How do you go about buying a Sequoia in Canada? It seems as if the prices are better. Can you apply for credit there or do you go up there with your financing prearranged? Thanks for the help!
  • tsw019tsw019 Member Posts: 13
I'm stepping down a notch or two from you guys...going after SR5 with AH,CQ,AC plus several other smaller opts putting me in $37K-$38K MSRP range.(Just too old for sun roofs and DVD's I guess)
However, need your input on 2 things:
Whats big advantage of 17" over 16" wheels(ride, stability)?
Anyone check on aftermarket leather? (costs 1200-1400 thru dealer and they gave references on customers who swear it is as good or better than factory)
I guess all of you noticed Toy website changed option pkgs on SR5 "AGAIN" today.

Looking at sk123 & mentor34 orders, sounds like they got to pick and choose. All I get when visiting is "lets see whats on the locator", even when I tell them I can wait 30-60 days. Have you had similar experiences or is it just me?
  • shek3shek3 Member Posts: 72
I have heard similar thing to you........lets see what comes in, I have also heard "I think we can get you exactly what you want, but you will have to wait." I am really getting frustrated and dont really have much confidence in any of the dealers I have spoken to. When it is time for me to buy I will be armed with all my info, option codes and any pricing I can find. I expected better from Toyota....I didnt have this much trouble with Nissan and Infiniti! Mike

I cancelled my order and got my deposit back
Any body knows about ad charge. One dealer says
there is an ad charge of 760 for SR5 which is part of invoice price
He gave me an offer of 39200 final price plus freight charge + 249 proceesing fee + tag +title+tax
    This is not custom order
The configuration is same as in my previous post
16" wheels, disc changer, pm ....

No dvd or 17" wheels or rload levelling suspension
This quote is less than 1250 from my previous order
    Any comments
  • tsw019tsw019 Member Posts: 13
Since this 03 pricing, I couldn't even guess what config. is or is not available in your region... also edmunds, kbb, nor anyone else has invoice...yet. I know you hated to cancel and sure you are as frustrated as the rest of us.I am so *#$&@# #*#, this morning test drove an Acura MDX(which no dealer discounts below MSRP)(also Consumer Reports will have next month as their top rated large SUV).For a so called "luxury SUV" the MDX is not even in the same league with Sequoia(ride, handling,or power)So......I'm back on board with you guys.
Suggest use Toyota website to find your pkg.(MSRP),then use old kbb or edmunds to estimate invoice.think all posters above are looking at 4X4, so my 4X2 est.wouldn't fit anyway. Good luck.

The only advantage and American would have if they were buying in Canada would be a favourable exchange
rate. Most of the Toyota Dealers in Canada have adopted a nice little price fixing scheme called "Access Toyota".
Now when you go to buy a Toyota vehicle in most dealerships in Canada every pays the same price. In most cases
this is very close to the MSRP. In the case of a 2003 Toyota Sequoia Ltd, MSRP is $62,155 CDN and the discounted
"Access Toyota" price is $61,969 CDN. Talk about a bargain!!!! Add in your freight and PDI of $1260 and another
$20 in environmental levies you have a final "discounted" price of $63,249 CDN. This is before you pay another
$10,750 in federal and BC provincial sales taxes. Final price to drive your new 2003 Toyota Sequoia off of the lot
here in Beautiful British Columbia, Canada is a paltry $73,999. When I decide to part with my 2002 Sequoia (that I
didn't pay anywhere near the MSRP for, I will again try to shop around to see if there are any Toyota Dealers left in
this fair land that are willing to deal. If not, I will be forced to buy something domestic; which would be a darn shame
since I have purchased nothing but Toyota vehicle in my adult life. This is my seventh and very possible my last one!
  • trdsctwotrdsctwo Member Posts: 67
Even after my mini tirade about "Access Toyota", the fact of the matter is that even including
all of the taxes and fees, a new 2003 Sequoia Ltd is still lower than the MSRP in the US.
A similarly equipped model has an MSRP of $48,300 US and $74,000 CDN translates into
$46,600 US at a $0.63 exchange rate. I do not believe however, that US residents can import
new vehicles from Canada without duty, if at all. I think that it violates the "Auto pact".
So much for my 2 cents worth!

