What should my response be when I tell a dealer to beat the price a competing dealer is offering.
They ask me to name the dealership offering the price.

I don't want to basically show all my cards and give them the name of the dealership I got the price from. But it is a genuine price quote I got.

    What should I respond with??
  • truckie4lifetruckie4life Member Posts: 56
I chose to print a copy of the email, scan it in, and email it back to myself. Then I edited it and blacked out all the identifying info of the other dealer. Finally, I saved it and it was able to be emailed to whoever wanted to see the quote.

I left certain identifiers in the email such as "xxx@xxxhonda.com", so they could see it was legit. If you're a little computer savvy it won't take you long. That's what I chose to do and it worked well.

If you don't pit one dealer against the next the dealers on the fence will not meet that better price.

This is done on the day you are buying vehicle

Example : Hey Mikes Honda I will buy from you today said model for xx below dealers invoice . This price includes the dest/ charge. Do you want this sale today?

I have several offers at dealership near, or far, but want to buy local, or from your dealership, or I'm looking for the best price and I will buy today. This is the wording you use negotiating. I would only show your email to dealers if that is the price you want to pay and your ready to buy that day. This is your leverage..... Telling dealerships meet / beat my price I buy from your dealership right NOW.

@truckie4life has a very good idea with rescanning emails. If you know how to change the font size you could put a better price down.

    Hi Brian,

Thanks so much for all of the answers to the questions posted here. It's very helpful to read the information shared by all.

I'm now looking for a 2014 CRV LX FWD, in Houston, TX. Here's the offer I got today.
    Price: ~$20,500
    Dealer-installed Accessories: $411 (nitrogen tire $99, tinted windows $312)
    Tax (6.25%): $1,373
    DMV expenses: ~ $100-$150
    OTD: $22,500

    Is this a good price?

Also, the dealer insisted (and produced a printout to show me) that the invoice price is $22,697 (= $21,717 + destination $830 + advertising $150). I thought $21,717 is the invoice price that already includes destination fee. Was the dealer trying to cheat on me?

    Any suggestion/advice is much appreciated!

$ 21,717 is the invoice price on a 2014 Lx fwd model. The new destination charge is 830. Unfortunately your area is charging a advertising fee of 150 dollars .

Try to negotiate a lower sale price on this 2014 model. Next week is 2015 and this vehicle is now considered a 1 year old model and has depreciated even more.

Tinted windows are 100 bucks and the nitrogen in tires cost the dealer nothing. Don't be fooled thinking your getting any deal there.

email 10 dealers for a price on the 2015 model lx fwd. Then compare pricing. It may pay to buy a 2015 model. I would wait till the 31st and see if you could squeeze this dealer on the 2014 model another 1000 dollars. On that day call dealer and say for 19,500 which includes the destination charge you will come down and buy vehicle. You have nothing to lose. And all to gain.

    good luck

    Please Re-post

You provided no details on your sale or the year purchased except a OTD price. This helps nobody. Breakdown your deal so other member can figure out how you did/ want to call or visit this dealership.

    year of model / dealership
    agreed sale price
    dealers doc fee charge
    added accessories
    sales tax
    dmv charges
any other dealer charges that totals your otd price

    Congrats on your new purchase

    Hi Brian,
Can you please look at my previous post in this page above and comment on it? I have been trying to pit the dealers against one another, but the best I could do so far is just a $100 less (in the out-the-door price) than my quote mentioned above.

Here is a quote I got from a dealer in Northern Virginia for 2014 CRV EXL 2WD.

    Sale Price: $22,775
    Destination Charge: $830
    Processing fee: $585
Appearance package (wheel locks and mudguards): $385
    Taxes (4.25%): $1044.44
    Tags: $113.50
    Total OTD price: $25,733

For comparison, here are the known costs for this trim:
    Invoice price: $27,251
    Destination charge: $830
    Holdback: $836
"True cost" for dealer (invoice_price + destination - holdback): $27,245

It seems like I'm getting quoted $2670 below dealer's "true cost". I tried asking to lower the price further, but they wouldn't budge. Is this a good deal or should I keep trying?

Invoice price on the exl, fwd model = 26,164. Old destination charge is 830. The 2015 models destination has increased to 880 dollars .

looking at your deal lets break it down to see how it looks.

Invoice on the EXL model 26,164 plus 830 =................... 26,994

    Dealer price w dest/ charge =.............................................23,605

total....................................................................................- 3389 below dealers invoice price

    Minus dealers doc fee/ ...................................................... - 585

    Total.......................................................................................2800 below dealers invoice price.

Your at the top end of a excellent price on a 2014 model. This is where you want to be on a almost 1 yr old CRV model. There may be room for a couple more hundred. keep on negotiating till months end.

One note;..... if dealer is only giving you wheel locks, and Mudguards in the App. pck. That 385 dollar option really cost the dealer 100 dollars at best. .

I Re- Edited my numbers on this post......................... please re- read .

