If your vehicle is in good shape, mechanically sound you will get more for a private sale. If you don't want the hassle trying to sell it Trading in will net you a lot less depending on make , model, etc.

What I would do is round up the 3 or 4 best dealer prices on new vehicle via emails and phone calls closest to your house then drive your car to each one making who ever gives you a fair deal on the trade.

Do not mention trade until you get into each dealership. Tell each dealer you decided to trade this vehicle in. Check online prices so you have a ball park figure on your vehicles value.

    good luck

One other note about selling privately versus trading it in is the potential tax credit. If your new car is $25K and your trade in is worth $5K, you only pay sales tax on the $20K difference.

Head over to the "Real World Trade in Values" discussion for an honest appraisal of your trade in ... dealers are known for low-balling the value.

Hey Brian125, me again. We waited to buy/lease until December and it seems to have paid off.

We now have an offer of $23,400 + $149 doc fee on a 2014 CR-V EX on the table for a lease. I know there is $750 in dealer cash from Honda out there and am not sure if this has been factored into that price. Here's the kicker. This price is what the car would cost if we were to trade in our 2012 Civic Si. The payments are way high because they're tacking on about $3-4k in negative equity on top of the purchase price. We have not yet discussed leasing clean without a trade yet. It's a long story but we were considering purchasing used before the deal went south with the trade disappointment, so now we're looking at new again.

I have been working with a salesman there for a couple weeks, as well as a couple other dealers. This dealer is the only one that has an EX that I would actually want (Black). I don't see how I couldn't get a better deal starting over without a trade, but would like to know your thoughts. If I go back in, I know I would need to know acquisition fee, money factor and residual.

Do you have any other thoughts? Is this a good price as is or should I push farther?

Also, about that dealer cash. I have NOT brought that up during negotiations. Is that something I would ask them to add to my down payment at signing like you mentioned above with the student cash? How do you make that happen if they say "we already included that in your deal"?

First off what model CRV, ................ FWD or AWD makes a difference in pricing.

I'm sure dealer included the cash incentive to get to that price.

You have a good deal on the table but might be alot better if you play your cards right. Take a chance tell this dealer unless you could lower the price another 500 dollars you are considering buying from x dealership that has a exl model which is being discounted 600 more than there price. Make sure you name the closest dealership to them.. Then leave your number and wait a week to see if dealer changes there mind. By waiting to the last days of this month is when you will have the most buying leverage with many dealerships. On the 11th of Dec, not so much.

Hey Brian, so here's my deal:

First off, AWD model EX (sorry forgot to mention)...I just take AWD for granted since it's all I look at :)

Got them to drop another $400 to $23,000 sales price incl. dest.
    $149 doc fee
    $599 acquisition
$299 VIN Etch (not thrilled that they wouldn't budge over this but whatever)
$270 reg./tax/tag (will get most of this back when we sell our Civic since we just registered)
    2 free oil changes/tire rots.
    Accessories at dealer cost

Payments on 12k/36 mo. lease came to $252, which is $30/mo. better than October's pricing so I'm cool with that.

Other dealers in the area would not touch that price, and EXL selection in my area is not great. Also, this was the last black EX within 50 miles. Had I not started with the trade yesterday, I might have been able to get them down another $200-$300. But I'm satisfied. I'm sure they do this to everyone, but they said I have a job there if I ever leave the one I have. Not sure if I'm flattered or not.

I dealt with Lucky Fazliu at Lujacks in Davenport. I REALLY like the guy - he is great to work with.

Could someone please tell me how much under invoice I could expect to get a 2014 CRV at this point. I would prefer the 2014 CRV EX or EXL but it would have to be AWD ( haven't even seen a fwd here). There are many EXL's left here on Long Island (more than EX, or LX). I would love to get the deal gone before xmas but would wait if it were to my advantage. Also I would be trading a 2007 Odyssey EXL with 73,000

2014 model should be between 2k to 3000 below invoice price.

Your Odyssey trade in between 7k to 9k. Private sale you will get more

    Brian,
What are your thoughts...found a slightly preowned 2014 exl awd with 2,500 miles on it for 24,700. We are now considering this preowned vs new 2015 ex.(no leather). As far as resale value goes the 15 will always be more but an "exl" is more than an "ex" going to make the deal tomorrow

    @jrw118,

2014 CRV, EXL, awd.................... Invoice price = 27,335

Take your time don't rush this deal. Work the numbers on both years maybe take a day to think about it after collecting all the info.

