    Hi Guys,

Would really appreciate some advice. In the market for a 2014 Accord Touring in the Bay Area. A dealer quoted me $28,988 + tax, doc, and license fees. Also includes destination charge. Is this a decent price? We are trying to buy a safe and reliable car for my sister. Thanks so much for any input

    Utesfan,

Is your offer from Gilman? They do a lot of business with Austin.  In the past, San Marcos had good pricing.  In San Antonio, check gunn - high volume, no haggle, and Fernandez - lower volume, no haggle, but they will match or beat competition and might have a few configs on lot.  Good luck

    Hi guys,

I'd like to get a 2014 Accord Sport CVT in the Phoenix Valley. There are 8 Honda dealers here. Among the first quote through emails, the lowest offer is $21,500 before tax, tittle, license, and doc fee, and $24,000 out of door price. Tax rate here is around 8%. I have another car and I can wait until the end of this month. Do you think that I can target the OTD price to be $22,000? Any advice would be really appreciated.

To be honest, we didn't really discuss rebates or incentives, just straight price. The only option I had at the end was to take $500 dealer cash or 1.9% financing (w/ a price of 20,900).

I have good credit, so I took the cash. Still ended up qualifying for 0.9% for 60 months financing, so it worked out great.

Basically, my strategy was based on what @brian125 and others mentioned. I calculated my goal from the invoice (23,225-2000-doc => 21,225-doc). When I went for a test drive a couple weeks ago, I got the dealer down to $21,200. Last week, I sent an email with that number around to the nearby dealers. They kept coming back with lower number, but then all stopped and hovered around $20,800.

I received a quote of $20,438 from Boch. I send an email out to the other dealers with that number and none responded. I made an appt and it was funny because when the salesman saw the number, he did a double take. At that point, they weren't gonna budge. They took the $38 off just to make it a nice round number.

    Hello.

I'm emailing back and forth multiple dealerships right now, and I have a quick question.

    There are
    1. 0.9% APR for 60months and
    2. $500 off Honda Graduate Program (I'm eligible)

Can I have this incentives at the same time?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Brian or anyone else with more brain!

I am planning to buy a Accord this month. I have some doubts with incentives. Currently i do not qualify for any existing incentives - Graduate / Military.

Do you think it will be worth waiting for a better incentive that might show up in October or Should i hunt for the best bargains end of this month? I own a honda civic and i have always thought.. what if there is customer loyalty bonus ends up showing in Oct.

Is there a way that we can find what the incentives are in October before end of September?

Or- Can i negotiate a good deal and confirm the payment and wait till 1st or 2nd to close the same by calling in Sick or make a payment by credit card and not complete the deal.
  • brian125brian125 Member Posts: 5,244
Incentives are posted by the 7th of the month . The longer you wait to buy a 2014 model will reduce your chances on model and color. If a dealer has limited models what they like to do is add alot of Accessories to the car which lines there pockets with more $$$. Now your spending more money than you intended trying to save another 500 dollars. which might not happen

Negotiate thru this month with trying to obtain a target price starting at 1500 below dealers invoice to as high as 2500 below.

    Good luck

I just bought a 2014 EX-L CVT no nav on Monday, and thought I would add a data point for those in the DFW area.

    $24,650 sale price + $1,596.17 tax +$127.50 license/title/registration/inspection + $125 doc fee = $26,498.67 OTD.

This included the following dealer adds: 3 year paint/fabric warranty, mud guards, wheel locks, trunk tray, pin stripe, window tint with lifetime warranty, and color matched door edge guards. I didn't much care for any of this (except maybe the tint), but all things considered, I'm okay with how I made out.

This was my first car purchase, and reading this forum was extremely helpful to me. So thanks everyone!

Thank you @brian125, and other people who gave tips, and advice.

Closed deal at OTD $19,830 on 2014 Accord LX.
Invoice: $21,620, so that makes 1790 below.

I guess it's not the best price, but I think it was fair.
    Thank you again.

    Hi Brian and others,

Thanks for responding to my queries. You are awesome and helped save me some money. I took Brian's suggestions, and bought my 2014 Honda Accord EX-L 4 cyl from Honda of Katy, Katy TX. I rented out one way car rental from Austin and drove to Katy (2hrs away) today. They had the color combination I wanted, Black exterior and tan interior.

