How good is a nice new deck when it's all full of bullet holes, via the American Way? I guess it's similiar to the Canadian way though, cause, well, we'd just use all dem holes as beer holders anyhow.

Hey Mike, have you received anything for this ignition coil recall yet?
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
7.7 or 8.2 is subjective rating.
It has no correlation to decibels.

What it means that the people who bought dunlop spA2 were shopping for sport tires(inherently noisy) and were surprised at their quiteness and hence the higher rating.

people shopping for the BFG were looking for a quiter tire....and ahem....found out their car does not drive with tomb-like silence and hence rate it lower.

    subjective...subjective....

let's get a dB meter in here first. Then argue.

Anyway, did anybody try the rear seat? ;)
try it out and get the thrill of your life as a passenger.

Now I know why my daughter ALWAYS wants to travel in my MAZDA, and not in my wifes' taurus.

No recall info.....it apparently only affects 99/00 Proteges.

Meade: Deck should only cost about $1100-1300 CDN...it's only going to be 12'x18' or so. Anyway, her dad is (was??) going to help.

The reason the car (the Jetta...not my Pro) problem may stop it is that I wanna make sure we have all unexpected expenses covered and, depending on repair costs, it could leave us really tightly budgeted :(
  • gandalf17gandalf17 Member Posts: 348
I forgot you had the 2001 LX. I do have the 2000 Protege with the 1.8L, but like Meade, I have not experienced any of the so called symptoms associated with the faulty ignition coil. I'm just becoming increasingly curious as to whether this recall will come to Canada. Hopefully, if affected, I would receive the notification shortly and have it dealt with. I am reluctant to change it out though since I'm very pleased with the cars performance etc. all.

Sorry to hear that your g/f's Jetta has a bit of the Montezuma's revenge. You should get her to trade the taco in for a Protege.

It felt weird!!!! I almost didn't recognize my car from that particular location! :D

the seats are firm but very comfortable, and plenty of headroom too! :D
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
Why not call your dealership and check it out? They should be able to look by your VIN. Also, the cars are all from the same factory, regardless of whether it's going to the US or Canada, so I would think that any '99-00 CDN Pro is affected as well.
  • chikoochikoo Member Posts: 3,008
    to flare up :D

    Howdy!

    Try the rear seat meade.
Believe me. It will be the ride you will never forget.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
    Sorry didn't reply earlier...

I sat in the back once...I didn't like it...Not that it was uncomfortable, but I much prefer the driver's seat! :D
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
Although I find plenty of leg and foot room, and I think the seats are comfortable. The roof comes down too quickly for me. My head bangs on the headliner or the glass.

However, I do fit in the P5's rear seat just fine due to the extended roofline.

I'd rather be in the driver's seat anyhow. :)

...in May. And was pleasantly surprised by how roomy it was.

(And you can all get your minds outta the gutter...his wife was in the front seat. I SAID, get your minds outta the gutter!)

Anyway, as I was saying, there really was quite a bit of leg room. Didn't feel cramped at all. Since I'm short, though, headroom really isn't a factor.
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
in the back of my P5 many times. I made sure to ride in the back on the test drive too. None of my friends are taller than me so I figured if I was comfortable then they also would be confortable in the back.

I always find it amazing how much room I have back there. And yes Dale, my mind is in the gutter.......

Check out the edmunds article on the 03 Accord. I have owned an Accord. I loved it, especially the looks. This new one is... bland/plain ugly. The new 6 is much better (in looks, and handling). But even better is my 02 ES. My new love will be with me for a long time (unless I crunch it). If that happens... hello 6.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
I rode in the back seat of my 1999 DX once. I was surprised at the amount of room, especially since the driver's seat was one notch from all the way back. Headroom was fine, because the aftermarket sunroof I had installed was the outter-opening type.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
... prompts a comment from me. (BTW, thanks for the compliment Dale. You should've thrown in your comment about my tires while you were at it -- but beggars can't be choosers.)

I have taken an extended trip in the back seat of my Protege while a friend drove it. I was very comfortable. The only thing I really missed was the freakin' rear center armrest my '92 had!

About a year ago I took my parents on a trip to the Chesapeake Bay to go sailing. The trip was about two hours each way, and since Tammy and I were in the front seats, they had to ride in back. Both were astounded at the amount of room the back seat had -- it didn't appear that way from outside and they were expecting to be cramped. In fact, they said it had more room in the back seat than their Buicks.

Dale, I noticed you didn't mention were I was in the car ...

    ;-)

Now, now, now Meade....who is the incorrigible one, eh? Stop teasing me like that. :) So, what's the psi in the Dunny's? If your an Aussie, that sounds quite funny really....