    Good luck

    hi brian,

How does hold back play a role in the price?

the best quote i got for 2014 crv lx awd was

    sale price 21600
    tax of .7%
    doc fee 166
    new plates 211
    otd of 23430

is this ok number? how should i go about getting close to 3k below invoice? i think dealers are hesitant to lower price bc the stock is very limited on 2014s.

    thanks

Lets just assume the 2% hold back on the lx model is 500 dollars. There is another 500 dollar incentive money from the manufacturer... that's 1000 dollars.. Know add the dealers doc fee of $166. Right there is 1166 below dealers invoice price.

So the question is where is the other 1000 to 1800 dollars off this price that our forum members are getting.

1- dealers are getting more truck/ incentive money to push these vehicles off there lots that we don't know about. Thus helping dealers lowering pricing.

2- The real price of the vehicles are lower than we think.

Hi there! I'm in Utah and I just got this quote from a dealership for a 2014 CR-V EX-L AWD:

    Sell Price - $25,743.90
    Tax - $1,718.73
    Tire tax - $5.00
    Pop. tax - $150.00
    Title - $6.00
    Air tax - $3.00
    Corridor tax - $10.00
    Licence - $65.87
    Doc fee - $297.50

    Total OTD cost - $28,000.00

Destination IS included in the sell price. I think I can get a bit more shaved off that when I head into the dealership tomorrow but what do you think?

    karwool,

your deal is @2124 below dealers invoice price after taking dealers doc fee charge of 297 into consideration. Try to knock off a few more hundred if you can. maybe 3 or 4 free oil changes or a few added accessories like Mudguards, all season mats, cargo tray , pin stripping, etc.

    potchamon ,

I don't think you need to do that.

Tell all your targeted dealerships Knock 1400 of the sale price of this model and I will lease it. Check incentives to see if leasing still nets you 500 dollars. Check dealers lease numbers with the ones provided in the CRV leasing forum before closing deal.

Dealers cant remove the destination charge. All new car buyers have to pay this fee. Honda's hold-back is 2% of the base msrp . You could bring up with dealers when negotiating your deal.

Here is a good Formula figuring a target price on any vehicle if your not sure of a pricing.

Take models invoice price minus dealer-hold back . Then minus any rebates and incentives that apply to you. Then minus each dealers doc fee charge especially if your states doc fee's are not regulated. It changes your bottom line price.

As the months go on thru the year dealers will receive addition incentive money to sell vehicles. thus lowering deals further.

I always felt and learned with many years of car buying Letting dealers know you are a educated buyer with negotiating and know your vehicles pricing should not make any dealers salesman touchy.. If they get touchy........... To bad......................... Your looking out for your wallet not there's.

If you use the above Car pricing formula there is no need to bring up the hold-back. If salesman asks how you arrived at your price tell him.

I mentioned holdback a time or two tire-kicking earlier this year (at Toyota and Subaru iirc). By the time I brought it up though, it was pretty clear that we'd done our research and we could manage fine if we didn't wind up buying a car that day. Mostly the salespeople seemed to appreciate that we'd done our research and we weren't playing hide the ball on whether we were buying or leasing or financing or trading in a car.

    Happy New Year to all!

I wanted to provide an update for others' reference, if helpful, even though I ended up buying a new 2015 Accord instead because I couldn't get the price I wanted on CR-V.

I knew that one dealer sold its last 2014 CR-V LX FWD at $21,800 OTD (Houston, 6.25% tax, $150 doc fee). Dealer incentive from Honda for selling 2014 CR-V models is ~ $3,600. I shopped around. The closest that I could get was $22,400 OTD (incl. tinted windows & nitrogen) on the evening of 12/30 (I was there with the checkbook ready to buy but they wouldn't budge, so I walked). It's probably ~$20,800 purchase price (incl. destination).

Not sure if this thread is still active, but - if so - does anyone think this is good pricing and worth going back a year for a 2014? Have been bumping up against tight supply and pushback when grinding on pricing for the 2015s.

    This is for a 2014 2WD EX-L:
    - $23,682 (incl. dest, so $22,852 base)
    - $458 (wheel locks, trunk tray, splash guards)
    - $1,508.75 (tax @ 6.25%)
    - $301.77 (doc, title, lic. fee)
    - $25,950.52 out the door

May also include front tinting, need to confirm.

    Thanks for any insight/advice.

The invoice, including destination, is $27,044. Based on that, you are $3,362 under invoice, which looks very good from where I sit.

That $301 for doc, title, license probably includes about $150 for "doc fee", so back that out. And the $458 is mostly dealer profit also, so back out about $350 for that.

So that leaves us at $3,362 minus $150 minus $350, and you are now approximately $2,862 under invoice. Looks like a very nice deal to me.

As to whether to buy the 2015 or the 2014, that would depend on how much you like the CVT and the slightly increased torque in the 2015. Is it worth $2,000 to $2,500 more to you?

Overall, $25,950 OTD for a brand new EX-L is a hell of a good deal. If you want it, jump on it quick, the 2014s are going to be all gone very soon now.

Still some 2014's around eh? How's the color selection?

Your quote is well under TMV of $26,279. Sounds like a deal to me! And it's right in line with @mlk888's.