In my research of comparing similar sedans, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, Nissan Altima, Kia Optima and Mazda 6, no one offers the same reliability/features/power/fuel efficiency per dollar as Honda.

FAHEEM is the man from Honda of Katy who so awesome. Anyone in the houston area/austin/areas looking for a good deal in Honda cars, head straight to him. But make sure you do your research before you get there.

Sales price was 24950 , with TTL the final OTD was 26750. The car came with tint, wheel locks, tray trunk, splash guards, nitrogen filled tires, free oil changes for life, data dots anti-theft, diamon fusion windshield. If you dont want any of the add ons, IMO you should be looking for OTD <= 26300. The invoice price of the car now is 25800.

Another tip for researchers : which car to choose 2014 or 2015. IMO, if you are going to own the car for more than 5-6 years then go for 2014. There is no change in the car and you could easily get 3-4K cheaper car. But hurry Honda has stopped production for 2014 and are shipping 2015's only.

Also, the best price I could get for the V6 EX-L OTD was 28500 from Autonation Honda Lewisville.

Happy hunting! Also if you guys get a poor interest rate from Honda, try PenFed or UFCU. You could easily refinance there.

    Cheers!

I know this is the 2014 Forum but have a quick question on the 2015 Accord. Have been reading that the Homelink system is now standard on all EX models and above however, all the pictures I have seen on Ebay Motors do not show it on any 4 cylinder EX or EX-L models. Is it available for upgrade and therefore not considered 'standard'? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Guys...wow....lot's of great information here but info overload.Have taken a lot of notes and copied some prices of what people bought for.

How do I get the dealer sale or invoice price? So I can negotiate $1500-2500 lower then that?

I am looking at 2014 Accord EX-L without Nav, Although am not in a rush could wait for a 2015 model, if need be.

I don't care where I have to travel I am in L.A. and tons of Honda dealerships and will use Brian's tactic to get the best deal. Although the dealership across the street from me would make it super easy.....ha,ha

Is avoiding their financing a huge thing? I can demand a certain interest rate or walk right? I could pay cash if need be also but rather keep that cash free.

Any and all advice will be appreciated.

Pricing can be found @Nada , @KBB.com and on Edmunds new car home page.

    The EXL model Invoice = 25,860 plus destination = 790 totaling......26,650

As far as financing thru dealerships . Getting a lower sale price or a cash incentive to finance vehicle thru Honda would be the goal. . If there is no incentive to finance thru dealers and you have a better rate go with better rate / make dealer beat it . Otherwise pay cash .

In your area there are a lot of dealerships. Making a target price of 2k below dealers invoice or more obtainable.

Extend your dealership search as far as your willing to travel. Once you feel you have a good target price ask your closest dealer to match or beat that number for the sale that day.

    Hey Brian,

Check on truecar, the invoice price is now 25.8K (including dest), i saw it come down from 26650 recently. But the other websites still maintain the 26650 as you say.

The 25,860 is the invoice price for the EXL model But vehicle w/ destination included of 790 = 26,650

Use @Nada, @Kbb, @Edmunds, or CR reports all are reliable and accurate.

    $80 - dealer doc fees
    $1566 - state/local taxes
    $265 - license fees
    ------------------------------------
$21,406 - total out the door

Is this a good deal or should I try to negotiate lower?

    Hi Brian and Everyone,
I'm starting this process of researching to buy a 2014 Honda Accord EX -L and have been reading the post but do have a question. When you say the first step is to do your homework - I assume e-mailing and requesting the OTD from several dealership. When does one test drive the vehicle - is it before requesting the OTD or after receiving several OTD? And to negotiate below the dealer invoice ($1500 - $2000) does it comes after receiving several OTD or is it mentioned when requesting the OTD.

    The lx model, w/ dest/ charge included = 21,619

puts you at 2124 below invoice minus dealers 80 doc fee. A good deal in CA

    @PJW400

In your emails, and calls to all your targeted dealerships your looking for the lowest selling price. You need to separate OTD pricing from selling price. OTD pricing is tags, taxes, and doc fee/ admin charge. Some dealers tack on a tire disposal fee of 8, or 10 dollars , or internet fee. Pre homework includes knowing each dealers doc fee charge. This helps you decide on a good target price offer.

Once you receive your lowest offers on your vehicles selling price call back those dealerships and go over final numbers. This is how you break down your deal.