I just sold my car and I am driving my husbands since he has a company car. I have been test driving for a few months and have narrowed my decision down to the Toyota Sequoia or the Acura MDX. Where I live there are a few 02 SR5's left and I think I can get them at invoice, whereas the MDX, I believe is still going at MSRP here. Does anyone have any helpful tidbits in helping me make this decision? I have never bought a new car before, we normally buy used, however with both being only out since 01 and they want $34K+ for one that has at least 20K miles on it, it is better to buy new.....
  • charlieliucharlieliu Member Posts: 80
We bought our SEQ SR5 4x4 last December. We considered MDX and went one Acura dealer. Ther jerk SP said(and I quote): "I don't want to waste my time and my manager's time to negotiate. We sell the car for $2000 over MSRP". I left and went to a TOYOTA dealer. We got the truck for $800 over invoice. Comparing the two, SEQ is bigger, more powerful and has more options for the money. Now, every time we saw a MDX, my wife and I are saying that we made a right decision. Otherwise, we would regret for as long as I own a MDX had we bought one.
  • tsw019tsw019 Member Posts: 13
Ref post#159......and disregard most of our bitching about Toyota (Corp.) and their attitude.
Quality, ride, comfort, etc. is your concern in comparing the MDX vs. Sequoia......Test drive(interstate and 2-lane) the Acura first then go to Toyota dlr soon after(same day)and drive the Seq. You will answer your own question!!
    Good luck.

when i bought my 02 sequoia at a year ago, i was also considered between these two, mainly for the price, look and third row seat. to be fair, when i test drove the MDX, i was impressed by how tight it cornered when i was doing a aggressive turn, but i was also turn off my the attitude of those greedy salesman. so i eventually went with the sequoia as you know. after a year, i was so thankful for those acura salesman that forced me to make the right choice. being a layman who has never driven a SUV, sequoia's size does turn a lot of people away, but once you get used to the size, you found that you are in heaven.

i still think sequoia doesn't turn as good as an MDX, but so as to all other sedans, MDX just isn't an alternative of a minivan or 7 passager SUV, the 2nd row seat is even smaller than a highlander, and the third row space is a joke, don't say it's for children, cos they are so closed to the back window and i feel it's dangerous for people who sits there. that alone has already brought MDX back to the class of all 5 passage SUV segment. the space of the sequoia is real great.

for interior, i feel they are almost the same, MDX isn't up to luxury section at all, but so as sequoia. but the smoother ride and the quietness of sequoia won MDX big time.

looks are very subjective, but i do find MDX's front is too flat. but i know a lot of people think MDX looks more sporty.

i don't think people agreed, but when you compare a honda to a toyota, (or even acura to toyota) the only thing that honda/acura can win over toyota is they are more sporty. but the refinement/attentions of detail are simply not there.

    MSRP was $41,206
Package goes like this. I added a few things on too.

    Roof Rack
Driver/Passenger Curtain & Side Air Bags
    Daytime Running Lights
    Leather Interior
    Moonroof with tilt and slide
    Power driver and Pass Seats
Alloy Wheel Package with Tow hitch, Running boards,RR Privacy Glass
    Power heated outside mirrors
Accessory meter (compass O/S Temp Gauge, homelink and trip computer
Dual Air conditioning (front and rear controls)
    Keyless entry
Front fog and driving lamp lights
    cargo tote
carpet floor mats with door sill protector
    cargo net
    glass breakage sensor
Alloy wheel locks, molded dash applique
    backup sensor
    bug deflector
    window rain guards

My trade in was $11,850 for a 99 Chrysler LHS with 50,000 K

When all is said and done, after all the taxes, finance charges, 7 year 75,000 mi platinum warranty, 5 year car care agreement, some stupid 5,000 cash back if the car gets stolen agreement that I needed to buy in order to bring my percentage for financing down to a decent amount, the car cost us, not excluding the trade in.