2635 below dealers invoice price on the 2014 opposed to a 2015 model at what price.? you should be able to go lower on the 2014...... Its a used vehicle ( pre-owned) and not a new one. This could work in your favor pricewise. If you plan on keeping the 2014 model 6 or more years I would consider the price difference between model years.

Don't forget the 2015 has been refreshed you may like that look better..

Below is only hypotheticals, nothing more at this point. Just something to think about with a 2014 MODEL.

In the event of a Totaled or Stolen vehicle with your 2014 model after Jan,1st, 2015.

How much has that model depreciated on a 1yr old CRV with 2500 miles or more.?

Does your below invoice price on the 2014 model offset the loss?

Is your Ins. deductible 500 or 1000 dollars. That deduct. amount gets taken off the top of the vehicles price value if vehicle is stolen or totaled.

I would want 3000 dollars below dealers invoice at the minimum on the 2014, Used Crv vehicle for me to consider buying it this month. But that's just me.

If I'm buying a 2015 model there are some area's selling CRV's at 1k below dealers invoice. That now does seem attractive also.

Hope I confused you enough to think about it. .....................lol

You may find getting close to 500 below dealers invoice price kind of hard in the NY/ NJ area's. Buying closer to the end of the month will give you the best pricing opportunities with dealerships.
Remember every state could bear different pricing.

The dealerships in MA are at 1k below as are MD, VA. right now.

    good luck................................ keep us posted

Where do you find the actual invoice price. On edmunds it lists the 2014 exl awd price as $28214, but you say it's $27335? What is the invoice on the 2015 ex? I am in talks with multiple dealerships but they are very pushy about getting into the dealership. I am supposed to got to 2 dealerships on Sunday afternoon. Any suggestions? Should I also involve more dealerships at this point?

You have to add in the $880 destination fee; $27,334 + $880 gets you to $28,214.

For a 2015 EX AWD you're looking at $28,214 invoice plus $800 destination for a total of $28,355.

It gets a bit confusing and you have to pay attention to the numbers at the dealership. Sometimes that "little" destination fee gets added on at the end and messes up your out the door number.

It gets irritating but ignore the pushiness or just tell them to lay off. It's your money so if they push too hard, just walk out. Make sure you hang on to your keys and don't park where you can get blocked in. B)

i got quoted for 19700 on 2014 crv lx awd. This seems like too good to be true.

I read a bunch of posts here and i assuming this is the price without the destination cost. Im in the mid west btw.

any kind of response is appreciated. im a noob at this.

    Thanks,

You can email and ask them for the total "out the door" cost with the taxes and fees listed - if you'd like an excuse to email, you can tell them you need to know the final number with taxes and everything else to know if you can "afford" it. If they call and tell you the fees verbally, either ask for the numbers by email or take good notes and then send them a confirmation email saying, "let me know if I got the numbers wrong or missed something."

This is what i got from him

    $19700-vehicle price
    $790-destination fee
    $166.27 doc fee
8.25%-sales tax so about 1700 (not sure if this is taken from vehicle price or vehicle+destination price)
    $196-new licence plate

    so about 22.5 otd

Would i be able to get dealers closer to match this price?

    Thanks for the help stever

This may be your first rodeo but that sounds like a killer deal to me. TMV is $23,333 for Madison WI and that's before taxes and fees. Most of us buy cars every 5 or 7 years, so compared to salespeople who do it every day, we're all noobs.

Destination is "officially" $880; not sure where the $790 is coming from. So your "vehicle price" is really $20,490 plus fees. That's $3,000 below invoice with destination, before fees and taxes. That sounds good to me. @Brian125 better check my math lol.

The year is winding down, 2015s are selling well, and some dealers may be getting better incentives or bonuses from Honda to move cars. It's hard to say if a local dealer can beat that price but it's worth asking.

For local dealers it helps if you have an email or something in writing to show them. Even without that, you can email them and say you are ready to buy and invite them to meet the price XYZ dealer has given you since you'd prefer to buy local.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
@newname, didn't mean to overlook you (anyone else we missed, please repost).

A quick glance shows that you're around $2,200 below invoice. Throw in your additional negotiations and the gift card and you're $3,000+ under invoice too.