Test drives are done before you make your emails and calls to dealers to buy vehicle... Tell dealers/ Salesman you are deciding between a few car brands and have not made your mind up.. That keeps them from hounding you about pricing in the dealerships.

Bank/ credit union loan pre approval and contacting your Ins. company is also part of pre homework.

When negotiating near the end should you focus on the OTD or Invoice price?

In my initial first round of emails so far I have gotten $24408 invoice price for 2014 accord sedan EX-L, no extra option stuff. In southern California. How much more do think I can squeeze out of them?

I also have 2008 Nissan Versa S Hatchback 87,000 miles auto,pw,pl,ac,cruise, white I want to trade-in, I guess I should wait till I have done my 3rd round of emails before I throw this at them?

your numbers put you at 2242 below invoice if the 790 destination charge was included in that price. a buy / trade is hard with most buyers losing money on there trade.

I would not mention a trade until you have 3 or 4 dealers giving you there final take it or leave it offer. You will have to go down to the dealerships anyway to show them your vehicle so work your lowest deals before going down.

Tell dealers I decided to trade in my vehicle. Depending on dealers stock and there sales incentive for the month will dictate if you can receive a lower deal than you have right now.

Do you think I could email them after the best and final to see what they would give me on trade or probably need to take the car down their before they make a offer? I just want to take the power away from them lowballing me on my trade to make up for good price I get out of them.

In my quotes I did not mention that I wanted tinted-windows or tell them at the 3 round of final offers? or save that as negotiating tactic with the trade?

    Thanks for help!

Dealer can't commit on a price for your trade in on the phone . They Need to see and inspect vehicle. Work on getting the lowest offers 1st.

Dealerships that use Galves pricing and many do....... pricing for your trade will be alot lower priced than a Kbb, Nada, or Edmunds trade in price. Ask dealerships what book they use on the trade in. Getting a Kelley's blue book trade price is higher...... most dealers wont go near that price.

If the Honda vehicles don't have tinted windows on them already don't complicate your deal trying to get one. . Get windows tinted at a reputable tint store. It will also save you $$$$$.

Get your lowest possible prices on new vehicle then see out of the lowest targeted dealers who will give you a fair trade in price.

Expect to take a loss. Otherwise sell it private.

I wanted to post what i found !

I did a quick quote for Accord LX 2014 in Chicago, IL area and found that the quote was 18600$ yesterday.

I did a quote on my next door dealer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was offered 19600$.

The above quotes include destination and does not include taxes and dealer fees.

Does the prices keep dipping till the end of the month? I have no reason to buy one immediately and can wait till end of the month.

What are your thoughts.. I would like to buy it as lower but i like the current prices.

my target of 23,800 for an EXL accord sedan 4cyl without nav includes destination (790) and doc fee (399)
we would need to add MA .0625 tax (1487.50) and rmv fee (135).
total out the door for this scenario is 25,422.50.
    think it will work?
  • carbuyer435carbuyer435 Member Posts: 11
wait... after including the 399 doc fee in my target price $23,800 i would then need to pay out the doc fee at closing, making it a wash with an OTD of 25,821.50. i'm still new at this.

Play out the month with pricing. The more dealerships you get involved the better you will do in the price wars. Most dealers are in no rush to give you there lowest price yet.

your quote of 18,600 on the lx model would be a 3k below invoice price . I'm assuming the dealer did not add the destination fee on that price. If dealer did................. buy vehicle asap..

The dealer has added destination fees and i have verified that as its a email quote. Do you know if the prices would go further down and is that worth waiting for.

I got accord lx for 18600 and CRV- LX 2014 2WD for 19600 and AWD for 20700 as a quote without any negotiation and it's online quote.

My friend is also interested in buying a CRV/ Accord. It is likely that we will buy the same vehicle and we can wait till end of the month.

If we team up and buy 2 from same store how far down can we negotiate? Do we have room for 500$+ savings per car if we negotiated ? Also.. My costco recommended dealership said that they would do 110% of difference if we showed them there is a better price.

I have never bought a new car and i am not sure if the prices keep dropping till end of the year!

    Any help appreciated!

