That's an option, but isn't really my taste. :)

The cancer I'm alluding to is the felonies that are committed using those stolen WRXes. The pattern is no longer just stolen, but becoming a favored get away car.

Well, if they chose Chevy Aveos they'd get caught more often!

I'm not going to describe how, but the STi's immoblizer is in fact easily bypassed. The frameless windows are a large security vulnerability on all Subarus.

  • tsytsy Member Posts: 1,551
I was wondering about that. Why does Subaru use frameless windows? I can't think of another car today that does the same.

Okay - well, the 3K service has pretty much been eliminated as a recommended interval (except for the turbo models I think) but you should have the 7500 svc. Can you call in so I can check it Craig?

Bookem' - can you post some info. (name, selling dealer) etc. and I can check for you?

    Thanks!

there's not much we (SOA) can do. For years Subaru's were one of the least stolen. I think the more performance the higher the attraction. The "Immobilzer" might help, but it won't be the be all to end all. There's ways to defeat even those systems I'm sure.

I think if we get tougher with the laws it might help, but...

Also, I think that the Evo and other high performance cars are having similar issues. It just seems that the Subaru community is so much better at communicating with each other that we are hearing more about them.

I hope it stops - and soon!

yep, the Evo's immobilizer works exactly the same as the STi. neither of them will stop a professional thief. carjack will increase the odds of recovery because thieves often dump cars for a few days after grabbing what they can pull out quickly and then waiting to see if it is recovered.

aftermarket security with a locking hood, battery backup for the alarm system, and paging capability will help but absolutely nothing will stop a dedicated thief except preventing anyone to ever have unrestricted, unattended access to it. to those that must park outdoors in public or in unsecure mass garages, I'm sorry but the best solution tends to be avoiding the cars that thieves go for. certain model years of Honda Accords are still very high on the theft list!

there's really nothing in general Subaru or any other manufacturer can do to prevent this, but they might be able to learn about common exploits and take measures against them in future models. bending the frameless glass is all too easy though.

    Patti,

FYI, there is no 3K service interval for the turbo models either.

My Legacy GT service interval also begins at 7.5K.

Frameless doors are lighter and the pillars can be very thin for good visibility.

I happen to love them. In fact spy pics of the upcoming Tribeca show it might not have them and to me that was a negative.

Dave: good news is there is a fix.

It's very high-tech, safe, secure, proven, and even fun.

    It's called Forester. ;-)

    I wholeheartedly concur!!! :-D

Time will tell whether the Subaru upgrades will help. It's an definitely an improvement though. Patti you have to read Chillibop's story on nabisco's Tri-State forum. Simply unbelievable!

According to the C&D review of the OB XT, the frameless door design allows you to allocate the missing doorframe and metal into the main structure, making it stronger and more enegry absorbant. If that frame and material were part of the doors (in the same location) it would not contribute to the car's overall structure much, if at all. In the end, the frameless design would have more structural integrity with less material than a framed design.

Ahh, thanks for the responses. I was just curious. It kinda reminds me of some of the cars we had in the 70s- it's that warm fuzzy feeling of nostalgia. ;-)

If somebody wants to steal your car- they will. There's not much to stop a determined thief today.
Not alarms, immobilizers, clubs. They're pretty smart. The immobilizers will cut down on the kids stealing your car for a joyride though.

You could always justleave a pitbull in your car. ;-)

The Lexus ES series has had that since the mid 90s
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Frameless doors aren't an issue at all. We've developed a system to take that out of the theft equation. I spoke to SOA about the problem and how they could fix it. Apparently they needed to look into legal to see if that fix could be implemented. I guess it didn't pass legal department....

As for other items. Well you can check my page for what we've been doing to help secure cars here in the tristate. 3 independent items to secure the car. And so far? It's working. We've had at least 5 people call up saying that the systems prevented a theft. :)

Actually, I had shared your idea with Product Planning. The issue relates to "changes" from original specs. Believe it or not, something as minor (and well thought out) as the change you had suggested would require us to re-crash test any vehicles that have the proposed change. Placement of the components (where they would impact the interior cabin in a frontal crash) could be an issue. That seems to be the rub with a lot of suggestions. Even the "climate control" improvement!

That's not to say it ideas like yours wouldn't be implimented in future models! We'll have to wait and see.

Have a wonderful Wednesday folks! I'm hoping I can get into the chat this week, so I'll see y'all there.