These deals make me want to spend my own money....

    Congrats!

Ok I have some numbers... 2014 exl crv
    $25,995
    Plus taxes and dmv.
Waiting on the final numbers. If this is legit do you think there is any more room for a decrease? I would like to be at $25,000 with a remote start. What do you think my next step would be of that is the goal? Do you think it is even feasible? Thank you for your help
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
There could be a mad rush at year end to push the rest of the 2014's out the door, with some more price cutting.

But check the inventory in your area; they could run out of cars. Or the dealers near you could "make quota" and decide to go no lower.

(Note that "year end" can vary from one manufacturer to another. I think Honda sticks to the calendar but I don't know for sure. I got a new Nissan on New Year's Eve in 1999 and found out a couple of weeks later that the year end for dealer bonus purposes was January 4th, 2000.)

If anyone is interested, I just got a quote (over the phone) from Brown's Honda of Arlington, VA for $22,500 OTD for the 2014 LX AWD. He was driving and left me a voicemail so I didn't get the breakdown from him (yet).

I still think the prices will get lower in the next 2 weeks, but that's a good starting figure to keep in mind and try to trim down a bit. Oh, I am in VA so it is VA sales tax rate.

Could someone with better experience than myself please be kind enough to answer these three questions:

1.) What price should I start at when beginning to negotiate with a salesman???
I've been trying $1,000 below invoice, but he just tells me thats unrealistic and its a conversation killer.

2.) Salesmen want me to leave $50 to reserve or hold the car after I "negotiate" with them. I realize I will never get that $50 back if I dont buy. What is a nice way to say NO?

3.) During negotiations I tell them that I do NOT want any dealer badge or logo placed on my car I buy. I do not want to be a driving billboard advertising their dealership. One salesman told me that it will be an extra $300 if I choose not to have the dealer logo on my car. What come-back should I say. I know this is BS.

For reference I am looking at a 2014 CR-V EX 2WD in zip code 60201

P.S. I'm too polite and an easy pushover. Appreciate any help/advice. I need it :)

@rlap, do you have any friends who would be willing to go to the dealer with you? (sometimes called a "first basement" in the biz) That person would be disinterested and would provide another set of ears. Bonus points if they are a bit rude. :)

To your questions, don't offer a price, ask the dealer for a quote. Then you can say yikes, that's a lot higher than I was expecting - people on Edmunds are getting the same car for $xx,xxx (or TMV is $xx,xxx, or Kelley or TrueCar says it's worth $xx,xxx etc.)

Second, simply say no thank you to any deposit, refundable or otherwise. If they insist, thank them for their time and leave. That's a ruse to take you out of the market so you won't shop their quote or shop other dealers period.

Your third point is understandable but tougher. You have to find a car on the lot without a sticker and make it a part of the deal. And if they slap the sticker on the car anyway, you have to leave (you'd do a last minute inspection before paying and again after paying but before driving off the lot). If they say it's an extra $300, say that's a deal killer and walk. I've heard that removing some of those stickers can harm the paint, so if they offer to remove it, check the paint in good light before agreeing to drive off in the car.

Here's another way to do it. Solicit quotes, either from our quote service or from the dealer's website. Screen your calls and do everything by email. If the dealer asks you to come down, say no thank you and move on to the next dealer.

If you have easy access to a fax machine, you can use it instead of emailing. Some dealers react to faxes differently, thinking you really are ready to buy today. We also have Price Promise certificates that should save a lot of hassle if there's a participating dealer in your area. I don't know if Costco works with Honda, but a buying service like that may work out for you too. Car brokers are pretty rare these days but you may want to ask around and try to find one.

The most important thing to remember is that it's your money, and if you aren't comfortable with any part of the deal, you can decline to write a check. Dealers have heard it all and they lose sales all the time. You won't be hurting anyone's feelings by sticking to your guns.

Worse comes to worse, research the Rogue or Mazda CX-5 or Cherokee or Forester. And casually drop that info into any conversation with the Honda dealers if you like. B)

Yep. The 2015 is quite different (some claim it to be a big upgrade, but I really don't have good feel for the CVT...) and is widely available now, so they got to clear out what's remain of the 2014. Plus, this is the lowest trim.

