    I have a 2001 GTwagon, and since apparent problem with ABS I have tried under all sorts of conditions including the ones that are listed as contributing to the problem and no way can I dublicate it.

      I have tried on 16" and 17" wheels and tires I have tried on snow tires, all season, and straight summer tires and have had no problem,so although you no doubt have reason to feel as you do I have to agree with Frank.

     You cannot can a whole car make because of some problems, obviously Subaru are working on it and it has not been that much of a problem or there would surely have been a recall by now.

      Cheers Pat.

    Alberto-

    Pervasive also means: all-encompassing, widespread, wholesale, utter, permeating, sweeping, total, etc.

    Whether it was you intention or not, your statement implies that every Subaru has the same defect. I did check NHTSA's complaint database and found scant evidence of a "pervasive” problem. I did find a half dozen complaints from WRX and Impreza owners but there were zero ABS complaints (at least for 2003) for Foresters or for Legacy/Outbacks. When you consider that Subaru sold well over 100,000 vehicles in the US in 2003, the number of ABS complaints isn't very significant.

    Interestingly enough though, I did see one complaint for the Baja that matches the description of your accident:

    18 OCT 2003: TOTAL ABS BRAKE SYSTEM FAILURE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO STOP VEHICLE IN LIGHT TRAFFIC AT LESS THAN 20 MPH ON DRY SURFACE. FIRST ATTEMPT TO BRAKE MET WITH UNDUE BRAKE PEDAL RESISTANCE WITH NO STOPPING ACTION. SECOND ATTEMPT MET WITH UNRESTRICTED PEDAL TRAVEL TO THE FLOOR WITH NO STOPPING ACTION. VEHICLE ONLY STOPPED ON IMPACT. THE DRIVER AND TWO OTHER PEOPLE WERE INJURED.

    While this certainly does sound like there was a problem with the brakes, from the information provided, it does not seem to be the same ABS issue as the WRX (no mention was made of either a rough surface or the ABS engaging/pulsing).

    Regardless, with Patti on the case, you are in good hands and hopefully the cause of the problem can be identified and corrected.

    ...all I said to you is "caveat emptor." Anyway, 'nuff said folks.

    Bygones and good luck!

    INJURED at less than 20mph?

    Pardon me if I say so, but in my opinion that whole account sounds very suspect. Reports alone do not proof make. Once you get enough reports, you'll get those eager to use the 'issue' as an excuse for driver error.

    ...if you ever go back to the NHTSA complaints database, look for ODI ID numbers 8012861, 10041821 and 10026322. They're for ABS failures on Foresters.

    Luckily, your Forester is covered by SoA's TSB 06-31-03 ("Replacement of ECU for ABS Repair"), at no cost to you.

    Again, good luck and happy 2004!

    Alberto- I must be missing something... I found two of the three complaints you referenced (MY-2002) but failed to see any indication that the ABS was a factor. The first case actually stated WHEN PARKING AND BRAKES APPLIED VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD. Hardly something the ABS would be responsible for.

    In any case, I truly do hope that the problem with your Baja's brakes is determined and corrected. It's way to nice a vehicle to just sit in the garage :-)

    oh that unintended acceleration stuff is definitely driver error. always has been, always will. google a bit and you'll find some interesting articles based on real data.

    case information. I don't have enough information on this case, but even if I do, I can't share it here. I will do my best once I have more info. to help the customer. I CAN say that the Forester issues noted on NHTSA were cases I looked at. There were no braking defects from what we found and from what independent inspectors found.

    Please see my reasoning in the header above. It is a challenge, but I hope you all understand. My not commenting should not be construed as agreement or 'hiding' something. Thanks for your understanding.

    Pull the ABS fuse, don't just leave it parked.

    My Forester had its brake master cylinder recalled, but the problem was reported only at temps well below freezing, actually negative temps F.

    I replaced it even though I don't ever get in those temps, because I figured they bled the system for me for free, LOL.

    Can't keep quiet on this...I have had the Forester for 6 months now and have not yet had any ABS braking issues. HOWEVER, our 2000 Chevy 2500HD has misbehaved three times, always ABS issues. Have taken it to the dealer and they have found no problems. Brake pedal misbehaviour happened twice at low speed in our farm yard, and once flying down our farm lane to get the mail. That's just with me driving. It has also happened to my husband. So it's not just a Subaru thing. It's an ABS thing. Just be carefull.

  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497

    Cause you were the one who told me that my wife's wagon was OBS, when I told you it was a Legacy Outback wagon!

    So if anything... PAISAN IS A NOOB! lol.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    not an OBS!

    OB = Outback
    OBS = Outback Sport
    OBs = Outbacks (plural)
    OBSs = Outback Sports (plural)

    :)

    LOL!
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
    Not to be confused with OBW (OB Wagon) and OBS (OB Sedan).

    Wait, what was the question?

    -Dennis
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    I thought that with OB the "W" was implied and that we still referred to the Outback Sedan as SUS (even though the designation was dropped by subaru)

    -mike
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
    because I thought the SUS was just that not OBS or OBW or OB.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    Was the original OBSedan, after 99 they changed the name to Outback Sedan.

    -mike
  • bigelmbigelm Member Posts: 995
    OBS=Outback Sedan, OBS=Outback Sport, OB=Outback, OBW=Outback Wagon?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    OBSedan = Outback Sedan

    I've only seen a few folks refer to it as that, but some do. Actually, my wife and I do still call the OB sedan an SUS.

    Joybell - welcome back. Please don't let past issues keep you from participating here. We need contrasting opinions, otherwise life will get very boring.

    I enjoyed the giggle. Now, if Pat "Hondafreik" could tell us why we couldn't market the term SUS in Canada, all would be well, no?

    Pat??

    I'll just continue to refer to mine as a 2001 Outback which I think "implies" that it's a wagon ... I guess cause I've just not seen any Outback Sedans on the road ...
    lol

    Patti,

      My 2000 Legacy has a fuel leak. The 16/23 mpg and fuel smell flooding the cabin are not acceptable. I brought the car to the dealer on two occasions, and both times the service manager claimed that they couldn't duplicate the problem. The second time, I got hit for ~$34 for diagnostic fees, for checking both the fuel leak and a misfire on cylinder 1 CEL. The car is still under powertrain warranty.

      As far as I can tell, the leak is occurring above the driver's side cylinder head. I found a short section of fuel hose there was covered with gas tonight.

      Please advise?
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    If so were you on the 48hrs?

    -mike
  • rsgarlatarsgarlata Member Posts: 8
    Yeh, that was my black wagon. In the (relatively) warmer weather of our segment of the 48 hrs, I got some fantastic mileage. Today, with the 13 degree weather, the fuel smell is worse than ever, and the gas gauge dropped like I transplanted a big block.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
    Cool Cool, patti is good she'll take care of you.

    My guess is a leaky fuel injector o-ring or fuel rail possibly. Should have mentioned it to us on the trip, between all of us we would have been able to figure out what was the problem.