    Hi Patti,

I'm a new member to this forum. I purchased a 2004 Outback Wagon in June and so far am loving it. Are the maintenance coupons available for anyone? If so, I would like to get one. Thanks - Joe
  • dcm61dcm61 Member Posts: 1,567
    Joe,

The coupon offer only applies to 2005 Legacy and Outback models.

    DaveM
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Well hopefully in future models (that they have to crash-test anyway) they can implement them. :)

If we come up with anymore bright ideas on security we'll let you know. The shop has become quite the brainstorming session anytime we do a security install so we've been collecting some good ideas for you.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to get my maintenance on the 04 the old fashioned way...payment in full. Thanks DaveM.

    Patti-
Can these feature in select models be migrated to the earlier models as an upgrade?

    -Dave
  • bluesubiebluesubie Member Posts: 3,497
Did you see that story on nabisco? The immobilizer doesn't work when the thief demands the keys from you. :-(

    -Dennis
  • hypovhypov Member Posts: 3,068
Ya, I've read that, but it would add at least another layer of PITA.

As for being confronted to give up the car, I'll do it in a heartbeat, and then run like a bat out of hell the other way.

in my mazda millenia. as 2 of his workers tried to open each of the front doors ( they were locked ), he stood straight armed with his gun down by his leg 2 inches from the hood. being that close i bet that i could punch it quicker than he could raise his gun. the big old facial grease mark on my windshield and seeing his body flip over the roof is still a highlight of my life.

i dont recommend what i did, i just reacted.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Joe: nope, get a Chase Subaru card and use the Subaru bucks to pay for service.

Our dealer let us put $2000 down on the last car we bought on a credit card, that right there would be $60, enough for 3 oil changes.

Wild, swampy. I'd get out and give him the car, though. Gotta think about the kids and stuff. You can replace the car. It's actually a good excuse to fall off The Fence!

I would have no problem doing the same thing in that situation. If somebody tries to carjack a running vehicle with a clear escape path, they are nuts (when you are blocked in it's a different story).

Heck, if I had a big old beater, I'd be tempted to turn around and make another pass... :-)

my heart was beating so hard, my mind tripping and being very late at night i dont believe i came to a complete stop at any of the traffic lights until i made it home.

the manufacturer, we have too many restrictions (i.e. - we'd still have to crash test), but that doesn't mean that folks can't DIY if they can handle that type of work. And then, there's the folks like Mike.........

And we are working on a 4th stage of protection for this Fall/Winter :)

is it something like in that james bond flick where the guy uses the butt end of his gun to smash the window to gain entry into james bonds car and the car blows up killing both bad guys?

This is a good line of conversation between Mike (paisan) and Patti - just goes to show what a small, customer-minded company like Subaru and a group of dedicated enthusiast/vendors can do. Maybe nothing will come of it but the fact it can happen speaks volumes.

BTW, I have one maintenance coupon for a prospective '05 Legacy or Outback owner. First person to send me a PM either at nabisco or subaruforester.com (Hosts - note no links, so please let stay) with mailing info can have it. My screen name is lark6 at both fora as well - I'm getting old and can't remember too many user ID/passwords, plus nothing to hide.

Pity I couldn't use that coupon for my '05 Forester.

measure the impact on sales. We did something similar in the western area of the country only last month. It was for all models (I think two or three years old - if I recall properly) and it went over well. Now they are testing out across the country, but with just the Impreza models to see how it goes. I imagine that they will try the guaranteed trade on other models down the road. So, it's just a test, only a test - - for now.

    Have a great holiday!

FWIW, my dealer offered us a guaranteed trade-in value on our 2002 Legacy L in a mailer. It might be regional vs. for certain models only.

sounds like a plan by SOA to prop-up sagging resale values. not a bad one, either, but costly.

  • rob_mrob_m Member Posts: 820
I think I saw a commercial for 2.9% financing on 2005 Subaru models over the weekend.
  • locke2clocke2c Member Posts: 5,038
well that sure doesn't help resale! why are two seemingly opposing campaigns going on at the same time?

    ~c
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
If you look, 2005s are priced a whole bunch higher than the outgoing 2004s, even the models that are mostly unchanged.

Prices may have increased slightly, but big incentives disappeared. Factor those in and people are finding 2004s for $3000 less than 2005s.

I need to send a complaint e-mail to Subaru. What is their e-mail address?

    Thanks and regards,