$50,000.00 and that is final cost after EVERYTHING.

I did manage to squabble for another $1,000 off and they are mailing me a check.

I switched from the MDX to the Ody. The deal that I have on the 2003 EXL Ody is MSRP (they are throwing in some DIO for nothing) + $865 for the 7yr/100K $0 deductible warranty. On the Sequoia it's a 2002 SR5 4x4 (I can't remember all of the options however the MSRP is $40,7XX and I can get it for $36,5K and $1,100 for the 7yr/100k $0 deductible warranty. My husband, father-in-law and children want me to get the Sequoia, however my mother-in-law and myself are leaning toward the ody because of price. I have to make the decision today.
  • doudoudiddoudoudid Member Posts: 76
why would you switch from MDX to Ody, is it the space issue?

my brother has the Ody, while we have our sequoia, for Ody, you really have all the conveniences of an mini van, for sequoia, it's a tall vehicle that sometime you find it is hard to climb in and out, unload baby... but it definitely has it looks, and do you need the 4wd? i bet if you are switching from MDX to Oddy, you probably don't need that, am i right?

so if you are looking for a cooler mini van, you can get a 2wd sequoia to save even more bucks. although i said Oddy is more practical, i still like my sequoia over Oddy, cos it has 3 seats in the 2row, while Ody has only had two, it forces you to use the third row all the time. and mini van has too much rattles, it looks like a few chairs seating in the center of a big box. and i do like the toyota qualities over honda, the steering wheel is much better in the sequoia as well, for me, despite the gear stick is suck at sequoia comparing to Oddy's.

by the way, you may get more feed back if you post you mail in the sequoia forum (instead of what did you pay) or the mini van vs SUV

If you think about the price, why not to take a look on Pilot? As I understand, it's simliar to MDX only w/ different brand name. I test-drove pilot, oddy, and sequoia, sianna. For the handling, ride quality.., SUV is much better. The advantage of van is the price and for little kids or senior person. oddy is the most noise one in all and I don't like its 3rd row which cannot split fold. If you have 5-6 people in your family, you only have limit luggage space. Also, I don't like the price of Honda. It always sells the vehicle at MSRP or higher. The best quote I got for pilot was $1500 below MSRP by dealer's mis-calculator (what he said). I could get the truck at $1000 below MSRP as it's his mistake but he couldn't sell the truck at the quote price. It's still >$2000 over invoice. At all, I like sequioa the most. The main shortcomes of sequioa for me are costs of vehicle and the low gas milage. So, after comparing everything, I ordered a 03 sequioa this week and expect to get it in two weeks.

I couldn't sleep knowing I had been taken at this dealership and it's been a hassle for a week now..back and forth..they are such schemers these dealers..Don't you know when I went back to get itemization of the bill they added on 2 things I never ordered or knew about...I also found out I got rooked on the Platinum Warranty ($1,795). I had them take all that off the bill and now my bill is $5,000 less. Imagine that..Then they tell me they can't change the paperwork because it was already processed. Bull*&(*!!!!

I needled and needled them until they said to come in and they will redo the whole order less all the extra junk. By the way, you can get the same Platinum warranty for 1/2 the price on the net. Go to Iowa Toyota or Warranty by net..Much cheaper..Now with tax and my added back up sensor and bug deflector, my total price is $42,166.00.

Now I am in the midst of shopping around for refinance rates if anyone knows of a good web site..The darn finance officer said My rate will go up considerably because I'm taking off all those unwanted items..

Sorry for the ramble, I'm just mad...

    But, who knew??????
  • cindilcindil Member Posts: 18
Well, I decided on the Sequoia. The reason why I was looking at the Ody is because I have never spent that much on a vehicle and I was having buyers remorse before buying. Actually I have had the Sequoia for a few days and I love it and I wonder why I even second guessed myself. I bought a 2002 Silver Sky Met SR5, 4x4, MSRP $40,705. I got it for $36.5 and I bought the Toyota Platnum 7 yr 100k $0 deductible warranty for $1,100. I hope that is a good price because I didn't do my homework on the warranty.

