please fill out the purchase survey honestly. The dealers are held accountable to those responses. Also, contact us at Subaru.com or 1-800-SUBARU3. Please tell the Rep. that I'd like to see the case.

I'm sorry things went so poorly.

something. Personally, I can't handle what I'm doing now, so.....

But, if my job changed and I just got to work with customer's, maybe....

Anyway - thinking cap is on. See you all at the chat tonight?

Don't get all stressed over something you cannot control, maybe someday SOC. will waken up. hell they do not even have the equivalent of MY Subaru.com. Almost like they do not want you doing your own maintenance.

      Cheers Pat.

How about, instead of through SoA channels, Edmunds extend an invitation to SoC to join the Crew. They could use SoA's presence in their presentation to entice them.
That would also avoid any perception of SoA meddling in their affairs :)

My involvement came about because of Edmunds and Subaru talking to each other....

Although I feel bad for our northern neighbors, it does serve as a reminder of how very fortunate we are to have an official SOA presence here (AKA Super Patti). I wonder when another manufacturer will get smart and realize the enormous potential for customer goodwill and increased sales that this type of presence represents.

Just in time for my monthly report! I've sent your comments to management. I don't know if anything will come of it, but it won't be because they didn't know there is a need.

A special happy holidays to Patti and thanks for her continued presence and help!

It's a shame that SOC hasn't been active here, as there are a lot of Canadian Subie owners who frequent Edmunds.

Maybe if they were made aware of how successful it has been for SOA, it might change their minds.

Thanks for taking notice, hopefully something will come of it there is a glaring need.

Bob could not agree more, like I said in an earlier post SOC does not even have something as basic as mysubaru.com as is available to SOA customers, seems that SOC is happy to take our money without any sort of appreciation.

Although Patti cannot do anything to directly help up here,it was her committment and participation as well as SOA that sold me on Subaru, Honda lost me as a customer when they dropped the Accord wagon, and I was shopping other makes as well as Subaru.

So it was largely Because of Patti and discovering this crew of course that made me a happy Subaru owner, God knows it was not because of any enticement from SOC.

      Cheers Pat.

Pat- Regardless of the reason, we're happy to count you as a member of the Subaru family!

thank you Frank, what a very nice compliment, but to be honest the pleasure is all mine I find this crew to be like a large extended family.

The trolls are very quickly weeded out and leave to annoy some other forum.

It is rare to see such a level of empathy and caring that is regularly displayed here.

      Cheers Pat.

    Hi Patti,

    In response to: subaru_team Dec 11, 2003 8:32pm

I'm beyond words on my level of frustration. I tried to resolve this on my own by speaking with the General Manager of Rancho Auto Group in San Diego. Unfortunately, there has been very little progress.

I have written all of the details down in a three page letter. Rather than sit on the phone waiting on hold and reading this letter to a Subaru rep is there any way I can send this letter to you (or a rep) for review? You can send me an email address at: edsub.20.stuhall@spamgourmet.com Yes, that email address will work, no need to modify it.

    Thanks!

    Patti and team,

I've self-diagnosed my car based on various discussions here as having piston slap- ie when cold it sounds like a lawnmover for 10-15 minutes until it warms up- What is the "official" method of repair when cold
  • rthompson10rthompson10 Member Posts: 75
PS Its a 2003 with 11k miles on it

of having the dealer check it out to make sure it is the normal characteristic noise. Just to be sure. It has to do with the skirting design of the pistons. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Judging "normal" without hearing it is hard to do.

If the dealer tells you it is the normal noise, maybe send an e-mail to us via the "contact us" portion of Subaru.com. The Rep. can send you a summary of the TSB that explains it in some detail. I refrain from putting the details here because I don't want someone to assume it is normal and low and behold have a problem later. Once the dealer checks it out - they may have the TSB handy to give you the details.

Sorry - I know that this isn't much help.

So is piston slap normal- even in a 2003- I'm taking it into the dealer on Monday.

How far would they go to fix if just this- replace pistons??
  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
This skirting was changed to improve fuel efficiency. It's p0retty detailed. I'll tell you what - I'll summarize the bulletin here next week (when I'm in the office and have it readily available) and that will explain it better. I've had it during warm up in my 2K3 and 2K4. I know that we have some long term testing with vehicles with these pistons and we haven't seen any extraordinary wear as a result - but have the dealer take a listen. If they want to keep it overnight to start it cold in the AM, they should be able to provide you with a rental. Explain the situation to them. If they are concerned about getting paid for the rental, have them call into us. Tell them "Patti sent you".

    Thanks!

