Subaru is going with whatever info they could obtain. It's not like they were there.
If the check-engine light didn't go off, there wouldn't be any codes to check. ABS would not trigger a check-engine light anyway.
Also, I would not call it textbook failure because the norm is for the braking power to be restored if you pump the pedal once, which is not the case with your wife's accident.
Plus, there must be *some* braking before the ABS ever engages, otherwise the test the police conducted would have shown complete brake failure.
I wasn't there, but I'm not convinced her case was textbook, not by a long shot...

I had a similar experience with my wife's 03 OBW, where twice in 5 minutes I had difficulty stopping the car. No matter how hard I pressed the pedal, that car did not want to stop.
The roads were clear, and ABS did not engage. Initial thought, something was frozen, where there have been many sub-zero mornings. The dealer could not find anything wrong.
I would bleed the system anyway, moisture in the lines could freeze up.

Is the recall new? I have the VIN registered at mysubaru.com, and no recalls came up there, or at the dealer.
I recommended that the dealer flush the brake lines per one of your earlier posts, but they weren't very open to that.
Basically, I was told to bring it back if it happened again.

I posted this on the Problems & Solutions board, but I didn't know if you would see it.
You're correct; I don't have Added Security. I don't think that was around in '97, just the garden variety extended warranty, and every Subaru owner I talked to, and there were many, talked me out of that. The dealer's name is Neil Huffman Subaru, Louisville, KY., and I've really been happy with their service. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Some negative effects are lowered boiling point which means reduced braking, corroded components and last but not least if there is enough moisture it can freeze.
Cheers Pat.
Wouldn't gyroscopic means it spins? ;-)
Looks like you fat fingered it Pat. Now say it with me: "The h is to the right of the g."

Believe it or not I make the same mistake every time I mention brake fluid you would think I would learn by now.
Cheers Pat.
heard from you . I have been away for the last week so
If you tried to contact me I'm sorry I have'nt got
back to you .
I was able to get a file # on my head gasket case.
The lady I taked to was barb but you probable have
more then 1 person there with that name .The # is
578498. Hope this helps .
I also have a case # for my piston slap issue . The #
is 364809. I feel I am getting the run around from the
dealer . He says that yes the noise is there even
after the car reaches operating temps . I have read on
Edmunds and other boards that owners have had no
problems having this problem corrected . I am kinda at
my wits end ,and would greatly appreciate any
suggestions you may have .
Thanks again

Crazy few days, so sorry if other folks are waiting for me. I'm still trying to get an answer on shims vs. other design in our current engine. I didn't forget - just no time to follow-up yet on the person I sent the question to.

Just do not spread yourself too thin.

<sarcasm>Good of my Subaru techs to check them, just in case.</sarcasm>
TECHS: 0, FORUM MEMBERS: 1.
Pretty sad that a guy who's not even in the same state as my car can diagnose it better than a guy who can get under the hood.

It seems I'm not the only one having the sealer added for the head gasket leak . So far so good with the sealer .I just came back from a week of skiing with the average temp in the single digits. I have not noticed any more signs of leaking . I am more concerned about my piston slap . It is so loud and it seems to be there all the time now .

Good for you, Robert.

The 2004 Forester still has no online manual, the pictures come up as an X, and some of the stuff that used to be there for scheduled maintenance has disappeard.
I really like to use the site to keep my maint. info on for both my 04 XT and the wife's 03 OBW.
Just worried that if they put a big enough "fix" in for the 04 section my maint records will disappear.
Guess I better follow juice's example and print out a hard copy.
Thanks much

So bottom line: You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make them drink.... I thank you for your efforts - now it is up to him to avail himself of the interim solution.
Steve
Thanks!

P. S. - Sorry I didn't post a response sooner - dang family needed my attention. Sheesh - you might think they didn't see me all day. Maggie is the worst of them. She will not let me hug my other children or husband until she gets her requisite scratch behind the ears. She actually growls at the rest of her family!

You've got that right! I don't think I've heard that before. We sure treat them like they are. ;-)