So, what's the scoop? Don't make me come over there and eat all your ribs.
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
"Dang, Meade...you're right! These Dunlops ARE much quieter than the Poortenzas! I really thought you were crazy going on and on about tire noise! But now I see what you're talking about! You're not crazy, after all!"

    {...or something like that...}
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
    I think. ;-)

Now, I'm off to lunch. Got a lunch meeting with some old friends from a former job. Oughta be fun.

Oh, about the tire pressure ...

I don't have time right now. Back in a couple hours ...

And OK, I won't make you wait any longer.

Actually, I was a little surprised!

    Front left: 32 -------- Front right: 31
Rear left: 30 ----------Rear Right: 30.5

    Hmmmmm!!!

I think I'll stop by my handy Texaco (with its FREE air pump) on the way home today and put 'em all up to about 33 and see what that's like.

As I was leaving lunch today, I came out to my car to find a junkie old Civic parked a little too close to my rear bumper. My fears were confirmed when I found my never-before-touched rear bumper had been smacked and gouged by his front license plate, and the bolts on his plate had gone completely through my paint, leaving the black bumper cover beneath the paint showing.

Boy was I pissed, to put it mildly. Sure, he didn't dent me, and the fix will be fairly easy with a little careful touch-up painting, but YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE ZOOMSTER!!!

I needed to make a U-turn in an alleyway halfway down the block to get back in the direction of work, and it was there that I found his retribution.

I hope he has fun cleaning all that gravel off his hood!

  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
I don't dare get on your bad side.

However, I think "touch-feely" parkers have it coming to them. I mean, really, do they need to get THAT close?
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
    NO!

  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
So funny...just a few weeks ago on another board, people were talking about taking retribution on people that took up two spots by parking close to them.

    Vicious cycle, or what?!!

  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
So you threw gravel all over his car? And what did that do to his junky Civic? He probably didn't even care, but he damaged your car.

So how did that help the situation?
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
The board we were talking about that on was the Jetta board. Everyone started talking about door dings, then it went to revenge.
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
    Yet another Seinfeldian reference....

Meade, sorry...I didn't mean to make light of how you must be feeling!

I can tell you I'd be *fairly* upset, but due to the life I'm leading (or trying to lead), I couldn't do what you did.

That said, I'd probably wait for the person and have a few words with him/her....making sure there were witnesses :D

  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
    Yes mommy.

    Geez.

Have you not heard the Klingon proverb, "Revenge is a dish best served cold?"

It is very cold in space ...

To get off the Khan reference ...

What it accomplished, Paul, was a little sweet revenge; a little making the guy wonder who the you-know-what threw gravel all over his car. Since it was a junky car, you're right, he probably didn't care too much about whether it scratched it or not. But it did inconvenience him, since he'll have to get the gravel off of his wipers and out of the cowling where it's blocking his vents and washers. And it wasn't as mean as some revenge tactics I've heard here which involve real body damage. The gravel was small and probably didn't scratch the car anyway.

Besides, a loogie might've dried off before he got back.

Nobody messes with my baby and gets away with it. Not if I can positively pin down the culprit. At the very least, they get a lecture and a scowl.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
... the non-confrontational "who dunnit?" approach. Unless, of course, there's real body damage -- then I'm taking license numbers and calling 911.

I had the same thing happen, both corners no less. I was really upset, and the passenger side was quite bad. Very noticeable on my Sand Mica color, having the black bumper show through. I got touch up paint, it looks better, but not great. I've noticed the touch up paint matches perfectly in direct sunlight, but in the evening or in the shade, ie not in direct sunlight, the touched up area paint looks much darker.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Oh well, I guess I'm the one who'll have to wait for your reply now. I'm leaving now for the weekend. Everybody have a good weekend -- time to go get Zoomster and take him home and put some lotion on his wounds!!!

If someone were to park their rear bumper into my new car I'd be furious. One time coming to the parking lot of the airport we were met with a Ford/Chevy truck (can't remember which one) who had decided to get up close and personal with the bumper of our Acura. Needless to say the Ford truck ended up with a squiggly key mark. Don't know who did it though ;)

To get back to the Protege....how long is Mazda doing the deferred payment + 0.0% deal? That seems like a VERY good deal. Is it almost time for the new Protege to come out or are they just not selling?
  • pjd58pjd58 Member Posts: 366
we don't live in NYC, when New Yawker's:) parallel park, they always hit the other car's bumper. It's just the norm to tap the car as you park in most large cities(Very rude and thoughtless). I hardly ever parallel park and always garage my Pro, the kid's in my neighborhood are brutal on cars.

Does anyone know where I can get a used driver's side mirror or reduced priced driver's side mirror for my 99 Protege (it is a power mirror and not manual)?

I checked with the dealer and they said that with installation it will run be about $250 which is a little steep considering my current financial situation and I am trying to avoid incurring this expense if at all possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