Good job. You got quite good deal. Where do you get your finance from the dealership or eLoan or bank? My Credit Union even cannot beat this rate.

After exhaustive research and negotiating I finally threw in the towel last weekend. Purchased an '02 Limited with all options (FE,EJ,GY,RF,RL,SR,CF) for $42,200. This is not the great invoice or $1000 above invoice price I wanted, and many of you have achieved, however, that is total cost (plus $90 license fee), no other fee's or costs. With the 03's being out I thought that would drive down the price of an '02 but there are so few 02's out there, their price is staying high too, if you can find one. Also found that the 03's have about $800 more sticker price and dealers are even less willing to deal on these. I guess Toyota is not feeling enough pressure from GM/Ford 0% yet (or I'm getting soft in my negotiating skills).
Really like the SUV but don't feel like I got the best deal that I could have. 03 Eddie Bauer Expedition was a close second in my book, and could have gotten a much better deal on this vehicle, but wife wanted Sequoia. I like Toyota's and the Sequoia is very nice vehicle, paying too much takes away from the excitement though.

I have a 2001 landcruiser and researched the extended warranties recently. I bought mine thru a dealership in Dallas area. You need to be careful when buying non-Toyota extended warranties. Their coverage is most likely not the same as Toyota Platinum and I bet their claim process is not as easy. It needs to say Toyota Platinum (or in the Gulf states "Toyota Extra Care") to be a genuine Toyota backed warranty.

You bought a great vehicle at a great value to you. 5 years from now it really will not matter if you could have saved another dollar or two. I hope it provides you many miles of service.

Are we ever going to get '03 invoice pricing on Sequoia??
  • bmolloybmolloy Member Posts: 23
I am in Los Angeles and am looking to buy a Sequoia. As it will be used primarily for my construction work, all I need is a standard 2wd model and probably not all the optional extras. Should I just look around the local Toyota dealers or are there any Internet based dealers that I can get a better deal from. I dont have a trade-in and I am happy to buy on-line/telephone.
    Any suggestions please ?
    thanks

Does anyone have the REAL dealer cost for a 4x4 SR5??? I was told the kbb prices are off by $1000...mike
  • 02sequoia02sequoia Member Posts: 7
Based on my experience...it will be very hard or nearly impossible to get the "Real" dealer cost on any vehicle. There are so many factors that effect the the "Real" dealer cost that the public will never know. However, there are certain dealer cost information that are available publicly. For example....Toyota has a 2% holdback of MSRP or Dealer Invoice (it depends which part of the country the dealership is located). Also, a 1% Wholesale Financial Reserve/Floorplan Fee of MSRP or Dealer Invoice (depends on location of dealership). If you live in the Gulf states area...there is another 1.5% Holdback of the Base Price. So again it can really get complicated to get the "Real" dealer cost of the vehicle.

I suggest that you gather as much information as you can and negotiate a price you think is fair. Talk to the fleet or sales manager and ask if they are willing to do a house sale on the vehicle you are interested in. Also, keep in mind that the vehicle market is driven by supply and demand....if the vehicle is very popular....you will end up paying for the asking price.

    Good Luck!

I had good luck with my recent Sequoia purchase at Buena Park Toyota (5 fwy & Beach) I dealt with their internet sales mgr., Raj Shah. Very nice guy, absolutely no B.S. or dealer installed "gravy" items. His invoice matched the Edmunds Numbers. His price on all Sequoias was invoice + $625. Here's his e-mail: ShahR@autonation.com

    Shek3,
KBB seems to have invoice pricing that matches up pretty well with what my dealer is putting out. If Edmunds doesn't have the pricing that the dealers probably have had for a month, so be it, lots of other places to get it. Lots of Toyota ads run on Edmunds, for whatever that is worth in determing a cause.

