hood scoop: how will you be able to "turn it on or off"? if we cuold do that it would be great. because ideally i would like to use it functional only in dry weather, no rain and all that, to prevent potential problems. i mean besides just taknig out the box, u think we could make something mechanical?
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
There is only about a 1.5" clearance between the engine and the hood.
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
I have some motors and some vacume systems that should work. something like the Exhaust Bypass units. Could even use pipe(used in water plumbing) gates operated by cable. These come in 3"and I believe bigger sizes.

u really need aim.....so we can talk easier...

4 inchs clearance with my hood scoop....

those windshild washer nozzles with the LED's in them.
  • avalanche165avalanche165 Member Posts: 558
yea i am planning on running a 3 inch pipe directly to intake. not sure about the setup tho. could go rubber and and use fasteners to tie down to hood. no actually silicon would be better, more heat resistant and durable. what about a pvc type pipe tho? air would run through that better right?

We might just have to start using the chat room.
Will talk some more later (work today:( )

Finally -- something for the 300M! But $269 for something that I don't even like. If they auto-dimmed, I'd consider them...

  • fastdriverfastdriver Member Posts: 2,273
    avalanche165-

The mirrors on your 99 are heated when you turn on the defroster.

A little while back on Ebay there was a "Service Manual Supplement" for '99 LHS and 300M. I own the Service Manual that covers all LH models. Anyone know specifically what is in the supplement for LHS and 300M? Thoughts on what it's worth?
  • madcityrussmadcityruss Member Posts: 40
Thanks, I'll be on the lookout for one.

Fortunately I saw the reply before they erased it. Just for the record, there was nothing even vaguely off-color or obscene about the response. It was just a table of contents, which I appreciated.

Hers some info I thought might be interesting to anyone that bought or will buy a 300M with miles on it. Mine had 2700 miles on it (driven by sales manager). Bought it July 00.Just rec'd extended warranty application stating that my "In Service Date" was 11/22/99???? Called DC to question. Was told thats when my dealer put it in service. Moral of the story: I lost 10 months of my warranty and the dealer never mentioned it nor is it in any of my papaper work.I was really HOT until I realized that I will hit 36k before 3/36 runs out; Still have not talked to dealer; waiting to cool down!!!! Thought people might want to check out their own "In Service Dates". I guess the adage "Let the buyer beware" is still in effect.

We stopped to fill up the M today and an older man beside us asked me if our car was a 300. He said he used to have a 99' without any problems except that he couldn't see out of it very well. So at 21,000 miles and 11 months he said it was time to trade it. He now was driving a dark blue 01' Buick Lesabre and said that he liked it more than the M. I thought the big, dumb Buick was just ugly and I don't know how you can go from an 300M to a Lesabre.

Anyone have the part number from back cover of the '99 Service Supplement? Its 81-????-????. I need this number to order one. (Feel free to email direct if you should happen to be banned from Edmunds.) Thanks.
  • ruskiruski Member Posts: 1,566
why did that old guy have to ask you whether it was a 300M that you were filling up. I mean he used to have one, he should know what it looks like. Or is he senile?

why not install a rain sensor--I believe they use it in the caddies to turn on the wipers automatically---you could mount in on the black plastic in the wiper area---then connect it to a solenoid operated door on the the scoop---beats having to remember to turn it on and off--so what does Av--the solenoid expert --think about this idea

I have a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 w/functional cowl induction hood. It has a switch on the accelerator pedal that controls a solenoid that opens and closes a flapper door in the scoop. Under normal driving conditions the hood scoop is closed, when the accelerator pedal is floored (can be adjusted at the accelarator pedal when to kick in) it then opens the flapper door to let in cool air. All of these parts are readily available through the restoration businesses. Just an idea for you guys.

I THINK I've done all the mods that I'm going to do on Big Red. Here is a picture of her in full glory in front of my house (which also just got a lot of mods on the landscaping). In the last 10 weeks I have installed a custom clock face,a K&N filter, dual exhaust, tinted windows, a hood cover, and a spoiler, and have removed the Chrylser lettering. Thanks to everyone for your help and motivation along the way.

Also, here is a link to my "badge removal" pictures that show the process I used. Pretty simple:

And the link to an index of albums that show the installation of the clock face, spoiler, and dual exhaust, and the removal of the lettering.

Would you recommend M&M now that you have the tint? I used Mr. Tint and they were OK. Did you get metallic? I want to tint my LS and I would appreciate the details on the tint job. You can e-mail me at airconhall@cs.com .

    Thank you, Mike
PS, what's up with this weather? :(

im done chroming both the front grills. looks good!!
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Hey Ez.. I actually got my tint job done at Tint Devil on Miramar road. It was a lot closer to me, and they use Llumar film versus M&M's 3M film. The more I read about tinting, the more the opinions swung towards Llumar. The tint that I got (just standard stuff) is partially metalized, and you can see the increased reflection in some of the photos. It doesn't look metalic, just like a nice shiny tinted window. They also have a metallic film that is very reflective and somewhat aluminum looking. They had a silver Mercedes in their shop with it and it was incredible looking on the silver car. Just wouldn't have looked right on my red one. Tint devil did a decent job except for a couple of areas on the back window that were thick with radio and defroster wires. I'll go back in and have those areas fixed up in a week or so. Overall I really like it.