Price $25,395 + $75 doc fee, dmv, + tax + remote starter. The dealer also was highly competitive on my trade (2007 odyssey exl) giving me $10k
price was $17,317 OTD after trade. I also got the .9% financing from honda.

I looooove this website and forum! Thanks everyone for your posts. It helped me so much and deciding on SUV's. This is what I got in Texas.
(I negotiated with several dealerships asking for 26k out the door--thanks to a post i had read that got 26500, the maximum I was willing to pay was 27500 out the door) I looked into 2015 Honda CRV EX-L, and Jeep Grand Cherokee/Cherokee. This is what I decided on that was best for me, after countless researching.

2014 Honda CRV-EX-L (stated no color preference, ended up with urban titanium)
    27,158.60 OTD
qualified for .9 financing with Honda Financial (not available for 2015 model!)

This is how they broke it down:
    sales price: 25,223.38
    tax: 1576.46

So happy with my purchase! I almost gave up on getting what I wanted for the price I wanted but I stayed patient--STAY STRONG EVERYONE!!

Dealer is banging you over the head with there high priced accessories on this 2014 model. If you cant get another 1k off this deal walk away from this vehicle. Its not worth paying 1500 below dealers invoice going into the new year next week.

Your target price should be close to 2500 below dealers invoice plus some this week on any 2014 model. If stock is limited and dealers wont budge it pays to buy a 2015 model.

This SUV will be sold to a sucker buyer at that price..................... Don't let it be you.

Can I ask where/what dealer you got this price on the 2014 LX 2wd?

I am from Illinois as well and am have NO luck at all.

Are you talking about the 22900 otd? It was a bogus offer that they tried to pass off on the phone. I called back to make sure and they said they couldnt do it at that price. smh

Im looking at awd right now, but i havent found any luck getting it 2500 below invoice. I guess my negotiation skills suck. lol

I misread that it was a bogus offer.
I bet your negotiation skills are better than mine. You should see my results!

Good luck. Please tell us if you do purchase, what deal you get. I geographically near by and am interested.

I have emailed most dealerships within 3 hours driving around me, Only FOUR have written back with an offer. Silly offers for 2014's that are not worth it with 2015 a week away!
Others either dont write back, or say come in check out our selection.

One of the four I had written gave me a good OTD offer for a 2014 LX 2wd $22600. I told them I will drive down with a check in hand tonight if you email me back the VIN# and a detailed break-down, fees, tax, addons, title/registration etc...
They emailed me back that there was a miscommunication the actual price was $1,500 more.

Only good offer I got in person was for a 2015 EX AWD, 24120 + 880 delivery + 166.27 DOC fee. But then after the price they did add-ons for wheel locks and other plastic molding?? and the offer rose by 600 something. And of course then TTL. Also color was ugly.

Can I ask you smarter negotiators.
Are Title and Registration taxable? They included the Title and Registration before tax.
My understanding is that Title/new registration comes after the tax is calculated, as this goes to the state???

You can negotiate title and registration (and taxes) in the sense that you can make an out the door offer, and make it clear to the dealer that you will write a check just for the out the door number.

Not sure about the taxes, and it probably varies from state to state.

The other thing you can do is regroup and go test drive an Escape or Rogue or CX-5 (or just get quotes). Then compare numbers and let the Honda dealer know that you are shopping other makes since they aren't competitive.

Here is a quote I got from a dealer in Northern Virginia for 2014 CRV EXL 2WD.

    Sale Price: $22,775
    Destination Charge: $830
    Processing fee: $585
Appearance package (wheel locks and mudguards): $385
    Taxes (4.25%): $1044.44
    Tags: $113.50
    Total OTD price: $25,733

For comparison, here are the known costs for this trim:
    Invoice price: $27,251
    Destination charge: $830
    Holdback: $836
"True cost" for dealer (invoice_price + destination - holdback): $27,245

It seems like I'm getting quoted $2670 below dealer's "true cost". I tried asking to lower the price further, but they wouldn't budge. Is this a good deal or should I keep trying?

looking at a 2014 EX-L in polished metal metallic
the edmunds price promise is 25,485, which is 3,040 off the msrp of 28,525. my question is with the taxes and registration after, how much wiggle room do i have? the true car locked in price OTD is 27,306.

@achilles76 and @as300, both of those sound like strong quotes to me. About the only thing I could suggest is to shop the quotes at another dealer or two.