tsw019, toyofannew, emsome, the toyota dealership that I bought from is in St. Louis, MO. Appartently our market has a high advertising fee (I've seen other compaints about it). I had never bought from this dealership before, actually I currently own my 7th Nissan before this purchase but the toyota dealership is owned by the same "family" as one of the nissan dealers that I have bought from in the past. Also, I went in that night, they knew that I was going to purchase (I had already sold my minivan) either the Sequoia or the Honda Ody. I told them that I could get the Honda 7 yr/100K $0 deductible warranty for $850. That's when they came back with the Toyota Plantinum 7 yr/100k $0 deductible warranty for $1,100. Tell them you saw someone got it for this amount. That's what I did about the Honda Ody. one and the Honda dealers in St. Louis matched it and Toyota jumped on it for $1,100 (it's more than the Honda because the vehicle is more expensive). When it came to financing eloan.com was offering 4.75% for 3 years or 5.24% for up to 5. My credit union matched the 5.24% for 5 years, however the dealership was able to find a bank (Chase) that was offering 5% for 5 years. I told my credit union, however they didn't try to match the 5%, so I went with Chase. I hope this helps.

Did you buy the extended warranty? What quote did you get on the web for the Toyota Platinum?
  • toyofannewtoyofannew Member Posts: 24
I ordered a 03 2WD SR5 sequoia w/ the options I want (LA, AH, SR,...) at $800 over invoice ($35614) two weeks ago, and I got it here tonight. The invoice is qiute close to those at kbb if plus the $565 adiministration fee for southern region. For safety, I checked three dealerships and I got the same invoice. I really recommand my dealer, Ress Cox, at Sandy Springs. Also, I got 4.95% finance from the dealership (3 - 5 yrs). I didn't get the extend warranty ($850) as I trust the quality of Toyota.

    Doc.Fee $ 51.44
    Tax.7% $ 2,920.92
    State Sale Tax$ 15.00

Mike, where did you order it from. Looks like you got a good deal if you look at kbb.com. Can you post contact details here of the dealer. Did you consider any extended warranties .. if so .. how much were they ?

Has anyone compared 3rd party warranties, are they comparable to Toyota's and should they be considered ? If you have, can you please post contact details here too.

I got my truck from Continental Toyota in Lagrange IL. Actually I went to another Toyota dealer in IL. for a quotation and asked
for an complete sales print out which was $45,600.00 out the door to give to my Credit Union. On my way home I stopped by Continental Toyota and talked to the sales manager if they can give me a better deal than this. It was around
8P.M. and it seems like they were slow. He gave me a price of $44,806.36 out the door but have to wait for 2-3 weeks. I need to inquire about the extended warranty when the truck comes in and will post it if I get a good price.
  • emsoneemsone Member Posts: 9
I just, well on 30 Aug, took delivery of a SR5 also from Continental Toyota of La Grange. It was in stock, for $700 over invoice. By all accounts I got as good a deal as I could expect, since Sequioa's are in such short supply. I was just in on Saturday for a oil change at 1700 miles, as we are driving it to Florida this week. I stopped by the finance guy, as they had offered me a September special on the warranty of $1450. I mentioned to him how cindil and toyotaguys.com had significantly lower prices. Not as low as $850 as I just saw above, but $1100 to $1230. He agreed to sell me the 7year Platinum 0 Deduct for $1,180.00. My wife has been bugging me, and she approved the buy for a peace of mind....hers ofcourse!!! This is her car/truck and she loves it. Hope you have as good experience at Continental as we have....Later

Just curious did you also pay a documentation fee. It seems that the Southern Region Administration Fee is not being charge on a consistent basis by the dealerships in the Atlanta area. For example my purchase of a 2002 Limited 2WD (CF,RL,EJ,SR,RF,GY) back in August did not include a Southern Region Administration fee (unless of course it was part of my negotiated price). However, I did have to pay a $250.00 documentation fee.

