the salesperson gave me a few extra accessories that made it worth it for me. Thanks for your advice. See you on the road!!!

    Hi,

Got my '07 Odyssey Touring (Nimbus Gray) w/ Nav & RES on Sep 29 from Galpin Honda in Mission Hills, CA

    Vehicle Cash Price - $36,591
    Document Fee - $45
    Sales Tax - $2656
License, Registration, Tire Fees - $308

    Out-The-Door Price = $39,600

Not sure if this is the best price, but I was happy when I drove it off the dealer lot. Very nice car!
  • swwesqswwesq Member Posts: 3
I bought my wife's 07 EXL- w/NAV & RES 2 weeks ago for $300 over invoice. It came out to $32,300 plus tt & l, about $35k out the door. I made a deal with the dealer just as the van hit the lot and before they had a chance to stick on a bunch of dealer installed options. They did say they had to do the interior/exterior protection package, but that was figured in the price.

I was suprised when I bluffed a few dealers about being able to get an 07 loaded at invoice, but they all quickly turned from a few hundred under MSRP to a few hundred over invoice. About a 4k gap!

Anyone else buying an 07, if a dealer won't go a few hundred over invoice, move on to another dealer!
  • rsmith6rsmith6 Member Posts: 2
Any suggestions on how to fight this?
I tried to revert the transaction on the vehicle or exchange for a new one from the dealer.

    Their response was that:
    1) they should get an opportunity to fix it right. ( which is taking way too long, 2 attempts and 2 weeks elapsed already )
    2) They said I would lose my sales tax on a return or exchange since that's already paid out to the city government.
3)Since it's a registered car they cannot sell it as a new car any more.

Car has been at the dealer body shop for last 2 out of the weeks I've owned it.

    thanks in advance.

I agree with every one of their points..

I know it is disappointing to have problems with a brand new car.... but, expecting them to take it back is just not realistic..

You are asking for something that will never happen... Give them a chance to fix the car..

I would agree except, based on what has been posted previously, there appears to be fraud here.

If the dealer thinks it's costly to make things right now, it's nothing compared to the price he might pay down the road.

That said, I'm most curious as to how extensive the paintwork was. Is there evidence of previous body damage or just a scratch re-paint? Hard to understand why it would take 2 weeks to rectify.
  • skyhawkskyhawk Member Posts: 126
I would start with the Consumer Protection Division in your state's Attorney Generals Office. Next lodge a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Lastly contact a lawyer that deals with consumer protection. The dealership has been less than honest with you so don't hesitate to become a thorn in their side. There is no reason for you to be unhappy for several years. It would seem that there might be more problems than paint. Good luck.

Your experience describes why I will NEVER buy a vehicle in a dealer switch.
Many states charge sales tax on the difference you paid between your old vehicle and the new one. The dealership should take your Odyssey back and give you another one of the same MSRP at NO cost to you. There should be NO sales tax either.
There is NO way a vehicle that has been in any accident will be the same as a NEW one.
Sadly, you may have to get an attorney to put sufficient pressure on the dealership to take back your damaged goods and give you a new undamaged Odyssey.

Hello everyone, I have an urgent queston here for my internet quote, which I got from a dealer in Phoenix area. I'm looking for a 2006 EXL model and they offered me an out of door price as 30,000. Is this price reasonable? Because I'm planning to visit this dealership next weekend, I really hope I could get some advices here. Thank you very much in advance.
  • cccompsoncccompson Member Posts: 2,382
Hard to say because tax rates vary by location - that's why OTD comparisons are unreliable.

Break it down - vehicle price (including any dealer installed accessories), dealer (doc) fee (just an addition to the price), and taxes and title.