Its all depends on dealer stock and there sales incentives for the month. Find dealerships with 10 or 15 of the same model you want and it may be possible. Otherwise dealer knows they could get there price from another buyer.

update: i have a dealership willing to meet my target of 23,800 on a 2014 accord EXL cvt, no nav. sedan. with $429 doc fee. = 24,299 or 2,421 below invoice.

they are out of state so i would pay my own RMV fees and sales tax to the registry in my state. i have 7 days after transferring of plates.

question: the last one they have in stock is not my color. they have located my color (same target price) but would like a deposit before trading another dealership to bring it in.

i read that i need a bill of sale signed and faxed to me first detailing the car vin, model, price, etc first, before giving a credit card deposit. correct?

what should i ask them to provide me with if they do not have the car yet and are asking for a deposit to bring my color in.

    thanks,

Get this deal in writting with ................Vehicle, Vin number, model, color, etc. Refundable deposit if dealership can't deliver

I seen and heard of so many people getting burned. You want a faxed bill of sale/ buyers order to confirm purchase. Then leave a credit card deposit. If any dealer wont do this walk away.

    Hey guys,

I like this so much I will post in here for accord buyers. @stever has posted a link in the CRV forum that I will try to post in here so you could read it.

    @stever

This article states good buying info... but they forgot to add on one very important negotiating Number which is high in a lot of states.. You always need to compensate dealers high doc fee charges. You should know every dealers doc fee charge prior to making each dealership a offer to buy.

FIGURING WHAT DEALERS REALLY PAY FOR A CAR:
The dealer's actual cost for a car -- which will determine a price you can negotiate -- may be much lower than the so-called invoice price because of undisclosed rebates from the maker. This example uses actual sticker, invoice and holdback amounts, but then subtracts hypothetical rebates of the sort often given to dealers, showing how the true cost to dealers might be much less than the invoice price that's the popular benchmark for car shoppers.

    Sticker price — $19,655
    Invoice price — $18,869
    3% holdback — $590
Bonus for meeting sales goal — $200
Good customer feedback bonus — $300
Bonus for selling this model — $100

    Dealer cost — $17,679

If your fortunate enough to get to the 17,679. So now if you pay a dealers $ 699 doc fee charge and have not compensated this charge in your asking/ target price dealer has recouped some of there money back. Just a heads up for the new car, 1st time buyers reading this.

So on above scenario if you buy this vehicle at Invoice price and pay a dealers $399 doc fee charge dealer has made 1589 dollars on the sale of this vehicle. That of course is if that invoice price is actually the true price. And not knowing what other incentives dealer has going on from the manufacturer this number could be higher. A lot of times near middle to end of the year is when dealers get more incentive money from there companies.

The hold back on Honda vehicles is 2% of MSRP

@jumop, no one really knows the dealer cost of a car. The dealer won't even know until the books are run and the bonuses plugged in. So for us consumers, going by invoice is about the best we can do. (Holdback can be handy to know, but some dealers are so "rich" they don't finance or floorplan their inventory, so that's not an ironclad number).

    iecavi ,

your model sports Invoice price with destination charge of 790 = 23,225

Your target price should be in the range of 1500 to 2300 below dealers invoice price after taking all dealerships doc fee charges into consideration.

If a dealers doc fee is $399 and your target price is 2k below then your telling dealers you will buy today for 2399 below dealer invoice. That's how you compensate and make this fee a wash on the bill of sale.

Tell both those dealers you are not ready to buy yet. Plain and simple. until you know what a good from a bad price is.

Click on my user name brian125, then on my page click on my comments 2752 and read thru as many of my comments and take notes on what I post in these forums, on how and when to buy. Buying advice and tips. Then you will have a better understanding on buying a new vehicle with confidence and the knowledge of pricing.

Emailing 10 to 20 dealerships internet manger or there dept with your target price to buy that day is the way to go. Read my prior posts and I guarantee you will make the best possible deal you could this month.

Hi Brian and all - thanks for the great thoughts in this forum.

After some emailing around to local dealers in the SF bay area, I got a quote for $19,165 + $80 doc fee for a 2014 Accord LX CVT + $1,200 for Katzkin leather add-on.

Good quote? Should I try to do better?

You have a very good deal in the works if the 790 destination fee of 790 is included in this price? The standard Katzian leather seats are close to 800 dollars from a authorized dealer. Your car deal is 2454 below invoice price minus doc fee's.

SF has good pricing like in MD and VA on Accord models.

    Good luck