During my search...I did talk to Sandy Springs Toyota but in the end went with Legacy Toyota (Chris Hobbs/Internet Sales) because the price was much better and they included for free "Tires for Life" and 1 Year Oil Change with my purchase.
  • sbell4sbell4 Member Posts: 446
....you paid the admin fee. It is included in the invoice so "X" dollars over or under invoice always includes holdback, finance reserve and admin in the souheast.
  • toyofannewtoyofannew Member Posts: 24
I believe the questions were for me not Mike2191. I did check w/ Legacy as I mentioned one of three dealerships. Chris gave me the same invoice price but charged $1250 over invoice for 03 model. Yes, Legacy has lower DOC fee ($289 not $250) while Sandy Springs is $389.50. I visited Legacy twice: 1st time, I saw Chris. But, he said he was quite busy (please note I had the appointment w/ him) and he assigned me to another salesman. It looked like I had to deal w/ the price from the beginnings as this guy told me the quoted SUV didn't exist. I left w/o any deal after ~45 minutes. 2nd time, I got the call from the salesman and I was told they could order one for me at the quoted price. I called Chris back to confirm this. Then, I made another appointment to see him. This time, I only saw the salesman and was told the price would be $400 more. I waited for 20 minutes and paged Chris several times, but, he didn't show off. Then, I gave up. So, you might be a lucky one - they had the exact truck you wanted. By the way, the ToyoGuard plus is $227 (invoice). Both of us only save ~$200 not $600.
Ross Cox at Sandy Springs, in the other hand, did kept his words: $800 over the invoice what I see. He told me the invoice price he got was not accurate as the final price for 03 didn't come out at that time (middle of Sept.). So, I got the truck ~$200 lower than the price he quoted (the price I aggreed to order).
Well, I was told "Tire for life" means nothing. You have to do paid tire-rotation at Legacy for every 5K miles. Then, they give you new tires ONLY when ALL 4 tires are at the SAME conditions. I believe it's almost impossible at the earth. So, it looks like you pay (rotation) for nothing. "Free oil change" is good. I got one from Legacy for my Camry. But, please keep in mind, your waiting time normally is longer as it's free. Maybe, you will be lucky again.
If you check kbb.com for 02 model, you will see the adiministration fee there. For 03 model, it shows N/A not 0 or INCL. As the whole process keeps no change and I assume this fee keep no change too. If you check World Toyota web site, you can confirm this.
By the way, how many speakers did you get w/ EJ? I only saw 6-speakers on my truck. As I know, it should be more (8 or 10). Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

Maybe I have been lucky during my dealing with Chris. I basically communicated with him via e mail and a couple of phone conversation. His first pricing was way above everyone else. However, once I informed him that I was talking to 4 other dealerships and that his price was way higher than the rest...he gave me a better bid which was lower than everyone else. He also offered me the Tires for Life as well as the 1 year oil change for free.

Also, he gave me the choice of waiting (2 weeks) for the vehicle that I want or he can find me one through the dealership exchange program. I opted for the latter and he was able to locate one for me within 4 hours. He had another sales person contact me for the deposit and completion of the buyers order form. I completed the form and faxed it back to them along with the deposit (credit card). I then scheduled a pick up date and time.

Showed up at the dealership a couple of days later as scheduled and was taken care of immediately by my contact person. Had all the option explained and took the vehicle for a test drive. Finally met Chris for the signing of the documents. He offered a lower rate financing but I declined since I had a check from my bank already. Total time in the dealership...about an hour and 15 minutes.

Based on the information provide for the "Tires for Life"...
-Valid for original owner of vehicle.
-Rotate and Balance tire every 5K miles
-Alignment Inspection every 12 months or 15k miles
-Tires will be replaced with like type tires when tire depth reaches 2/32" as per state safety standard.

Basically you are required to perform regular tire maintenance as you would even without the Tires for Life.

He actually tried to change the doc fees to their regular price but I reminded him that the doc fees he listed on his quote to me was $250.00...so he honored it.

I specifically told Chris....I will not pay for a ToyoGuard....and he did not charge me for it. In the end....I basically saved about $4,200 off of the MSRP.

As for the speakers....there are 10.
3 in each front door and 2 on each rear door. Kinda of deceiving....but that is how Toyota counted the speakers.

I have to give credit to "Fighting Chance", KBB and of course Edmunds for all the great information they have provided.