Oh yeah...this weather bites. It was gorgeous the last few days though. I guess we're in the "june gloom" already.

Pictures and a description of the process please! (oh carp...another possible mod. lol)
  • beach15beach15 Member Posts: 1,305
I think I have an idea of what you mean by chroming the grills but what exactly did you do? Did you chrome the gray plastic parts of the grill or what? Oh yeah, how's that rumbling exhaust going? How exactly and what parts were used again? Please post pics of all this soon!!!! I keep going to your site and hitting refresh, just waiting for something but it isn't there yet.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
My tint photo gallery has descriptions of the film darkness I used on the different windows. Check for a link above by the pictures of Big Red.

Hey. Does anyone know if the chrome that comes around the outside windows of the 2001s can be applied to the 1999s. As well as the gear shift and leather boot for the gear shift. I would like a tad bit more chrome. Also, if it is possible, where to get it? The dealership I assume, but I'm sure there could be cheaper places.

ill have pics on the site bye tomorrow afternoon of the grill and the duals..

ok for the dual exhaust i had the pipes cut right after the converters, ran them into a flowmaster, then ran them all the way down to the tips. i have chromed Y tips on both sides. its somewhat load but i love it. at idle and low speeds it says "dont mess with me!!" at higher speeds it has a somewhat higher pitch which is okay cuz its not very loud unless u speed up, so on highways its fine.. partially cuz i have the radio so loud anyway lol.

for the grill i bought Automotive Door Edge Molding, part # S393120, it comes in a
box of 25' for like 10.99. it takes a couple hours to do cuz u have to sit there with an exacto and cut it so that the vertical pieces on the grills wont interfere (on the bottom only, its unnoticable cuts). it looks real good, adds to the class, that i killed with the loud exhaust lol.

p.s. i still havent completely ruled out putting a muffler on each pipe to quiet it down a bit, but i love it like this! but i think i like complete luxury more. heck i dont know.... lol

I think you would be able to put the 2001's chrome trim on a 99'. I looked at mine once and found out that the door trim around the outside windows and on the b-pillar area is just a single piece. It looks like it could just be snapped off and replaced fairly easily. There is some little rubber pieces that line the window edges in that area and I'm not sure about how to work around those though. It still shouldn't be too hard.

As for the leather boot shifter surround, that's a very easy thing to do. Just find a 00' or 01' 300M shifter surround and exchange it for yours. Some here have done this and it doesn't seem to hard. The chrome and leather shifter has been discontinued though, and may be a little harder to find. Several of us on this board have been trying to hunt one down ourselves. Keep checking this board and you'll probably find out somewhere to get one.

A good place to check for these items is copartfinder.com. They have wrecked cars for parts from different places across the country.

Thanks man. I will check it out.
  • beach15beach15 Member Posts: 1,305
How did you put door edge molding on the grills? I can understand the lower grill but the smaller, top one still puzzles me. Well, I guess I'll just have to wait to see the pics tomorrow or whenever.
  • phases78phases78 Member Posts: 471
the chrome trim is door edge trim. it will certanly work on there. its nothing like the trim going around the windows it thats what your thinking of. it kinda clamps around and edge with an adhesive in the middle. its looks just like a "U" if u look at it from the sides.

I was at a local raceshop today talking about playing more with my TB. One of the owners has a 300M and he told me a couple of interesting things.

    1) The molded plastic intake between the stock air box hose and the TB has a restrictor plate in it to reduce air flow. It's not enough to put in a new hose and cone filter and get rid of resonator.

    2) The Program for a Prowler can be downloaded to a 300M for an additional 55 HP. Supposedly makes the car 301HP.

    3) Item 1 exists and the 300m is detuned from the Prowler due to "breaking half shafts" in the 42LE tranny.

Anyone know what a "half shaft" is? Is this the part where the sprockets and chains are used to connect the engine to the tranny?

I need to talk to him some more as he indicated someone (not sure who) can fix the tranny problem.

Anyway, I wanted them to properly bore out my TB, maybe even increase the size of the throttle plate to 70mm+. I gotta go back during the week when the guy that does that work is there.

Some folks on DodgeIntrepid.net are making/selling replacement 3" intakes that should fix problem 1 listed above. I'm gonna take mine apart tommorrow and see this restriction for myself. I heard the Dodge guys saying the 1st gen cars has this and it was easily removed.

Avalanche, since you know some people at your local dealer, can you see if the Prowler program load thing is true and can you get them to do it?
  • lonestarsledlonestarsled Member Posts: 226
Chrysler rates the prowler the same HP as the 300M, LHS and I guess the Intrepid w/the 3.5 liter engine at about 250 HP @ 6200 rpm. I doubt that there is a basic firmware difference between each of the cars.

Half shafts is the term used for the small driveshafts that come from the transaxle and drive the wheels, one on each side of the car.

Don't know about the restricted air intake.
  • kpm61kpm61 Member Posts: 35
I beleive the 3.5 liter Intrepid R/T is rated at 242 HP.