Does Subaru ever send you out to visit the dealers? If so, I hope Houston is very near the top of the list of future visits.
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Forget it LD, I bet you just want to kidnap Patti and keep her all to yourself! No way the crew would ever let that happen! :-)

We can have a "H-town crew get together"!!
  • subarusaleshousubarusaleshou Member Posts: 161
just borrowing for a day or however long she can stay. And letting SoA know how great it is they do this. I don't think manufacturers realize how big a thing this is or there would be other brands doing the same thing.
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
Do you know if SIA has plant tours? I think it would be great to have a group meeting there along with a tour. Perhaps the fence sitters can pick-up their newly purchased turbo Outback/Legacy at the factory!

I had a brother in law who worked for a different company. He took me through the plant once. We walked approx. 2.5 miles following the line and that only covered about 80% of it. Part of it we couldn't go to. It was extremely interesting. I'd love to get to do the same at the Subaru plant. I want to go follow an STi through it's plant too.
  • jfljfl Member Posts: 1,399
that would mean a trip to Japan! I'd need kens for a guide and interpreter.

Personally I would LOVE for you guys to come tour the plant in Indiana since I only live about 100 miles or so from it !!!
  • subarusaleshousubarusaleshou Member Posts: 161
YES! Maybe one of these decades after the girls are out of college. Shoot, while I'm wishing and dreaming I'll just make it that I go walk along the line as my WRB STi is built and then tour Japan while it's on the ship to here.

Non Subaru related but I took a tour of the VW factory in Wolfsburg, Germany back in Nov. '95 when I picked up my '96 Jetta GLI under the european delivery program. Also toured the MB factories in Sindelfingen and Emden. No tours of the Porsche factory allowed but did visit the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. Was going to visit BMW in Munich but it was a holiday (All Saint's Day) when we drove through. All tours were quite interesting.

Drove the Jetta through 9 countries in 12 days (2200 miles). Top speed (that I drove) with the 1.8L 102HP 4 cyl was about 120mph (legally) on the German Autobahn.

The trip was an memorable experience. I'd like to do it again sometime.

Hey, I'd be in for a Japan plant tour. I'll even double as the Crew's official interpreter.

What a cool trip that would be! I'd also love to talk to some of the engineers that have designed our vehicles.

When I was in 8th grade, I was in the "automotive club" in school. We took a field trip to the General Motors assembly plant in Linden, NJ, and they gave us a tour of the plant. I remember watching vehicles go through every phase of production. It was fascinating to me at that time (circa 1969-1970). I think it would be even more interesting to tour an automaker's assembly plant now. Sign me up for Ken's guided tour of the Subaru plant!

Just noticed that I was 10 years off in my factory tour date. I took the tours in Nov. '85 when I picked up my '86 VW Jetta GLI.

    Patti,

Didn't read your last post on this until today. Of course everything went wrong. When I call the dealer and asked about loaner cars they said, "sure". When I get there( Flemington, Nj -recommended on the other service thread) they tell me that loaners are only for major work and mine was a diagnose only so they would rent me one- didn't feel like it at that point. Given that I had driven there in the morning(a considerable distance) they couldn't hearanything then. I'm just going to drop it at the
    local dealer the night before.
     thanks for the input

Rep. know I'd like to see the case. Also, can you please ask the Service Manager (Diane) to give me a call?

    Thanks!

  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
Yup - they do offer tours of the plant. Maybe we can get something together? I can see if our travel agency of choice (Rosenbluth) can put together a package deal (if you're serious). Please post if you are interested and what month works best for you. I can see if the agency can put something together with discounted air fares and hotel accomodations? It would be a blast! I might be able to join you if it's after March. I don't know - I'm kind of thinking out loud here - can you tell?

It would be a fun way for us to get together! Who's in?

(way off topic): Ken, just read your post - great! I love mine too.
  • ladywclassladywclass Member Posts: 1,713
count me in .. although I won't need air fare ... I could "probably" talk the b/f into coming with me and staying in the hotel overnight .. and as he works in an 'automotive-related industry' maybe he could count it as 'work related expense' .. lmao ... (he is a piston inspector ... )
  • fibber2fibber2 Member Posts: 3,786
I too would love a field trip!

I do semiconductor line and equipment audits from time to time, but never seen an auto plant.

The best line tour I was ever on was at the Boeing plant for twin aisle aircraft (747, 767 & 777) up north of Seattle. I was ready to take delivery, but couldn't get my credit union to pony up the $75M for one of those babies....

I say we drive and stay at Brenda's. ;-)

Seriously, for people within a reasonable driving distance I'd think it would make a nice road trip to SIA. It's 650 miles from Baltimore and 700 miles from Philly.
